Americans have long been exporting their pop culture to the world. With TV shows and movies being among the most consumed global American exports, it's no surprise that US actors and directors are recognized all around the globe. However, for all of us non-Americans out there, sometimes the silver screens get us all dazed and confused. Do American people really drink from those red plastic cups at parties? Do they really wear shoes inside their houses? Is homecoming really such a big thing as movies make it out to be?

But we're gonna need a true expert's opinion on the matter—our Bored Panda readers living in the US! So scroll down below to read all the questions that people had about the things they saw on TV and feel free to share your answers!

We usually have a funeral at the mortuary or a church then we go to the cemetery where the chairs are set up for a few last words by a minister or priest. Only the close family sit and the rest stand.

Eh, I've got to say that most adults don't, at least, not regularly, but a lot of kids do. I don't tend to do it (usually go with coffee, a coke, or sweet iced tea). It's meant to convey "wholesomeness" in movies/tv shows.

I personally think milk is only good when paired with chocolate, or in cereal. My daughter (6) would drink it all day long if we let her, and my mother drinks it like water too. I think it just depends on the person. And I think back in the day it was considered a very healthy thing and was pushed on kids. These days it is still served with school lunches and on many kid menus at restaurants, and it is marketed as good for growing bones, but it is kinda odd for adults to drink it with meals in my opinion.

fuggnuggins
Community Member

In moderation it's good for bones, but it has an acid in it that breaks bone down and can contribute to osteoporosis. If you drink it to regularly. And each person would tolerate it differently. But growing bones I guess would benefit from the breakdown. Bones do so naturally, but there's a range of balance.

My parents made me drink a glass of milk a day, with dinner and I wasn't allowed to leave the table until I finished it. It was because of the calcium. My father would scare me with his description of an old lady he met through his job, who couldn't walk well because "her hip bones, were disintegrating, from not enough calcium". That image will freak a kid out.

Parents try to get their kids to drink milk with their dinners because they are growing and the calcium and vitamn D is good for them. Adults just drink anything. Beer, pop, water, wine, juice.

We grew up too poor to drink milk with a meal. That was an epensive item to us. There were times all we had all day long was a piece of bread with some mayonnaise or ketchup. Us three kids would share one potato on a good day. Now I am grown with kids and grandkids. They can have milk whenever they like. I have strived to make sure my family has it better than I ever did.

Many families with younger children do this in the Netherlands too. Or maybe I have to say, did? Years ago. It could be that kids nowadays just get juice? Unfortunately I don't have children, so I don't know. From what I remember from my childhood, I just had milk or water. We rarely had lemonade or juice with breakfast, lunch or dinner in my family. When we were "old enough", soda was reserved only for the weekends. Not during weekdays. But I don't know how other families handled this. This was at least the case in my childhood.

Carrie de Luka

I don't think there is a 'suppsed to'. Water would be healthier. If you are going with the idea of 'supposed to' it's odd that adult humans drink milk at all - highly unnecessary and not great for digestion. That said I do love milk.
