Everyone should be entitled to affordable food, healthcare, and homes. In short—everyone who works deserves to make ends meet without working themselves to death. That’s the main idea behind the r/WorkReform subreddit, a community of over half a million people who fight for a good quality of life for everyone and anyone who sells their labor.

Scroll down to check out some of the most powerful posts featured on r/WorkReform. Bored Panda got in touch with the moderator team at r/WorkReform who went into detail about the subreddit's history and mission. We also wanted to learn how to negotiate a good salary and work conditions, so we reached out to financial expert Sam Dogen, the founder of Financial Samurai and the author of ‘Buy This, Not That: How to Spend Your Way to Wealth and Freedom.’

This should be higher up. How many times I have read the bs story of how higher wages will make a burger unaffordable (USA)... even some here on BP have said that.

It's not the cost of hamburgers. It's the idea that people working in fastfood would earn a livable wage just like a plumber, builder or electrician that frightens the shït out of some Americans. Because being concerned about what someone else earns is one of Americas greatest pastimes.

But then with those "benefits", you can't pay upper management X hundred times the salary the ground staff get. That's "socialist" and unacceptable for the land of the "free-market".

The two most shocking f*****g mind-boggling stats about America is that 40% of their gigantic homeless population actually work, many with more than two jobs. Some mind -numbing 45,000,000 Americans live in abject poverty. Nearly the population of an average sized European country. How has this been done? In the TV series 'Deadwood' the evil tycoon Hearst said before he had the local newspaperman murdered "Im getting one of these (newspapers) to spread my own lies".

I hate that completely rubbish food is ever used as the benchmark for anything. But yes, the point is, paying a living wage has nothing to do with the price of a burger. It has to do with massive, obscene profits of the people at the top of the pyramid, because unbridled capitalism is all that CEOS/boards are interested in.

On average they do get about 10 days vacation, but they are not required by law to have any vacation days.. companies how ever can do their own contracts that include vacation days. Quick googling shows that counties that do not have required annual leave are: United States, Tonga, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau. Every one else seems to have vacation and public holidays.

Sorry, Americans. You have been lied to. Countries that have universal healthcare and supported education don’t implode. They actually do better. Sometimes people say it’s “free”, of course that’s wrong, it’s paid in taxes. But how is that different to paying insurance?

Ah, yes, the famous Big Mac Index, recognized by economists of all types as a very poor reflection of economic realities. But, I'll play along... Entire book chapters can and have been written about this, but let's put it into a few of tiny, tiny nutshells. This is a reflection of a strong dollar. We WANT to be at the top of the index, it's a sign of economic health. Right now, only Norway and Switzerland are above us on the index, so we need to do better. U.S. only went higher than Denmark on the Index in 2017. So, you must think U.S. was better than Denmark before 2017. Who's at the bottom of the index? Venezuela. $0.66 for a Big Mac. Why, it must be an economic paradise there! As others have said, many, many things are factored into the cost of a Big Mac, and labor is just one thing. If McDonalds started paying $60.00/hr, would you expect the price to drop to Venezuela levels? Oversimplified factoids shouldn't be the basis for serious arguments.

How much money goes to tax in US? And for social security/health etc? Like in the Netherlands depending on your pay (and how much money you own) it's 40 or 50 percent. So for every 100 dollar earned, netto is like 60 or 50 dollar.

To clarify. Maternity leave, pension and health care are not provided by McDonald's of Denmark. They're provided by Denmark. $22 per hour is awesome, but Danes pay about 55% income tax, so take home is about $9.90.

Because it’s just not this simple . I am not opposed to living wages for “unskilled workers” if it can be done , please don’t think I’m saying that. But there are just more factors than this .. Denmark doesn’t have to pay The same kind of benefits that America does ( free healthcare free education etc) Denmark is a hell of a lot smaller than America is and doesn’t have to pay the same kind of transportation costs to get supplies , taxes aren’t the same , etc etc I actually don’t know for sure if these reasons apply to this exact scenario but you can’t make blanket statements like this of comparisons without recognizing the vast differences between America and Denmark . Maybe Denmark can produce cow meat year round quite close to their buildings and don’t have to pay the gas and labour etc to transport it across a huge country , maybe Denmark skips a middle man somewhere that America can’t resulting in the difference etc etc I do know in Canada which I think would be a..

More similar country to compare our rates don’t compare to Denmark either and every time our minimum wage goes up inflation sky rockets . Produce goes up, fast food prices go up etc. etc .. we have raised our minimum wage significantly in the last four to five years but because eveyrhing else went up it just made it pointless and in turn killed the middle income people . My wage never increased at the same rate so I am now working a job I went to college for that is paying me barely above minimum wage and I can’t afford my grocery bill anymore .. I would need to be making about nine dollars more an hour to be making the equivalent of what I was making in 2016 .. equivalent, that’s not even giving me a raise in six years

"WorkReform began as an offshoot of another popular Reddit community examining labor issues. WorkReform is now part of an activist group of subreddits, including r/NewDealAmerica and r/SandersForPresident. NDA and SFP are more political. WorkReform is focused on improving living conditions for all working-class people," the r/WorkReform mods explained to Bored Panda.

They shared that the entire team is "100% all-volunteer" and take up the job because they believe in their cause. "Our primary moderation goal is to keep the working class community cohesive and supportive of each other. 'Divide and conquer' is the primary way workforces have been oppressed throughout history. When divisive efforts are kept in check, the community self-organizes to an amazing degree," they explained.

I hate to upvote such dire statistics, but the point this BP makes is the point all others need to really understand. We can’t can’t ever change or improve a problem if we don’t truly “get” what the problem itself is made of.

According to the mods, workers "do their best bargaining" when they're part of a united block. "This is why the richest people in the world spend so much effort on stopping unions. The billionaires understand that all value is created by human labor. They know organized labor is unstoppable. This is why you see Amazon attacking union organizers by having them falsely arrested," they explained why there's a lot of anti-union sentiment in some of the larger multinational corporations.

"Organize with your fellow workers - together you are powerful!" they said. As for why employers don't want to see their workers earn fair wages and have good work conditions, it all comes down to "a culture of increasing short-term profitability at all costs."

The r/WorkReform movement is all about fairness and giving people of all wages access to the necessities of life. The group’s moderators shared a list of their beliefs, and odds are that you can get behind the majority (if not most) of them.

“People should not be worked to death. People should be paid a living wage for their labor. Income inequality and power inequality are the primary causes of social strife and lower living standards,” they write.

What’s more, the r/WorkReform mods believe that “workers must join together” to fight for what is “rightfully theirs.” They also urge workers not to be divided and conquered. “Workers gain the most when they focus on unifying issues,” they say.

Among the subreddit’s goals are: fighting for better compensation, getting better worker representation in the workforce (that includes unions and more), getting better and fewer working hours. What’s more, they aim to support political campaigns that “put workers first.”

Then, you should move on to evaluating your own performance. You also have to take a look at how your colleagues are performing. Do your best to try and objectively pinpoint where you are results-wise relative to other workers. If you’re consistently overperforming, you should draw attention to that.

Education here in Sweden is (usually) free and you can take a loan from the state without any interest (except for inflation) so you don't have to work while you're studying. Also, if you can't find a job after you finish your education you can postpone paying back your loan for a maximum of five years. Yes, we pay more in taxes, but this helps the whole society in the end.

Finally, you should keep in mind how long you’ve worked at the company. Ironically, employees who have worked longer don’t necessarily get better conditions or wages.

“The longer you are at the company, ironically, the less you get paid compared to the market. Therefore, you need to consistently speak up for yourself each year as new employees join with higher and higher pay packages,” Sam said. You can read some of his tips on how to get paid and promoted faster right over here.

Failing implies attempt at the opposite, and because there hasn’t been any, I’d say ”failed” is not the correct F-word for that last sentence.

So, dear Pandas, which of these r/WorkReform posts got you thinking the most? What do you personally think is stopping employers from giving all of their employees a fair wage for their labor and giving them access to decent working conditions? What do you think it would take to eradicate poverty and exploitation? Share any thoughts that you might have in the comments.

Energy companies should be government regulated to avoid this. It sounds a bit radical but having your people (voters and tax payers) freeze to death because of corporate greed is terrible.

For a year I've spent 200$ a week on groceries and since January I've been getting roughly 2lbs less of everything for the same amount of money. Thank god it's only three of us and we grow a lot of our own food in the summer. Vegetables fruit and fish have really gone up. Even the crappy junk food. My daughter and I make our own oat milk now bc it sells out so quick too

Exactly what happened here in Australia in NSW. The justification for hammering down the well overdue pay rise from the politicians "if we give it to them the rest will want one and we can't have that happening". Why not? Every time the civil serpents in Canberra get a pay rise the politicians give themselves one too and vice versa. Major rises above inflation with NO productivity or condition reduction offsets. Usually annually if not more often. Yeah "selfish crazy unions" indeed

Why limit the fun to one generation? Have Baby Boomers apply for jobs. Have Gen X play 6 straight hours of fortnite. Have Millennials dig their own backyard pools. Have Gen Z send a fax and use dial-up internet. It'd be a great way to see how things have changed....and it would be hilarious to watch people of all ages struggle, flounder or surprisingly succeed.

Had a former employer lay me off at the beginning of the Pandemic because I didn't get along with her click of buddies that worked in the student learning center (was a tutor.) The person she kept that tutored my area found out and quit. I had graduated by then and found a wonderful job in a national firm. She called me to ask me to come back...I laughed and told her...that would be a big time "nope." I feel bad for the students though.

I once saw a post on here about a company owner that said he was having a hard time keeping staff because of the high turn around even though he's a great boss and chalked it up to lazy workers. The guy running the lecture said "Then you aren't a great boss. Great bosses ask their employees why they won't stay and make changes to ensure happy employees. If you are experiencing high turn around, it tells me you aren't giving a reason for your employees to stay and that they would rather go work elsewhere. You are the problem..not them."

So he submitted the first part of his plan to build a detached garage...built his small home and has "never gotten around" to building the main house. Cost for building....$14,000.

They get put in that position for that exact reason. You can climb the ladder very fast if you're able to fire a man for leaving early because he needs to drive his wife to chemo or to fire a woman because her pregnancy meant that she wouldn't be able to complete a project before the deadline.

But (controversial opinion here), if you create an environment where they don't feel the need to unionise could be achieved by giving them benefits, pay rises, the tools to do their job well, not penalising them for taking a day off sick, encouraging them to take their vacation days. No need to unionise if you're already giving them more than the bare minimum. Right?
