Anyone who's ever worked in the food service industry is bound to have met one of these—an extremely rude customer who shouldn't be allowed back into the restaurant. Or to order food ever again! The sad part is, rude customers aren't even that rare.
They're pretty darn common and make the lives of waiters, restaurant employees, and baristas a waking nightmare. Bored Panda wanted to show you some of the things service industry personnel have been through with rude customers, so we collected some of the best posts by servers from all over the net. As you scroll down, upvote the posts that made you feel for these workers, and be sure to leave us a comment with your own experiences serving food in the comment section. Would you like fries with that?
Alexander Kjerulf, the founder and Chief Happiness Officer of ‘Woohoo inc.' told Bored Panda that if your workplace is causing you to forget that you're a human being who's worthy of care and humane treatment, you shouldn't work there anymore. "Quit, and find a better place to work, where they actually care about their staff," he told Bored Panda. "And quit sooner rather than later. The longer you stay, the more they will grind you down until you lose all the energy and optimism you need to move on and find a better job."
Alexander actually made an entire video about quitting a bad job. Meanwhile, you'll find the rest of the insights that he shared with us below. Anyone who's working in the service industry, whether you're a server, a cook, or a manager, should have a read.

Math Is Hard
That's how stupid these people are and they can't even see it. So full up with their own sense of self-worth and so tragically lacking in any form of sense. Common or otherwise.

At my local McDonald’s a cheeseburger is $1.00 & a hamburger is $1.10. Last time I ordered a hamburger the voice on the other end urged me to order a cheeseburger with no cheese to save $.
I do this, but at my McD's they act like that makes me an ass!
Load More Replies...In only 1 instance can I see this as making sense. One local burger joint where I live puts different fixings and sauces on its cheeseburgers as opposed to its hamburgers. That's the only time ordering a cheeseburger without cheese makes sense.
And there goes your cheeseless cheeseburger. I wouldn’t accept the order

Sometimes you just look at a person and think, WTF is going on inside their head!
Alexander was upfront that employees should expect and demand support from their managers. "I know that it's common for restaurants to treat their customers like kings and their employees [badly], but that doesn't mean it's OK," he said.
"99% of people are nice, but the occasional rude client is unavoidable," Alexander from 'Woohoo inc.' said that there's no avoiding rudeness in the long run. "You can learn tricks to deal with them, and that's great, but no one should have to put up with mistreatment."
For Alexander, working in the service industry doesn't mean that others can walk all over you. "Having a service job does not mean that other people get to demean you or belittle you and managers must be willing to step in and protect employees' dignity and mental health."
Latina Waitress Received Racist Note Instead Of Tip
Right?! This is cowardly, leaving their little racist garbage note for a teenage girl to find ffs
Load More Replies...That’s horrible, but also you can’t tell who is or is not a citizen! There are people in their 60’s who still have their childhood accent. It’s several levels of prejudice.

If she's a teenager she was most likely born here and IS a US citizen

I have only started eating out recently, even though we have been able to for the most part for a while. I just want to get vaccinated I feel like it's the final step (I have a problem that would make covid even more deadly for me 🤦♀️) but I think it's near the end of the month they might start the third of four vaccination waves! Living in NZ is surreal right now, it feels disconnected from what I see on tv around the world. Given my risk factor I thank my lucky stars to be where i am, but still take precautions!

Threatening someone with COVID in the UK, whether you're infected or not is classed as "common assault" which carries a jail term of up to six months... I'd track this customer down and if it was confirmed they were infected, I'd put in a complaint to police.
It's not a threat though, it simply suggest that the table be cleaned "effectively". That's not a threat.

I'll be frank. The US tipping system… is a bit weird. It's on the same plane of existence as not posting the full price of a meal or a product with the tax included. However weird forced tipping might be (and how it essentially makes customers, not the employers, pay a large chunk of the workers' wages), it doesn't change the fact that it's a cultural thing in the States. You just do it.

Maybe the customer should quit being such an a*s! I cannot call them by my sister in law's name (Poor Karen)
I do think that if a restaurant can't afford to pay their employees a living wage, then it shouldn't be in business. If you are going hire an employee, then PAY them for their work, for goodness sakes! It just infurates me!!!
It doesn't have anything to do with the restaurant not being 'able' to pay a living wage. You could wonder tho, why waitstaff accept having to work for a lower wage and depending on tips to make their wage reach a minimum amount.
Load More Replies...I actually had a waitress who needed that tip. We went to a local Coney Island, me, my brother, my mom and her Chihuahua who's a registered seizure alert and response dog (she can tell when my mom's going to have a seizure before my mom's even aware and either stop her from going into one or pull her out of it.) This waitress treated us horribly. The dog was small, well-behaved and friendly as all service dogs should be, especially if they're alert dogs. She didn't visit our table unless she was called, and there were only two or three tables in use at the time.
Rude yes but what IF this person was a terrible server who failed horribly? I have had some of the worst non-caring, face in the phone, and once the food was served they disappeared. Yes, they do need to try another job. It can go both ways.
Seen On A Facebook Post On How People Should Tip Their Servers 20%
You have two kinds of veterans: the ones who served out of a sense of patriotism and are humble. Then there are the Keiths, who feel an undue sense of entitlement for the choice they made and probably fly in uniform in order to get an upgrade. The quiet veterans who never ask for thanks find Keiths pathetic and are ashamed to be lumped in with them when people think of veterans.
Don't forget the criminal veterans that attached themselves to Donald Trump. This trash is truly a new breed. Michael Flynn, Dan Crenshaw, the guy who ripped everyone off for the "wall."

The US is a shithole country. In other western countries, waiters and waitresses geht a living wage and tips are only an extra. But in the US, people are exploited AF
In the US it took a factory burning down and killing people to make people realizing locking the emergency exit doors is kinda sh*tty and dangerous.

Wouldn’t Let Him Underage Drink So He Didn’t Tip
And wrote $20 in the tip like that's what he would have left. Bullshit, dickhead.
The waiter could argue that the guy gave a $20 tip and just didn't total it properly.
And accidentally scribbled it out and left a note explaining it?

LOL, you can go to war and kill people being 18, but have to wait until you are 21 until you are allowed to drink a beer. This is clearly not the fault of the waiter/waitress, but many laws within the US are crappy
So you think letting this whiny bastard drink would solve the problem? You can see the maturity level here, I wouldn't trust this idiot to be responsible at all.

Rudeness, however, isn't just linked to tips. Customers from hell find all sorts of ways to belittle servers. From namecalling and ‘flirting' to acting like spoiled, entitled children (no offense to spoiled and entitled kids). However, employees shouldn't rise to the provocations while also protecting their own dignity.

This happened to a friend of mine. Was out talking to his neighbor about their dogs. Not wearing masks, but they're outside, not too close, so my friend just lets it go. At the END of the conversation, neighbor says 'Oh yeah and I tested positive..." A week later, ICU, within a week, in the grave. Luckily my friend didn't get sick.
And this is one of the reasons why restaurants here are taking names and numbers.
I hope their auto tag and or card info was turned in. They just committed a crime.
Not only the waiter should get tested, but all the other customers he served. And his collegues, and the customers they have waited on.
There are laws on this. Although it would be a hassle the server could sue if they came down with covid.
Earlier, I'd had a chat with Alexander from ‘Woohoo inc.' about what people should do when dealing with rude customers. “Keep your cool and remember that whatever abuse they're giving you is no reflection on you as a person,” he said.

They should be charged with child endangerment, and criminal stupidity.
I worked with a very eccentric, quite cranky Restaurant owner (in England, so a proper restaurant, not a burger joint or 'diner'), who once grabbed an unruly child who was running around the place causing a bit of a flap for staff and customers, marched him back to where his parents and their table of 8 / 10 guests were eating and told them in no uncertain terms that if they didn't keep him under control, that he would be marched to the kitchen and deep fried ... Also, at the end of the meal - after they had paid, he informed the whole party that any booking that had any of them as the guests, would be declined. He didn't care as it was hellishly busy in the Summer and would regularly shut down for 3 months in the Winter and jet off to sunny climes (oh, and he paid his part time staff a month's holiday pay and paid his full time staff 3/4 of salary for the period he was away). Delightful man with a brilliant attitude.....

This is not even a child that shouldn't know better; but then he is raising himself
No telling how many germs, bacteria, and possible diseases that kid has all over him now!!
Happens often, though. Pre-covid, I gigged at restaurants working as a Belly dancer- Kids love the sparkly costumes and will often try to follow us around the restaurants. It's not uncommon for their parent's to let them, and while we do try to be engaging with our audience, I have had parents go beyond that actually ask me if I can watch their kids while I'm dancing. Actually, I'm trying to make sure this sword on my head doesn't come off and accidentally stab your kid so if you could get them from under my feet, that would be great...
Most parents are so desensitized to this behavior that it doesn’t even register anymore. All this takes is someone pointing out that it represents a safety hazard for the child and the workers and the problem is solved.
Is that the excuse now for sh*tty behavior? That's just lack of awareness for your surroundings. Are you going to let your child run around the restaurant naked because he does it at home too? Where do you draw the line for that crap.
Load More Replies...To Hugh Cookson. I loved the part about "deep frying" the kid. I was eating at a restaurant and men at the table were asking a female waitress if she was married. She replied she was divorced. The men went on a rant about how the divorce was probably her fault. Then they proceeded to badger her about what she did to make him leave. This incredibly professional waitress mentioned she had been been physically abused and received injuries for trying to protect her kids. Then she waited kindly on them meeting their every need. When I was done eating , the men were still at their table. I went to the waitress away from their table and complimented her on her self-controll and professionalism and told her she should never have to put up with that kind of behavior. Next I found the manager to report in great detail what had happened. He looked me in the eye and sheepishly said, "they are regular customers and he couldn't alienated them." There is no protection for wait staff in these circumstances. We live in of a town of less than 12,000. It isn't easy for a single parent to up and leave her job to find another. I was furious. She probably could have refused to answer their questions, but then lose her tip for being unfriendly to the customer.
Smoking In A Non-Smoking Restaurant Because You Do What You Have To
I'm a smoker and I would yell at her. The times before the smoking ban was horrible
You really are such an addict you can’t last one f*****g hour without a cigarette?
Omg, you're, like, the coolest person in the world because you're smoking indoors--on top of that, when it's AGAINST THE RULES to smoke indoors! So cool, wow, superstar! Admirable!
i'm a smoker and this pisses me off! get off your a**e & go outside or just wait until you are finished with your meal and leave. i had a friend who, when invited to go somewhere with me, would always ask if you could smoke where we were going. if not, then she would decline coming along. eventually stopped asking her to go. even her hubby got annoyed with her attitude about smoking. i have sat through live performances, dinners, flights, etc. without complaining about not being able to smoke because it's not that important. btw, currently quitting now with a total stop date by july...i still fall off the tobacco wagon occasionally but will still keep trying.
“That customer doesn't even know you, so there's no way it could be you. But on the other hand, don't be subservient. Don't be afraid to stand up for yourself and tell customers that abuse is not tolerated. And if it persists, hand them over to a manager as soon as you can and let them deal with it,” Alexander explained how we should deal with problematic people. It's all about striking a balance between being professional and having a spine.
However, Alexander pointed out that not all customers who behave badly are bad people in and of themselves. There's a bit of nuance there! “It can be a good person having a bad day and that's why they're acting out.”
Stop Tipping And These Folks Will Land Better Jobs
That last sentence works for me. Because if you stop tipping wait staff in a culture that requires the customer to make up staff wages, and they DO all leave for better jobs there will be no one to FEED YOU AND YOU WILL HAVE TO GO AWAY
Ikr, like, if you want them to stop working at your favorite restaurant, you are big dumb

Load More Replies...Who do they want to serve them their food? I have always been utterly baffled by this type of statement, it makes no sense.
What baffles me is the restaurant service system we use. Why cant restaurants just pay servers a living wage? Why should customers have to pay for the food AND the service. Every other industry pays their employees a fair living wage for their work. Why isn't food service the same way? The system is backward and broken and desperately needs to be fixed.
Load More Replies...Ah yes, no doubt your poor harassed waitress can go outside and pick a nice new job from the Job Tree. Or hell, why not two? It's just that easy!

I've never been to any country other than the US where a tipping is seen an obligation because wages are too bad to live on. Serving is part of the service so it should be included in the price of food like it is in other developed countries. It's almost as bad as the tax not being included in the prices.
Maybe then you should learn how to cook and stay the hell home - you cheap ass

Though that doesn't change the fact that some customers really are rude because they thrive on it and know that being bullies works (sometimes). “The sad truth is that some customers act this way because they've learned that it works and will get them discounts or preferential treatment,” Alexander, the Chief Happiness Officer at ‘Woohoo inc.' said.

Worst one was our waitress sat down and had dinner with her friends for 40 minutes. She got our order wrong and when we told her we didn't order the food she brought she said "Well this is good too" and walked away. There are legitimate reasons not to tip but ideally it is best to leave as soon as you start having issues. Rude staff and dirty tables would have been my sign to not bother to order at all and go somewhere else.

She must be obviously using his card bc of the Marco is obviously last. The fact that she was so entitled to expect a 'Salute' for 'her Service' is Disrespectful and Appalling. Deployed where? That ticket was signed in Savannah, Ga. On 2nd look Marco A has to be a MAN, Ya'll...I have @USNVYVet Friends. They were deployed on Navy Nuclear Battleships. This is some BS. For the married spouse of any Serving Member that is Deployed or Stateside, you can best believe that if they wanted the Big Bucks she should have staked out Military CONTRACTORS!! 😡 Real Soldiers that don't get carried off the cargo holds Stateside get a Real Nice Flag and Taps. Salute Me. Fr fr. Trust me VA Benefits sometimes cost your Soul. Bish be glad your Man was most likely deployed on a Naval Base bc if he had been on a Battleship back in the Day...Be Grateful we see u.
Load More Replies..."Salute me. I'm a navy spouse?" - WHAAAAAT? Like how entitled can you be.
This behaviour disgusts me. The military isn't defending the US of A or Europe. It is actively attacking other countries for their resources. The last time there was fighting on mainland American soil (not Pearl Harbour) was 1865. It is perverse to be considered brave when you are actually fighting ill-equipped farmers trying to protect their families.
It's not war if you fund a long chain of terrorist organizations to start some sh*t and then blow everything up in an attempt to destroy them, though. It's called "Peaceful Intervention", meaning that the UN can't tell you off for stealing Syraqistan's oil in the name of freedom.
Load More Replies...Is this only an American thing, or is it that same with spouses in other countries too?
wtf?! that comment of being a military spouse is 'serving' the same as the service member is bullshite! as a military 'brat' and former military wife as well as a military ombudsman, this attitude is annoying as well as disgusting. it's similar to the wives/husbands 'wearing' their spouses rank, expecting others to bow & scrape to them. sorry...there is the old adage that if the military had wanted you to have a wife & family they would have issued them with your gear. harsh but true. suck it up, you spousal buttercups!
True -- some spouses are as nice as they can be but there are others who have nothing but contempt for other military members who are a lower rank than their own sponsor (spouse). It's a different aspect of "stolen valor".
Load More Replies...To go to war from home?! Omfg this has to qualify for stolen valour, surely!
"Salute me, I'm a navy spouse" ??? The Heck??? Serve in the military yourself than maybe we can talk about saluting. The nerve of this people....

This is true for a lot of these: if I can't see where it says "store copy" or "customer copy" I tend not to believe these.

Hardly worth the inconvenience of cleaning it. Bin the lot. So called tip included
Using Having Kids As An Excuse Not To Tip Servers Who May Also Have Kids To Feed
These are starting to tick me off. I'm from a "tipping" country but everyone still understand the tip is an additional amount you give for excellent service and not something that can be expected from the customer. I really hope the governments of the folks in the posts will crack down on the bloody employment laws so restaurant owners have to pay their servers properly rather than expecting customers to do it.
But the people who leave these stupid little notes know exactly the situation. If you can't afford to tip in the US, then you can't afford to eat out. Treat it like a sales tax. I agree it's ridiculous and outrageous that customers have to bear the responsibility, but right now they do and they need to STFU about it.
Load More Replies...HA! Sorry but... seriously? Having two kids prevents that person from tipping? My mom had 4 kids and still tipped a good amount. Either way, please don't use your kids as an excuse.
I remember one time my boyfriend and I had a server who kept disappearing and barely showing up. It wasn’t a big deal we were doing fine and they seemed busy. She showed back up to our table and you could tell she had been crying. She kept apologizing and said there was something wrong with her son. It broke my heart. We have a toddler and I can’t imagine something happening to her. I remember we left her a 30% tip. But yes even servers have kids and are doing their best. You don’t get to skip out on a tip and blame it on your kids.
If that’s why you had kids, you are lacking in more places than one.

I Shouldn't Have To Tip On This Premium Service Because I'm Poor
They keep track of that stuff, and you get flagged but nice try. It may take a few times to flag it but it gets flagged.
Yep. My account got flagged for that and I only ever reported genuinely missing items. I hadn't even bothered reporting small missing items or mistakes in my order. I only reported when I had someone at my house with no food at all because they'd missed an entire mains from the order. And we asked for replacement, not refund. That ended up costing us extra, too, because we felt we needed to tip the second driver. They said they would no longer honor our reports of missing items. Given how often it happened, that wasn't acceptable to us. We stopped using them. We rarely have that issue with Grubhub. It makes me wonder if Doordash's ordering system didn't present the orders to the restaurant in an easy to read fashion, since we're ordering from many of the same restaurants we did before with far fewer mistakes.
Load More Replies...I have only had 2xs were stuff was missing from my door dash order. One of times it was something super small so I didn't even worry about it. The other time I just went to the location and picked it up myself. I did not tip any less. Mistakes happen. Was a little annoyed on the second one? Yeah. But again, life happens

Pay your staff a living wage. Not $4 an hour.
Load More Replies...In normal countries where wait staff are paid a living wage, sure.
Load More Replies...They have a point though, tipping is completely optional. The server is not entitled to my money as a customer, the server is entitled to a fair wage from their employer. The attack is unacceptable of course, but demanding a tip from a customer isn't right either.
Servers are NOT entitled to a fair wage from their employers. They are paid less than half the minimum wage which is currently $7.25 an hour in some states. Servers usually make less than $5.00 an hour and the reason for this is their tips are expected to compensate for the lack of hourly pay. It has always been stressed that servers WORK FOR TIPS for a reason.
Load More Replies...A tip SHOULD be optional, and I agree servers should be paid more, but in many places in the US servers receive lower minimum wages than other jobs and really need the tips to get by. It's not cool to punish them when it's a systemic issue
Maybe the waiter/waitress wasnt the best but they tried the hardest they could. When they get a cruel note instead of a tip it absolutely breaks them because they tried their best to make your Majesty's food perfect
When People Put Fake Tips With Religious Stuff Or Annoying Jokes In The Jar
Is that racist?? I thought it was that weird "made you look, punch ur arm" game ppl play, or the sign for ok? I will make sure I never use this again though (I don't think I have ever done it lol I go for a thumbs up), if it has been morphed into something else!

At least you can now put your finger through the circle and punch the racists five times.

I Was Tipped At Wisconsin State Fair, I Don’t Get Paid Enough To Deal With This
I missed the bit in the Bible where Jesus conned a poor waiter out of their earnings...
If being Christian involves being this much of a d1ck I want nothing to do with it.
It is definitely not supposed to involve this much rudeness I promise. Pretty sure the Bible actually doesn't say to go around pestering total strangers about adopting our beliefs lol so like... yeah not everyone is like this. That said I get if there's other reasons you want nothing to do with it, and that's totally legit! =)

Bragging On Facebook About Tipping $0.01 And Telling The Waiter/Waitress “Don’t Be So Miserable”

I would just ignore them and not give them the service they got last time. Then next week they will be nice to you again and tip. Worked every time for me.
Load More Replies...I'd ensure that they weren't there every week if I were the wait staff
Maybe the poor server just had a death in the family and can’t afford to lose a shift. Or she just found out she has something awful. Or her dog was stolen, her husband walked out, her vacation got cancelled. You never know what’s going on in someone else’s life. Telling someone to smile as though they were your own personal cabaret is presumptuous.

This might be from someone who can't easily afford a tip at all and saved up coins for a while. Or they grabbed whatever cash they had in a pants pocket. At least they did tip. Tobacco is no dirtier than anything else that's on money. At least he tipped. You are ungrateful and seem entitled. You should not be delivering if you feel too good for this tip
Money is so dirty anyway that a bit of tobacco won't make much difference. Paper money is even worse because a lot of people use it to take cocaine.
I'd be less worried about cocaine than paper currency which has spent time in someone's sock or bra.

Not Tipping Their Server Because They Wore A Mask
Exactly..People need to remember this more often and, not not tip just because they are following the rules.
Load More Replies...Not going to judge this one without seeing what the mask looked like. The customer didn’t say that they didn’t like that the server was wearing a mask. Wonder if it was a political or a tasteless mask the server was wearing.
Tipping With An Iou
The tipping culture in the states is so messed up, not only because its completely unethical for places to pay so little that they rely on tips so heavily, but it gives douchebags a platform to try and belittle and offend others to boost their own misguided ego
Correct. The customer chooses whether they want to pay for something they already received. The system is based entirely on the ethics of semi-anonymous individuals, and places the risk purely on the employee, not the business.
Load More Replies...Yes but also it's more than just that. Even in places where you get paid by the hour people still let you get treated like dirt and won't stick up for you or let you stick up for yourself.
Load More Replies...America really needs to fix their wages issue. Relying on tips must be extremely stressful on what is already a very hard job.
Indeed. It CAN be proliferous, whilst establishing YOUR own clientele/customer base, however. Thirty years, and it got me my PhD. I've been SO out of the 'serving' industry for the last 10 years, thank the Heavens!! (Or whatever/whomever you believe in!!)
Load More Replies...Rude customers are everywhere, but being angry at customers who don't tip is really just an American issue. If tipping is optional, then the waiters have no grounds to complain if someone doesn't tip. If tipping is compulsory, then add 20% onto all prices, and tell customers that is the price they must pay. I would never want to pay more money than I have to for something. If a meal costs $10, then why pay $12? American restaurants should just scrap tipping, and pay workers a living wage.
It can't be that hard, when 20% is expected for wait staff, to automatically put it on the bill? In Germany, the tip is usually paid in addition - voluntarily and without any obligation.
Every state is different. I agree it sucks for the workers. There will always be people who scream "'MURICA IS DIFFERENT AND WE DO WHAT WE WANT!"

There was a woman in my area who realised her dream by opening a lovely little cake shop and cafeteria down by the lakeside in a prime position. She envisioned it as a nice place where young mothers could meet up for a chat over coffee and cupcakes. What actually happened instead was that mothers did indeed show up... with pre-packed food for their kids rather than buying anything and left crusts and other scraps all over the place, used the cafe tables to change nappies and left the soiled remains behind, and let their toddlers run around trashing the joint to their heart's content, over the protests of the poor harassed cafe staff. The place ended up being shut down in a matter of months, and never reopened. This is why we can't have nice things.
Some people are absolute trash. I feel bad for that woman. I worked in retail for many years and there were a few times a parent left their baby’s dirty diaper on a stack of clean folded clothes and a ton who let their kids run wild around the store destroying the tables and climbing on them.
