There's an old saying that tells us, "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth." Its exact origin is unknown, but an early version of the phrase appeared in print in English in 1546.
The words refer to the art of determining the age of horses by inspecting their mouth, which, even though it's a tricky task, can be done to a considerable degree of accuracy.
So it's a poetic way of reminding us to be grateful for our presents. But the subreddit 'Choosing Beggars' can also illustrate this basic act of human decency. And it does that by showcasing everyone who can't — or, for some reason, won't — express gratitude.
So join us as we explore the depths of this online community in search of entitled people complaining about free stuff. Believe me, simply witnessing their ridiculous behavior should be enough to once and for all remember the importance of a plain "thank you." Even if we don't mean it, at least it helps us to avoid looking like entitled brats.

The sense of entitlement is strong with these folks. They clearly believe that the world owes them without giving anything in return.
Entitled people have a tendency to adopt goals based around their own self-image, often leading them into conflict with others.
While they may be able to put up an exterior of being nice and well-mannered on the outside, research shows that it's all just for show; deep down inside this is usually not how they truly feel about themselves or other individuals around them.

One study even suggests that entitlement can be dangerous. In 2018, researchers from Case Western Reserve University found that entitled people are more likely to experience chronic disappointment, unmet expectations, and a self-reinforcing cycle of behavior which puts them at risk for harm psychologically or socially.
Think of it like this: when someone thinks of themselves as superior, anything that challenges their worldview is met with defensiveness and anger. This creates a vicious cycle: the more they are challenged by society's limitations, the angrier they become at these "injustices."

I saw a similar thing when we had a promotion at our store and gave away free cups of vanilla bean ice cream from a local place. The number of parents who complained because we didn't have chocolate/strawberry/bubblegum/whatever flavor their wittle precious wanted was higher than the number of parents/customers who said "Ooh, high quality free ice cream? Thank you!" That's before we got to the ones complaining that they/their kids are lactose intolerant and we should have something for them, too, because it wasn't fair. That was the last community promotion we had, because people are selfish jerks.

However, social psychologist Jane Adams highlighted that every now and then we mistake entitlement for a sense of self-confidence projected by competent, assured, often charismatic others.
And sometimes, a bit of a fleeting, situational rush of entitlement might even be a good thing. "It can increase creativity and lead to novel, unusual solutions to problems, the kind of out-of-the-box thinking that organizations and employers encourage," Adams pointed out in Psychology Today.

"Pejoratively labeling an individual or a generation as entitled sometimes reveals more about us than it does about them," Adams continued. "Our unwillingness to recognize another's meritorious worth or hard-earned success, which indicates how often we think with our beliefs rather than about them."
The social psychologist said that a good example of this is how Hillary Clinton was viewed as entitled when she ran for political office, but not when she was actually in it.

Researchers at Harvard and Cornell who studied 99 undergraduates and 98 MBA candidates found that entitled people don't follow instructions, because they see them as unfair.
"They would rather take a loss themselves than agree to something unfair," said the authors, who correlated high scores on entitlement measurements with difficulty complying with the 'rules' of the experimental task. Attempting to understand why students ignored them (selfishness, control, or punishment), they found that fairness was the primary reason.

Entitled people want to be different from others. But just as frequently they come across as indifferent to others. That's why they often provoke such negative responses in those they encounter, especially those they don't personally know.
If you suspect that you might also be acting like a spoiled brat sometimes, there are things you can do to overcome it:
- Recognize the feeling of entitlement. Refuse to let it impact your life. If you have a hard time recognizing the feeling, think about other times when you felt entitled and then notice how much that feeling resembles what you're feeling now.
- Understand that you are not entitled to anything. Unfortunately, the world does not owe you anything. Life is unfair and it's your job to make the best of what you get in life, not to complain about what you deserve but don't have.

- Find ways to help others without expecting anything in return. How can you serve others without expecting anything in return? Simple: volunteer your time. If you want something in return for your services, consider that what you're getting is "happiness" from knowing that you have helped those less fortunate than yourself.
- Learn the difference between needs and wants. People with a sense of entitlement have a problem distinguishing between needs and wants. This makes it very difficult to make healthy, sound decisions since you constantly want more than you need. Instead, focus on what you truly need in life and cut out what you simply want.

- Focus on what's in your control rather than what isn't. You can only control your own thoughts, feelings, actions, and responses. Stop focusing on what other people are doing or how they are responding to situations. Instead, focus on changing the things that you have some influence over in your life.
- Practice gratitude for everything good in your life, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem at the time. Consider everything you have in your life right now: a home, family or friends, good health, etc. Take a moment to be grateful for everything that you have and realize that there are a lot of people out there who would love to trade places with you.

Why not donate healthy food yourself? At least they tried to actually make a difference
- Think about how your sense of entitlement is affecting other people in your life. How have other people been affected by your sense of entitlement? Have you unintentionally made them feel guilty or resentful because they didn't live up to your expectations? If so, remember that other people have their own lives to live and their own feelings. A person's actions toward you aren't necessarily directly tied to how much you mean to them.
- Take care of yourself and be kind to yourself because nobody else will do it for you. It might seem counterintuitive, but one way out of self-entitlement is to be kinder to yourself. When you are feeling entitled, it can be difficult or impossible for you to take care of your own needs. Instead, you might fall into a place of self-neglect because you are expecting others to take care of you.
Following these steps might not entirely cure your sense of entitlement, but they should reduce it to a point where you won't be complaining to people who want to give you free gifts.

You're Not Giving Away Enough Free Stuff
Free Government Funded Food Package Isn’t Up To Their Standard
These parcels were sent out to families of kids on free school meals (and others such as disabled folk) at the beginning of lock down. It was supposed to be 2 weeks worth of lunches, and cost the taxpayer £30 each. There was less than £5 of usually poor quality food, the surplus being pocketed by the private company our corrupt Tory govt appointed to do this. It would have been cheaper and way more effective to give struggling people the money direct. No, this wasn't a rejected act of kindness and charity, it was a scam.
Actually looking at the thread on Reddit (and the items shown) this is not the Free School Food Box - this is the Lock-Down Free Food Parcel that went to people shielding. This was a different scheme altogether and much more useful. It was also weekly. The school meal one was a disgrace I totally agree. This photo is only showing part of what was provided in the boxes I received (they did vary week to week but the quantities of food were similar). It also included oats, rice, box of cereals, tea, coffee, biscuits, tinned fruit and a few other tinned foods, potatoes as well as the carrots, shampoo, body wash... and probably other things I can't remember. I know because as a disabled person I was eligible and received the boxes myself. I didn't need them so gave them to some local families.
Load More Replies...Nothing. There was a lot more to most weekly deliveries than this as well. People think this was the school food parcel and it isn't, this is the box provided to those who were on the shielding list. As I said, those I saw had way more in them.
Load More Replies...If I remember correctly, the organization got quite a bit of money from the government (per person in need) for this, and instead of spending the money for it's intended purpose they pocketed most of it and gave very little to the people that needed it.
As someone has pointed out, wrong boxes. This was the free food parcels sent to those people who were told by the Government to shield.
Load More Replies...This is wrong. This was in the UK. The food parcels were sent to families with children entitled to free school meals to help them feed the children while they were unable to attend school during lockdown. The company that was responsible for putting them together were paid a lot of money by the government to do so, but basically short changed needy families instead. The parcels were meant to have enough food in them to provide lunch to a child for 2 weeks and most contained not even a few days worth. They also provided very little nutrition with little to no fruit or vegetables in some boxes. The box above is merely an example. There were many other low income families who had been relying on these boxes to feed their children during lockdown that were taken advantage of.
This isn't the same food parcel - the one shown was from the scheme where free food parcels were provided weekly to people shielding. It was better in several ways - more food, better range of food and provided weekly. The foods had to be stable so mainly tinned, boxed and dried goods but did include fresh potatoes and carrots and really not that awful. The free school meal one was appalling, no doubt about it. Check it on Reddit - provides more info but also I recognise some of the products I received in my weekly parcel!
Load More Replies...The US government could learn from this. (Not the beggars part, the sending food bit)
Food banks are free and typically have more produce than this in the US...I visited my local food bank a few times during the pandemic. I had never been and I was so pleasantly surprised by the variety and amount of what I got. Now I volunteer at that food bank, so yeah, not sure what you're on about!

Load More Replies...During pandemic lockdowns, no less. These jerks never would have survived the War years.
If the current government had been in, nobody would have survived the war years because every soldier would be issued with a plastic cap gun valued at £189,000 by the chosen supplier, and the navy would belong to a private ferry company that had literally no ships.
Load More Replies...I'm actually with the complainer on this one. Imagine being vulnerable and in lockdown and someone sends this package to live in for a week.
The ones I saw had way more food than that and wasn't that bad. Fresh, tinned, dried goods - it was meant to supplement, not provide everything. Supermarkets were supposed to (and did) prioritise those at home shielding and provide food via online ordering/home deliveries. The people I knew who got them were actually perfectly fine with them.🤷 There were teething problems in some areas but it did improve even in those cases.
Load More Replies...Deleted comment, best voted comment (so far) gave good context, stating this was a scam for people in need during lockdown. So it's still an "Eff you!" moment, just towards their local government.
I got one of these for my child. There was bread, cheese, yogurts and apples. The bread only had one more day before it went out of date. The cheese for sandwiches was enough for one sandwich. Knowing that I had to rely on these because I didn't have enough food or money for my own child made me feel worthless. I wanted to be grateful for what I was given but when you know the rich or just getting richer of you struggles is hard to be grateful
Different food parcel. This is the box that was sent weekly to the vulnerable who had to shield during the pandemic. The school one was dreadful. The food and toiletries provided in the box for those shielding wasn't amazing but it was definitely better. There were a few hiccups at the start with inconsistent quantities but it did get better and the people I know receiving them were not unhappy.

Give this stuff to the lady unsatisfied with the school store womans products
Mmm…I bet those struggling families and pensioners stuck in lockdown appreciated the ingredients to make carrot sandwiches. Paternalistic Tory fascists who get over £60 meal allowance a day.
To be fair there were some absolutely shocking examples going around at the time, half a sandwich, half an apple etc. think the photo they chose for the article was misleading
Because they are actually showing a different box and the news article was about the food parcel provided to those shielding. It was a weekly box and and wasn't anywhere near as bad as the school one. A friend of mine was shielding and she got them - said there was quite a lot in them. More than is shown in the photo but I believe I read at the time that there were regional variations and also that they had a bumpy start but did get better....
Load More Replies...The main issue was how much the uk government paid for that food parcel
Other posters are right. It was a huge scam. My son is disabled and got the packages, initially I was delighted for him as I felt it was an amazing gesture to get anything. Then I realised the amount of money the products were meant to represent, this was tax payers money paying for it. The products were worth about £5 if bought from a supermarket which they weren’t. They were bulk products that would have cost a fraction of £5 and were often unhygienically repackaged in the small quantities given to people. The money that was meant for these people was pocketed by millionaires on Tory backed contracts (awarded these contracts by their mates and associates). Very sad. My son had us to supplement his food, others didn’t.
Sorry you had that experience, people are justified in being outraged by the school food box scandal. That isn't actually the story that the photo refers to. This was a free food parcel sent to those asked by the government to sheild due to their increased risks from covid. This couple may have received an inadequate box, as I expect some did, but most of the shielding people's boxes had a lot more in them. The value of the box was way more than £5 but that was the figure related to the school box, not this one. Not going to defend the tories or any of their mates getting contracts though!!! Loathsome!
Load More Replies...Totally agree with this one. My local school paid out of their pockets to make sure those who received free school meals got a decent parcel. Others weren't so lucky.
This wasn't the school free food one though, this is the other free food provided at the start of the lockdown. People who were shielding got them. They were better than the school ones - even the worst (I heard they varied a lot to start) were better than those!
Load More Replies...I second Best behave..'s comment. The Tories are scum who profited from the poor during the pandemic. The still do. Corrupt, yet folk still vote for them.
Weird how some people are so deluded, isn't it? I listen to people on TV defend Johnson and his cronies! How? Why? Don't they want better??? Though Best Behave is wrongly talking about the schools food parcels. The story above was actually relating to the free food boxes that went to people shielding. They weren't that bad, just basic (and the photo shown wasn't a typical example, they had far more food). The school one was appalling.
Load More Replies...These people were not entitled beggars. They were vulnerable people promised support by was of two weeks worth of food to help them feed themselves or their families in the face of increased costs during lockdown. For people reliant on that support, to be stiffed by the company contracted to provide it was a scandal. People here sneering and judging without any clue are just ghastly.
It was a weekly free food parcel containing basic supplies to help those shielding and had nothing to do with rising costs. This is not the free school food box (which was bad) that has also been mentioned and, I think, confused people. Supermarkets also had to prioritise those on the shielding list for home deliveries. Photo doesn't do the typical weekly box justice as most had far more food and it was all branded items, not generic or value c r a p. Not sneering, just think people don't have their facts quite right here.
Load More Replies...Don't blame them. kidney beans are a known allergen and we can't eat them. the meatballs are edible if you have really not eaten for 3 days, and the rest is not very nutritious other than the baked beans which have protein iron and some vitamins in. I personally could not eat that white bread because I would not s**t for a fortnight if I did. the fact that the taxpayers were paying £30 for these when they cost less than a fiver is also a bit much.
These were not the £30/£5 boxes for school children. These were weekly and were sent to those with certain medical conditions, immunocompromised and told to stay at home and shield and so forth. Never saw kidney beans in the ones I saw - also had quite a bit more food and stuff like tea and coffee. I remember a lot of tinned peaches! Oats, rice, pasta... biscuits! Not the most nutritious I don't disagree.
Load More Replies...Looks like a lot of posters didn't get the message about the truth of this item. Read the thread please before posting rubbish. It was a scam, government funded with taxpayer's money, but the company which got the contract stole the money and gave the people c**p. Big UK scandal in the early days of the pandemic. Business as usual for inept governments everywhere. I suggest this item be deleted as not being representative of the headlined topic.
Just another example of the British Conservatives aiming to turn us into the States.
Load More Replies...This shouldn’t be here. It was a complete stuff up from the get go. Cost the tax payer 60 bucks per parcel and the families got about 10-15 bucks worth of food
That was the school food parcels fiasco. This story relates to the free food parcels sent to people on the shielding list and were honestly not that bad. Generally had a lot more food than shown, included toiletries and were not the cost value ratio you, and others, are quoting (again, that was the school food parcel). People aren't reading the comments made by those who got these parcels, I was one of them and can speak from personal experience. There were hiccups and regional variations at the start but they got better. People could also still order home deliveries from supermarkets and if on the shielding list were prioritised over those not needing to shield. I have been getting home deliveries for years and had no problems continuing this during the pandemic. These boxes weren't about helping those in need per se, just those who were asked to stay home and keep safe.

He tells us he is banned from there so we offer to go in and get it for him. He declines saying he wants money for a KFC instead. We decline, tell him that if he was so desperate for food he would not be so picky and walk off. Heard him badger someone else for money as we walked away.
There was an animal/environmental charity sending out free activity packs to try and engage more children a while ago. It was just a little pack with a guide to spotting wildlife, a picture to colour in, tips to be more environmentally conscious etc. Several parents were complaining they hadn’t received their packs within x days, their children were upset and they needed the pack to entertain them during school holidays blah blah blah. It’s FREE, you’ve not even paid a penny towards it. It annoyed me so much that I had to comment even though I’m nothing to do with the charity. I hate that kind of attitude with a passion.
I wish I had screenshots of my experience. I once posted on NextDoor that I had some free clay pigeons (for skeet shooting) up for grabs. I included a picture of the box and a count (there were 18 or 20) in my post. A woman said she wanted them, I told her I'd put them on my front porch for her to pick up. She later messaged me to scream at me about how much I had wasted her time for so few clay pigeons, and how she had to pay her assistant to drive across town to pick them up. Sorry my free stuff was such a burden on you!
Since you posted the number of clay pigeons, she can't blame you for her lack of numeracy skills.

I am an amateur baker who spent alot of my time playing with fondant that I'm capable of making a really decent cake. I made a cake for someone's kids birthday that was ninja turtles themed and they thought that I didn't deserve more than $40 for it. I did the math for ingredients and time and I should've charged absolute minimum, friend price, of $150. I'm not a professional, and not to toot my own horn but I have a bit of skill and this guy was so annoyed paying $40 which was mostly for ingredients since my hourly rate would've been like $1.50 at most. Since then, I won't make a cake for anyone who isn't very close family or friend and only if i offer. The $40 just barely covered ingredients and materials and the cake was huge and I spent 2.5 days on it. Never again have I made a cake for someone because people think they are deserving of below cost cakes. And I have some severe medical issues that should render me incapable of making an extravagant cake.
I know this is long winded but it was just so infuriating. I made really amazing cupcakes for a friend's kids fundraiser and they not only covered ingredients but when I told them I didn't need more than cost they went ahead and made me the most phenomenal pierogies outside of Poland that one can imagine as well as kielbasa. Still bothers to this day this guy thought my work was only worth $20 when it weighed like 10 lbs and I even had made a custom box to carry the cake that looked like a custom pizza box specifically for their kid.

that's the result of the doubling down strategy, intentionally taught from pre-school to government - make them deliver, then pay repairs, then insurance, then moral damage etc. It goes also in the opposite sense - you want me to PAY for your help? aren't you entitled? or, what the poor want, freebies?

Here is my complaint. You spend $1,000's on training and college to be in the IT field, just to have your parents always asking for tech support, without so much as a thank you! But, borrow $5 from them and they will NEVER forget it!
Not even a thank you? C**p, miserly and no manners. I think you've earned the right or privilege to tell them, "Sorry, not a good time, but you can call [name of company] for tech support."

Reminds me of a time my wife and I were out and about. Guy comes up to us saying he is starving and has no money. One of us offers to give him £5 for a sandwich and a drink from a cafe over the road.

When I check out the group, and I'm asking for more information, I would never dream of behaving the same way. They are giving you stuff that you want/need free. This means that you should be grateful, polite and asking for no more
I am an amateur baker who spent alot of my time playing with fondant that I'm capable of making a really decent cake.

It would be so difficult for me if I ever encountered these types of people. I'd either try to accommodate if they seemed nice enough on a bad day or verbally explode in an attempt to make their future generations feel ashamed of both our behaviors.
that's the result of the doubling down strategy, intentionally taught from pre-school to government - make them deliver, then pay repairs, then insurance, then moral damage etc. It goes also in the opposite sense - you want me to PAY for your help? aren't you entitled? or, what the poor want, freebies?
Honestly, none of these people actually know how it is to have nothing, like really nothing. I know it is not very nice for me to think that, but it would teach them a lesson to be in this situation, learn how it is to actually have nothing.
Is "nerve-wracking" a word? I thought it was nerve-wrecking which means being very nervous or something being very suspenseful
Nerve-wracking/nerve-racking is correct, nerve-wrecking is not a word.

This was a hard read. I get irritated pretty easily so I'm not sure why I did that to myself 😂. Man, some people...
