Rising rent prices (alongside gas and food) have a lot of people worried. So it comes as no surprise that some folks want to mitigate the extra expenses. While some opt for cutting back on what they spend elsewhere or look for better housing deals elsewhere, others take a slightly… greedier approach. Have you ever heard of someone asking a family member to pay in order to housesit for them? No? Well, buckle in, Pandas—you’re about to.
A redditor turned to the AITA subreddit for their verdict on whether or not they were right or wrong to refuse to housesit for their sister. Housesitting usually entails taking care of the home and making sure nobody breaks in and watering the plants (who may or may not get their first taste of water that year). What housesitting certainly is not is having to pay the owner rent for the privilege of doing them a favor.
However, that’s exactly what the redditor’s sister demanded of them. She was even willing to slash the market rent price a bit for the sake of family. Ridiculous? Market-savvy? Read on for the full story and tell us what you think in the comments, dear Pandas.
When a relative asks you for a favor, the last thing you’d expect is that they want to charge you for your altruism

A redditor shared with the AITA subreddit how their sister tried to charge them rent in order to housesit for her. Here’s the story, in full

The vast majority of internet users are (obviously) siding with the redditor. However, the scary thing is that there are quite a few landlords over on Facebook who support the sister’s perspective that there’s no such thing as living for free. They actually called the redditor a ‘leech’ for refusing to pay to housesit.
We’re not entirely sure if the morals of society and common sense suddenly changed or if some social media groups just live in tiny echo chambers. It’s probably the latter, right? Look, it’s totally fine to be rational, financially literate, and economic in how you live life. Heck, these are all great qualities to have. But when you start breaking apart familial bonds for the sake of a small pile of cash, things start to look like we really are living in a Clown World.
However, it’s understandable that some people might be in full panic mode because of what’s happening to the economy. Rent prices are through the roof. CNN Business reports that rents in Manhattan hit a record high in May “for the fourth consecutive month.”
“Median rent for an apartment in Manhattan climbed to $4,000 a month in May, surging 25% from a year ago,” CNN reported the findings from the brokerage firm Douglas Elliman and Miller Samuel Real Estate Appraisers and Consultants. The situation will likely get even worse, as summer gets underway.
“This is a market that has been pressed to the ceiling. On top of that, the expectation is that new leasing will peak in August, which is expected to keep upper pressure on prices in the near term. I’m not sure how long this lasts after that, because at some point, for affordability, the math just doesn’t work,” Jonathan Miller, president and CEO of Miller Samuel, told CNN.
In Manhattan, in May, median rent prices for studio and one-bedroom apartments stood at $2,975 and $3,999 respectively. Meanwhile, the median rent for a two-bedroom apartment is just slightly less than $5,000. Median three-bedroom apartment prices reached $6,498.
Things aren’t all that better across the pond, in the United Kingdom. One renter, mother of one, Amy Jones, told the BBC that she’d asked her landlord to evict them so they could be considered for social housing.
The desperation is real. Some Brits are paying dozens of months of rent in advance and offering to pay more cash each month just to secure accommodation.
Quite a few people were shocked by what happened. Here’s what they said about the sister’s point of view
Fine, agree to her terms and charge her $240 a day (a measly $10 an hour) house sitting rate. See how fast she gets offended then. Tell her you are giving her the 50% off family discount.
WTF? OP is not staying there for free, OP is providing a service which is housesitting
Hey , wanna babysit my kids ? Yes? Great .... that'll be $30 for the privilege of minding my kids . ..... sure , yes , that is how the real world works ..........FFS
Yeah this is how I feel when entrepreneurs use the word "opportunity."
Load More Replies...When I had someone house sit for me I PAID THEM. And I also asked for a list of foods they liked so the fridge was stocked. Then I got them something nice as a souvenir from my trip.
Yes! Exactly what l did when l asked my cousin to house and cat sit for 1 week. l even paid for her bus card for the week she'd be living at my place.
Load More Replies...I’m an international house-sitter, and nobody has EVER asked me to pay “rent” - even though my sits have been in fantastic places (Abu Dhabi, the Azores, N.Z., India, France, etc.) and have lasted up to three months! I’m keeping their pets (and sometimes livestock) fed, healthy, and happy in their absence. THEY offer to pay ME (but I always refuse - that’s why I get repeat bookings). Your sister is seriously out of touch with reality.
That sounds like an awesome gig! I used to pet sit for a friend, in exchange for staying at her place. Thing is, her appartment was pretty sweet and in a great part of the city, while I was living with roommates, barely past the "student appartment" level. We both considered it a win-win and were grateful to each other each time.
Load More Replies...Why is she losing anything? I don't get it? My sister often house sits for me in the summer vacation. I make sure the fridge is full and her favorite towels are there and I usually invite her to something afterwards as a thank you. And no rent of course lol
I'm lost on that one too, that is her home and she's not usually renting it out so what tf is she losing out on?
Load More Replies...There is no way someone can be this stupid...housesit for me while I'm on vacay and pay me...she's lucky she isn't a part of my family, we'd all be tearing her and her friends up
Some sisters are crazy and lack a sense of reality. I had a very mean sister all my life. I finally stopped being nice and just told her to fix her attitude or stay out of my life. Your sister is an A….hole and not in touch with reality. You don’t need her. You are NOT the a..hole in this case, she is.
I took care of a woman's two dogs and stayed in her house on Cape Cod for weeks at a time. I cleaned the house too. Her future daughter-in-law was jealous I was there too often, even though I was there when the owner was gone -- usually visiting her son and this woman. She said I was taking advantage of the situation, even though I wasn't paid. It ended badly. Her sister who lived on the same block was paid to just feed the dogs. It was a big job and eventually her sister refused. So the dogs went to a kennel and one died. I cleaned up after her son and this woman visited. The owner never knew how badly they treated her house. We don't speak, the dogs loved me.
Actually, I understand the Facebook comments supporting the sister charging rent for the house sitting. It's been my experience from posting and reading comments that a majority of people posting opinions don't carefully read before posting. i cannot count the number of times I've posted a comment to receive a reply and then thinking "how in the world did that person come to that conclusion?". Even after re-reading my post several times I came to the conclusion that many, many people have a pre-determined opinion prior to reading a post and then comment based on that opinion. This happens even when you post something that's not even related to how they comment.
Since when is YOUR house more important than MY house? Someone demanding you housesit overnight is blatantly saying I don't care if you get robbed as long as you risk your life to save the things in my home. No one is obligated to watch your possessions instead of thiers. It's either a paid job or a voluntary favor.
The sister lives there - she pays for the mortgage, she has CHOSEN to go on vacation, she's not renting the place normally, so how is she "losing out" if she doesn't charge him?? I spy a total logic fail.
Where do these people come from seriously? No need to get upset over the kn*bs that agreed with that lunatic sister. They probably had their heads screwed on crooked and sideways.
That's LITERALLY what house sitting (for family) is, doing it for free (I say that way b/c YOU are the one doing the "chore") out of the kindness of your heart. WITAF CHARGES for SOMEONE ELSE to watch THEIR house?!?! NTA 3000.
Hahahahahaha. Whew. I deal with profoundly selfish people but this takes the cake. How'd she get that way? Maybe she's recently suffered a head injury and I'm laughing at someone's inability? Good luck.
She's a landlord, so if her company is other landlords, of course her world view is going to be shaped like that. However, failing to see the difference between a tenant and your sister is a complete fail
Load More Replies...Her sister is delusional and so are her "landlord group facebook friends". My daughter does housesits. She gets paid. It's a job.
Exactly. I've never been paid to housesit, but that's just reciprocity between family; they do kind things for me too. Babysitting my neices/nephew? That"s time to play together and have fun, not a job. Other people's kids - yes that's paid.

Next time, make sure to charge her hotel prices when she comes over for Thanksgiving/Christmas.
By her "logic", all of my past employers should've been charging ME an hourly rate for the convenience of living in their buildings for 10 hours a day, lol.
That's landlords for you. They're so used to living off of other people's money that they've forgotten there's any other way.
Hahaha I would of laughed in her face. Why on earth would you pay your sister to do her a favor? That just doesn’t make sense. Def NTA. Your sister is funny tho.
this is the most bs insane thing I've ever heard. Housesitters by definition are doing the homeowner a FAVOR by making sure their house is safe while they're away. It's a freaking service. I swear, the sense of entitlement of people these days....
Her idea of maintenance in her rentals may consist of "you pay for one of my approved repair men" and then slapped with additional rent for having a "guest" for however long the repair guy was there...

Sounds like me. I'm always up and eager to help friends and family when they need it, and I too have mental health problems and the lowest income of the family. However they always do express appreciation, and never take it for granted.

Truth is stranger than fiction, because fiction has to make sense. Maybe this post is exaggerated, but the basic idea is true; given the sister is a landlord, I'm not at all surprised that she'd charge rent to stay at her place, even though it's normally a favour, or a paid job.
Load More Replies...This lady is just greedy. I'm sure she treats ALL of her tenants like this as well. She's probably one of those landlords that don't make repairs and just wants her money. She sounds entitled and delusional.
I wonder if she's said something in lead-up posts about you being desperate for a place to live on FB..? (In a derogatory manner) She may have blocked the post from you... & would "kinda" make a little more sense as to why her friends are as cracked as she is. There has to be more to this story that OP's unaware of. (If so, wonder how many negative and/or situation lead-up posts she's hidden from you in the past... yikes. )
Arey ou Certain that she is Your Sister?🤔 She asked you to "Babysit her house! You do Not need a place to live and even if you did, True Families do Not charge their members rent(Especially for only one week)and the Family member Volunteers to pay for groceries and help with chores, etc. I believe she wants to charge you so she can pay her Mortgage!!!!😠 She needs to take a Course on what defines a Family, Not just Biologically, but also, in Consideration and Loving and Caring for each other! Reminds me a little of when we adopted a cat a few years ago. He cost $40 USD, and had already had all his shots. A couple of years later, we adopted another cat, from the same pet store, so I came prepared with $40 in cash. Surprise, surprise, it's a different adoption agency, so they want $120. I asked them if I could give them three payments of $40, starting with the cash I brought that day. They acted shocked and horrified that I couldn't afford the entire $120 right then, and made a big show of reluctantly agreeing to let me pay them in two separate checks of $60 each, and I couldn't get the cat until I gave them the second check. They seemed very surprised when I wrote the first check for $60 that day, and even more surprised when I returned the following week to give them the second check (the cat is now almost ten years old). Somehow, every time I tell that story, ppl who read it almost always want to make some snarky comment about, "Oh, you thought you should (part 1)
...get the cat for free?" Um, no, where did I say "for free?!" I merely expressed surprise that our first cat was only $40, and the second cat was $120, but I never said I wouldn't pay for the cat *at all.* Which is kinda a roundabout way of saying that I'm appalled that OP's sister expected *them* to pay *her* for the "privilege" of housesitting. Ppl are weird...
Load More Replies...The sister is an idiot. She asks you to do her a favor and house sit but expects you to pay her for the honor of doing so? I would tell her to take a flying leap!
Housesitters aren't free either. She would literally have to pay someone to housesit.
I read many AITA threads and no sane person could ever believe that you are the A******. In fact your sister might be the biggest A****** I have ever read about.
This proves even further that most landlords are delusional. How could you charge your own sister for a favour???? If someone is doing you a favour, you pay THEM! At least with a little gift like chocolates or flowers. Delusional idiot landlord leech
Charge her for the role of sister in her social media need for attention reality show that you provide for her to b***h about. Then cut her off until she pays. You're an actor for her social media page and so, according to her own reasoning standards, should be compensated. No one suffers for free. People hate their jobs but they get paid. Because you have suffered socially you could actually have a case.
If you asked her for a place to live and she said 'this is the price', that would be fine. If she asked you to house sit and you said 'this is the price', that would be fine too. But uh NTA and also landlords are so entitled wtf
At least you now know how your sister is. You don't want this type of person in your life. I know that she's family but you need to stay away from her. She's a user. I bet that this isn't the first time she's done something like this, but probably not to this extreme and I'm pretty sure that she's never done anything to help you. She'll always be this way. Limit your contact with her to family gatherings.
Wow. I just can't believe she had the gall to ask you for a favor and then ask you for money. Double wow. When I ask someone to care for my plants, bring in my mail and housesit for me...I pay them for the inconveniences of adding more to their daily responsibilities. You are NTA. Your sister has a screw loose. It's bad enough that she asked a favor and then asked you for money but to trash you on social media... that's just wrong. I would not have anything to do with her. Ridiculous. I used to dogsit for my brother and he filled the refrigerator and freezer with stuff for me to eat while I was there and paid me a bit as well.
OMG. Did she forget that you are her family and not a tenant. She'd probably charge you for electricity and water after she gets the bill and tallies up what was used. What a douche of a human.
Wow, this is like the written version of Rachel's english trifle (Friends). It what world does the OP's sister makes sense?
She wants to get a house sitter because she is concerned about dangers that THEY will have to handle. And pay for the privilege?! I feel bad for the mom
Wow, I had no idea that when I've hired housesitters in the past I was supposed to be getting THEM to pay ME. Wow.
What's the fair market value for housesitting? Absolutely unbelievable...let her be angry
What kind of an alternate reality is her sister living inside of her own head where a person doing you favor has to PAY YOU to do that favor?
It's almost like giving the power over renting property makes them loose touch with reality and maybe isn't something we should allow as a society...
House-sitting is a service that you charge for & $300/24 hours is a generous family discount!
I would tell her I’m sorry but I really can’t afford to pay for rent for two places so I respectfully decline. Don’t feel bad but I would have to think my relationship with her.
You are NTA. Tell your sister if she is willing to pay someone to house sit YOUR home, then you can house sit for her. If not, you can come by to water her plants but you are unable to stay at her place as you are already paying to live at your own place
What a nutter she has for a sister. I always think there are people who just create drama and stress for us others who just try to go about our business peacefully and often help others selflessly because that’s who we are. I say this as someone who has several of these in her family and I have suffered, let me tell you. Boundaries are great things:
Sounds like a democrat. Double dipping. You give me everything, but you have too work your blank off for me, communosm
As opposed to sueing every state where they didn't win, attempting to acctivate martial law to avoid getting kicked out if the white house, using fear tactics to divide and isolate one side from another, provoking a riot, and claiming the vote was stolen after all that and so much more? Also, were you trying to spell communism?
