For me, maps are the perfect fusion of art, information, insight, and entertainment. They help us navigate both physically and in the realm of ideas. What separates a good map and a great one is that the latter doesn’t stop with just mapping the territory: it expands the borders of our imagination.

There’s hardly a better place to see original, unusual, and interesting maps than this subreddit right here. Though we can’t mention the name (thanks, internet police!), it’s a veritable treasure chamber for cartographers, amateur and professional alike! Having celebrated its 10th birthday this spring, the online group now boasts more than 1.6 million members, pulling in thousands of new ones on a steady basis. Content is king and these redditors, including the founder, land surveyor Patrick McGranaghan, make some truly marvelous maps.

Featured here you’ll find some of the freshest and greatest new maps. Pack your bags, put on your safari hats, and let’s go on an adventure, Pandas! Just remember to upvote the maps that you enjoyed the most, the ones that taught you something new, and the ones that gave you a fresh perspective on the world.

Patrick, the founder of the subreddit, revealed to Bored Panda what makes a good mapmaker and whether we all need to be tip-top artists. A lot depends on the purpose of the map itself, however, the main goal is to make it as informative and easy to understand as possible. Art skills? Not as important. (Though certainly a plus!)

"There are many different reasons one chooses to make a map. Sometimes for navigation, sometimes for showing statistical phenomena, and sometimes for fantasy. While artistic skill helps, it is not absolutely necessary. The important thing is to make it easy for users to glean useful information. Most maps should have a thesis or a story it is going to tell and this needs to be told through the map," he said.

Hungry for more magnificent maps? Then you’ll want to have a scroll through Bored Panda’s previous articles about map-lovers and their creations here: [Unrolls 5 parchments with ancient symbols and drawings] Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, and Part 5.

I was curious to find out what personal projects Patrick has been working on recently. "Lately, I've been learning Blender. It is more of a 3-D animation program used by video game developers, but I believe that there are ways to use it to display maps," he spoke about the innovative way of using the program.

"You might have seen some beautiful maps by Sean Conway and Scott Reinhard showing old maps with digital elevation terrain underneath. These are often made in Blender. Blender has a great ability to show light and shadow patterns that are almost photo-realistic. I think there are ways to use this program beyond showing maps with realistic terrain. I'm still a novice now, but I'd like to explore other ways this program can visualize maps," Patrick spoke about his ongoing adventure to learn Blender. If you Pandas haven't already, you really ought to take a look at Sean and Scott's work as well.

The Soviets sent in their troops to quash Baltic independence movements only 2 years later. And to think that Gorbachev was given the Nobel Peace Prize. I realize he did a lot of good overall, but at the time the hypocrisy blew my 17 year old mind. Good riddance to the USSR!

Growing up in Soviet Union, we were taught that Soviet army is, like, protectors and peace makers of the world. To see them bashing protesters with rifle butts, on TV, shook my 13 year old self pretty hard. By the way, they were not locally stationed troops. They were Alpha Group, flown in by orders from Gorby the Butcher. It's the same notorious Alpha Group that was more deadly to civilian hostages than to armed insurgents, in every crisis they had ever participated.

The founder also told Bored Panda about the current state of the subreddit and how Reddit as a whole has changed recently. Changes in tech are also driving changes in content. "The subreddit is doing well. Reddit overall over the last few years has shifted towards mobile-friendly content. Reddit used to be only for desktop users. In the early days, the content was mostly large files that were wallpaper-sized. They were great for zooming in and exploring in detail."

However, these days are long gone. Nowadays, "Reddit is overwhelmed" with users who only use it on their smartphones and other mobile devices. "For better or worse, that is how it is and that's the trend for the future. The subreddit contains a lot of bite-size Instagram-style statistical maps. The community upvotes this content and if that's what they want, that's the direction the sub will take."

I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Yeah, earthquakes are awful, but other places have forest fires or frequent shootings or have to live in gated communities to feel safe, etc. Bad earthquakes are infrequent and we build to survive them. Christchurch was a bad one because they'd never really had big ones there so weren't all built for it - and one building was responsible for 62% of the deaths in that one.

I wonder if this is just playing with numbers, because I live in some of that green and I'm definitely not the only one. Firstly, there's technically a big difference between one square kilometre and one kilometre square. One square kilometre is a thousand square metres, so technically that's a square that is about 31.62 metres a side. The land my house is on is over 8,000 square metres, so by the rules of this map my wife and I don't exist. Actually, that would explain a lot. Edit - the agreed definition of a square kilometre seems to 1 km per side, so I stand corrected there. That said, I still live in one of the green bits.

There's actually a LOT of continental material below sea level... much of it much closer to the surface than most of Zealandia... much of that in the Atlantic Ocean, named for Atlantis. The Bahamas are spread over an area the size of a major European nation, separated by water only a few meters deep. There are huge banks that are too shallow for navigation by huge vessels and that are also the size of nations.

We are mostly submerged, but technically meet all requirements for being a continent. We were part of gondwanaland, it's all about technicalities. Patrick, the founder of the subreddit, was kind enough to go into detail about the online group, map-making, and his passion for maps on a number of occasions.

“I've noticed, especially as I've gotten older, that you only have so much time on this planet and every day that is wasted is a day that you'll never get back. If you want to get out and explore the world you just have to do it,” Patrick previously told Bored Panda about seizing the day and starting your adventure today, instead of putting these things off indefinitely.

“Some adventures will cost time and resources, but the real question I ask myself is can I afford not to do some goal I have my heart set on. There are so many opportunities in this world that it may be hard to choose, but if you wait too long those opportunities will be gone forever," Patrick said that we have to seize opportunities to live (really live) as they come.

Under Section 40 of the Criminal Code: "Everyone who is in possession of a dwelling house is justified in using as much force as necessary, to prevent any person from forcibly breaking into or entering the dwelling house without lawful authority." It appears that if you use deadly force, you are likely to have charges brought against you, though those charges are very likely to be dropped.

I live in South Africa, this is false, you can't use a gun to protect property, only persons. BUT, gay marriage is legal and so is growing marijuana and if all works out with the cops, etc, they can buy a rifle. So it should read, legally married gay people who legally grow plants can legally buy rifles.

Recently Patrick had been working on pixel maps that are bound to get the attention of anyone who’s got a penchant for video games, retro items, or pixel art. "This spring, I was making a lot of pixel maps that looked like old video game graphics. I picked some exotic places like Botswana and Mongolia to make these maps," he revealed a bit about his projects.

"I think a great way to learn about an exotic place is to make a map of it and really give some hours and care into making the map look as good as possible. You really get a connection for a place as you're putting labels on and making decisions about what to include and where to lay everything out,” the founder told Bored Panda.

According to Patrick, moderating the subreddit is all about keeping a delicate balance and staying realistic: the fact is that you can’t keep everyone happy all the time. Nor should you try to when questions of quality are involved. “Moderating is always a delicate balance. It is impossible to please everybody. If you are too laissez-faire you get a lot of low effort and ugly submissions and the users complain,” he said.

True....that's why we alao see flight paths curved in the same way as the boundary of the yellow and blue regions because that is the shortest path. Well that is not exactly true because flight routes are charted in a way that airports are in the proximity for emergency landing, but you get the point.

Which part of Earth is closer to London or Paris doesn't really matter. The fact that matters nowadays, is that Pars (France) has overseas and dependent territories almost everywhere, in every Ocean in the world: - Pacific - French Polynesia, New Caledonia, Wallis and Futuna, Clipperton Island; - Indian Ocean (Southern part) - Mayotte, Reunuion, French Southern and Antarctic Lands; Crozet Islands, Kerguelen Islands, - Atlantic Ocean (Caribbean) - French Guiana, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Saint Martin, Saint Barthelemy; North Atlantic - Saint Pierre and Miquelon; No other single country these days has such number all around the world territories. Fun fact is Norway has it's own island in the South Atlantic Ocean in the Subantarctic region - Bouvet Island, or Bouvetøya.

I've never heard of Pol as a name in Russian, except spelling latin Paul in the cyrillic alphabet (like Paul McCartney). So doesn' count either

The pieces of land so reclaimed are called polders. There's a saying, "God created the world, but the Dutch made the Netherlands." Much of the Netherlands lies below sea level - hence the name - and they keep the water out with dikes and water pumps. In fact, many of the iconic Dutch windmills were not mills but actually wind-powered drainage pumps.

The grey square is Kosovo, a partially recognized independent country that Serbia claims as part of its territory. It's ethnically around 96% Albanian Kosovar Muslims, hence the desire for independence from the majority Serbian nation of Serbia, where they feel underrepresented and ignored at best, and discriminated against at worst.

Eastern Europe has high rates of heart disease while Western Europe has very low rates. Butter, especially grassfed butter, is very good for you! The higher rates in the east are caused by high rates of smoking and obesity, and lower income of both the people and counties. Also Eastern Europeans are more likely to use vegetable and seed oils (ie canola, margarine, etc.) which were touted as healthy for *decades* but newer research shows are actually driving our health into the ground. Animal based fats like butter and tallow are actually very good for you. 2 years ago I had high cholesterol. I switched from canola and margarine to Olive and avocado oils and grassfed butter and my cholesterol has gone down significantly.

Some people are naturally more skilled at navigation and using maps than others. Though, of course, navigation is a skill and you can get better at it so long as you’re patient, dedicated, and spend enough time honing it. “The older I get, the more I realize that spatial awareness just comes naturally to some people, and for others, it's a struggle," Patrick said. “In a way, reliance on Google Maps has made us dumber. We let the navigation app do all the work for us and don't engage with making the decisions.”

i heard that the two land masses were once joined and the Mediterranean sea was a low level lake. Then water started flowing into the med creating a massive waterfall that that was 8 miles wide, eventually forming what we have today.

This strait is what keeps the Mediterranean full. As the volume of water in the rivers that empty into the Med is less than the volume of water that evaporates every day. It's thanks to the Atlantic that it doesn't dry up.

Just raising the water level on existing topography doesn't account for the weight of the water, which will actually push the topography down even farther. This can happen for two reasons. First, coastal areas are often made of highly compressible sedimentary debris. The second, the extra weight can actually cause the underlying tectonic plate to bow downward a bit. Unfortunately, this lowering of the land is often not depicted on maps of projected sea level rise. Probably because it's very difficult to predict, and also perhaps because it's not a very well understood phenomenon. In the same way, areas now covered by glaciers will start to see uplift as those areas start to melt.

Culture plays a part in this too - we Slavs put a lot of value on family and several generations living together is more common (though not always very peaceful).

Yeah, my gran says more than three generations living in a house together is a recipe for trouble. My dad's parents solved this by building a three-story house with a separate apartment on each floor - one for each family unit. So everyone has their own space, but they are close enough to help each other out.

I love how people say that it's a cultural phenomenon for young people to live with their parents, but I can testify as a former resident of one of the red countries that in 98% this is not the case. The wages are so low that it is just not economically viable to rent, unless you are a young family (2 incomes), and even then you struggle with the winter electricity bills. Everyone yearns to have a place of their own, a car and spare income for entertainment, travel and new clothes. No one wants to share a flat with the previous generation long-term. But when you get your salary you realize that once you cover your basic expenses you are left with practically nothing. Which is why a ton of young people either move abroad and work what is close to slave labor in order to save money to buy a small flat back home, or end up in crippling debt for 30+ years.

We evolved to live in a close knit group. Women literally live past their reproductive years (menopause). That's because grandma's provided an evolutionary advantage, by caring for and teaching the children while mom and dad were out hunting and gathering. We are not built to be alone, think about the pandemic of depression and loneliness over the past year and a half. Right now all the responsibility of meeting house, caring for children, cooking falls on moms (statistically). We evolved to live in groups, to share the work and fun of being alive and together. So in a way those countries who are considered poor, likely have deep bonds with the people around them. It's also been proven that having deep bonds with many people is good for health and longevity. https://www.sciencenews.org/article/grandmothers-survival-evolution

The country with the lowest is San Marino, with 6 per 100,000. They only have 2 people in prison, but their national population is also only 33,600. Citrus is the group of sour/sweet, rindy fruits that include grapefruit, oranges, etc. Citrons are a sour, oval-shaped citrus fruit with a lumpy rind. Lemons and limes are hybrids between citrons and another citrus fruit. I think lemons are citron + bitter orange.

Chinese pollution is largely caused by the western world, though. Most plastic production, deforestation, and greenhouse emissions are "exported" from China, Brazil, and India - that is, that the products created by destroying the environment there are ordered from and sent to western nations. The manufacturing of things may be done there, but the demand is coming from North America and Europe. Our Life In Data has a whole series of interesting maps on the importation/exportation of environmental damage.

They should do animal noises in different languages. They can be so funny. A cockerel in English goes c**k-a-doodle-doo, but goes riki-tiki-ti in another one, which I can't remember for certain (Portuguese or Slovak? I've lived in a few countries).

As for the idea that ‘everything has been mapped,’ Patrick thinks it’s a bunch of baloney. “The world is constantly changing and accurate spatial data is a fleeting thing. Google Maps certainly gives the impression that everything is mapped, but there is selection and generalization in their data," he said that there will always be a need for new, fresh, updated maps.

Not Indian, but lived in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand & Delhi as a kid, and two years in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka & Kerala as a young adult. I’ve always heard of India referred to as “India” by locals, when speaking nationally. I was confused as a kid what Hindustan was as I only heard it on abstract context. I was oblivious to Bharat as a child and rarely heard it used as an adult.

Fast food is also very common in the Mediterranean countries. Eating white breat pastries with cheese/meat is common (e.g. Pastizzi), also pasta is basically bread, and its not great for you, no matter how much olive oil you slather on to it. Seafood is awesome, but the lower income population can't really afford the good stuff. So you still end up with people surviving on processed meats with pasta and bottled or canned sauces. I believe the Mediterranean diet should have been the Mediterranean lifestyle, which less and less people keep.

What would be the point of that? I assume people who don't wash don't want to take the time, or have no access to water. Adding soap to the mix doesn't really change anything, does it? Of course I could be wrong with my assumptions.

What a horrible colors to represent opposites.. red and dark red. Also, red is seen as negative, while in this case criticizing China is definitely positive. And the colors of the words seem to correspond to the colors in the map, but they don't. They're exactly the wrong way around. Bad, bad, BAD graph.

It should be illegal for all cannabis to be illegal. It's a plant. It's natural. No one has ever overdosed on weed. Unlike heroin, meth, opioids, etc that are man made and cause some seriously bad stuff. Weed is natural. Weed is natural. Alcohol and cigarettes are legal and those can do far worse to your body.

It's sad that this plant that helps people/makes them have a good time, was suddenly made illegal (Class 1 narcotic along with heroin and meth) because people talked s**t about Nixon, and since he couldn't arrest them for free speech, he made marijuana illegal. Wanna guess what groups were targeted through this law? The hippies against Vietnam and The Black Panthers. F*****g Nixon.

This map isn't correct. In the Netherlands it is still illegal to use, grow, transport, sell or deliver cannabis/marijuana. It is tolerated for private use, but that doesn't mean that the police can't confiscate your weed during a traffic stop or when your neighbors complain that your 5 plants in your garden are stinking too much.

In many states in the U.S., prisoners can't vote. However, prisoners do count as residents for census purposes, which impacts congressional seats and funding. Inmates are also frequently shipped to states far away from their home state for prison. This means, states who want more political power are incentived to build prisons, imprison people, and keep people imprisoned for longer to have more funding coming in and more political sway. It's a really, really awful idea that continues completely legally in the U.S.

    PeachPossum

4 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

I recollect reading an article on this very topic. Zillow did an analysis of buyer's income vs home sales in California. Rising cost of housing in California, esp San Francisco, has forced upper class into middle class homes, middle class into lower class, and the lower class are pushed onto the streets. California has built only half of the projected hundreds of thousands of new affordable housing complexes. With recent job losses, exising affordable housing have no vacancies. And you are right: these poor folks haven't anywhere to go. Some are lucky enough to still have their cars. Criminalization of homelessness is not the solution. They take prison spots that ought to be reserved for true criminals. Then again, I also read that if you see a homeless woman, the question is not has she been raped, but how many times has she been raped. The perpetrators are often themselves homeless.

Blue states on average have higher homeless, have higher levels of inequality, but higher "average earnings" due to averaging everyones earnings together. A lot of this is connected to shoddy policies, especially in urban areas.

Those homes are privately owned by either a homeowner or a lending institution, both looking to sell. The vacant homes may also be tied up in legal disputes between homeowners and lending institutions. Their homeowner's insurance policies do not allow the homes to be let out as rentals or allow unknown, unvetted persons to live there. In addition, the homes would likely have to be rezoned. California would best fulfill its promise to build more affordable housing for them.

California, New York, Massachusetts, DC, Oregon, Hawaii and Washington have been utterly dominated by Democrats. They are also where almost all of the nation's homeless live. Heavily restrictive building policies create an artificial scarcity of housing, which in turn creates liberals, which in turn create heavily restrictive building policies. I'll cut some slack for Hawaii.

Maryland and New Jersey are also in the top 10 most liberal states. Their rates don't fit your theory. I'd argue that the states you've mentioned are less likely to criminalize homelessness. Throwing homeless people in prison doesn't actually fix anything, though it does impact the numbers for reports like this.

True, but on the other hand - think of the whole mess with exchange rates. And when you need to change currency in a hurry, you'd often end up in some shady shop where they'll rip you off ;)

Ummmm...no. Not even close.. Most people in the US are not descended from anyone who took land or slaughtered people. My family, like many others, came by boat from Europe in the early 1960s. They worked hard, saved their money, and purchased what we had fair and square. They had nothing whatsoever to do with what came before. Please educate yourself before asserting such blatantly false ideology. BTW - sounds like you kinda hate your fellow Americans, and by your own admission, we're all immigrants, so who's the hypocrite here?

Yes, we absolutely do need a visa. Filling out an ESTA is applying for an exemption for the visa rule. The fact that 99 % of applicants get approved isn't the important part.

This is a little bit misleading. Travelling from Ireland, for example, does not require a visa for stays under 90 days but does for longer periods. A visa waiver is required for short stays.

I was using hyperbole in this case, asshole. I know not everyone in America is a descendant of the people I described. Hell, I'm Irish, Welsh, English, German and Native American, so I get your point, HOWEVER, that outrage was a bit excessive imo. Should I have generalized? No, I shouldn't have. Did you have to be a d**k about it? No you didn't. Now we both look stupid. And sometimes I do dislike some Americans, but that's because I grew up in the south where casual racism/sexism/misogyny/bigotry, etc. is seen sometimes. I get angry about people who use a religion to be hateful to those they don't like. There are a helluva lot of amazing Americans, and Southern Americans as well. Your outrage over my comment was unnecessary. Just saying.

Actually, only you looked like a d**k and some 'woke' liberal who feels the need to spout false information to make yourself look 'holier than thou.' You literally said everyone, but then backtracked. Nobody alive today took over america, and shouldn't have to be guilty for the sins of their forefathers
