I Traveled Across 45 Different National Parks In Victoria, And Here Are My Favorite Pictures
As a weekend photographer and keen explorer of our natural spaces, I set myself a photo project of capturing every land-based national park in my home state of Victoria, located in the south-east corner of Australia. Capturing all 45 of them took two years of regular trips, outside work, and other travels.
Many of these parks are within three hours' drive of Melbourne and, as you can see, comprise a wide range of environments from snow, beach, desert, and rainforest to dry eucalyptus bushland. If you're planning a trip to Australia, I hope you'll consider looking up a few of these locations—but if you're not, hopefully, you'll be inspired to take up a similar photo project in your home area.
Here's a quick glimpse of every Victorian national park—sometimes a wide vista, sometimes the native residents or just the small details. Each location has its unique charm…
And now that it's "complete"? I'll keep going back to get the best light, the best season, those fleeting moments with wildlife... Alpine
The peak of Mt Feathertop (1922m) lies to the right. The 11km (each way) walk along 'The Razorback' is a popular one.
Point Nepean
The Lakes
An Eastern Grey kangaroo takes in the morning sun.
Lake Eildon
This farmland was intentailly flooded for a dam decades ago, only to be revealed again after extended drought.
Hattah-Kulkyne
The lakes here are an amazing site for bird watching – from waterbirds to mallee fowl and various raptors.
Baw Baw

One of the few areas of native white cypress pine.
Wilsons Promontory

A red-necked wallaby sits back for a rest in the sun, thawing after a 0C Winter morning.
Great Otway
Barmah
River red gums like this can be several hundred years old.
Churchill
Another Melbourne gem and a great place to see kangaroos at dusk.
Kara Kara
An old worker's hut under moonlight, with some red highlights from the campfire. Formerly called Saint Arnaud Range NP.
French Island
A great place for quiet beaches and koala spotting!
Lower Glenelg
Grass trees in Spring flower. Some are straight, some like to 'squirm'!
Mount Buffalo
Two climbers on Ozymandias (grade 22 M4). This is Australia's most popular aid climbing route. Some people take 4 days for the 280m ascent.
Kinglake

Budj Bim
A volcanic crater lake, with much indigenous history. Formerly known as Mount Eccles NP.
Dandenong Ranges
A great place for a stroll on a hot Summer's day, being 5-10C cooler than Melbourne. Easy public transport access too.
Snowy River
The river from the poem and the film, though the film didn't show this river!
Croajingolong

Gunbower
This is a road! Seasonal flooding of the Murray River creates some painterly reflections.
Murray-Sunset
The remains of a wooden ramp used during salt mining. The pink colour is an algae. You may notice some stars too – this is a moonlit shot...
