Unless you are a committed contrarian, most of us prefer to generally agree with the majority opinion. After all, it's not really worth waging war over a commonly held belief, particularly if that debate is happening online. But sometimes folks do need to vent a little.

This online group is dedicated to sharing opinions that generally go against the grain and we have gathered some of the best posts. From disagreements on simple food items to entire societal movements, people drop their hottest takes. So get comfortable as you scroll through, upvote the posts you agree with, and share your own thoughts in the comments section.

Outside of this list, you have most likely encountered the idea of a “hot take.” This is simply an opinion, view, or idea (the “take”) that is quite controversial (the “hot” part.) What you might not have known is that this term comes from sports radio, of all places. Originally, the idea was to promote some listener engagement through good, old-fashioned rage baiting,

The strategy would be for the radio hosts to choose "a topic from the sports zeitgeist, often one that has no business being discussed because the answer is unknowable" and then make"loud, fact-free declarations," so fans, who might not have the best self-control, would call in and do their best to “correct” them

The person is not wrong - studies have shown that bathing/showering too often actually just moves the bacteria on your skin around.

Now this term has easily extended to the social media age, although the strategy is quite similar. People will be incorrect or inflammatory on purpose, relying on others quickly jumping into the comments section to “correct” them or share the post to mock it. Unfortunately, in the social media age, most attention is good attention, as the algorithm just sees clicks, comments, and reposts, not the negativity.

Anger & hate gets more clicks and the social media referrer algorithms are focused on raising ad revenue. Governments needs to take control of the referrer algorithms. Or ban advertising, which would be my preference.

The government loves social media. They can control and manipulate remotely for far less money. No you can't legislatie everything. It has to be done by us, individually. There is absolutely zero chance governments will ban social media or advertising. Nor should they. Government is already overreaching. Only way this will change is of we collectively stop using social media

The awfulness has become much more mainstream and pervasive though. I blame the commercialization of the net.

There's a lot of truth in this. I completely abandoned a forum I had formerly enjoyed when I realized I was getting upset over comments from people I didn't know, and would never meet.

All of the monetized content on Instagram makes me want to puke. I purposefully and obnoxiously use Instagram like the elder millenial that I am. As in, bighead/tiny body selfies, #TBT, etc...😂No polished, professional-grade lighting selfies for me, no thank you.

Not sure I agree that it's destroying everything of value, but it's blurred the distinction between 'the truth', 'my truth' and nonsense, and also between properly researched, original work and rehashed 'content'. For example, you see the same photos and memes appearing here time and again, in a different list or with a different text.

Ban advertising on social media. Don’t show likes. Stop forcing algorithms to show preferred videos. That’ll curve a lot of these issues.

Social media creates echo chambers designed to keep you angry, depressed and in desperate need of whatever advertisers and content creators want from you, namely your attention and money. Worse, most people LIKE living that way. It makes them feel validated and important. We have meet the enemy and they are us.

I feel the same. I was working in and with the internet from the very beginning and I was so full of hopes and wonderful possibilities about it. I never thought it would degrade so much. The question is, how can we change the use? How can we strengthen the good sides? I am clueless, unfortunately.

It just depends where you are online. Some online communities are incredibly supportive and constructive. I do find some parts of the internet put what to me is too much energy into reacting to negative things - I see a bit of that on YouTube and Twitter. But there's a place for criticism, particularly if it's speaking truth to power. We all can choose what we do and don't engage with and notice the ways it impacts us.

Online dating has destroyed dating, but as far as careers go, l disagree. It largely depends on who you work for, just like when you do it offline.

Socrates said books would do the same thing you are saying social media is doing. It is just a different way of spreading information, the people behind the information are the ones spreading and creating the content not the platform they are using to share the information and content. You just being old fart don't understand of like the content, it's okay here in another ten years something will come out that these kids won't like and they cycle can continue so it's okay nothing is changing friend, everything is just as it always has been.

Old fart here. You aren't giving enough thought to the social harm that pernicious repetition of being told you're not good enough does to the human psyche. This isn't a Gen Z vs Gen X thing. If a parent tells their kid they aren't pretty, rich, smart, or talented enough every day for years we call that abuse. We tolerate it from our phones. Paid creators manipulate us into thinking they are smart and beautiful and successful and we come away thinking we are wrong because we aren't. Then we like and subscribe and keep on coming back for more. Social media isn't a book. It's advertising. There are good uses for it too, but some is very harmful.

Bad grammar and poor spelling always makes someone seem not very intelligent. I think it's because people don't seem to read much anymore. I'm talking about people who have English as a first language here.

Where does this person live? Here in Mzansi (South Africa) it's sunny 95% of the time. I get depressed when it's winter and too dark. We need the sun for our mental health.

Depends on circumstance. Yielding during heavy traffic so someone can go ahead in the perpendicular/opposite direction is completely acceptable.

Honestly, a LOT of public places need to calm down with music. I understand having some soft background music so it's not dead quiet/fun for the people who are working, but I do not need radio blasting in my ears when looking at bread in the supermarket

Also... kids get sick. So do adults. How are adults in a corporate culture going to stand up for their rights and take time off when sick (sorry, idk if getting PAID sick days is a usual thing in the US, but you should still not have to work when you're spreading lurgy) if you don't learn to do it as a kid?

Met my wife at work 12 years ago. It happens to millions of people, it's just the way it goes. They'll do what they can to prevent it, but as long as work is integrated between the sexes it will surely happen forever and that's just fine with me.

I have a good friend who's been participating in kickboxing since he was like 13 and hits the gym on a regular basis. Most buff guy I know, but still far away from Arnold Schwarzenegger or anyone like that. Peak physical condition doesn't look the way the movies make it seem.
