Person Has Their Parents Watch Their Cat During Their First Year Of College, Parents Secretly Give It Away
406Kviews
When Reddit user nexerxe left home to start their first year of college, they couldn’t take their beloved cat, Spotty, with them. So, nexerxe left the critter with their parents. Or at least that’s what the student thought. Nexerxe eventually found out that their parents actually gave away the kitty. Without even telling them.
So, crushed but not defeated, nexerxe made it their mission to find their pet and get it back. And with the help of the Internet, they did. Nexerxe set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise the funds needed to re-adopt the kitten, and 10 people chipped in $240, allowing the broke college kid to be reunited with their four-legged buddy.
And Spotty isn’t just a cat. The kitty is nexerxe’s friend. When their father was emotionally abusive, their mother refused to let them get help. “The only thing I had was my cat,” nexerxe said. “I moved out when I was 18 to get away from the abuse, and accepted that I would have to fully support myself in a town where I knew no one and had no job.”
Now, nexerxe works two jobs and is about to start one of them full-time but still can’t imagine their life without Spotty. “I’ll do anything for my kitty.”
Here’s what people said about the whole ordeal

Such parents dont deserve to see their grandchildren or have any kind of support in later years.
Yup. Of course, they'll whine and complain about it to anyone who'll listen.
These are the kind of parents that will say "oh, poor me, my wretched child is so terrible and refuses to call or visit. How could they treat their parents like this?" Trust me, I absolutely know. It's never about you, it will always, always be about them.
I cut off my abusive stepmom 25 years ago. I haven't heard her whine or complain at all. ;)
Want me to smear parakeet s**t on these guys's clothes too? I CAN AND I WILL
John M, they agreed to it. If they hadn't he/she would have found someone else to care for the cat. Once they decided to go back on their agreement, they should have said so and given him/her the chance to find a home. Just basic decency.
Basic decency is a very rare phenomenon.
So true. I just watched the first episode of Making It. The man's story about how he received a black wreath from his parents with the words "In Memory of Our Dead Son" after he came out as gay was just sickening. It's not just not understanding or coping, but truly hateful.
They gave birth to someone, they don't know what's like being a parent.
I don't know what you mean, Sara. Animals in nature and domesticated animals do take care of their young. It's natural instinct. A cow whose calf was taken from her right after birth is displaying enormous grief -all that torture so "people" can steal her baby's milk. By the way, there's no other creature in nature which would drink mother's milk after weaning, let alone the milk of another species, only humans are capable of such a perversion. The animal milk protein - Casein is very dissimilar from human protein, it is causing (together with animal protein and cholesterol in meat and eggs) chronic, painful inflammations in human body - such as arthritis; chronic diseases - such as diabetes; heart diseases - clogged arteries; and various cancers. - Because "people" treat animals in so wantonly cruel a manner, they are incapable to rule themselves in any civil, just manner and co-exist in peace with each other, they are even incapable to properly care for and raise their children.
Yeah, people seem to forget that their kids, even grown up kids, have memories. I know there are some people who love their abusive parents, but I think more and more, those days are fading away and people know that they can walk out of toxic relationships and leave the abuser to stew in their own juices. Good riddance, there are plenty of other people in the world who will value you.
I once noticed a women mistreating a child - a girl, I wanted to tell her: 'You are forgetting that one day she will choose a nursing home for you'. Children's natural kindness must be nurtured, not destroyed. Some children - such as nexerxe, are capable to retain their compassion despite the distressing circumstances.
Loving a parent, even toxic, is kind of natural. Kids still love their parents and suffer the pain it causes, until they learn to distance from people like that. And it still hurts even then because most of them remain wishing their parents were different and miss what could and should have been. Kind of leaves you partly broken forever...
Such parents have no interest in seeing or being present in their grandchildren's lives.

You're hearing one side of the story. I'd be curious who is paying for college in all of this. Not cool to put the cat in a shelter, but it was also not cool to put her parents in the position of taking care of the cat, even if for only one year.
I'm glad that you were able to re-unite with your beloved Spotty. Tortoiseshells are very special. I'm also sorry to hear that you had a rough childhood. You can't choose your blood relatives, but you can make a new family that will embrace you. Hugs to you.
They certainly are. Vets call then 'naughty torties'. My tortoiseshell cat is 20yo now, bit senile, but still that special mix of loving & fierce. So glad she got her cat back, hope they have many long happy years together.
20 years old? that's incredible! best wishes to you and your tortie from me and mine! :)
That is pure abuse. Torture. Why would any parent do this shit?. .....yah i know there is no "why" in abuse. It is just abuse, So glad you got your cat back. Only thing i found that works with abusive parents, is just do not have contact with them.
* edit: ...works with My abusive...
