I did actually get it dated--my mother must have put it in the wrong box, it looks like it's from the 1970s. Buuuut it's still the oldest thing in my house, and the strangest thing is that is actually what she looked like. Maybe someone drew it off a photograph.

Have a look at sketched portraits for the time. It would be completely out of style.

No one is being stupid. Like someone said above someone is lying to her. Today people wear all kinds of hairstyles but going back even 20-25 years gets you some specific looks. No one in the mid-1800s would have a high ponytail bun. It really does look more like the 1960s where the style fits. People in the 1800s, hell, even the early 1900s all wore specific looks everywhere all the time. Everyone conformed. So finding it hard to believe it's from the mid-1800s isn't negative. It's inquisitive. It's questionable. It's the Internet.

Beks Czar, There's nothing inquisitive about it, it's being a negative jerk plain and simple.

No one is saying the picture isn't beautiful - it is stunning. It's just very much not of the time, surreal or not. That makes it a bit questionable.

Yeah sorry, your great-grandmother was not alive during the Civil War. Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, but not 160 years ago.

it's a self portrait of her, and i have two other drawings she did. she-it seemed-did surreal artwork. so no, it doesn't radiate 1860s but it seems like that was her style

Omg, I looked at the photo on a separate screen next to this drawing, and the butterfly IS the same. Same wing pattern and pose: its little legs and antennae are in the same position and everything. I have to conclude that the OP’s great great grandmother *did* draw this in 1862, *and* she is a time traveler. It’s the only explanation for me.
