35 Informative And Unusual Maps That Might Change Your Perspective On Things, As Shared On This Online Group (New Pics)
InterviewFor me, maps are the perfect fusion of art, information, insight, and entertainment. They help us navigate both physically and in the realm of ideas. What separates a good map and a great one is that the latter doesn’t stop with just mapping the territory: it expands the borders of our imagination.
There’s hardly a better place to see original, unusual, and interesting maps than this subreddit right here. Though we can’t mention the name (thanks, internet police!), it’s a veritable treasure chamber for cartographers, amateur and professional alike! Having celebrated its 10th birthday this spring, the online group now boasts more than 1.6 million members, pulling in thousands of new ones on a steady basis. Content is king and these redditors, including the founder, land surveyor Patrick McGranaghan, make some truly marvelous maps.
Featured here you’ll find some of the freshest and greatest new maps. Pack your bags, put on your safari hats, and let’s go on an adventure, Pandas! Just remember to upvote the maps that you enjoyed the most, the ones that taught you something new, and the ones that gave you a fresh perspective on the world.
Patrick, the founder of the subreddit, revealed to Bored Panda what makes a good mapmaker and whether we all need to be tip-top artists. A lot depends on the purpose of the map itself, however, the main goal is to make it as informative and easy to understand as possible. Art skills? Not as important. (Though certainly a plus!)
"There are many different reasons one chooses to make a map. Sometimes for navigation, sometimes for showing statistical phenomena, and sometimes for fantasy. While artistic skill helps, it is not absolutely necessary. The important thing is to make it easy for users to glean useful information. Most maps should have a thesis or a story it is going to tell and this needs to be told through the map," he said.
Hungry for more magnificent maps? Then you’ll want to have a scroll through Bored Panda’s previous articles about map-lovers and their creations here: [Unrolls 5 parchments with ancient symbols and drawings] Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, and Part 5.

The Journey Of An Arctic Fox Who Walked From Norway To Canada In 2018

Load More Replies...Huh... It's not something I've ever thought about, but it's actually interesting that an animal can potentially walk from cape town south Africa to the Diego Ramírez Islands in Chile
So long as it can survive burning deserts, humid jungles and freezing icepacks!

Load More Replies...I was curious to find out what personal projects Patrick has been working on recently. "Lately, I've been learning Blender. It is more of a 3-D animation program used by video game developers, but I believe that there are ways to use it to display maps," he spoke about the innovative way of using the program.
"You might have seen some beautiful maps by Sean Conway and Scott Reinhard showing old maps with digital elevation terrain underneath. These are often made in Blender. Blender has a great ability to show light and shadow patterns that are almost photo-realistic. I think there are ways to use this program beyond showing maps with realistic terrain. I'm still a novice now, but I'd like to explore other ways this program can visualize maps," Patrick spoke about his ongoing adventure to learn Blender. If you Pandas haven't already, you really ought to take a look at Sean and Scott's work as well.
The Baltic Way. On 23 August 1989, Two Million People Joined Their Hands To Form A Human Chain Spanning 675.5 Km Across The Three Baltic States. The Protest Was Against The Soviet Occupation, And To Support The Independence Movements Of The Three States
The Soviets sent in their troops to quash Baltic independence movements only 2 years later. And to think that Gorbachev was given the Nobel Peace Prize. I realize he did a lot of good overall, but at the time the hypocrisy blew my 17 year old mind. Good riddance to the USSR!
Growing up in Soviet Union, we were taught that Soviet army is, like, protectors and peace makers of the world. To see them bashing protesters with rifle butts, on TV, shook my 13 year old self pretty hard. By the way, they were not locally stationed troops. They were Alpha Group, flown in by orders from Gorby the Butcher. It's the same notorious Alpha Group that was more deadly to civilian hostages than to armed insurgents, in every crisis they had ever participated.
Load More Replies...That's really cool, but all I can think about right now is giving the first one in the human chain an electric shock.

The founder also told Bored Panda about the current state of the subreddit and how Reddit as a whole has changed recently. Changes in tech are also driving changes in content. "The subreddit is doing well. Reddit overall over the last few years has shifted towards mobile-friendly content. Reddit used to be only for desktop users. In the early days, the content was mostly large files that were wallpaper-sized. They were great for zooming in and exploring in detail."
However, these days are long gone. Nowadays, "Reddit is overwhelmed" with users who only use it on their smartphones and other mobile devices. "For better or worse, that is how it is and that's the trend for the future. The subreddit contains a lot of bite-size Instagram-style statistical maps. The community upvotes this content and if that's what they want, that's the direction the sub will take."
No One Lives In The Green Part Of New Zealand, the Population Density There Is 0 People Per Km And That Is About 78% Of New Zealand Land
And plenty of space for sheep! 26 million grazing sheep compared to five million people haha
Load More Replies...Ummm, no not right. According to this map, where I am from is supposed to be uninhabited and I can assure you there are people there.
Lets hope that our human race doesn't destroy the beautiful place, with climate change or over population as we seen to do to lots of other natural beauties. Thank you for listening to my rant.
Since a good part of South Island is mountainous it's not particularly surprising. A beautiful country led by an inspirational Prime Minister.

Yeah, earthquakes are awful, but other places have forest fires or frequent shootings or have to live in gated communities to feel safe, etc. Bad earthquakes are infrequent and we build to survive them. Christchurch was a bad one because they'd never really had big ones there so weren't all built for it - and one building was responsible for 62% of the deaths in that one.
Load More Replies...I wonder if this is just playing with numbers, because I live in some of that green and I'm definitely not the only one. Firstly, there's technically a big difference between one square kilometre and one kilometre square. One square kilometre is a thousand square metres, so technically that's a square that is about 31.62 metres a side. The land my house is on is over 8,000 square metres, so by the rules of this map my wife and I don't exist. Actually, that would explain a lot. Edit - the agreed definition of a square kilometre seems to 1 km per side, so I stand corrected there. That said, I still live in one of the green bits.
Zealandia, The 8th Continent That's Almost Entirely Submerged
Feature it doesn't have: Elevation above surrounding oceanic crust in one, big dry piece.
There's actually a LOT of continental material below sea level... much of it much closer to the surface than most of Zealandia... much of that in the Atlantic Ocean, named for Atlantis. The Bahamas are spread over an area the size of a major European nation, separated by water only a few meters deep. There are huge banks that are too shallow for navigation by huge vessels and that are also the size of nations.
Load More Replies...Ikr! I live here and only learned this a couple of months ago!
Load More Replies...how deep is it under the OCEAN? continents are attached to the bottom of the ocean; they arent floating above. this may have been above the water a long time ago but now all thats left is New Zealand
We are mostly submerged, but technically meet all requirements for being a continent. We were part of gondwanaland, it's all about technicalities. "Zealandia is approximately the area of greater India and, like India, Australia, Antarctica, Africa, and South America, was a former part of the Gondwana supercontinent"

It really is. I especially like the fact because of the size of the country and unique topography, there are so many drainages and basins.

a river was meaning life for ancient people. not a case if biggest cities are built around a river.
Patrick, the founder of the subreddit, was kind enough to go into detail about the online group, map-making, and his passion for maps on a number of occasions.
“I've noticed, especially as I've gotten older, that you only have so much time on this planet and every day that is wasted is a day that you'll never get back. If you want to get out and explore the world you just have to do it,” Patrick previously told Bored Panda about seizing the day and starting your adventure today, instead of putting these things off indefinitely.
“Some adventures will cost time and resources, but the real question I ask myself is can I afford not to do some goal I have my heart set on. There are so many opportunities in this world that it may be hard to choose, but if you wait too long those opportunities will be gone forever," Patrick said that we have to seize opportunities to live (really live) as they come.
Territories Where Married Gay Couples Can Buy Rifles To Protect Their Marijuana Plants
I love it so much. I want more oddly specific maps
Load More Replies...I like how Canada is all of the way filled in. As well as South Africa! You go…. Guys?
SA here, thanks, we try....just have to sort all our other s**t out
Load More Replies...I don't think we are allowed to use guns to defend property in Canada, are we?
Under Section 40 of the Criminal Code: "Everyone who is in possession of a dwelling house is justified in using as much force as necessary, to prevent any person from forcibly breaking into or entering the dwelling house without lawful authority." It appears that if you use deadly force, you are likely to have charges brought against you, though those charges are very likely to be dropped.
Load More Replies...I live in South Africa, this is false, you can't use a gun to protect property, only persons. BUT, gay marriage is legal and so is growing marijuana and if all works out with the cops, etc, they can buy a rifle. So it should read, legally married gay people who legally grow plants can legally buy rifles.
Can't you protect yourself on your property though? Isn't that why Oscar Pretorious got off?
Load More Replies...Seriously. A bit random as well. But at least in this area of life, they have equality. About buying a gun-id prefer all the obvious things straight people are able to do that they can't. But that's just me.

Recently Patrick had been working on pixel maps that are bound to get the attention of anyone who’s got a penchant for video games, retro items, or pixel art. "This spring, I was making a lot of pixel maps that looked like old video game graphics. I picked some exotic places like Botswana and Mongolia to make these maps," he revealed a bit about his projects.
"I think a great way to learn about an exotic place is to make a map of it and really give some hours and care into making the map look as good as possible. You really get a connection for a place as you're putting labels on and making decisions about what to include and where to lay everything out,” the founder told Bored Panda.
The Easternmost Point Of Brazil Is Closer To Africa Than To Its Westernmost Point
Yeah. And southern England is closer to France, that it is to Northern England and the east coast of Australia is closer to New Zealand than it is the the west coast of Australia, and the South of Spain is closer to Morocco that it is to the northern boundary of Spain . . .
According to Greek historian, Herodotus (445 B.C.), Africans sailed to the New World before the Vikings in 1021AD and long before Columbus. It's a shame American school children will have to find this out on their own.
and now that Bolsanaro has burned down so much of his own country, you can walk to the west.... he belongs in jail for that.
Of course it is. the Eastern point is on the Atlantic and the Western is on the Pacific.
For those like me who didn’t get it, the distance from Brazil’s easternmost point to Africa is shorter than the distance between Brazil’s east and west points.
The Longest Possible Train Travel In The World
The interesting questions now are: how long would that take? What would a ticket cost?
Portugal to Singapore at 16000km or 10000 miles will set you back for around $7000 or around£5000 per person with change overs and stops. The Express non stop will cost around $5440 or around £4000
Load More Replies...It takes 3 weeks and cost around 7000$ https://www.tripzilla.com/portugal-to-singapore-by-land-train-easy-guide/110412

Load More Replies...According to Patrick, moderating the subreddit is all about keeping a delicate balance and staying realistic: the fact is that you can’t keep everyone happy all the time. Nor should you try to when questions of quality are involved. “Moderating is always a delicate balance. It is impossible to please everybody. If you are too laissez-faire you get a lot of low effort and ugly submissions and the users complain,” he said.
Closer To Paris Or To London?
Nice demonstration of the difficulty of mapping a spherical planet onto a flat sheet - this should be a straight line around the globe...
True....that's why we alao see flight paths curved in the same way as the boundary of the yellow and blue regions because that is the shortest path. Well that is not exactly true because flight routes are charted in a way that airports are in the proximity for emergency landing, but you get the point.
Load More Replies...Which part of Earth is closer to London or Paris doesn't really matter. The fact that matters nowadays, is that Pars (France) has overseas and dependent territories almost everywhere, in every Ocean in the world: - Pacific - French Polynesia, New Caledonia, Wallis and Futuna, Clipperton Island; - Indian Ocean (Southern part) - Mayotte, Reunuion, French Southern and Antarctic Lands; Crozet Islands, Kerguelen Islands, - Atlantic Ocean (Caribbean) - French Guiana, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Saint Martin, Saint Barthelemy; North Atlantic - Saint Pierre and Miquelon; No other single country these days has such number all around the world territories. Fun fact is Norway has it's own island in the South Atlantic Ocean in the Subantarctic region - Bouvet Island, or Bouvetøya.
Countries That Have Yet To See True Temperature Extremes
Being too cold is lucky? Don't know i prefer the heat! Not extreme of course but 35 is not extreme for where i live
Load More Replies...It seems I am best suited to the land of my ancestors. I despise hot weather.
Extreme for whom? I know 30 degrees C is not a lot in Southern Europe, but when Northern Sweden first experienced it our government had to raise severe warnings to keep people up there hydrated.

Water polo was the first team sport in the Olympics, so yeah, it's a real sport.
Load More Replies...Croatia is ranked 47th of all time total medals won out of 149 countries. However, it is the ONLY country within these ranks to have only about 4 million inhabitants. You can now estimate what this tells you about their athletic skills. 😎 A country like India is ranked 58th and Hong Kong with almost double the population of Croatia 89th.
Funniest thing is that Hungary and Serbia don't have own sea
However, being too strict is also not an option. “If you are too strict, then you risk alienating those who supply the content for the sub. I try to find a balance between these two extremes. Overall, I'm satisfied with the moderating and I don't foresee any changes in the immediate future," Patrick explained.
Variations Of The Given Name “Paul”
In Russian Pasha is the "shortened" (informal) version of Pavel. Doesn't really count as a variation, unless you name all other informal versions as well (such as Pavlik, Pavlusha etc.). I've never heard of Pol as a name in Russian, except spelling latin Paul in the cyrillic alphabet (like Paul McCartney). So doesn' count either
I know kids with the name Pawel but everyone calls them Pasha. How do you prenonce Pawel correctly?
Load More Replies...Well, that's very "humble, small and modest" of you,:-)
Load More Replies...Well now, that's a random choice for a map...now do John, David, Richard, Peter, James, Mark aaaand.....Horatio?
Similarly to Finland, Estonia has both Paavo and Paul, so slightly misleading.
Switzerland is missing I noticed - here, it's "Paul" too. Heard "Pauli" too tough
Paulė, Paulina - Lithuania but an often same name can have different endings and therefore correspond to a different sex.
Land Reclamation In The Netherlands
During low tide, you can walk from the mainland to the islands in the North as our country is flat as a pancake :)
I think the most amazing thing about this is that the Dutch had Satellite imagery in 1300
I remember the first time my Dutch friends came to England. We went to stay with friends in Yorkshire and they were going, "Look at these mountains! They're incredible!" They were hills. Just regular hills. They couldn't believe there might be something much bigger.
I remember when my cousins first joined us for a holiday in Belgium. We crossed the border near Visé and they were in complete awe because of the rock wall there. They were 9 years old, though ;-)
Load More Replies...not to mention a lot of the land present in 1300 was swampy. We've also reclaimed/managed that :)
The pieces of land so reclaimed are called polders. There's a saying, "God created the world, but the Dutch made the Netherlands." Much of the Netherlands lies below sea level - hence the name - and they keep the water out with dikes and water pumps. In fact, many of the iconic Dutch windmills were not mills but actually wind-powered drainage pumps.
Butter Or Olive Oil? Based On Actual Per Capita Consumption
Well, Luxembourg was a bit of a surprise to me actually.
Load More Replies...So basically the people that grow olives eat olive oil. The people that don't, use butter. But I do want to know what is with the gray square near Greece?
The grey square is Kosovo, a partially recognized independent country that Serbia claims as part of its territory. It's ethnically around 96% Albanian Kosovar Muslims, hence the desire for independence from the majority Serbian nation of Serbia, where they feel underrepresented and ignored at best, and discriminated against at worst.
Load More Replies...Eastern Europe has high rates of heart disease while Western Europe has very low rates. Butter, especially grassfed butter, is very good for you! The higher rates in the east are caused by high rates of smoking and obesity, and lower income of both the people and counties. Also Eastern Europeans are more likely to use vegetable and seed oils (ie canola, margarine, etc.) which were touted as healthy for *decades* but newer research shows are actually driving our health into the ground. Animal based fats like butter and tallow are actually very good for you. 2 years ago I had high cholesterol. I switched from canola and margarine to Olive and avocado oils and grassfed butter and my cholesterol has gone down significantly.
Load More Replies...In Turkey, unfortunately people mostly use sunflower oil. Because both butter and olive oil are very expensive to afford
Add Brazil to the olive oil countries... The Portuguese hooked us up good...
In Bulgaria we use sunflower oil for cooking, few people use butter or olive oil, as they are expensive.
Not true for Croatia. Along our coastline, especialy Istria, we make some of the finest olive oils in the world and it is consumed a lot
Some people are naturally more skilled at navigation and using maps than others. Though, of course, navigation is a skill and you can get better at it so long as you’re patient, dedicated, and spend enough time honing it. “The older I get, the more I realize that spatial awareness just comes naturally to some people, and for others, it's a struggle," Patrick said. “In a way, reliance on Google Maps has made us dumber. We let the navigation app do all the work for us and don't engage with making the decisions.”
The Strait Of Gibraltar
This strait is what keeps the Mediterranean full. As the volume of water in the rivers that empty into the Med is less than the volume of water that evaporates every day. It's thanks to the Atlantic that it doesn't dry up.
what application used to draw this map that makes it looks like 3d?
Europe If The Sea Level Rose 100m
Eh, the Dutch would survive. We'd just build a giant dome over the Netherlands and continue on as if nothing happened
We might have, 200 years back. By now we get lost in people that don't believe it will happen, politicians taking ages and at the end an open dome wil be built as a compromise.
Load More Replies...Yeah, a 100 m, that's a lot. Obviously a lot of Europe would be flooded. Now do it for the estimated 1-2 meter...
The Netherlands would be much bigger because all the flooded land would be free real estate.
It is inaccurate. There is absolutely no body of water in the center of East Europe which can grow so big and take large parts of Hungary, Romania and Serbia.
Rising seas means rising rivers that then become large bodies of water.
Load More Replies...Just raising the water level on existing topography doesn't account for the weight of the water, which will actually push the topography down even farther. This can happen for two reasons. First, coastal areas are often made of highly compressible sedimentary debris. The second, the extra weight can actually cause the underlying tectonic plate to bow downward a bit. Unfortunately, this lowering of the land is often not depicted on maps of projected sea level rise. Probably because it's very difficult to predict, and also perhaps because it's not a very well understood phenomenon. In the same way, areas now covered by glaciers will start to see uplift as those areas start to melt.
Share Of Young People Aged 25 -34 Living With Parents
It's also a question of culture. Like Italy for example, where living with the parent until pretty old is not frown up.
Load More Replies...Culture plays a part in this too - we Slavs put a lot of value on family and several generations living together is more common (though not always very peaceful).
Yeah, my gran says more than three generations living in a house together is a recipe for trouble. My dad's parents solved this by building a three-story house with a separate apartment on each floor - one for each family unit. So everyone has their own space, but they are close enough to help each other out.
Load More Replies...Anyone else just happy to be classified as "young" over the age of 30 :')
I love how people say that it's a cultural phenomenon for young people to live with their parents, but I can testify as a former resident of one of the red countries that in 98% this is not the case. The wages are so low that it is just not economically viable to rent, unless you are a young family (2 incomes), and even then you struggle with the winter electricity bills. Everyone yearns to have a place of their own, a car and spare income for entertainment, travel and new clothes. No one wants to share a flat with the previous generation long-term. But when you get your salary you realize that once you cover your basic expenses you are left with practically nothing. Which is why a ton of young people either move abroad and work what is close to slave labor in order to save money to buy a small flat back home, or end up in crippling debt for 30+ years.
We evolved to live in a close knit group. Women literally live past their reproductive years (menopause). That's because grandma's provided an evolutionary advantage, by caring for and teaching the children while mom and dad were out hunting and gathering. We are not built to be alone, think about the pandemic of depression and loneliness over the past year and a half. Right now all the responsibility of meeting house, caring for children, cooking falls on moms (statistically). We evolved to live in groups, to share the work and fun of being alive and together. So in a way those countries who are considered poor, likely have deep bonds with the people around them. It's also been proven that having deep bonds with many people is good for health and longevity. https://www.sciencenews.org/article/grandmothers-survival-evolution
Oh no, in 2 years I'll be too old to be a young person living with my parents, will I just be an old person living with my parents then?
Well it ain't called Stockholm Syndrome for nothing lol I'm going to go to my corner now after that horrendously lame dad joke
The founder had some advice for everyone about how we can develop our navigation skills in our local area. It’s a great way to get your foot in the door before moving on to bigger adventures.
"If you live in a place with a tall hill or some viewpoint, go up there some time and look around. Try to identify as many landmarks as you can. Notice where they are in relation to each other. Look for new landmarks that you've never noticed before and keep them in mind as you navigate your hometown.”
Number Of Prisoners Per 100 000 People In European Countries
The US is at 639 per 100,000. Make of that what you will.
Load More Replies...I would like to see the number for some of the worlds largest countries. China, India and of course the USA.
the USA has the world's highest incarceration rate, 639 per 100,000. China lists as #42, with 121 per 100,000. India is # 95 with 35 per 100,000. ........ The country with the lowest is San Marino, with 6 per 100,000. They only have 2 people in prison, but their national population is also only 33,600. And those 2 people take up 16% of their total jail space. ...... All stats came from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_incarceration_rate
Load More Replies...Oh, Belarus, you're cute. The US rate is 419 per 100,000. And probably growing. This is not because there are more criminals per capita in the US, but because minorities are imprisoned for certain crimes while white people are given community service and such. Welcome to the US Injustice System.
Yet it has less criminals per 100 000 people than the USA. Make of that what you will.
Load More Replies...American here: not only do we have the highest incarceration rate in the world, we are also number two (behind Brazil) for gun violence. Nothing to be proud of.
Traditional Hats Of Europe
The fact that a ski mask is in Russia made me think that crime is very high there.
Load More Replies...As a hat expert I can tell you, this map is utter BS. Almost every single village in Europe has their own kind of traditional hat. Most hats on this map are wrong, too.
The white cap on Sweden should be on Finland too. It's a traditional lukio/gymnasium graduation hat. (the closest equivalent of lukio/gymnasium is hight school, although not exactly the same.)
I don't get why Sweden got the white cap, that's a Norwegian tradition too (although different colours), but we got a sou'wester which isn't "traditional", it's just to not get wet in the rain.
Load More Replies...They've put a traditional Welsh hat in the middle of Lincolnshire. I'm not sure I am convinced by this particular map.
They put it in The Netherlands too. Absolutely not a traditional hat here :D
Load More Replies...Sun Tanning vs. Skin Whitening
I wish everyone could learn to love the skin they're in. Ditto societies. The societal pressure for your skin to be a certain color is ridiculous.
Skin whitening is popular in the countries where a tan is associated with low wage field work. Tanning is popular in the countries where a tan is associated with having enough leisure time to lie around in the sun.
Patrick continued: “If there are rivers or other features that cause chokepoints on bridges or highways, memorize all the bridges and where they go. In this way, you'll know the layout of your city and how to get around.”
Languages Of Europe Using Lemon And Citrus
Preferably one where life gives you citrons.
Load More Replies...In the Netherlands we have both citroen (lemon) and limoen (lime)...
Dito in German. We have Zitrone (lemon) as well as Limone (lemon as well, just more rarely used) and Limette (lime).
Load More Replies...Lemon and citron are not the same thing. Lemon is a hybrid of citron and another citrus fruit, (I think) bitter oranges. Lime is another citron hybrid.
Lemon, citron, citrus, lime... I never understood that, and it really pisses me off.
Citrus is the group of sour/sweet, rindy fruits that include grapefruit, oranges, etc. Citrons are a sour, oval-shaped citrus fruit with a lumpy rind. Lemons and limes are hybrids between citrons and another citrus fruit. I think lemons are citron + bitter orange.

Load More Replies...I don't trust them, but I do believe them and do trust them with having no reason to lie. But no way I will give them my ice cream cone to hold while I wash my hands.
Of course not, trust only extends so afar! But why were you holding your ice cream cone with dirty hands?
Load More Replies...I am shocked that India ranks first here, I thought we would be in the 70%
Don't know why India is shown badly in western media and people go by those facts and ignore the real ones
Load More Replies...Chinese pollution is largely caused by the western world, though. Most plastic production, deforestation, and greenhouse emissions are "exported" from China, Brazil, and India - that is, that the products created by destroying the environment there are ordered from and sent to western nations. Percentage Of Indians With Toilet 2014 vs. 2017
That's one of the few decent things Modi has done right for India-toilets and electricity nationwide. Didn't do anything about the slums though, like idk, HELPING them

Countries That Are Obligated To Defend The United States And Vice Versa
The US invaded Grenada, which was (as is) a member of the Commonwealth and has Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as Head of State.
those not in Europe but nato are Canada, French and British overseas territories. Other countries have other deals with usa.
They are obliged to defend each other (including the United States): the map title skews NATO's perception to something that technically isn't wrong but suggests a different dynamic (that is not true).

Countries Where It's Illegal To Smack Children!
Sweden: in ten years of teaching at middle and high schools with 30% immigrant kids, never had a fight that drew blood. First week in US kid was put in the hospital. Don't have to do school shooting drills either
The word you're looking for is "beat". Funny how in many (all?) of those countries it's illegal to beat up an adult, but not a child.
Bulgaria is included, but the ban is not really enforced. Consequences would only occur if a parent really, really brutalizes a child in an obviously vicious way.
Glad it's illegal here in Scotland. I can't imagine wanting to cause my children pain in any way - I feel bad enough if I step on their toes or bump them by accident
There's discipline and there's abuse. A smack upside the head or butt is not abuse. Society has gotten so much worse now that it's all considered abuse. Just do what you want, there are no consequences.

I’ve always heard of India referred to as “India” by locals, when speaking nationally. I was confused as a kid what Hindustan was as I only heard it on abstract context. I was oblivious to Bharat as a child and rarely heard it used as an adult.
I think it's become more common colloquially somewhat recently due to politicization of the existing terms and petty religious conflict.

Fast food is also very common in the Mediterranean countries. Eating white breat pastries with cheese/meat is common (e.g. Pastizzi), also pasta is basically bread, and its not great for you, no matter how much olive oil you slather on to it. Seafood is awesome, but the lower income population can't really afford the good stuff. So you still end up with people surviving on processed meats with pasta and bottled or canned sauces. I believe the Mediterranean diet should have been the Mediterranean lifestyle, which less and less people keep.

Not defending these percentages at all, but the question included "with soap" which could make people answer NO because they only wash their hands with water.

It should be illegal for all cannabis to be illegal. It's a plant. It's natural. No one has ever overdosed on weed. It's sad that this plant that helps people/makes them have a good time, was suddenly made illegal (Class 1 narcotic along with heroin and meth) because people talked s**t about Nixon, and since he couldn't arrest them for free speech, he made marijuana illegal. Wanna guess what groups were targeted through this law? The hippies against Vietnam and The Black Panthers. F*****g Nixon.
This map isn't correct. In the Netherlands it is still illegal to use, grow, transport, sell or deliver cannabis/marijuana. It is tolerated for private use, but that doesn't mean that the police can't confiscate your weed during a traffic stop or when your neighbors complain that your 5 plants in your garden are stinking too much.
Well it's actually missing the last step where growing and selling is legal. Like in Uruguay.

Percent Of The Population Incarcerated In Prisons Across The Eu And The Us. This Calculation Takes The Entire Population Into Account, If Only The Adult Population Would Be Taken Into Account, These Numbers Would Be Higher
In many states in the U.S., prisoners can't vote. However, prisoners do count as residents for census purposes, which impacts congressional seats and funding. Inmates are also frequently shipped to states far away from their home state for prison. This means, states who want more political power are incentived to build prisons, imprison people, and keep people imprisoned for longer to have more funding coming in and more political sway. It's a really, really awful idea that continues completely legally in the U.S.
After watching 48 Hours, I can see why Oklahoma has a high amount in prison. There are a lot of murders that take place in Tulsa.
Of course Louisiana and Mississippi are both red on this map. They need to exploit the prisoners as free labor,
Homeless People Per 10,000 People In The United States
I live in the unfashionable part of California and I believe this. Everywhere low-income housing is becoming high-income housing, and the poor have no place to go but the streets.
I recollect reading an article on this very topic. Zillow did an analysis of buyer's income vs home sales in California. Rising cost of housing in California, esp San Francisco, has forced upper class into middle class homes, middle class into lower class, and the lower class are pushed onto the streets. California has built only half of the projected hundreds of thousands of new affordable housing complexes. With recent job losses, exising affordable housing have no vacancies. And you are right: these poor folks haven't anywhere to go. Some are lucky enough to still have their cars. Criminalization of homelessness is not the solution. They take prison spots that ought to be reserved for true criminals. Then again, I also read that if you see a homeless woman, the question is not has she been raped, but how many times has she been raped. The perpetrators are often themselves homeless.
Load More Replies...And the weird thing is that there are available homes. Available homes that stay empty :(
Those homes are privately owned by either a homeowner or a lending institution, both looking to sell. The vacant homes may also be tied up in legal disputes between homeowners and lending institutions. Their homeowner's insurance policies do not allow the homes to be let out as rentals or allow unknown, unvetted persons to live there. In addition, the homes would likely have to be rezoned. California would best fulfill its promise to build more affordable housing for them.

California, New York, Massachusetts, DC, Oregon, Hawaii and Washington have been utterly dominated by Democrats. They are also where almost all of the nation's homeless live. Heavily restrictive building policies create an artificial scarcity of housing, which in turn creates liberals, which in turn create heavily restrictive building policies. I'll cut some slack for Hawaii.
Maryland and New Jersey are also in the top 10 most liberal states. Their rates don't fit your theory. I'd argue that the states you've mentioned are less likely to criminalize homelessness. Throwing homeless people in prison doesn't actually fix anything, though it does impact the numbers for reports like this.

Ummmm...no. Not even close.. Most people in the US are not descended from anyone who took land or slaughtered people. My family, like many others, came by boat from Europe in the early 1960s.
