It is ridiculous and, frankly, shocking that some people are still unaware of the existence of the LGBTQ+ community in this day and age. Whether they’re oblivious completely by accident or entirely on purpose, these people pretend that folks who are lesbian, gay, bi, trans, and queer don’t exist on Planet Earth.

What’s more, they’re ignorant of the everyday challenges LGBTQ+ people face. Some of those challenges even extend to digital spaces, such as the bias in AI-driven dating apps that often overlook queer users altogether.

Bored Panda has collected screenshots of the times that straight people forgot that LGBTQ+ people are actually a part of society.

When you’re done reading through this list right here, you can check out Bored Panda’s previous article about the times that people had clearly been living under a rock right here.

Accredited psychotherapist and author Silva Neves, from the UK, explained to Bored Panda why some people pretend that LGBTQ+ people don't exist and went into detail about the discrimination, homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia they still have to deal with in 2022.

According to the psychotherapist, for some straight people, ignoring the existence of LGBTQ+ is to stay comfortable in their own lives.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think if your beliefs affect someone else's health, they shouldn't be considered. Another person's freedom of religious expression shouldn't affect my freedom of religious expression.

"Lifestyle"?? I know a straight couple with a house and two kids. I also know a gay couple with a house and two kids. Pretty similar lifestyles. Kudos to the professor for suggesting the student choose a different lifestyle.

Yeah, the idiots who think that they magically wake up one day after being completely straight and "choose" to be gay and live the "homosexual lifestyle". I always want to ask them when they "chose" to live the straight "lifestyle"....It is so stupid it hurts.

It's so beyond weird to me that people imagine other people having sex and that's what they discriminate against. Why are you imagining people having sex and naked in the first place and if it's something you find "unseemly" why are you going to that length to imagine it? Sounds like you might like it and that's what upsets you.

When I was in college, I took a job as a mock patient for medical students and my assigned role was to be a closeted gay person who didn't want to disclose who my partner was. The first two students never figured it out, but the third was immediately like, "so you gay?" 🙄

Some doctors in Texas are currently following a request made by governor Abbot to report anyone in the LGBT+ community, especially parents of trans children. These families are then investigated by CPS for "child abuse" I'm awaiting the day people start disappearing

"People pretend the LGBTQ+ people don't exist because it is easier to stay with pre-conceived ideas of what they think they know about human beings. People still believe that being heterosexual is the only 'normal' and everything else is 'weird,'" psychotherapist Silva told Bored Panda.

"Ignoring the existence of the LGBTQ+ people is a way to stay comfortable with their own lives and not open to the diversity of humanity. Opening up to the diversity of sexual orientations requires being open to 'not knowing' and be curious enough."

The LGBTQ+ people still face many challenges in the West. According to Silva, these differ from country to country. And far from every Western country is as liberal and progressive as its neighbors.

"For example, in the UK, the LGBTQ+ people have legal rights and are protected by law under its discrimination act. However, some other European countries, such as Poland, have strong anti-LGBTQ+ rights and therefore people are not protected in that country, worse, some are even hunted," Silva gave an example of how two different European countries see the same community.

I honestly don't get the whole 'Oh, I hope my child is NEVER gay, oh, that would be so awful!' thing. Like, shouldn't they be more worried about their child becoming a rapist? Or just an over all trash human?

However, Silva warned, that even in the UK, having legal rights doesn't automatically mean that there is no discrimination. "Unfortunately, there is still much homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia. There are numerous reports of LGBTQ+ people being attacked only for holding the hand of their same gender partner in the streets, for example."

He continued: "One of the main opposition to LGBTQ+ people is religious beliefs as many religious people do not agree with accepting LGBTQ+ people as equal human beings. Many LGBTQ+ people are rejected by their own family when they come out. Some can feel very isolated. Because LGBTQ+ people are still ostracised in our societies, they tend to develop poor mental health and misuse of alcohol and drugs as coping strategies."

Emily Dickinson may have had social anxiety, but licking the seal on a used envelope isn't a symptom of that. Open-mouthed kissing is not a sure sign of mental illness in most societies, either. If you do deep kissing, but are disgusted by licking envelopes, no worries. Humans can be inconsistent creatures.

Bored Panda had spoken about homophobia and why some people are homophobic with British psychotherapist Silva before. He explained to us that homophobia can, in part, be explained by a person’s upbringing. The beliefs and values that one’s family members hold can influence how an individual thinks as they grow up. However, this isn’t the entire story. Things are more complicated than that.

“If people grew up with homophobic parents and they haven’t been exposed to different opinions, they are more likely to be homophobic themselves. Most religions promote the inaccurate idea that same-sex relationships and sexual behaviors are unnatural, wrong, against their God, and a sin,” Silva explained to Bored Panda.

I had a gynecologist (/psycho) refusing to sterilise me despite the fact that the operation that he did to me causes many risks of death or miscarriage during pregnancy. He obviously didnt tell me that (so my consent to the surgery was not valid) but he actively risked my life just to keep me fertile. The hospital board did nothing to him of course. At the end I found a gyn willing to give me the hysterectomy i needed for medical reasons (and that the previous 3 gyns refused to do).

Fire that doctor and find one who is not an a*****e. I’ve done that before, when a doctor prescribed a med (chronic condition that popped up after menopause) that was totally wrong for me, put 70lbs on me in about two months, and had me in so much pain I wanted to die. The doc would not even considered trying another med, and figured the best solution was to INCREASE the dosage of the bad drug! I fired that doctor right then and there, did some research, and found a doctor who was open to trying to find meds that would improve my condition instead of worsening it. New doctor was livid that the old doctor was so inflexible, and was literally keeping me sick, instead of making me well. New doc did more extensive tests, and found a med that immediately made me feel better. I have now lost all that weight, and feel like a million bucks. If your doctor is an a*****e, FIRE THEIR ASS and find a good doctor!!!

“Even recently, the Pope declared that same-sex marriages were not endorsed by the Church. Islam is also very homophobic. Most Islamic countries have anti-gay laws with punishment ranging from imprisonment to the death penalty. Many people in the UK growing up in such households are more likely to be homophobic,” the mental health expert pointed out that homophobia is still very prevalent in modern times.

Some younger people want to be part of the ‘in crowd’ and adopt the beliefs of their friends and peers. Unfortunately, this means that they might start taking on a negative outlook when it comes to the LGBTQ+ community just to fit in with their social circle.

Or she is very oblivious. I am dumb as a rock and i never saw when men or women hit on me. Once i took a new friend on a "date", we watched a movie together (coincidentally about a male gay couple), had dinner and went to her house and ended up watching a second movie. At some point through the "date" my friend realised that I was not hitting on her and was not interested romantically im her or asking her out, I was just going out with a friend. I never realised that we were "on a date" or that she was interested in me until she told me much later xD

“Teenagers can be homophobic as a way to conform to heterosexuality and be more accepted by their peers,” Silva said.

Meanwhile, the therapist pointed out that some people become homophobic because they are trying to repress and deny that they personally have same-sex attractions.

“In being homophobic they attempt to repress their own feelings by fighting against the source of their arousal: the LGBTQ people,” he said.

They look like they are Asians If they are Buddhists, their attitudes about homosexuality are apt to be very different than Christians. The third moral precept for laypersons is "I accept the training rule to abstain from improper sexual behavior" This means any sex without consent (rape), sex with someone that is married or engaged to someone else. sex with a child that's under legal age, This means that sex between two consenting adults of either gender is OK and not "unmeritorious karma". Although the former King, Sihanouk, was in favor of Gay marriage it has not be legalized. Cambodians are actually "conservative" in that they frown upon public displays of physical affection even between married couples. In Cambodia and nearby Thailand, that has the same religion and "values" male to female transexuals are called "Katoey", a third gender. Some schools there have separate toilets for them. There are gay and mixed bars and clubs in Phnom Penh. Taiwan has same sex marriage.

My great, great Aunt Daisy had a "companion" who was know as Aunty Marjory (we are talking very early 1900s), because Daisy was "infirm". Nobody has ever been able to tell me what this infirmity was. I suggested it was called "lesbianism" and my family were horrified. You just have to look at one photo of them together (because yeah, when you are infirm and a companion, of course you take couples pics). What I really love is that the patriarchy was on it so hard during Victorian times, that nobody even cared about lesbians, because they considered them not even an issue. As in, if there's not a man involved, it's not even sex and orgasms are impossible!

Indeed had several family friends whom openly lived together in the same houses but as children we were told to refer to them as Great Aunt [their name] and their "companion" as Great Aunt [their name]. Looking back on it even as a child I knew they were not still "pining for their betrothed whom had died in the war and could not face marriage after that so lived with Great Aunt instead" but woebetide if you even hinted it might be something other and even possibly lesbianism you would get such a belt round the head it was not worth the trouble

Lol I had two aunts that were "roommates" My granddad finally sat all us kids down and explained to us they were in love and why they can't be married(1980) we were 12,9, and 6. We were outraged for them. Couldn't understand why they couldn't be married and do what everyone else was allowed to do. He cried when we reacted that way. He watched his sister go through so much pain and he wasn't sure how we'd understand. Kids understand love that is all. It's a shame when they're taught otherwise.

Even if someone had been living under a metaphorical rock, it’s still incredibly difficult to miss the existence of the LGBTQ+ community. Pride Month, traditionally held in June (but on other months in some countries), is a time for events that promote the community’s fight for dignity, equality, and justice. It is also a time to draw attention to the issues that some members of the community struggle with, including discrimination.

During a previous interview with Bored Panda, ‘Stonewall,’ a United Kingdom-based organization spoke about the importance of Pride. ‘Stonewall’ is an organization that aims to create a world where all members of the LGBTQ+ community are free to be themselves and live their lives to the fullest.

I remember decades ago that the 'gay' community, as it was, would cold-shoulder BTQ+ folk, claiming that only 100% gay was real, anything else was somehow just playing.

My daughter is bisexual and she's invalidated all the time. Told it's a phase or she's not really queer or she's doing it for attention why if she likes women too has she dated more men. It's infuriating and so stupid. Why can't people just like who they like ffs??? None of this has ever phased me nor have I ever questioned people about who they are. I have a hard time understanding people that feel entitled to do so.

"Straight" guy here (I use the quotes because um, well does having been attracted to two different males in comparison to the hundreds of women both Cis and Trans I have found attractive change anything?): To all the LGBTQ+ people out there... you really need to stop bashing each other like this... first who made you God of deciding what makes a persons' sexual identity valid? Second the more that you bash and try to hold down each other the more your true oppressors win. Like this person above in the screen shot really you should have treated like pot head offering pot to some one. "Oh you prefer masculine lesbians? More Fems for me!"

According to Robbie de Santos, the Director of Communications and External Affairs at ‘Stonewall,’ Pride Month is an annual way for everyone to show support for the LGBTQ+ crowd. It’s a global phenomenon that unites everyone.

“Pride is an opportunity for all of us to come together in celebration, protest, and solidarity with lesbian, gay, bi, and trans communities all over the world,” de Santos told us about the extent to which Pride is celebrated each and every year.

Observant parents seem to know, even before their child realizes it. If they’re also loving parents, they don’t change anything, except becoming an angry Tasmanian devil parent, and making anyone totally regret daring to bully their child because of it. Come to think of it, parents of straight kids would also fight to defend their kids against bullies, so not all that different after all. Just good, loving parenting.

    Marco Hub-Dub

This! We’ve heard this since before we were born and it’s been indoctrinated into us every day since. The people who should be helping us find our authentic selves and validating how we express that are often the ones indirectly invalidating us by shoving the hetero narrative down our throats. There was a time we tried fervently o find examples to counter this, but they were (I’d suggest still are) few and far between. What this does to one’s self-image often manifest la in inauthentic attempts to find validation and an incessant need to prove we’re worthy even tho we “don’t have a boyfriend yet” or whatever agenda contradicting us. It takes a lot to overcome this even if our immediate family is supportive. We still have to deal with the herero assumptions and expectations in school, work, society. Until the default assumption isn’t about sexual identity being straight or sexual identity at all, we’re not moving the needle that far forward.

Every single time I visit anyone on my dad's side of my family, someone says something along the lines of'do you have a boyfriend yet?' they can never believe that me, a THIRTEEN-YEAR-OLD, isn't dating a boy yet, or even is interested in boys. Bruh. I've told them no every single time they ask that, and they ask every single time I see them. Also... My phone wallpaper is literally the lesbian flag. Like really? None of them is homophobic to my knowledge, but they clearly haven't even considered the possibility that I'm anything other than straight.

“For some LGBTQ+ people, these harms are particularly acute, and we need to stand together against all discrimination that holds our communities back, from racism to ableism, misogyny to classism,” de Santos said.

Pride Month, according to ‘Stonewall,’ is important because it allows everyone to come together and show their support, in their communities, workplaces, schools, online, and on the streets. It’s a celebration of who we are as people. It’s also a way to continue fighting for “freedom, equity, and potential” for all of us.

Not true. I took a Classics university course 20 years ago and on day one we were told Alexander was gay.

These memes annoy me because they reflect academic thought from literally decades ago. I know that s**t sticks around in the high school textbooks for far longer, but no one is out there thinking Alexander didn't have sex with guys. In 20+ years in academia - as an Ancient Historian - that meme does not reflect a single professor, colleague, fellow grad student, etc. that I have ever encountered. Literally the only time I've run into it was interacting with Greek historians - because of the church culture, a lot of them have issues with it. But in the US, UK, France, Germany? Absolutely not.

Absolutly false, Alexander was poisoned, also yes homosexuality was a thing in Ancient Greek, but it was different almost everyone had a homosexual relationship, it was normal, so we don’t actually know if he was gay, bi or straight, but no one said he was straight, you’re just making up things

It’s a cliche in the queer community that we often start looking alike. Hence the term “clones” being reappropriated from a specific style to couples that share or wear similar clothes and have similar haircuts. Even my mother often mistakes my husband for me in photos, at a distance or on the phone/FaceTime and he’s 6’3 to my 6’ and weighs 40 lbs more.

"A controversial new study claims that lesbianism evolved because it's a turn-on for men. The study, which has drawn a lot of criticism from the gay community and several scientists, says that men's desire of women who are attracted to other women drove the evolution of homosexuality in women. Researchers at the University of Nicosia surveyed 1,509 heterosexual people and a grand total of zero homosexual people for their study, published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences." These "scientists": why are ladies gay?? Oh, I know, I'll ask straight people!

The lead researcher is a well-known anti-gay academic who previously has tried to establish cultural indoctrination as cause for gay males and his “findings” are funded by a very anti-gay government and used as defense in laws and punishments against queer people. The state is manufacturing reasons to torture queer people and this is the “evidence” from THEIR “researchers”. “The Cypriot researchers, from the University of Nicosia, surveyed a total of 1,509 heterosexual participants for their study.”

Yes, but she has grandchildren, meaning she had to stay in the closet and get married to be accepted by society. Was that before or after she met this woman? If after, did she keep her “friendship” with her, or was she forced to never see her again? Did she go back to having a “friendship” and a “roommate” again after her husband died (or she divorced him)? Knowing how hard it was back then—-it was actually illegal, ffs, so she faced jail time if caught. Unbelievable now, but that’s how it was. Hell, I’m old enough to remember the awful “gay bashing” crimes in the eighties. Even when I was a kid, I related better with people as one human to another, without fixating on the incidentals of race, gender, and orientation. I always thought people who were different than me were more interesting than the ones just like me. Most of all, I have never been able to understand why some people just refuse to butt out of other people’s business and live and let live.

although in certain cultures kissing lips wasn't/isn't reserved for lovers. In case of USSR, the communist camarade kiss (on the lips) was famous, think about Breznev kissing anyone he could- the Iron Lady could bend -dispite her name-to escape it. I think they could be either 1. lovers or 2. friends or 3. camarades- it could be a gesture amongst ppl who weren't even too close. 4. It could have even been a (brave) political act making fun of the communist kiss.( Maybe even riskier than being Lesbian/Bi).

although in certain cultures kissing lips wasn't/isn't reserved for lovers. In case of USSR, the communist camarade kiss was famous, think about Gorbachov kissing anyone -the Iron Lady could bend -dispite her name-to escape it. I think they can be 1. lovers or 2. friends or 3. it could be a gesture amongst ppl who weren't even too close. It could have even been a political act making fun of the communist kiss.( Maybe even riskier than being Lesbian/Bi).

TBF they are kids... they are going to stare at ANYONE who stands out from the crowd, but you shouldn't get upset, they are just curious and want to know more. Certainly better than the adult who looks/stares and then judges and could careless about who you are.

Yes. Children stare because they’re curious, but unlike adults, they’re non-judgmental in their curiosity. Kids will ask questions like do you borrow each other’s clothes, while some adults will ask s**t like do they know god will send them to hell, and other ignorant questions like that. Not to get to know and understand them, but to judge and make themselves feel superior. They’re not superior, btw, they’re just assholes.

I get this all the time and not just little kids, I can literally see the cogs turning in their heads. I can see them thinking "do I call you mate/sir or love/madam".Used to pee me off, but now it amuses me, especially when they get it wrong.

A little embarrassed that I mistook two men for father and son - they looked alike and had a twenty-year age gap. They corrected me and were wonderfully gracious about it. We had a conversation about long-time couples coming to look and sound alike. I congratulated them on their decades-long relationship and more recent marriage. A very happy couple - certainly better partners than my married-to-the-bitter-end parents!

But here's the thing about binaries - they aren't static. There is an intermediary unity of like a string that connects the opposites - all along that string are variations between the two opposites. An example: Light and dark, there is blinding and pitch on opposite ends and in between bright, dim, all the colors, and tones and qualities of light. Same with sex, orientation, and gender. The extreme opposites are male and female but there is a long interconnected string between with all manner of genders, sexes and orientations. Middle ground physically could be either both sex organs or neither, (yes it happens, I have personally met both), or orientation, either fully bisexual or totally asexual with a spectrum between... Light and dark exist, but so do dawn and dusk...

I agree. This seems just a person being oblivious to lesbians. But i think that we should encourage people of both sexes to hug and cuddle with their friends. Humans benefit from physical contact, we are a social species. Its sad that nowadays people are only supposed to do that with their romantic partner and nobody else.

FIrst time I watched, I didn't really see Vi as flirting with Cupcake. For me, she was just trying to make her feel unconfortable (which obviously work). Later on (scene in the bed) was a bit more obvious. But still... I like the idea that they could be just "really good friend" (I obviously have nothing against gay relationship; I just like nice friendship being depicted in a show; but won't be upset if they end up together).

They went to bed together, but it still might be a nice friendship? Honey, ding, ding.

Another form of diversion or erasure from the most likely possibility. This is the subtle form of homophobia (actually, heterosupremacy) that’s so eroding and caustic to queer visibility and acceptance.

Wow. How horrific for children to see a normal expression of affection. I'm sure those toxic bigoted commenters are providing a much better example for them.

This was a pediatrician in the SF Bay Area. She works for Sutter Health Care in San Mateo California. The hotel pool was Sacramento and two women of color kissed on the lips. Other straight couples holding hands, cuddling and kissing also occurred & these straight folks came to the women’s defense after the good doctor spewed homophobic and racist b******t in the name of protecting kids (from what?) from what the straights were also doing and she spewed several f***s and c***s and whores and dykes within earshot of hers and other kids. Because foul language is ok when you’re assaulting queers and people of color for behavior your ok with as long as it’s hetero and white. BTW, Sutter scapegoated bu saying she’s an independent contractor. The reality: Sutter Health is a foundation and all doctors work for and get paid by a separate Sutter Medical Group. So, not independent of SPMF (Sutter Pacific Medical Found), but def an employee of SMG. All their docs are exclusively.

I actually feel more context is needed here. Were they kissing, like a greeting or see you later kind or full out snogging tongue and all? If it's the latter then yes, even a straight couple would be called out on.

Liberalism - so freedom from oppression is a mental disorder? I think liking oppression is a mental disorder.

Harassing someone like that is never cool. Needs a bit more details though. The disorder part is great! Given liberals support other disorders like gender dysphoria. Don’t take that as I’m anti LGBTQIA. Love you ever you want!

This doesn't belong here. I am very much a straight woman, but I had girl crushes, especially during the throes of puberty. Being human is complicated and sh*t.

I agree. I was always assumed to be lesbian by others because i am not gender conforming but I only liked boys. Ironically in my late 20s i discovered that i might be bi. Just not 50-50 more like 80-20. Sexuality is complex and variable

Hard to judge from one point of view only. The mother seems to try to be understanding and while she is a bit abrupt, she isn't completely wrong, especially since she speak from experience.

What the mum says is kinda true though but she didn't have to ask. If it was a phase then as long as it isn't hurting anyone just let it go and be supportive. It is extremely common for girls to feel bi-curious and be confused by those feelings and think they are lesbian but realise once puberty starts slowing that it isn't the case. There is nothing wrong with that, there is also nothing wrong if they feel that way for the rest of their lives. My first pash and fondling type stuff was with a girl but that was just a phase. I still find girls attractive but in a more jealousy and/or appreciation kind of way. The same kind of way you see art, piece of furniture you like, pretty like a flower etc.

You can have crushes on the same sex and it used to be very commonly known. It doesn't mean that you are gay. You might be straight, gay, bi, ACE with a crush, it just happens 🤷‍♀️ This poor mum sounds like she was really trying too 😔 I came out as Asexual to my mother who was Fabulous but never could to my father who was openly homophobic. At least the daughter felt that she could approach her mum and I hope this misunderstanding will soon be resolved ❤️

Yea, don't say that to your kid if they come out to you. Just tell them you love them just the way they are. If you are very homophobic then cut ties as soon as possible and don't mess them up worse. No amount of questioning a persons sexuality is going to get them to change it and it's only going to cause emotional and psychological damage.

I think the mother has some unresolved issues about her own sexuality.

Straight woman - never had girl crushes, and was never particularly curious. But here's the thing... woman's daughter is or has recently gone through puberty - that is the time of sexual awakening. So, if she's crushing hard on girls, and definitely not at all on boys, there is no deciding, it's done. She's a lesbian.

In order to view this as not incesty, I would view the word “girlfriend” here to actually be a platonic friend who is a girl. Words can have two meanings.

I feel that this is likely to be the safest way for the poster. It is with tiny steps that movement and awareness and eventually understanding breaks the taboo. Given how much hate there is in supposedly safe countries, people do need sadly to be careful. One day everywhere will accept us LGBT+ ❤️

That’s definitely code. Especially with the emoji. Check into allout.org and rainbowrailroad.org if you want to help LGBTQI+ folks in Sharia Law nations or Russia, Poland and Ukraine. A lot need assistance. Once you work with some, you’ll see very creative code to express identity.
