Restaurant Owner Berates Customers For Not Tipping Their Servers Who Work For $3 An Hour, Faces Major Backlash Online
Tipping culture in the United States is bizarre to a lot of people. Even if you are from there, the idea that you are required (well, not technically but at the very least obligated) to tip over 15% at any restaurant is a bit strange. Ideally, you’ll tip 20-25% if you receive excellent service or if you have a large party, but even if the service is not great, it is insulting to leave too little. There are many unspoken rules about tipping that can be difficult to navigate, but one thing is clear: people working in the service industry love shaming bad tippers. And while it is sometimes appropriate for servers to call out stingy tippers, the crux of the issue is that servers should be paid enough by their employers in the first place. Then they would not have to rely on large tips.
Recently, one restaurant was put on blast on Reddit for a hypocritical post they shared demanding customers tip their servers better. Below, you can read the post yourself, as well as some of the responses it has received, and decide whether you think the issue here is the customers or the business itself. It is completely understandable to be concerned about your employees’ livelihoods and want them to earn decent wages, but is alienating your customer base the way to go about that? The owners of the restaurant in question, Fireside Grille, certainly have the power to provide their servers decent wages without guilting their customers into tipping more. If they want to cling to paying servers dollars under the minimum wage for non-tipped jobs, which is $7.25 in Tennessee, there are ways to ensure larger tips. For example, some restaurants add a required 20% tip at the bottom of every bill to ensure that servers are paid well and to eliminate the guesswork that comes with allowing customers to create their own tips. If they want to give more, they always can, but this way, servers don’t have to worry whether or not they will be compensated for their work.

Requiring customers to tip a certain amount may sound abrasive to some people, but the alternative is paying servers higher wages. Businesses should not be as hesitant to do this as they are, but it is the safest way to ensure that servers are provided for. Particularly when tipping has seen a great decrease in recent years, with the pandemic discouraging many people from eating out and inflation leading many people to tighten their budgets. According to a study by One Fair Wage and the Food Labor Research Center at U.C. Berkeley, 83% of restaurant workers reported earning less tips during the pandemic. Meanwhile, many Americans are advocating for a $15 federal minimum wage across the board, with the elimination of a “tipped minimum wage”, but it does not appear to be happening any time soon.
Clearly, the tipping system in the US is outdated and could use a serious facelift, but I’m not sure that businesses contributing to the problem have the right to berate their customers for leaving small tips. That would work out at about £2.50 an hour in the U.K. - not even enough to by a sandwich or a pint of beer. Our legal minimum hourly rate (and it's still not enough by far) is £9.18 / just over $11 - almost four times more than this tight a*s restaurant owner. Even Nigeria - one of the poorest countries in the world - has an average hourly rate of 1950NGN, which is around $4.58. What the actual f**k is wrong with America??
The way it works is that, if the employee didn't make enough tips to meet normal minimum wage, the restaurant has to pay the employee up to that wage. The server will always make at least $7.25/hr, the variable is how much the owner has to pay. The staff can make more than that off of tips, but it runs the risk of owners illegally dipping into the pool for themselves down to the point their staff makes barely minimum wage. It was implemented during the depression to ease the burden on restaurants as a temporary measure, and then the greedy oligarchs made sure it never changed.

Agreed. Pay your staff. Tips should be just that, an additional reward for good service, NOT an expected additional cost of eating. Quite personally, I DESPISE tipping. It is silent consent to a corrupt and vicious system that exploits servers to the benefit of the restaurant. Load More Replies...Pay your staff. As a server and restaurant manager for a decade. Firstly tips were never part of it, secondly my salary was 7 times higher than your wage. Thirdly all my trainings and overtime were paid, every new skill learned gave you a raise. Four - as a manager I NEVER kept tips even if given to me, I placed them in tip jar for staff to split. Lower paid staff should keep tips given for GOOD service and not as a top up for salary. My low skilled low paid job still paid me enough to live independently, to go out to eat, take holidays, go back for masters and save money. I a server with years of experience will tell you I will tell anyone who I meet to stop supporting businesses however small or big they are if they don't pay their staff a living wage, because if I'm hungry, living out of a car then you can bet service will be below standard. When employees cannot afford basics the quality of work declines

People don't like to hear it, but the only way to stop this terrible system is to stop playing into it. Stop tipping. Period. No more tips. The companies must then pay the full wage themselves. We should only tip on top of a reasonable wage. My tips should reward great service from great staff, not reward the owners so they don't have to pay a minimum wage. Again, they MUST pay the employee up to minimum wage if tips didn't make up the difference.

Load More Replies...My son and his girlfriend work in a pub and recently funded their 1 week holiday (nothing special) only from their tips. They didn't save on tips for months... just a few weeks. In Germany, guests in gastronomy are not even expected to tip the service staff... but many do it anyway, when "cheerful staff" provided good service. Why are the employees (usually) in a good mood? BECAUSE THEY GET A REASONABLE HOURLY PAY! (around € 11 an hour, minimum wage) Fun fact: When customers "misbehave", the staff don't have to put up with it. Those guests aren't served, or even thrown out. Because the customer isn't "always right", it's just a customer ... a guest!
The history of tipping in the United States is pernicious. It is related to superior/inferior social roles...the servant...NOT the server...and the entitled who are served. ..who may, or may not, choose to acknowledge the service. It is an ugly practice, but it is embedded deep in Unitedstatesian culture. As a food service worker I felt this condescending attitude and resented it. It would be so much better if staff in the food industry could do the work they are skilled for and just get paid for doing their jobs.

Load More Replies...In the US at least, if tips plus wage don't make up to at least minimum wage, the employers has to make up the difference anyway I believe. So the servers would never be getting below minimum wage, but by demanding the customers tip more, the owner is hoping that extra money to make up the difference won't come from his own profits. Not something you can demand of others!

If a business cannot or will not pay a living wage they should not be in business. It is just that simple.

Load More Replies...I'm curious about the owner taking tips. This isn't the first time I've read this and, at least according to the owner, they do claim to act as a server. But there have been plenty of stories about owners taking or denying tips (those that give notice) to servers and I wonder if this is even legal? When I tip a server, it is for their service. That is money intended for them. I've asked servers about tip sharing and everyone I have spoke with seems to like it, so as far as splitting tips, I see it as a choice. But can business owners/ managers legally withhold tip money? Seeing how the pay is so low, I would think not. But this is the US, so I guess I wouldn't be surprised if there was no protection. Would me noting on the tip that it is intended for x (server name) make any difference?
In our country fortunately the tillslip (receipt) shows the waiter's name and the tip amount, and it is usually charged to a card, however, if you think the owner is a POS, you just ask the waiter whether they get their tips, and if they say no, then you give them cash and tell them to hide it. I haven't had a waiter say "no" in about 10 years, so generally the tip is included on the bill and the amount recorded, so potentially the waiter could raise a labour claim.

Load More Replies...I'm a server in Canada, I work for an agency that staffs events like weddings, banquets, hotels, restaurants, etc. My wage is dependent on the contract the Agency signs with the client, my MINIMUM wage working for them is $21/hr, if I get tips, that's just extra cash for other stuff. Canada is still behind on a lot of things, thankfully, wages are somewhat much more reasonable than the dystopian bullshït that is the "great" US of A
Waiters from the States are very welcome to come to work in Croatia. We have a labour shortage during the season and the basic pay is a few times bigger here. Plus it's a safe and beautiful European country.

What do you pay when there are no customers or before opening and after closing hours. Do you pay an increased wage when they are working for you , or do you expect customers to pay that also ?
Same wage. Servers have a lot of side work that they have to do before they can leave and go home. So yes when I'm wiping down the tables and refilling salt and pepper and ketchup etc etc etc I am still only making $2.23 an hour...sucks huh?

I am a server/bartender who makes only 2.13hr. Only hosts, bussers, kitchen staff make between 7.25hr ~11hr...that being said servers and bartenders make only 2.13hr plus tips ... I always give 110% above and beyond service and get tipped out that night so no employer is stealing anything .... There have been nights where I only make $17 because people don't believe in the tipping culture; please tip your servers because In the end the money you tip is all we get because 2.13 after taxes isn't s**t ....
I just looked up the menu at the fireside grill. Here's a fun game, lets same what a server can afford with her wages. After 1 hour work, she can have a soft drink another hour for a soup. After another 5 hours, a hamburger steak. Add another hour of work for a side of mushrooms to go with that hamburger steak. Imagine working an entire 8 for one meal at the restaurant she works at...yeah the customers are the stingy ones
And is that before or after tax income? That server may need to clock some OT to get that meal after income tax & payroll taxes has been deducted and sales tax has been added to the bill.
Load More Replies...Restaurant owners/bar owners don't make huge profits. Most places would have to raise their prices to pay the servers that kind of wage. For 5 servers it's the difference between 15 and over $100 an hour. I'm not trying to stand by crappy business owners but it's also not their fault the system is in place. Most severs I know make $30+/hr.(granted they only work 5 hour shifts) I've done math on this stuff before and prices would have to go up 10%+ to make the numbers work. So it takes a lot of risk to raise your prices, eliminate tipping, raise your servers wages, make it public that tipping isn't necessary at your establishment, and try to stay competitive with other restaurants serving up similar faire. I agree that tipping is an imperfect process and should be eliminated. It's not as easy as people think. The government needs to make the change. Plenty of servers have returned to work after their great resignation because they still make better money than hourly wage jobs.
Plenty of countries did it. Also if you're expected to tip 20% anyways. Then please by all means raise your food prices by 20%. It will end up beneficial for the servers, and more profits and customers can leave a tip only because of fantastic service they received and not a pity payment for servers to top up. I as a server for decades never considered tips as part of my salary. When I did get tips I was always pleasantly surprised and thanked the customer as it means they enjoyed their stay and I did quality work. But probably because I never had to worry about health insurance, medical care, food or electricity bills. My salary was sufficient to cover my expenses and entertainment and tips well I don't care much for them. Great performance gave me monetary bonuses. When staff is fatigued, tired, afraid of homelessness and hunger then how can they offer you a great efficient friendly service? 3$ doesn't even cover transport to work, hygiene products, night in bed.

Why would I assume I'm paying for part of the experience rather than the whole thing? How is us overpaying for the food and experience not part of the income for the servers? Then again, the servers choose to be in this role and they can choose to leave. I did. Real change is going to come from people taking action and not feeling bad about hurting the pockets of servers. It's not the restaurant owner that gets to make up the wages when it comes to tips it's actually up to the state... I was a server for ten years... Also if the servers decide to quit and get another job then that means that the restaurant doesn't have servers.. which means that when you guys go out with your families for special occasions there are no servers there to serve you.

i have worked several years in restaurants in many jobs, busboy,waiter dishwasher,bartender- in very good restaurants. tips means "to insure peomt service". if restaurants paid these workers more wages then then the cost would be passed on to the customer. so a $10 meal would cost $12 to 15. many of you would not be able to eat out as often as you do now.. and servers would have no incentive to please you. no wine reccomendations or food tips on freshness your dining exoerience would be less enjoyable. restaurants that are very busy offer good food and good service. while i support an increase in wages, some staff are liusey workers. if you are stingy, don't expect good service on your next visit.
Tipping 'too little' is only 'insulting' if you've received great service, which I usually do. I find that servers almost always go out of their way to be friendly, prompt and professional and I always tip as generously as I can over and above 20% for those great experiences. It's a tough way to make a living.
I have been a server my entire life and make very good money doing it ..that being said if tipping was stopped and we were paid 15 an hour you would see a lot of servers leave the industry (no experienced server would work for that)…also the cost of your food would while eating out would almost double if raising the server wage to 15 an hour ….listen it’s america it’s 2022 it’s customary to tip…get over it or stay home …and you should at least be leaving 20% at the very least …
As a waitress for 25 years, stop demanding that these employers pay servers more. This is absolutely killing what servers make through tips. They've taken this notion and converted it into a tip pool situation and using their having to pay more hourly to justify splitting tips with everyone in the damn building. Shooting yourselves in the damn foot. I make infinitely more in tips than a restaurant would ever pay me in an hourly wage and this is killing that.

I think a lot of people who are saying that the server should have been paid more are forgetting that the concept of tips is also built into how much you pay for your meal. So, you tip because the servers compensation isn't built into the price of your food. If you don't want to have to tip anymore, get ready for the price of your meal to go up by 20%. Yeah, you don't have to tip anymore and the waitresses get a viable salary. But that also means you're going to be paying a lot more for your meal. So really, the customers are the stingy ones here. And everyone who argues otherwise is being intentionally ignorant of how this all works.
First and foremost, I know some people are going to take this comment as defending the restaurant, which is NOT the case. If your business can't pay its employees a living wage and still make enough profit for you to live on yourself, then you shouldn't be in business. That said, in today's Corporate States of America, I DO have sympathy for small business owners that actually try to pay a living wage (unlike this guy). Regardless whether you're a bar/restaurant, a construction company, a plumber, a grocery store, or whatever, you need supplies, and odds are that your supplier is probably a big corporate entity that charges you as much as they can, because heaven forbid they don't make a few BILLION in profits this year. Then, if you rent or lease business space (office or storefront), your landlord takes as much as they can possibly charge. Add in other business expenses, and if you're trying to pay a living wage and still make ends meet yourself, margins can be slim.
If restaurants paid their employees more then food and drink prices would go up by %20 and, most likely, not all of that would go to the employees. People who've never worked in customer service don't understand that we people too and tipping is the culture for a reason. If you undertip then you're a bad human being regardless of your excuses or who you want to blame for wages. Go ahead and tell me I deserve to be paid more as you give me %10 and tell me how much you liked my drinks... I won't be as friendly the next time and you'll wait longer. Hear me out, but why only servers? There's plenty of other professions that don't get tipped for their minimum wage jobs. You should get paid more, by your employer. Otherwise if I tip you then you are employed by me if it is to top up your hourly rate. The servers of the coffee place I visit all get minimum 14 an hour, barista makes 21. I tip them always, I tip them not because they need it, but because they are always amazing bunch of people taking care of my order. I'm okay paying more for my drinks and food. 20% menu rise would be beneficial for the company and the staff as now you know you get paid a proper hourly rate for slow days, you are guaranteed living wage even if you serve a table that doesn't tip. But when they do tip that money is extra for your amazing skills as a mixologist and server. And you get to keep tips as a treat instead of splitting between rent and bills. Do you tip cleaners, factory workers, delivery workers? Why servers and not tip kitchen pot wash?
Load More Replies...I waited tables in fine dining for 10 years at a ski resort in a state where I made $3.15 an hour.. if someone didn't tip I literally had to pay outta picket to serve them. Spare me about others culture and practice the one you are in. I have to tip out everyone else involved based on percentage of sales including the host, the busses, the bartender, some to the kitchen. If you drink I have to pay the bartender a certain percentage of alcohol sales. If you didn't tip I still pay him the same. Basically paying to wait on you. And $3 does not cover my taxes and Medicare and such so I'd owe the house money based on my credit card tips. Yes paycheck in the negative. Now say States where the service minimum wage is the same as everyone else's at aprox $10 cannot afford a heavy staff leading to poor service such as 1 bartender in a busy joint and 1 server running their asses off often bussing and seating as well. Go 1 state over where it's $3hr= lots of staff good service.
So if every server got the receipt with get a real job written on it so then they go and get a real job and then there's not enough staff at your favorite restaurant so you have to wait for 2 hours for a table and then get terrible service. Do you know that I had a table of four girls threatened to beat me up and wait out in the parking lot and get me because I told them that they had to pay for a salad?????!!!???;!!!; Try being a server and all you would shut the heck up.
The prices in restaurants will go up 10 to 20% if they try to make this change on their own without government changes. They would no longer be competitive with other restaurants. Plus if they eliminated tipping and paid the servers $20/hr and raised the prices, a lot of good servers would leave the industry because they made twice that before. So then the dude that could barely scan your items at target will be responsible for not picking his nose before bringing you your food.

Servers are taxed on 15% of their sales. It doesn’t matter how much they actually make in tips, it is across the board expected that their income is 15% of their total sales.

I don't have a problem tipping the standard %15 (before tax, people! You do not tip on taxes), but I do have a problem with owners like this who feel it's up to the patrons to pay his employees.
Fast food Restaurants have no problem paying min wage and making a profit. I use to serve and bring paid below state min should be outlawed. A tip is just that a thank you for going above and beyond. If you can't make it as a serve type restaurant you need to rethink what you are doing.
I dont necessarily agree with his statement, but a lot of people commenting might not see the bigger picture. There is a lot of things people don't understand about owning a privately-owned restaurant. Between rent, utilities, purchasing the glassware, liquor, food, plates, cutlery, and etc, this list goes on and on. Also paying the kitchen labor a living wage, because most states don't require them to receive tips. The actual money that that owner receives on the bottom line might shock most people. Everyone wants to have multiple choices when going out to eat. Well that comes at a cost.... Tipping. Tipping is the cost. It allows the owners to pay the servers a lower wage and stay afloat. I don't think anyone should have to pay for bad service. But just remember. We are all human and we have our bad days, weeks, even years. I know there are all different circumstances that can be told and lots of opinions about this subject. This is mine.
The tip should just be included in the charge. Tough truth but some...cultures(PC edit), foreigners and cheap people don't tip. It's wrong. A restaurant can't pay all the servers a "living wage" because they have paper thin profit margins mostly. People who say that they should earn a living wage probably don't know much about the restaurant industry. My parents owned 3 simultaneously back in the 80's and 90's and I was old enough to understand in the later days how close the margins are. Calling the guy out for saying "they pay $3" is also petty and misunderstood. That's extra $35 on a 40 a week goes towards your taxes which are not removed from your check.
Seems like almost everyone missed the point here. I've been in the service industry for almost 25 years, so maybe I see it differently. Here's the thing, guys. We DO need to tip our servers-ALWAYS. YES, tipping culture SUCKS. YES, restaurants need to pair a fair wage instead. But it's a whole-àss system. It's been around for years and years and years. Lashing out at ONE owner of ONE restaurant isn't going to change it. Even that owner themselves couldn't change it. Fireside is a national outfit, which means that owner is a FRANCHISE owner, and still has to do what Fireside corporate says. And even if the owner "dips in", that's not an excuse not to tip. Because those servers RELY on tips to LIVE. So when you stiff your server, it DOESN'T teach anyone a lesson, and it DOESN'T hurt the restaurant-it hurts the SERVER. A LOT. So until things change, no matter how much you may disagree with the idea, ALWAYS TIP YOUR SERVER.
Again, I know tipping culture sucks the wad. But there are a lot of things even the owner can't change. Not a franchise owner, anyway. I think this person was honestly trying to stand up for their servers. I don't necessarily see that as a bad thing. Especially in a country where bosses often don't give even half a shít about their customers. And no, paying then $3 an hour doesn't mean the owner doesn't care. Just to play devil's advocate here. What if you looked at it like this. Tipping encourages servers to give better service. The better the service the more money they make. While if they recieved a liveable hourly wage the incentive to do better would no longer be there because good or bad service they would get paid anyway.

This is disgusting! I'm from the UK and tipping has never been a big thing there because everyone gets paid the living wage and tips are just extra. I have worked as a waitress too in a tiny cafe and the tips at the end of the week was always a shock to me and I never expected it. Pay your staff better and stop relying on customers to pay more than the meal is actually worth! Your gonna lose business as I would go somewhere else if you demanded a tip!
In Washington servers get close to $15 an hour. Often prices are more than in Idaho where servers are usually paid much less. So is a guest a jerk because they choose to pay less in WA?

The restaurant's biggest competitor is the grocery store. Imagine buying a Fettuccine Alfredo for example. Depending on where you go, it could range from $15-$20 at a restaurant. What's in a Fettuccine Alfredo? Well it's a box of Fettuccine which sells for $2, and Alfredo sauce, which sells for $2. A $4 product served at 400-500% more in a restaurant. That price point is what you as a customer would buy at a grocery store. Restaurants get this price for a lot cheaper at a wholesale cost, especially if it's a franchise. So for owners having the audacity to guilt trip customers for not tipping, just think of how much you'd be saving if you did it at home, instead of spending $20 bucks more (not including tip + tax), that could take 10 min to make at home. (On a side note, unless they're a 5 star restaurant, the majority of restaurant food is frozen, processed, and boxed)
As a cheap git, this is why I only order stuff I can't make at home (easily). Still cannot for the life of me understand why someone would pay $20+ for spaghetti and a slice of garlic bread. I will say when I worked in restaurants back in the 80s/90s most of the food was fresh or frozen fresh. No processing other than stuff like deveined shrimp or precut chicken wings. If you eat at a restaurant that is getting everything from a restaurant supplier boxed, frozen and processed you better be in the military or a cafeteria. They did have a place in Gatlinburg TN back few years ago. When Gatlinburg caught on fire back in 2016 the restaurant was burnt down. I had a friend that worked there back in the late 2000s as a waitress and it was awful. She was only getting TN's waitresses min. wage back then which was the $2.17 an hr. During the off season hurt all of the waiters and waitresses. Luckily when the restaurant burnt down they never rebuilt it(at least it wasn't back in 2017 my last time ever in Gatlinburg. I moved out of TN in Aug 2017 and nvr went back). Fyi Sevier Co has the highest sales tax in the state of TN.(in 2017 it was over 15%...Dunno how much it is now)

I am a 20+ year veteran of the restaurant industry (now retired) and have held every position from dishwasher to owner. What the general public does not realize is that the profit margin of most restaurants is razor-thin. This is because restaurants have a significantly higher overhead than many other types of businesses. You want to do away with tipping culture and pay the servers a living wage? Sure, sounds great. Are you willing to pay $20 for a cheeseburger or $8 for an order of fries? I hope so because that will be the result. Menu prices would have to be raised significantly to cover the increased labor costs and remain profitable and in business. The tipping model is what allows restaurants to keep their menu prices reasonable. Take that away and most independent restaurants would have to shut their doors.

Once you stop this practice then you will really have a harder time getting service and help. It's how things are and although bazaar than we are paying the restaurant's owners salary, as soon as it's ended most career professional service people will bail. If they don't have the potential to make really good money they will have to go do something else.
I think the wage should be raised to a living wage, and not need to rely on tips to make up the difference. (By living wage, I mean not just barely making ends meet, but with room to spare, getting ahead. For example, median rent, or mortgage payment on 15-year fixed with 0 down (including taxes, insurance, HOA, PMI, etc), should be <25% of take-home pay. Also, when I tip, I want it to primarily go to the server I'm tipping (maybe some shared with the cooks too), not split among the entire staff (some of whom may not have been directly involved with my meal.)
Forget asking owners to do this. Make them. Only a few states require servers to be paid the state minimum. $3 is ridiculous but they will do it if it is legal.
I always love the excuse from business owners that they don't even pay themselves anything. Because it's technically correct. They don't receive a regular paycheck. A lot of the times what they do is take what's called an owner's draw from the business account. It's an excuse of lot of small business owners use to try to make themselves as unassuming and faultless as possible. The owner of the company that I work for doesn't get paid a salary either. She also has three large houses, a boat and takes regular vacations overseas. It's a scam.

This sounds like Tostados grill here in Cincinnati. When I worked there I was paid 2.12$ an hr, the owners would work as the bartender and take the tips, we had a girl who had her mixology license and instead of letting her run the bar he told her to wait tables. On average we would go home with 30-40$ a day. And we got checks every 2 weeks for 118$ for 6 days a week only sun off from 4pm to 330-4am. We worked out butts off. Sometimes you get a nice big tip but most nights your lucky to go home with 50$ after being on your feet for 10 hrs+ busting your butt

And when you check out at night and you didn't make money tips that night the system won't even allow you to lower the amount because if your check was $100 and you left a dollar on the messy table with all your trash everywhere that the system wouldn't let me put the dollar in the system because it's going to tax me 15% of my sales. Time to change government. I was a student and still am, I can afford everything you said because my employer responsibility to pay taxes on employees. My taxes come out of my paycheck, no they are not attached to sales. Employer and the company and the tax office figure this out. And in January I go online and I check the employment history and hours and all my paychecks and declare are the right or not. Then usually I get a tax Return because I usually end up paying a little above requirement. All in all takes five minutes, I think it's extremely uncivilised to expect the server to cover 15% of the ticket, I'd rather pay 115, and leave you a proper tip if you're a great server. I do. It expect pot wash and kitchen to get part of tips because they usually earn way more than the front house servers. Fair enough, but as a server myself my 8 hour shift gave me 120 per day, on top of that I have free healthcare, medical care, I get monthly bonuses that range from 500-1500(3 separate performance reviews), and I could afford holidays every 5-6weeks. I don't have inheritance or rich parents or other family to rely on. I moved out when I was 14, made it to college and then Chose restaurant low skill job instead of medic because legally I cannot decline healing a patient, but I can legally not serve a rude customer, while working decent hours. Never more than 36hrs a week. My monthly tax is about 200-250 and it covers all my social welfare needs, when I become unemployed due to lost hours in restaurant or lockdowns or renovation of the site I get paid either by employer or government and I never lose healthcare, social security, free education and I don't have to have a side hustle. I live in Oregon and it’s so hard to find employees, fast food restaurants are paying up to $20 an hour. I recently went through a fast food drive through and was asked if I wanted to leave a tip and when I said no they asked me if I was sure. When we go to a restaurant and see a waitress working 4 to 6 tables in the 45min to a hour and a half that we're there. Our bill is usually around $90. The way it works is that, if the employee didn't make enough tips to meet normal minimum wage, the restaurant has to pay the employee up to that wage. The server will always make at least $7.25/hr, the variable is how much the owner has to pay. The staff can make more than that off of tips, but it runs the risk of owners illegally dipping into the pool for themselves down to the point their staff makes barely minimum wage. It was implemented during the depression to ease the burden on restaurants as a temporary measure, and then the greedy oligarchs made sure it never changed.

Thirdly all my trainings and overtime were paid, every new skill learned gave you a raise. Four - as a manager I NEVER kept tips even if given to me, I placed them in tip jar for staff to split. Lower paid staff should keep tips given for GOOD service and not as a top up for salary. My low skilled low paid job still paid me enough to live independently, to go out to eat, take holidays, go back for masters and save money. In Germany, guests in gastronomy are not even expected to tip the service staff... but many do it anyway, when "cheerful staff" provided good service. Why are the employees (usually) in a good mood? BECAUSE THEY GET A REASONABLE HOURLY PAY! (around € 11 an hour, minimum wage) Fun fact: When customers "misbehave", the staff don't have to put up with it. The history of tipping in the United States is pernicious. It is related to superior/inferior social roles...the servant...NOT the server...and the entitled who are served. ..who may, or may not, choose to acknowledge the service. So the servers would never be getting below minimum wage, but by demanding the customers tip more, the owner is hoping that extra money to make up the difference won't come from his own profits. But there have been plenty of stories about owners taking or denying tips (those that give notice) to servers and I wonder if this is even legal? When I tip a server, it is for their service. That is money intended for them. I've asked servers about tip sharing and everyone I have spoke with seems to like it, so as far as splitting tips, I see it as a choice. But can business owners/ managers legally withhold tip money? Seeing how the pay is so low, I would think not. But this is the US, so I guess I wouldn't be surprised if there was no protection. Would me noting on the tip that it is intended for x (server name) make any difference?
In our country fortunately the tillslip (receipt) shows the waiter's name and the tip amount, and it is usually charged to a card, however, if you think the owner is a POS, you just ask the waiter whether they get their tips, and if they say no, then you give them cash and tell them to hide it. I haven't had a waiter say "no" in about 10 years, so generally the tip is included on the bill and the amount recorded, so potentially the waiter could raise a labour claim.

I am a server/bartender who makes only 2.13hr. Only hosts, bussers, kitchen staff make between 7.25hr ~11hr...that being said servers and bartenders make only 2.13hr plus tips ... I always give 110% above and beyond service and get tipped out that night so no employer is stealing anything .... There have been nights where I only make $17 because people don't believe in the tipping culture; please tip your servers because In the end the money you tip is all we get because 2.13 after taxes isn't s**t ....
I just looked up the menu at the fireside grill. Here's a fun game, lets same what a server can afford with her wages. After 1 hour work, she can have a soft drink another hour for a soup. After another 5 hours, a hamburger steak. Add another hour of work for a side of mushrooms to go with that hamburger steak. Imagine working an entire 8 for one meal at the restaurant she works at...yeah the customers are the stingy ones

For 5 servers it's the difference between 15 and over $100 an hour. I'm not trying to stand by crappy business owners but it's also not their fault the system is in place. Most severs I know make $30+/hr.(granted they only work 5 hour shifts) I've done math on this stuff before and prices would have to go up 10%+ to make the numbers work. So it takes a lot of risk to raise your prices, eliminate tipping, raise your servers wages, make it public that tipping isn't necessary at your establishment, and try to stay competitive with other restaurants serving up similar faire. I agree that tipping is an imperfect process and should be eliminated. It's not as easy as people think. The government needs to make the change. Plenty of servers have returned to work after their great resignation because they still make better money than hourly wage jobs.
Plenty of countries did it. Also if you're expected to tip 20% anyways. Then please by all means raise your food prices by 20%. It will end up beneficial for the servers, and more profits and customers can leave a tip only because of fantastic service they received and not a pity payment for servers to top up. I as a server for decades never considered tips as part of my salary. When I did get tips I was always pleasantly surprised and thanked the customer as it means they enjoyed their stay and I did quality work. But probably because I never had to worry about health insurance, medical care, food or electricity bills. My salary was sufficient to cover my expenses and entertainment and tips well I don't care much for them. Great performance gave me monetary bonuses. When staff is fatigued, tired, afraid of homelessness and hunger then how can they offer you a great efficient friendly service? 3$ doesn't even cover transport to work, hygiene products, night in bed.

It's not the restaurant owner that gets to make up the wages when it comes to tips it's actually up to the state... I was a server for ten years... Also if the servers decide to quit and get another job then that means that the restaurant doesn't have servers.. which means that when you guys go out with your families for special occasions there are no servers there to serve you.

i have worked several years in restaurants in many jobs, busboy,waiter dishwasher,bartender- in very good restaurants. tips means "to insure peomt service". if restaurants paid these workers more wages then then the cost would be passed on to the customer. so a $10 meal would cost $12 to 15. many of you would not be able to eat out as often as you do now.. and servers would have no incentive to please you. no wine reccomendations or food tips on freshness your dining exoerience would be less enjoyable. restaurants that are very busy offer good food and good service. while i support an increase in wages, some staff are liusey workers. if you are stingy, don't expect good service on your next visit.
Tipping 'too little' is only 'insulting' if you've received great service, which I usually do. I find that servers almost always go out of their way to be friendly, prompt and professional and I always tip as generously as I can over and above 20% for those great experiences. It's a tough way to make a living.
I have been a server my entire life and make very good money doing it ..that being said if tipping was stopped and we were paid 15 an hour you would see a lot of servers leave the industry (no experienced server would work for that)…also the cost of your food would while eating out would almost double if raising the server wage to 15 an hour ….listen it’s america it’s 2022 it’s customary to tip…get over it or stay home …and you should at least be leaving 20% at the very least …
As a waitress for 25 years, stop demanding that these employers pay servers more. This is absolutely killing what servers make through tips. They've taken this notion and converted it into a tip pool situation and using their having to pay more hourly to justify splitting tips with everyone in the damn building. I think a lot of people who are saying that the server should have been paid more are forgetting that the concept of tips is also built into how much you pay for your meal. So, you tip because the servers compensation isn't built into the price of your food. If you don't want to have to tip anymore, get ready for the price of your meal to go up by 20%. Yeah, you don't have to tip anymore and the waitresses get a viable salary. But that also means you're going to be paying a lot more for your meal. So really, the customers are the stingy ones here. And everyone who argues otherwise is being intentionally ignorant of how this all works.
First and foremost, I know some people are going to take this comment as defending the restaurant, which is NOT the case. If your business can't pay its employees a living wage and still make enough profit for you to live on yourself, then you shouldn't be in business. That said, in today's Corporate States of America, I DO have sympathy for small business owners that actually try to pay a living wage (unlike this guy). Regardless whether you're a bar/restaurant, a construction company, a plumber, a grocery store, or whatever, you need supplies, and odds are that your supplier is probably a big corporate entity that charges you as much as they can, because heaven forbid they don't make a few BILLION in profits this year. Then, if you rent or lease business space (office or storefront), your landlord takes as much as they can possibly charge. Add in other business expenses, and if you're trying to pay a living wage and still make ends meet yourself, margins can be slim.
If restaurants paid their employees more then food and drink prices would go up by %20 and, most likely, not all of that would go to the employees. People who've never worked in customer service don't understand that we people too and tipping is the culture for a reason. Hear me out, but why only servers? There's plenty of other professions that don't get tipped for their minimum wage jobs. You should get paid more, by your employer. Otherwise if I tip you then you are employed by me if it is to top up your hourly rate. The servers of the coffee place I visit all get minimum 14 an hour, barista makes 21. I tip them always, I tip them not because they need it, but because they are always amazing bunch of people taking care of my order. I'm okay paying more for my drinks and food. 20% menu rise would be beneficial for the company and the staff as now you know you get paid a proper hourly rate for slow days, you are guaranteed living wage even if you serve a table that doesn't tip. But when they do tip that money is extra for your amazing skills as a mixologist and server. And you get to keep tips as a treat instead of splitting between rent and bills. Spare me about others culture and practice the one you are in. The prices in restaurants will go up 10 to 20% if they try to make this change on their own without government changes. They would no longer be competitive with other restaurants. Plus if they eliminated tipping and paid the servers $20/hr and raised the prices, a lot of good servers would leave the industry because they made twice that before. So then the dude that could barely scan your items at target will be responsible for not picking his nose before bringing you your food.

Servers are taxed on 15% of their sales. It doesn’t matter how much they actually make in tips, it is across the board expected that their income is 15% of their total sales.

I don't have a problem tipping the standard %15 (before tax, people! You do not tip on taxes), but I do have a problem with owners like this who feel it's up to the patrons to pay his employees.
Fast food Restaurants have no problem paying min wage and making a profit. I use to serve and bring paid below state min should be outlawed. A tip is just that a thank you for going above and beyond. If you can't make it as a serve type restaurant you need to rethink what you are doing.
I dont necessarily agree with his statement, but a lot of people commenting might not see the bigger picture. There is a lot of things people don't understand about owning a privately-owned restaurant. Between rent, utilities, purchasing the glassware, liquor, food, plates, cutlery, and etc, this list goes on and on. Also paying the kitchen labor a living wage, because most states don't require them to receive tips. The actual money that that owner receives on the bottom line might shock most people. Everyone wants to have multiple choices when going out to eat. Well that comes at a cost.... Tipping. Tipping is the cost. It allows the owners to pay the servers a lower wage and stay afloat. I don't think anyone should have to pay for bad service. But just remember. We are all human and we have our bad days, weeks, even years. The tip should just be included in the charge. Tough truth but some...cultures(PC edit), foreigners and cheap people don't tip. It's wrong. A restaurant can't pay all the servers a "living wage" because they have paper thin profit margins mostly. People who say that they should earn a living wage probably don't know much about the restaurant industry. My parents owned 3 simultaneously back in the 80's and 90's and I was old enough to understand in the later days how close the margins are. Calling the guy out for saying "they pay $3" is also petty and misunderstood. That's extra $35 on a 40 a week goes towards your taxes which are not removed from your check.

YES, tipping culture SUCKS. YES, restaurants need to pair a fair wage instead. But it's a whole-àss system. It's been around for years and years and years. Lashing out at ONE owner of ONE restaurant isn't going to change it. Even that owner themselves couldn't change it. Fireside is a national outfit, which means that owner is a FRANCHISE owner, and still has to do what Fireside corporate says. And even if the owner "dips in", that's not an excuse not to tip. Because those servers RELY on tips to LIVE. So when you stiff your server, it DOESN'T teach anyone a lesson, and it DOESN'T hurt the restaurant-it hurts the SERVER. A LOT. So until things change, no matter how much you may disagree with the idea, ALWAYS TIP YOUR SERVER.

Just to play devil's advocate here. What if you looked at it like this. Tipping encourages servers to give better service. The better the service the more money they make. While if they recieved a liveable hourly wage the incentive to do better would no longer be there because good or bad service they would get paid anyway.

This is disgusting! I'm from the UK and tipping has never been a big thing there because everyone gets paid the living wage and tips are just extra. I have worked as a waitress too in a tiny cafe and the tips at the end of the week was always a shock to me and I never expected it. Pay your staff better and stop relying on customers to pay more than the meal is actually worth! Your gonna lose business as I would go somewhere else if you demanded a tip!
In Washington servers get close to $15 an hour. Often prices are more than in Idaho where servers are usually paid much less. So is a guest a jerk because they choose to pay less in WA?

The restaurant's biggest competitor is the grocery store. Imagine buying a Fettuccine Alfredo for example. Depending on where you go, it could range from $15-$20 at a restaurant. What's in a Fettuccine Alfredo? Well it's a box of Fettuccine which sells for $2, and Alfredo sauce, which sells for $2. A $4 product served at 400-500% more in a restaurant. That price point is what you as a customer would buy at a grocery store. Restaurants get this price for a lot cheaper at a wholesale cost, especially if it's a franchise. So for owners having the audacity to guilt trip customers for not tipping, just think of how much you'd be saving if you did it at home, instead of spending $20 bucks more (not including tip + tax), that could take 10 min to make at home. (On a side note, unless they're a 5 star restaurant, the majority of restaurant food is frozen, processed, and boxed)
As a cheap git, this is why I only order stuff I can't make at home (easily). Still cannot for the life of me understand why someone would pay $20+ for spaghetti and a slice of garlic bread. I will say when I worked in restaurants back in the 80s/90s most of the food was fresh or frozen fresh. No processing other than stuff like deveined shrimp or precut chicken wings. If you eat at a restaurant that is getting everything from a restaurant supplier boxed, frozen and processed you better be in the military or a cafeteria. They did have a place in Gatlinburg TN back few years ago. When Gatlinburg caught on fire back in 2016 the restaurant was burnt down. I had a friend that worked there back in the late 2000s as a waitress and it was awful. She was only getting TN's waitresses min. wage back then which was the $2.17 an hr. During the off season hurt all of the waiters and waitresses. Luckily when the restaurant burnt down they never rebuilt it(at least it wasn't back in 2017 my last time ever in Gatlinburg. I moved out of TN in Aug 2017 and nvr went back). Fyi Sevier Co has the highest sales tax in the state of TN.(in 2017 it was over 15%...Dunno how much it is now)

Most of us work as servers because it has the potential to be very lucrative, sure its not always consistent, but it is actually the highest paying job without using a college degree. I am a 20+ year veteran of the restaurant industry (now retired) and have held every position from dishwasher to owner. What the general public does not realize is that the profit margin of most restaurants is razor-thin. This is because restaurants have a significantly higher overhead than many other types of businesses. You want to do away with tipping culture and pay the servers a living wage? Sure, sounds great. Are you willing to pay $20 for a cheeseburger or $8 for an order of fries? I hope so because that will be the result. Menu prices would have to be raised significantly to cover the increased labor costs and remain profitable and in business. The tipping model is what allows restaurants to keep their menu prices reasonable. Take that away and most independent restaurants would have to shut their doors.

Once you stop this practice then you will really have a harder time getting service and help. It's how things are and although bazaar than we are paying the restaurant's owners salary, as soon as it's ended most career professional service people will bail. If they don't have the potential to make really good money they will have to go do something else.
I think the wage should be raised to a living wage, and not need to rely on tips to make up the difference. (By living wage, I mean not just barely making ends meet, but with room to spare, getting ahead. For example, median rent, or mortgage payment on 15-year fixed with 0 down (including taxes, insurance, HOA, PMI, etc), should be <25% of take-home pay. Also, when I tip, I want it to primarily go to the server I'm tipping (maybe some shared with the cooks too), not split among the entire staff (some of whom may not have been directly involved with my meal.)
Forget asking owners to do this. Make them. Only a few states require servers to be paid the state minimum. $3 is ridiculous but they will do it if it is legal.
I always love the excuse from business owners that they don't even pay themselves anything. Because it's technically correct. They don't receive a regular paycheck. A lot of the times what they do is take what's called an owner's draw from the business account. It's an excuse of lot of small business owners use to try to make themselves as unassuming and faultless as possible. The owner of the company that I work for doesn't get paid a salary either. She also has three large houses, a boat and takes regular vacations overseas. It's a scam.

This sounds like Tostados grill here in Cincinnati. When I worked there I was paid 2.12$ an hr, the owners would work as the bartender and take the tips, we had a girl who had her mixology license and instead of letting her run the bar he told her to wait tables. On average we would go home with 30-40$ a day. And we got checks every 2 weeks for 118$ for 6 days a week only sun off from 4pm to 330-4am. We worked out butts off. Sometimes you get a nice big tip but most nights your lucky to go home with 50$ after being on your feet for 10 hrs+ busting your butt
Also for the non tippers do you realize that I have to pay tax on the money that you didn't tip me? And when you check out at night and you didn't make money tips that night the system won't even allow you to lower the amount because if your check was $100 and you left a dollar on the messy table with all your trash everywhere that the system wouldn't let me put the dollar in the system because it's going to tax me 15% of my sales. You can't change it. So at the end of the year I have to pay taxes out of my pocket. It is a horrible system but it again if you don't tip don't go to a f****** restaurant. Real dumbasses in this world...... Oh wait really funny story,. I was 8 months pregnant and two grown men who had been drinking put their hands on me fighting over the check. Fun times...

So on the bad nights when you get seated with people that you know right away aren't going to tip..... Time to change government. I was a student and still am, I can afford everything you said because my employer responsibility to pay taxes on employees. My taxes come out of my paycheck, no they are not attached to sales. Employer and the company and the tax office figure this out. And in January I go online and I check the employment history and hours and all my paychecks and declare are the right or not. Then usually I get a tax Return because I usually end up paying a little above requirement. All in all takes five minutes, I think it's extremely uncivilised to expect the server to cover 15% of the ticket, I'd rather pay 115, and leave you a proper tip if you're a great server. I do. It expect pot wash and kitchen to get part of tips because they usually earn way more than the front house servers. Imagine getting an bonus from employer on top of living wage for outstanding work, and customers tip you because you're great and not because *I want you to afford hot meal today*

No server wants a “livable wage” that would mean making $15 an hour. So a 4 hour shift would earn them a measly $60. That same 4 hour shift making $3 an hour plus $150-200 in tips is exponentially higher. The tipping system means making well over minimum wage. As long as all customers have functioning brains and leave 20%. The only time the system doesnt work is when ignorant entitled assholes fail to leave a tip. It doesnt matter if you “agree” with it or not. A server making tips earns a very nice living, can live alone, have a decent car, afford nice things. A Target worker making $15/hr cant even afford to move out their parents house. Making $300+ For a few hours work is livable and sustainable. They dont have the “audacity” to pay $3 an hour, cause thats not the pay, the pay is THE TIPS, they can make $100s in a few hours.
Fair enough, but as a server myself my 8 hour shift gave me 120 per day, on top of that I have free healthcare, medical care, I get monthly bonuses that range from 500-1500(3 separate performance reviews), and I could afford holidays every 5-6weeks. I don't have inheritance or rich parents or other family to rely on. I moved out when I was 14, made it to college and then Chose restaurant low skill job instead of medic because legally I cannot decline healing a patient, but I can legally not serve a rude customer, while working decent hours. Never more than 36hrs a week. My monthly tax is about 200-250 and it covers all my social welfare needs, when I become unemployed due to lost hours in restaurant or lockdowns or renovation of the site I get paid either by employer or government and I never lose healthcare, social security, free education and I don't have to have a side hustle. I have paid holidays and sick days, i can take a day off and not have to worry about cover. Manager does

Well, now the restaurant owners might be looking for a livable wage after their restaurant is boycotted for posting this bull$#i+. And they can apologize or remove the post all they want. We've seen their true colors. Too late now.
Tip stands for To Insure Promptness. The idea that its the customers responsibility to pay extra to give servers a "living wage" is absurd. Also, waiting tables is a low skill job that was never intended to provide "living wage". Dont like the low pay? Get some skills and a better paying occupation.

The owners sometimes suck, but can also be caught in the middle. Without the tax treatment, there should never be a mandatory tip. The price should be the price, waiters should be paid as other professions, and tips should be paid where earned by providing excellent service. Know that in many restaurants, staff earn very high cash tips, much of which is never declared on taxes. Once again the IRS, now expanding by more than 87k employees, is the source of the problem.
I live in Oregon and it’s so hard to find employees, fast food restaurants are paying up to $20 an hour. I recently went through a fast food drive through and was asked if I wanted to leave a tip and when I said no they asked me if I was sure. Our Lazerquick has a tip jar, the shoe repair shop has a tip jar and he’s the owner. Tipping is out of control.
I'm not shocked that there's a business out there that only pays their servers $3 an hour...I am aghast that they would post it and make it public as if this totally acceptable.
Tipping is not a law, and going about saying if you don't have enough money to pay tips you shouldn't go out at all is funny to me! As if it's our obligation to pay people money that don't make as much! Want more money get a better paying job.

Load More Replies...My wife and I work hard for a living. She makes $17 per hour, and I make $30 per hour. When we go to a restaurant and see a waitress working 4 to 6 tables in the 45min to a hour and a half that we're there. Our bill is usually around $90. And we're supposed to give someone $18 for maybe 10 minutes worth of work? Who's doing the math here x 4-6 tables. I know for a fact my wife and myself work harder than that.
Since I couldn't write anymore and it cut me off, in the many years of serving my weekly paycheck was never higher than $8. It was all taken out for taxes. In order to get like a $20 paycheck I would have to have worked 35 or more hours... Please tip your servers. And never write on your receipt"get a real job". Also I never understand that people don't tip and you don't want to tip servers so what if all the servers quit and there was no restaurants that you can sit down and serve everywhere I would just have to turn into order the counter sit down and wait for your food. The point of going out to a restaurant is relaxed and have someone do everything for you so why not pay them? If you had a cook at home a personal chef you would pay them right? US and Canada tipping is madness. 15 to 20%? Come on. Look in the Bible. God only asks for 10%. Let's just drop the stupid tipping system and pay them like human beings.
