Instead of showing empathy, these jerk landlords are demanding that people use their savings and stimulus checks to pay rent or even move out during the coronavirus pandemic. A few have even resorted to threats despite tenants losing their jobs, their income, or having nowhere else to go. A staggering 22 million Americans have filed for unemployment this past month and the situation might get worse.

It does depend on a few factors so the rain might not wash off the chalk straight away - but that said I cannot see why on earth anyone would mind even if it took a few showers! It will do it in the end. It's a ridiculous thing to be bothered by. Some children are colouring in the bricks on houses in the UK as a 'support the essential workers/cheer people up' thing. Here in the UK the chalk drawings are being organised on national TV, and anybody who complained would be pilloried since they're mostly in support of the NHS and other key workers.

I got complaints for this when I turned 30, some of my friends had written Happy 30'th Birthday" (with chalk) on the parking lot, where the cars drive, not in the parking spaces. The same day I got complaints from the appartment management because as they said "some people doesn't like that".. Some people are just plain idiots
Lighten up and don't take it personal. This is pretty standard. I work at a school and had my student use chalk to decorate everything. I thought it was beautiful and really creative. The school was really upset and had it immediately hosed down. Was I offended? No! We had fun and it was the school "owners" choice to maintain a look. Were the kids offended? No because I the adult modeled the correct behavior - don't take it personal and move on.

Chalk drawing on the tar is not vandelism. It washes off with this natural magical stuff called water!! Any douche bag landlord should know that!!
I understand both sides. However, management is right on this one. The tenant could have asked management where it would be appropriate to draw on the property, or it could have been done on public property (i.e. sidewalk or park). Someone owns that property and has the right to dictate what can and can't be done there. Would you let some random kids draw in the driveway of the house you owned, or on your door because they were bored? Communication goes a long way. This could have been avoided by just asking.
Because of it being placed on that fence and because of them saying "units", I don't think they're saying chalk can't be used anywhere. To me it looks like some kind of locked common area or pool that is only intended to be used by tenants. I'm pretty sure they're just saying they don't want them using it in that specific area, not the private property they live in.
Probably some entitled person needing something to rag about... I just had a woman in CVS call me an A-Hole and a Fagg_t because I wasn't standing where SHE wanted me to stand. Mind you, I was 6 feet between her and the guy in front of me and wearing a mask as required by PA edict as well as CVS's. I just wasn't "on the line." She had her mask around her neck and not covering her face. Some people just suck. Nice to meet you KAREN!
Well, I have mixed feelings. If your children don't know the difference between private and common areas they might be in need of some education. Also if as a father you just suffer when you see them deprived from the experience of painting in a common wall, sure you will find no trouble in cleaning yourself after them.

If prior to the "stay at home" there was no chalk on the sidewalk allowed, why do people think it is okay now? The owner knows how things go, allow the little kids to do chalk drawings etc on the sidewalk and soon you will have older kids or adults drawing obscene things or using spray paint to do the same. Now is not the time to act like you can now break the rules just because you are staying home.

This might also be happening inside the property/house, so I can kind of see why they did this.
The hell with this... the people who complained had every right to do it... if the kids want to draw with chalk they can do it in their own homes, they have no right to draw in the walls of the common areas... unless the parents don't want their own walls drawn in chalk, in which case they're a bunch of hypocrites... and if it's "so easy to clean" the parents should clean it right after they finish playing outside... I'm sick and tired of stupid parents thinking that their kids can do whatever the hell they want just because they're kids... And if someone is going to criticize my comment, do it with a REASONABLE ARGUMENT... otherwise you're just part of the problem...
Okay I can kinda of see this, if and only if, the entire sidewalk was covered and was heavy. I wouldn't want to walk on that and track it into my apartment. Plus If I did and accidentally touched it, it could cause problems for me (I'm allergic to chalk)

Apparently Landlords Aren’t Above The Law

While, rent increases are truly our least favorite part of this business, various voter and state/city approved measures and bills have increased the cost of housing. Some of those include the following:
-Clean Energy Sales Tax on consumers
-City of Portland Annual $60 per Apartment Registration Tax on renters
-Additional Administration Burden of City of Portland Screening Criteria Mandate
-Additional Administration Burden of City of Portland Security Deposit Mandate
-SB 608- Statewide Rent Control capping the amount and frequency to adjust income regardless of actual expenses
Considering these initiatives and examining your current rental rate, we have made the difficult decision to increase your rent and pass on the cost. We urge you to ask our elected officials to put an end to raising the cost of housing during an unprecedented housing crisis.
um, THAT IS ILLEGAL. As far as I know, it is illegal raise rent just like this. It needs to be in advance and specify date from which it is needed to pay the raised rent otherwise it is illegal and you have no obligation to heed notice like this.
However, is there going to be a new dynamic between landlords and tenants after the pandemic is over and things go back to normal? Josh thinks so.

Evictions are on hold in the UK - landlords are not allowed to do it. I have a landlord I work for doing some odd things and I keep having to quote the new laws to her. Tenants are allowed to stay in situ for the time being on a rolling monthly contract. Even house buyers have been told to stay put unless there really is no alternative.

Dear Tenants,
This property is under tenant access ONLY. If you continue to have guests come onto this property, you will be given a notice to vacate. No guests are permitted to hang out, stay or wonder the property. The only access being permitted will be tenants on file in the office. ALL OTHER GUESTS MUST LEAVE IMMEDIATELY.
Another note: If you think that you don't have to pay rent, because of the pandemic, you are mistaken. We still must pay the bills to keep your apartment over your head. Anyone receiving disability or social security have no excuse to fail short on paying their rent. However, some of you believe we cannot file eviction for nonpayment of rent. This is not true. President Donald Trump has ONLY delayed housing evictions and foreclosures due to nonpayment for HUD housing and Section 8. As you are aware, we do not operate with HUD or Section 8, so you must pay your rent.
To the tenants that have been affected by the virus, please keep watch In the laundry room for postings for jobs and or assistance for rent.
If You would like to discuss with us how any of this, or the spread of the virus is our fault, please come see us in the office.
Laundry room will be closed if it is not kept clean. You must wear gloves and a mask if you want to be in the laundry facilities. If it is not kept clean, it will also shut down. Please keep track of your times to allow every tenant a vacant slot to do laundry.
If you can not abide by these rules set forth, you may want to vacate the apartment, now. We are here for the safety and well-being of all of our residents on this property and we are slowing the spread of the virus by limiting access and implementing new rules.

If not received in full by the 8th I will be filing rent and possession papers in the Circuit Court. Some of these landlords are very heavy fisted. While I understand they are running a business amd also have expenses to pay, I am sure they will get leeway from their credirors, and they will not pass those benefit onto tenants. Very few people and companies have and extra 3 months salary in their accounts for situations like these. Paying for luxuries before paying your rent is not a bright move.
These landlords are indeed nasty people, but one the first rules my parents thought me was to have at least 3 months of salary on your saving account. If you can't afford to save money in your current house, please rent/buy something more modest. My first apartment was also in a shady part of town ('upcoming neighbourhood' as my estate agent would call it), but it left me with some financial air. Living from paycheck to payckeck is incredibly risky, if any crisis emerges (like now).

We once rented out a property we owned. We assumed we'd hit a patch where the house would be empty for at least 3 months (between tenants, economic glitch, etc.). So we set aside part of the rent into the "cushion" fund, against times when this stuff happens.... And we're just two shmucks. So I think these corporations are either bloody bad at business or stupid, and some of the individuals? Didn't read Landlording 101: Don't rent it to someone else if you can't afford it yourself, b/c at some point, the property will be empty, and you will have to pay.... *headdesk*...... Also, what jobs and other places are people going to FIND?!?!

After healthcare and workers right, rent law should be the third reasons for american people to be on the streets (once it is possible again). How can any half-developed country have such ridiculous laws? In the end, this unsafety is not only bad for the tenants but for the landlords as well. When I lost my job no one helped me with my mortgage payments, I didn't get any stimulus package from the government, I didn't get any mortgage discounts, no one bailed me out in any way. I sucked it up, acted Iike an adult, cut all my expenses to the max, lived on way way less, and still paid my mortgage same as always.

Landlords who raise prices or threaten eviction are huge idiots. Never mind that it's illegal and abominable to do those things. They might THINK they are winning now, but eventually the pandemic will be over (and I know this isn't meaningful compensation if you are going through this right now), but the people will remember, and when they have their power back (to take these things to court, or move out and stop giving money to these monsters) the awful Scrooge's will suffer in the long run.
All of these landlords are a**holes, but I also have an opinion on the other side of the coin. A lot of families in my area rent a portion/floor of their houses because it is practically impossible to pay bills alone as a single family. They are dependent on the partial income. If the tenants are unable to pay the rent, it puts the homeowners at risk. It isn't a problem for a month or two (if you have savings), but imagine this lengths out over time? A lot of people see landowners/homeowners as a**holes, but let's be honest, these are people, too, that have to pay their mortgages and taxes every month. Some may not want to charge their tenants because they're genuine people, but sometimes they don't have a choice. Rent was a way to help them pay the bills because their income wasn't enough. If the government wants to allow people to avoid paying for rent for a specific amount of time without being evicted, they need to have something in place for landlords/owners, homeowners, etc.

Today in our news it was reported of people looting deliveries of care packages, and of government officials hoarding them, and selling them on. Don't get me wrong- we have a good president, but some of the population are below repulsive. Stealing food from the poor is the lowest of the low.
Load More Replies... I know I'm going to catch a lot of grief for this, but I have to say it. If you have an income the landlord should be paid. Most people would be willing to enter an agreement where you pay them back over a couple of months. Talking it out with the landlord helps. But not if you think your wine, tv or party is more important than your rent. Our landlord gave us two options. (We have been living in our apartment for 13 yrs, always pay on time and in full, which probably helps our situation). They gave us 10% off for March, which is when the lockdown started, even though almost everyone was supposed to still get most of their salaries, missing only 4 days of work. They gave us a 15% discount for April, because we paid on time. The other option, that was given to all the tenants, including those that have been living here less than 3 months, is to pay a minimum of R1000, and add R500 to your rent in the following months to make up for the rent missed. And our landlord is actually a stingy bastard.
There are two sides to this coin. Renters and landlords. Both deserve protection, both are capable of great injustice and no doubt both have bills to pay. People need to negotiate a happy medium here.
Man am I glad we were finally able to purchase a home last year. Being a renter is so hard and 99% of landlords are just absolute scum

Lot of generalizations happening here. My family heavily depends on the rent we charge because we are still paying property taxes, maintaining the small number of houses we manage, etc. We're not wealthy. "Landlords" are not evil by nature. We want, with all our hearts, to exempt the few tenants we have from paying rent - that means taking it in the pocket ourselves, instead of them. This is affecting all of us.

I saw a lot of "that's illegal" comments. The problem is, unless your rental contract explicitly spells out some of this, a lot of what is happening is, in fact, legal due to loopholes. Slumlords, as I like to call them, put vague verbiage into rental agreements they know the tenants won't fully read or won't fully understand, and many renters sign the lease expecting to be treated fairly.
This is much more relevant than professional artists and influencers making "spontaneous" art for money or millions of reddit wannabes waiting entire weeks for the right angle with their cats.
The most our landlords did was freeze rental amounts for lease renewals. Which is why we're moving out and into a new place. I'm also moving because we live near a golf course and I'm tired of finding dents on my car because the local golf course doesn't want to install nets to protect neighboring properties.

I don't know about landlord business', but my parents own the house we live in and rent the upstairs because our income wouldn't be able to handle the monthly bills. A lot of families do this in my area. God forbid the tenants upstairs stop paying (Even though they all have their jobs and can still pay rent, by the state of emergency laws they do not have to pay rent during this time even with a salary) my family will literally be struggling for months on end. We didn't rent for profit, we rented to pay off our mortgage, water, gas, etc. which is most definitely not frozen.

Sounds like my landlord. I flat out told her today that I am unemployed because of the pandemic, have received NO money (no unemployment or stimulus) and am doing freelance work to desperately try to catch up. That I am eating only the minimum to keep me alive and am having to go without medication I desperately need because I am making paying these jerks my only priority. And she didn't even care - she literally doesn't care if I die so long as she gets her money, which they don't even need because they have thousands of tenants. What kind of person just continues to harass you for money even once you've told them you are sacrificing your medication to pay them what you already have???? I just paid the April rent 10 days ago and emptied out my bank account. She yelled at me today for not being able to make another payment today. Listen, you VULTURE, I just gave you all my money 10 days ago. THE MONEY IS SIMPLY NOT HERE - unless you think it grows on trees or something? She was so rude and nasty and acted like I'm just some deadbeat who will never pay them rather than even bothering to acknowledge the situation we are in right now. I work in a restaurant, and they haven't opened up yet. People like this are trash. And what's funny is she went on and on about how gracious and understanding they've been because they didn't charge late fees in April and May. Sorry, no. You don't get a medal for not being a COMPLETE vulture. Plus I don't think they were even legally allowed to charge late fees, so they don't get to take credit for that. As soon as I have moved on to another apartment, I am going to blast the hell out of these people all over the internet and make it so that everyone knows what they are truly made of.
This is all a result of the rampant speculation that has taken place in urban areas around the world over the the last 40 years. They bought way more properties sold at higher costs than they could afford and are working on very thin margins. If the tenants default or go on strike (as is already happening) they won't be able to pay their ridiculously over-stretched loans and will give the keys to the banks. The main difference is that they can file for bankruptcy protection* while their tenants get nothing. (don't worry, the executives still get their golden parachutes and generous bonuses) This is in large part what happened in 2008. It's a row of paper dominoes in a hurricane.
Whilst most of these people are a*sholes, as someone who has leased their property to others I can understand some of the frustration from the landlords. I had my flat left in the most disgusting state by people that I knew. Had someone stop paying for 3 months because he lost his job, gave him the benefit of the doubt because he said how much he loved it and was had more work then he just left. I've been left out of pocket, with huge bills to cover, black listed address due to non payment of bills, damages to the property and then some. All this with all the contracts in place, did everything 'right'. It's not something I would ever do again. People do not respect other people's properties, the pandemic doesn't change that fact.
Never have I been so glad to have a secure roof over my head with no threat of eviction etc, I feel so so bad for those in these situations. More needs to be done globally to help those with nasty/ uncaring landlords
We have a pretty serious problem coming down the line: there are currently protections against eviction, but even if your apartment or landlord is "nice" and puts up a payment plan, many folks will have to still provide back rent without any additional income (and no substantial assistance). We're going to have a hugr surge of eviction this summer, which has all sorts of dreadful downstream consequences for everyone.

They are upset because I am home all day and not at work. It seems this is a huge invasion of their privacy and a drain on their resources ( heat , water etc) Not gonna lie I am seriously worried I may be evicted. At 55 and a min wage worker finding another unit will be tough. Their attitude towards me has changed drastically. I went from being treated with respect and kindness to being treated like a welfare bum.

Dear renters - your landlord has to pay a mortgage on the property. If you don't pay your rent, the bank will foreclose on the property. The "evil landlord" also has to pay taxes, insurance, home owners association dues, and in some cases - utilities. All of those things are paid for by your rent check - the tiny it that is left over, is what the landlord makes as a profit. Taking care of the property is his job, and the money he makes is his salary. If you think it is wrong to pay rent, then you should buy your own home... and see what happens if you fail to pay the taxes or mortgage. PS - for the posters that think landlords get "leeway" on their obligations - you are wrong. Banks want their mortgage payments, and cities want their tax money - period.

Aside from now utterly nasty (and sometimes incoherent) some of these letters are, there is a core of truth. I'm not a landlord, and I don't want to give the impression that I'm a "landlord sympathizer" but there is a bigger picture to see here. The landlords that don't actively seek payment and let the property go to hell aren't doing the tenants any favors. What do we expect them to do when people don't pay? Also, I wonder how bad things are getting for so many of these letters to be so horrible and lack even basic courtesy.
I mean, while I don't agree with the tone a lot of these places are taking, it is kind of unfair to the businesses to lose the money too. As pointed out by several of them, their expenses continue on uninterrupted. I don't think they should be being arsehats to people, and the ones that are jacking up prices are just vile. But I kind of empathize with both sides here. It's a bad situation all around.

Some of these landlords are very heavy fisted. While I understand they are running a business amd also have expenses to pay, I am sure they will get leeway from their credirors, and they will not pass those benefit onto tenants. Very few people and companies have and extra 3 months salary in their accounts for situations like these. Paying for luxuries before paying your rent is not a bright move.
These landlords are indeed nasty people, but one the first rules my parents thought me was to have at least 3 months of salary on your saving account. If you can't afford to save money in your current house, please rent/buy something more modest. My first apartment was also in a shady part of town ('upcoming neighbourhood' as my estate agent would call it), but it left me with some financial air. Living from paycheck to payckeck is incredibly risky, if any crisis emerges (like now).

So we set aside part of the rent into the "cushion" fund, against times when this stuff happens.... And we're just two shmucks. So I think these corporations are either bloody bad at business or stupid, and some of the individuals? When I lost my job no one helped me with my mortgage payments, I didn't get any stimulus package from the government, I didn't get any mortgage discounts, no one bailed me out in any way. I sucked it up, acted Iike an adult, cut all my expenses to the max, lived on way way less, and still paid my mortgage same as always.

A lot of families in my area rent a portion/floor of their houses because it is practically impossible to pay bills alone as a single family. They are dependent on the partial income. If the tenants are unable to pay the rent, it puts the homeowners at risk. It isn't a problem for a month or two (if you have savings), but imagine this lengths out over time? A lot of people see landowners/homeowners as a**holes, but let's be honest, these are people, too, that have to pay their mortgages and taxes every month. Some may not want to charge their tenants because they're genuine people, but sometimes they don't have a choice. Rent was a way to help them pay the bills because their income wasn't enough. If the government wants to allow people to avoid paying for rent for a specific amount of time without being evicted, they need to have something in place for landlords/owners, homeowners, etc.

Load More Replies... I know I'm going to catch a lot of grief for this, but I have to say it. If you have an income the landlord should be paid. Most people would be willing to enter an agreement where you pay them back over a couple of months. Talking it out with the landlord helps. But not if you think your wine, tv or party is more important than your rent. Our landlord gave us two options. (We have been living in our apartment for 13 yrs, always pay on time and in full, which probably helps our situation). They gave us 10% off for March, which is when the lockdown started, even though almost everyone was supposed to still get most of their salaries, missing only 4 days of work. They gave us a 15% discount for April, because we paid on time. The other option, that was given to all the tenants, including those that have been living here less than 3 months, is to pay a minimum of R1000, and add R500 to your rent in the following months to make up for the rent missed. And our landlord is actually a stingy bastard.
There are two sides to this coin. Renters and landlords. Both deserve protection, both are capable of great injustice and no doubt both have bills to pay. People need to negotiate a happy medium here.

Lot of generalizations happening here. My family heavily depends on the rent we charge because we are still paying property taxes, maintaining the small number of houses we manage, etc. We're not wealthy. "Landlords" are not evil by nature. We want, with all our hearts, to exempt the few tenants we have from paying rent - that means taking it in the pocket ourselves, instead of them. The problem is, unless your rental contract explicitly spells out some of this, a lot of what is happening is, in fact, legal due to loopholes. Slumlords, as I like to call them, put vague verbiage into rental agreements they know the tenants won't fully read or won't fully understand, and many renters sign the lease expecting to be treated fairly.
This is much more relevant than professional artists and influencers making "spontaneous" art for money or millions of reddit wannabes waiting entire weeks for the right angle with their cats.
The most our landlords did was freeze rental amounts for lease renewals. Which is why we're moving out and into a new place. I'm also moving because we live near a golf course and I'm tired of finding dents on my car because the local golf course doesn't want to install nets to protect neighboring properties.

I don't know about landlord business', but my parents own the house we live in and rent the upstairs because our income wouldn't be able to handle the monthly bills. A lot of families do this in my area. God forbid the tenants upstairs stop paying (Even though they all have their jobs and can still pay rent, by the state of emergency laws they do not have to pay rent during this time even with a salary) my family will literally be struggling for months on end. We didn't rent for profit, we rented to pay off our mortgage, water, gas, etc. which is most definitely not frozen.

Sounds like my landlord. I flat out told her today that I am unemployed because of the pandemic, have received NO money (no unemployment or stimulus) and am doing freelance work to desperately try to catch up. That I am eating only the minimum to keep me alive and am having to go without medication I desperately need because I am making paying these jerks my only priority. And she didn't even care - she literally doesn't care if I die so long as she gets her money, which they don't even need because they have thousands of tenants. What kind of person just continues to harass you for money even once you've told them you are sacrificing your medication to pay them what you already have???? I just paid the April rent 10 days ago and emptied out my bank account. She yelled at me today for not being able to make another payment today. Listen, you VULTURE, I just gave you all my money 10 days ago. THE MONEY IS SIMPLY NOT HERE - unless you think it grows on trees or something? She was so rude and nasty and acted like I'm just some deadbeat who will never pay them rather than even bothering to acknowledge the situation we are in right now. And what's funny is she went on and on about how gracious and understanding they've been because they didn't charge late fees in April and May. Sorry, no. This is all a result of the rampant speculation that has taken place in urban areas around the world over the the last 40 years. They bought way more properties sold at higher costs than they could afford and are working on very thin margins. If the tenants default or go on strike (as is already happening) they won't be able to pay their ridiculously over-stretched loans and will give the keys to the banks. The main difference is that they can file for bankruptcy protection* while their tenants get nothing. (don't worry, the executives still get their golden parachutes and generous bonuses) This is in large part what happened in 2008. It's a row of paper dominoes in a hurricane.
Whilst most of these people are a*sholes, as someone who has leased their property to others I can understand some of the frustration from the landlords. I had my flat left in the most disgusting state by people that I knew. Had someone stop paying for 3 months because he lost his job, gave him the benefit of the doubt because he said how much he loved it and was had more work then he just left. I've been left out of pocket, with huge bills to cover, black listed address due to non payment of bills, damages to the property and then some. All this with all the contracts in place, did everything 'right'. It's not something I would ever do again. People do not respect other people's properties, the pandemic doesn't change that fact.

We have a pretty serious problem coming down the line: there are currently protections against eviction, but even if your apartment or landlord is "nice" and puts up a payment plan, many folks will have to still provide back rent without any additional income (and no substantial assistance). We're going to have a hugr surge of eviction this summer, which has all sorts of dreadful downstream consequences for everyone.
