I Became Obsessed With Making Pastry During Lockdown, Here Are My 15 Very Extra Pies
I started making pies as a way to deal with the boredom of our first Covid lockdown in March.
I’m a mum of two boys and work part-time in graphic design. In the first lockdown we had in Auckland, New Zealand, I started to make pies as a way of relieving the boredom, fulfilling my creativity, and also getting dinner on the table!
My pies are mostly inspired by my family, my moods, and internet culture. They are a mix of social commentary and sweet delights. I work on each pie for over 3 days in my spare time and it takes my family about 5 minutes to eat!!

The Homer Pie
The Homer pie was made as an apology to my husband. I was a bit grumpy one night in lockdown and bit his head off. He backed out of the room like the meme of Homer backing into the hedge. It made me laugh, so I made a pie about it.
Rasberry Pie With A Sweet Basil Dragon
Beef And Barly Pie-llenium Falcon
The Pie-llenium Falcon came about one night when I asked my 11-year-old what he thought would make a cool pie. He said the Millennium Falcon—challenge accepted, son!
The Owl And The Pussy Cat
I came up with The Owl and The Pussy Cat pie when I was playing around with sliced apples and they looked a bit like the sea. I was in a romantic mood that day….

Blobfish Cake-Pie
What type of birthday cake do you make your 13-year-old son who already thinks you’re a bit extra? Well, you go full-on crazy town and make him a blobfish cake-pie, of course!
There really should be a blobfish emoji!
Load More Replies...this one reminds me of my boss. do you mind if i make one of these for his birthday?
That is so funny! I would love you to make one, send me a photo @devoneybakes Just dont get fired over it!!
Load More Replies...My son dressed as a blobfish for Halloween when he was 10. People either got it and thought it was brilliant or really did not understand!

"Letting the days go pie" is another music-inspired bake. It felt appropriate to the Covid situation and one of my favorite Talking Heads songs. As with the "Let's dance, Grum-pie Cat," I love Bowie—and internet memes, so I made a pie about that too.
Octo-Pie
Octo-pie was made because octopuses are total badasses and the overlords of the under(sea) world.
The FBGM Pie
The FBGM pie is another internet-inspired pie. I love the juxtaposition between the periodic table and hip-hop culture: only on the internet can you find such things. If you translate all those elements into their symbols it comes out as: (F)fluorine (U)uranium (C)carbon (K)potassium (Bi)bismuth (Tc)technetium (He)helium (S)sulfur (Ge)germanium (Tm)thulium (O)oxygen (Ne)neon (Y)yttrium—a Junior Mafia song sung by Notorious B.I.G.

Load More Replies...This is very talented and imaginative. If you don't do this as a business then maybe you should start to. You would make a killing in this!!
How..how do you cook them so evenly!? Holy Smokes-all are beautifully done.
Hey Devoney if you can do this with pastry then how about doing them with clay? they would make good ornaments.
Clay is cool, something to think about. I do like the temporary nature of pies though. Kind of like sand castles or bubbles....
Load More Replies...I promise eating them is the best part!
Load More Replies...Thanks Flare, I'm thinking about ways to start a business, but treading slowly...
Load More Replies...These are the most awesome pies ever!! Not only intricate and visually beautiful, but really intelligent! I LOVE the FBGM pie - is that a thing?? So cool!
