I have an eReader, which can be lit up so as to read in the dark. Even the intensity of the light is adjustable. That solves a host of problems.
Nothing will ever be as good as holding an actual book.
Load More Replies...Before I got my eReader I used booklights at night. (Also came in handy for my music stand for Midnight Mass). Spouse would sometimes complain about the light if he turned over. That was how I got my first one. A gift from a spouse who wanted to sleep while I read.
This is me. I've rarely had a conversation with a person as good as the ones I have with my books
stay in, snuggle into your pajamas, start reading your favorite book, with a cup of coffee. best night ever.
people doesn't realise that for people who love to read and stay at home spend night partying and drinking it's looser too.
I like both. As long as I knew about the party beforehand.
Load More Replies...i cannot even count how many times i did this, having good imagination is big bonus while reading
The quickest way to escape from life is the first book that comes your way.
Haha, so relatable! Like the world is just switched off once you took a book
I honestly tune out more when reading a book than listening to music
I used to collect books until they started taking over the house. Now I read almost everything on my Nook, and I love it. Now my collection of ebooks is enormous, but they can still be loaded on to a Micro SD card. :)
Um, is there another book called "My Struggle" aside from Hitler's (Mein Kampf)?
That was my thought as well. Someone needs to do better screening.
Load More Replies...This comes across as incredibly insensitive. "My Struggle" is the book written by Hitler (The title in German is Mein Kampf). The fact that the character is thinking they could have bought six volumes of it while eating with a person of color makes it even worse.
I would think so called "book nerds" would not think like that, nor would they support one the worst people in history's ideals.
Load More Replies...I did this a lot at work and at school. Though I've joined the ebook team for that exact reason - much easier to carry around a small, lightweight device than a heavy, thick book.
Also a lot less of, "Jeeze! That is a big book you're reading!"
Load More Replies...i'm not a bookish nerd, but i did this too .. just can't look at misplaced book
Same here Elise. I get this from my Mother, and it won't go away. :0
Load More Replies...There are a few books that have always stuck with me. Once I grew up, I went back and reread them in order to enjoy them again. But I discovered one thing. The way I remembered them growing up was not quite the same as rereading them as an adult. Not a 'positive' or 'negative', but different. If you are going to return to your favorite books, be prepared for this.
Exactly. Same happens with songs and films too. And of course it does. Our life experiences reshape our way of thinking and understanding. That's one of the many beautiful sides of art. It's what makes good masterpieces timeless.
Load More Replies...That happened to me when I read ASOUE when I was 12. I read the whole thing in one week but I never forgot it
When I was 10 years old I read "The Slightly True Story of Cedar B. Hartley" by Martine Murray, it was my summer escape, and I've read it every summer since. I'm now 23 years old. Some things stick with you, some words are too perfect, and some writers capture yourself in ways you never thought they could. I wonder if Martine Murray will ever know how much that book means to me?
On a side note... does anyone know of such a book cause I'd read the c**p out of it.
The last chapter of the last Harry Potter book literally made me feel like my childhood was ending and nothing was ever gonna be as good as the time I spent reading that series (I started in like 11th grade )
Oh gosh me too...I felt this unshakable sense of doom all through those pages...it was so overwhelming ;_;
Load More Replies...😍😍 ah the romance of a book..its hard to let go..after everything we've been through
I remember reading Garth Nix's Abhorsen Trilogy during a rough patch in my life. When I realized I was only a couple chapters away from the end I dreaded finishing the last book. I'm normally a fast reader but I dragged those last pages out for soo long because with everything else going on I just couldn't bear to say goodbye.
Never had this problem. My mom's friends didn't understand why she would buy me books like Dexter or A Song of Ice and Fire, but she thought it was more important that I was reading books and not wasting my time doing other stupid stuff.
Most kids secretly watch horror movies... I secretly read the Hunger Games in 4th grade
I'll never forget the big slap my mother gave me upon discovering i was reading an age inappropriate book. I was 8 and it was a horror book. A decade later I have met the author, and told him about this. He laughed and expressed his hope it wasn't like this anymore. I was proud to tell him I've had all his books by that time!
The movies almost never delivers. They usually leave parts out or twist things that's essential to understanding the characters or to how the ending will unfold.
If you really like it, you can enjoy even the adaptation isn't that great. Just take the good parts, like seeing the characters and locations you always just had to imagine, and ignore whatever you thought was bad. Also remember that the movie will make more people read the book, people who wouldn't read it otherwise.... and the people who don't read it and think it's bad because the movie is bad don't matter, they would never read it anyway.
If I've read the book I refuse to see the movie. I will read the book after seeing the movie, but I have never seen a movie adaptation that I could stomach if I read the book first.
Watched The Mortal Instruments movie and literally raged for 20 minutes to my mom (also a fan of the series)
When I was in hospital with 9 years for a week, I read 10 books! Nobody told me to switch the light off at night... :-)
Haha! That would so be me! Or flashlights! And enough covers that it's not obvious you're reading under there!
Load More Replies...I know this feeling, coz I had to leave my mini library behind when I traveled to another country ;(
I feel your pain. Hated having to let go of really good books that weren't really mine
For some reason I've never been able to mark passages in a book - not because I can't mark a book, but because I always think there might be something more profound somewhere else and I don't want to find I've marked the wrong thing. Yes, I know, I have issues.
How could you even fathom making a single mark on such a precious item 😭
So true. Many people from my class see me as out of ordinary (I like to think I really am unordinary) and thus, worth investigating, so they keep inviting me at parties and so on... First reason I don't go: I have other things to do(especially reading). Second reason? They are morons. You can recognise one by the fact that they don't read books on purpose(for sometimes one barely manages to find a few minutes to spare for a favourite read. I've experienced that. It's depressing.)
People need to read more! Literacy is important! You have no idea how many times I’ve had to explain who Sherlock Holmes is!
Load More Replies...Same! Happened when I was in 5th grade. Mum wasn't happy.
Load More Replies...I've so often been reading in bed until 4 or 5 o' clock in the morning - happens even with books I read the second or third time.
I missed one of the most important announcements at school. I was so engrossed in my book I was even aware for almost 10 minutes the change of atmosphere in my class or my teacher 😭. When I finally became aware, I was being stared at strangely by almost everyone. I was totally obvious to the announcement that President Kennedy had been shot and killed!
This is so true! For me there is also: a new find that your dying to read
Omg yes!! I spend so long in my bookstore just having feels, my boyfriends always like are you going to buy something and I'm just like no... :'(
It's fine to lay them down like that for a moment. What really drives me crazy is when someone curls the page over so that they're only looking at one page at a time!
...then I regret buying my oh so portable, light, friendly, ginormous library-in-my-hand e-reader...there is no more satisfaction after the last page is done :'(
This is a teachable moment that can change a child's life. All reading adults should be prepared for this question and how to encourage a journey of a lifetime.
Because books tell the stories of people we don't know, places we haven't been, and worlds we can only imagine. Plus it improves your vocabulary, communication skills, and for me, just makes me happy.
I had to down vote so that the amount of likes would be 42. I’m sorry
This was the standard i used when buying purses. If they couldn't fit all my normal c**p plus a hard cover book then no bueno.
YESS! Book smell if my favorite smell! ....................................... new book scented candles need to happen
From George Orwell "1984". Everyone should have read it. Sadly, it becomes more and more important in these times.
I still can read to 2 am even though I'm well past my childhood years... and won't even regret it in the morning xd
My mom came in controlling me by feeling the warmth of my bedlamp - busted so many times in my childhood!
Oh my goodness, this nearly made me laugh in class! Thank you for this gem.
my dad did this to me from when i was 3 to when i was 9 i now can never drop a book and have gained the nickname "worm" because im a book worm XD
Sometimes I write down names I see over the shoulder and Google them to find out the title :).
This is where ebooks are an advantage. I like physical books too, but I like more being able to have and carry more titles.
My grandpa's younger sisters often did such 'borrowing'. He even considered hiding his most precious books from them XD
I've never ended a friendship over a lost or damaged book. That being said I have lost a measure of respect for a few good friends who haven't treated my beloved books with enough care. Not to mention that after one strike I never lend you a book again.
Load More Replies...Nah, he's just really comfortable and more tired than he thought. I do that too, at times. Since reading the book is the first break I've given myself in a while, I get tired and comfy and end up falling asleep.
Load More Replies...Caution: don't sit on the stool for long periods of time. It's not healthy for the parts inside your rear. (Not sure how to explain delicately.)
Unfortunately, the ones in the public libraries I vised after growing up never seemed at all happy to be there.
Same, they were always grumpy towards me! Made me want to avoid libraries..
Load More Replies...I don't understand the need to buy all those copies, though. If you have the ebook, you can read it in bed or at lunch. If you have the audiobook, you can also listen to it in bed or at lunch. Why also buy another? If you save on it, you can buy more books.
I just cant do the digital reading. It hurts my eyes and can be difficult to do >.<
Load More Replies...This would be me...my dad saying "did you fall in" still reverberating over Illinois....
I feel a huge sense of accomplishment when I find and correct a typo that got published in a book I'm reading.
Better not use an ereader then! I've never been so bothered by a typo than when reading something on my phone and not being able to correct it. Hahaha
Load More Replies...I absolutely HATE the fact that people write in books. I mean annotating is so stupid. The only thing that comes of it is ruining a perfectly good book. We’re reading “The Pearl” by John Steinbeck, and my teacher said that if I didn’t annotate I would get a 0 for my daily grade. That infuriates me!
Yes, books are to be respected and remain neat and as if they were new, not to be written in. In school and science books you have to write, but I didn't ever like it, either.
Load More Replies...I find it maddening when an otherwise good book is marred by typos. If the book's no good, it STILL bothers me! Clearly, I finish every book I start.
Maybe try again after a while. It could be you're not in the right mood for that book. I feel for the short story book, they're my favorites, but nobody writes them because nearly nobody likes them for some reason.
It takes a lot for me to give up on a book. I'm reading The Goldfinch right now and I don't particularly like it, but I'm probably going to finish it because I've devoted enough time to it that I don't want it to be in vain... I have issues...
Why would you buy without reading the blurbs? You know nothing about the book that way. How can you tell if it's the kind of book you'll like? There's a huge chance of wasting money on something you won't like when you could have bought something else.
Sometimes the blurb doesn't properly explain or the blurb itself is ALL is all the good parts and its a terribly boring book. Big let down.
Load More Replies...I hate when there is no blurb, just a cover with a picture on it with no hope of an inkling as to what I'm about to pick up. I LOVE blurbs! but only if they dont practically tell you half the book and then say ... "what did she do next? read on..."
I don't try to trash my books but if it's so good I take it everywhere and read it until it falls apart I am 100% okay with buying a new copy. I consider that a good investment and well worth putting a few more dollars in the author's pocket.
Load More Replies...I know people say to keep a book perfectly clean and preserved and respected, but I will forever love my dog-eared books, read so many times over so many years and full of notes, curled pages, and worn covers. A book is to be DEVOURED not STARED at delicately. I love worn old books that were too-loved.
I think I should take some leave from work to just... read. It's crazy how busy you get and then all of a sudden you haven't touched a book in a year. I'm crying. I need a good book.
hahaha yeah I love how they call it homework - the book is the TRUE story, the movie is just an idea in comparison. You gotta do your real homework first!
Unless it's a spider...then use whatever is handy...
Load More Replies...My idea of hot, hot, hot: Guy or girl in glasses, wearing a chunky sweater, stretched out on the sofa, reading. HMMMMMMmmmm.... If he's got a scruffy beard or she's a redhead - well, I guess Heaven exists after all :P
OmG person (sorry won’t assume genders) I wear glasses, I’m wearing a scruffy sweater, I’m stretched on a sofa (in my schools library) going to read after I finish homework. But I’m a brunette
Load More Replies...Dog earing as a whole gets on my case. If you do that, then the corner is easier to rip! Just use a bookmark!
And "bookmark" could be anything from a random piece of paper to a leaf, so it's not like they're hard to find.
Load More Replies...I don't see what's so bad about dog earing the pages - it just shows that you loved the book and you treasured it!
That's really weird, since donkey ears are generally very vertical. As far as I know, it's called a "dog-ear" because of the similar appearance to the floppy ears of many domestic dogs.
Load More Replies...On this note I encourage all book lovers to look into Last Line bookmarks, they are amazing!!
Now on my "to read" list! Good job, the Wild Detectives and Laura Pacheco!
On vacation, a book's ending made me so angry I threw it into the hotel pool. Of course I fished it out. I'm not a litterer! THEN I threw it in the trash. It's the worst I've ever treated a book.
That hurt me, too! But, it's now on my "to read" list! Good job, the Wild Detectives and Laura Pacheco
I actually gasped out loud at this. The mistreatment! I would be so mad.
Does anyone else get kind of depressed once they finish a really good book or series? It's like, "What do I do with my life now? " LOL
Yes 100% ... I get way too involved with the characters that I need time to get back to the real life, and I kind of miss the life I was living inside the book 😂😂😂
Load More Replies...I've burned the dinner more than a few times while sitting near the stove so that I wouldn't burn the dinner, while reading a book.
I can relate to nearly all the posts! Reading is an excellent hobby, to many of us even more.
#28 - I love the smell of a new book in the morning - it's the smell of literacy!
When the characters are so real I feel like I will meet them on the street, I re-read books several times just to visit "my friends." I've been doing it since childhood...re-read a favorite novel 25 times in 5th grade!
I'll never forget reading the Redwall books and when I got to the last one I found out Brian Jaques had died. Took me forever to read the book cause I knew I would never read another new one by him again. Broke my heart.
Reading is like my addiction. I just finished my summer holiday and I read a total of twelve books within a week, a total of about 17 books in two weeks. I can read a full novel within a night.
You left one out. Having partially read books scattered across key places in the house.
