The United States is the third largest country in the world with a population of more than 335 million, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Here, a child is born every 8 seconds.

In addition to Indigenous Americans who were already living there before the Europeans discovered it, the country was built on immigration.

Because of this, the United States is one of the most culturally diverse nations in the world. It is sometimes described as a "melting pot", in which different cultures have contributed their own distinct "flavors" to American culture.

But as much as the distinctiveness fascinates foreigners, it also has them raising their eyebrows. This is especially evident in a recent Reddit thread, started by user 421continueblazingit, who asked non-Americans on the platform to share which of the local customs make no sense to them.

Holy s#it America is backwards when it comes to medical treatment, Ireland has free medical care when pregnant and its free to give birth no matter what you earn and you have free hospital/doctor visits if you dont earn alot or have a part time job and getting meds from chemist on medical card costs 1.50 per item and if no med card they only cost about 20 euro at most

Yeah, but if you don't how will they ever become prom/homecoming queen? They won't marry the HS Quarterback. They won't give you the perfect grandchild. They won't continue the cycle. I say mandatory beauty pageants for every child - let them know where they stand! Too many beauty pageant winners have sacrificed so much to contribute to make this universe a better place for us to disrespect this tradition. I need to know how an 18yo Sephora regular will solve the Russia/Ukraine war. Show some respect. (I didn't even mention baton twirling -useful skills people!)

It subjects those children to extreme risk of SA - your child can gain whatever pageant positives exist by having them.do debate! Yes my child's primary school (she's 8) has debate! It's fantastic. But they don't need to wear makeup & get all gussied up to learn those skills

Blame the Red hysteria of the 1950's. God was included into the pledge of allegiance to prove that the USA was more "godly" than those nasty Soviet Union commies. Which was fortified by the vile McCarthy trials that destroyed so many lives. By including god into everything, it proves to the world that we are Right! and they are nothing but barbarians. The irony? Jesus was more of a Socialist than a capitalist, but that ain't gonna stop the US from beating the drum.

Yeah, those cashiers in wheelchairs? Lazy jerks. (Sarcasm) Companies will spend hundreds of dollars on mats that are better for people who stand on cash all day instead of buying a 10 dollar stool because some "Karen" might come in and complain about how they are offended by you not standing to press buttons on the debit terminal for the 500th time today. I don't care if my cashier is swimming behind the cash register. I don't care if they are doing a head stand - process my transaction right, be friendly, do the job and I'm fine. If customers had to spend one day (dealing with jerk customers) on cash they might understand that taking a seat even once in a while isn't a big ask.

Worked at nordstrom for three months. Three months is pretty short, right? Well, reason being, I have different physical problems that make it hard for me to stand. They always put the blame on me. Told me to wear more comfortable shoes. That I shouldn't have taken the job if I couldn't handle it. How was I supposed to know? You didn't sit me down before hiring me (on the spot at the interview-🚩) and tell me that if there was nothing to do I would have to unfold towels and fold them again so that the customers will think I am always ready to serve them? I felt inhuman there. I would stand all day, greet costumers, unfold and fold things and then get criticized for not making enough sales. The final straw was when I checked my phone during work because my mother had covid and I was texting her to make sure she was doing okay. The manager comes and tells me that if he catches me on the phone one more time, he will have to "send me home." see reply on this comment

I was appalled, to say the least. Send me home? do I look like a schoolgirl to you? I was a 20 year old woman, this was my first job, and my mother was sick. I found the whole thing absurd and quit without 2 weeks' notice. You get what you give. You don't treat me like the human that I am, I won't treat you like the business that you are. I have been unemployed for 8 months now, and I still have problems with my feet, in addition to my original ones, that I developed as a result of the long standing hours. (Sometimes 10 hr. shifts.) There are some pretty important issues higher up on this list, but I am happy this is as close to the top as it is. Speaking from experience, it definitely belongs here.

What's needed is local municipalities doing their damned jobs. A big part of the proliferation of HOAs is developers being allowed to set up HOAs to take care of basic infrastructure needs that are the responsibility of the city. Like paving. And street lighting. And maintenance of shared public places.

You'll know when you purchase a property whether it is overseen by an HOA. Most HOAs are formed when a new community is developed, and in most cases, joining is a requirement for you to purchase property there. If you already own property and someone tries to retroactively form an HOA around you, you can't be forced to join. You are right, they are terrible. Mine is awful. And they have a racist legacy here in the US.

I agree that many/most HOAs are over the top of only work for the Karens of the neighborhood. But, occasionally you can find good ones. Ours, for example: we live in a small community of individual units of condos (each one being just a small house, in no way connected to other units). Each condo is owned by the individual homeowners, but the land they are on is owned by the HOA. The bylaws pertaining only to what the HOA owns. Meaning everyone is allowed to do what they want with their homes, and the HOA maintains the yards, parking lots, and snow removal. It made for easier affordability, and great for those who cannot, for whatever reason, do yardwork and snow removal.

If each one is a small, disconnected house, they are NOT condos. I own a condo. My condo fees pay for building insurance/maintenance, snow removal, lawn/grounds maintenance, water, and internet/ cable. And I only pay $450 a month for all of that. Show me an HOA that can say the same. I’ll wait

A job without sickdays / sickleave is illegal in almost every developed country. Even the amount of your vacation days is a joke. Here, nobody takes a job with less than 28-30 days of vacation. You need stronger unions and get rid of this Two-Party-politic shitshow. More diversity in politics is the backbone of a true democracy. Less selfishness and flag-waving and more fighting for the little people. Everyone deserves a good life-work balance, healthcare when sick and dignity. I read about a woman who was fired from Walmart because she was 1 day more sick than allowed. She lost her job, no money, no doctor.. in the end she died because she could not afford to see a doctor. That poor woman. And that in the so called greatest country with the best wowow freedom of the entire universe. What a sad joke. :(

And part of being a manager—-a true leader—-is rolling up your sleeves and pitching in to help out when you’re short handed. Not to mention being fair, equitable, ethical, understanding, and an advocate for your employees when upper management—-the suits—-are being unreasonable. No one seems to realize that, and apparently business schools don’t teach it.

I was an assistant manager at a garden center for 28 years. If someone called out sick I was the one who found someone to cover their shift and if I couldn't find anyone then I worked the shift. Not every company expects their employees to find people to cover for them....and those that do this are just being lazy.

This is a bit of a misnomer. If it comes down to it the boss will cover, but many employers ask you to see if you can find somebody first. It’s kind of a win-win situation.

In India, they made it illegal to know the sex because couples would terminate the girl child if known. Things still happening but has lessenned because the family goes to jail along with the doctor / hospital. licences are removed. So this is not possible in India unless you want to go the jail

In Sweden we have 235 days which can be used all at once or spread out until the child reaches 8 years old. The days can for the most part be used equally by both parents. Many parents ration their days so they take a year off with the baby and then extra long summer vacations for several years. I think this system is wonderful and I gladly pay my taxes to benefit new parents in this way.

No its until the child is 4 years old, it has been changed. And also you can not use them as you want, the father must use 90 days and you can no longer use them on weekends unless you used to work shifts. Also the 100minimum support days are $10 per day now, hardly anything to live on.

This is another state-by-state matter. In Washington State, all employees, including servers, are required by law to at least make minimum wage, which is $15.74/hr. Then they can make tips on top of that. Tips are a part of the culture still, but it changes the dynamic from it feeling like charity to feeling like a recognition of service.

What gets me is even when you pay, you are asked to leave a tip. For example, I gave a friend a ride home yesterday and she wanted to get some special coffee. They ran her card and turned the reader around and it asked "leave a tip?". The cashier makes a wage, she didn't do any service like in food service, WHY do you need to tip someone for doing the job they are paid to do? (food service, etc is not included in this comment)

All the servers/bartenders I know would never want this changed. They make far more money than they would with an hourly. It is not at all uncommon for them to make 30-40+ dollars/hour and would never see that with an hourly. I served tables for a good while and my wife still bartends.

You are absolutely correct. Right or wrong I make waaaaay more than I'd make with an hourly from tips. So, even though I'd love to see a proper hourly wage, benefits, sick days, etc, I wouldn't make the money I make now. Truly a conundrum.

There's a reason the "hospitality" industry in this country is flailing. They spent decades building an abusive employment model, and now they're stuck with it. The people who left it and found better jobs during the pandemic aren't coming back. There are places now having to close early, or close altogether, because they can't find enough people willing to work there. Still doggedly fighting against treating their employees with respect or paying them a livable wage though. Instead of addressing their own shortcomings they just bleat aggrievedly "nobody wants to work". Everybody wants to work. They just don't want to work for -you-.

As a person that literally lived on my tips. I take exception. Back in 1996 as waitress in Texas my wage was $2.30 an hour. Fed min. then was 7.25 an hour... and still is today! If I didn't make $7.25 an hour in tips than the restaurant would make up the difference and I would get a check every 2 weeks with the amount. Rarely did I ever get more than $30 a check from the restaurant, regardless of what I made in tips. This country is broken...SMH that we're still almost 30years later in the same conundrum...

At best, being a server would be a minimum wage job, and at best that's going to amount to $120 a day, before taxes? Work at any decently sized, moderately popular place, or a high end place, and you can easily make several hundred dollars a night, or more. Often in cash, that rarely gets reported. Trey parker and matt stone did away with tips at Casa Bonita and opted to pay servers $25 an hour....and those servers were PISSED. For every person working in some dive that see's so few customers it barely rates as having a job, there's someone else that doesn't want to give up their $700 in tips on Fridays/Saturdays nights.

Then he informed them that the ACA and Obamacare were the exact same thing. You should’ve seen their pea brains exploding at that revelation. Same here in Germany, the "Mehrwertsteuer" (Additional worth tax) is already calculated into the price. In comparison to the US it's also nation wide and not based on each federal state

The answer to that I often read is " TaX is DePeNdEnT on StaTe..." Right... But what is stopping companies from simply implementing the tax rules of any given state in their stores in said state? Only answer I could come up with is either laziness or simply greed

Tax tables are complicated and constantly changing. There are metros where the sales tax differs across county lines. A milk shake has milk and is therefore not taxed. A Frosty has milk but is called a "sweetened drink" in this county and is therefore taxed, but not in that other county where the milk overrides the sugar. There are variations on food and clothing that get excessively complicated. The advertising is often national so the price may vary depending on where you are. If you're upset, learn to do the math in your head. If you're worried that don't have enough money, just round up 10% and you're covered. There are far worse things in the US than sales tax.

Yeah. Only here the sales tax varies from state to state and there are numerous non-taxable items as well as tax exemptions for religious and civic organizations. so, yeah, keep doing things your way and we'll do things ours.

I'm glad to live in one of the few states with NO sales tax. Whoever came up with the idea of sales tax should be dug out of the grave and have his body fed to pigs. If I pay 10% tax on a $10,000 car that's two weeks salary for TAX. For the cheapest car on the road just for tax. Meanwhile the millionaires can afford that after a few hours or minutes of "work".

I was raised with guns. Everyone had guns, mainly to protect their livestock and for hunting. But I was taught how to handle guns, how to safely store them, and how never to pull one on someone in a fit of rage. As a former sharpshooter, I have great respect for a gun's capabilities, but absolutely no respect for the NRA, or the people and politicians who vehemently adhere to their bs.

Ok, so the 'right to bear arms - they never seem to mention the 'well regulated militia' but anyway - may be in the constitution (we, also won't mention what 'amendments' actually are) but the 'right to own bullets' isn't, so don't regulate guns, regulate the ammo.

Because where I live has relatively late primaries, I haven't had the option of voting for a candidate I genuinely supported for decades. Allowing Iowa and New Hampshire to effectively decide who the candidates will be is certifiably insane. We need ranked choice balloting, and a requirement that all primaries and caucuses be held on the same day, so the populations centers get a say in who goes on the final ballot.

Unfortunately, it seems that this time I may have to vote a straight Democratic ticket just to keep the country from going to total s**t under the republicans.

To clarify, the "side effect" listed are not necessarily an effect of the drug, but are simply all of the things that patients reported during studies, whether there was any link with the drug or not, which is why there are so many of them. They're more correctly referred to as "Adverse Events" and have been included in drug pack labels for decades.

This one I agree with. These commercials are stupid and no one should every go into their doctors office and request a certain medication because they saw a commercial about it. It's like a slap in the face to the doctor. The doctor knows what medicine to give you so these commercials are stupid and a waste of time. The amount of money these pharmaceutical companies waste on commercials only makes the prices of their drugs go up!

It didn't used to be this way. This started in 1987 with the Prescription Drug Marketing Act. Thanks Reagan. That's when they legalized advertising of PRESCRIPTION drugs. Before, you might see an ad for Bayer Aspirin, but not Prozac, or Propecia, or Viagra, or Xanax. Prozac was the first one I remember.

Our family isn't rich, but we got by living week to week. It broke us. Two years later, he spent 5 months in a Canadian hospital in intensive care before he passed. All we had to pay was for parking her car and bad hospital cafeteria food. The "greatest country in the world" only takes care of you if you have money. At 18yo, you can kill someone in your capacity as a soldier, but if you're stationed in the US, you still cannot legally drink. Okie-Dokie. However, if that 18yo soldier is in a country with a lower drinking age, the rules differ. But..., if you're under 18yo and commit a crime in the US, you can be tried as an adult. In other words, old people making old people judgments about issues they really don't understand.

Whis is also a stupid idea. Like why does Wyoming get as many senators as California? Because our founding fathers were imperfect human beings who had no clue what the future was going to be like.

I hate this! We are not a democracy, we are a democratic republic. Our votes only count in these tiny little local sections, which are controlled by gerrymandering. And there is just a 2 party system here. Many of us don't vote for what we want, we just vote for what we are against.

The electoral college is a very necessary and important part of the US government that should not be done away with. It is an intentional safeguard put in place by the framers of the Constitution to prevent the people from electing a person unfit to be president. The “founding fathers” did not want the United States to be a democracy and wanted rule of law, which is why we have a republic, or a representative democracy.

You can thank the 3/5s compromise for that. The agreement that slaves counted as 3/5s of a person for determining a state's number of representatives, and thus their electoral votes, but 0/5s of a person when it came to respecting their basic human rights.

Making you do your own taxes (= a simple declaration/confirmation because all the info is already available to them) is not a problem and is pretty common. The real issue is considering any mistake as a criminal act with supposed intent. That’s crazy. In normal countries, you literally have a right to be wrong (to some extent). If intent is not obvious, you won’t even get penalized at all, you’ll just be informed that your mistake has been corrected. You’ll be in trouble only if it keeps happening or if there is a strong suspicion of fraud.

No. I was an auditor for the IRS, and the sole emphasis was getting it right. My superviser was rated on how many cases we closed, not the tax income generated. If my finding was right, she never cared if it resulted in extra tax or a bigger refund.

I went to one once. Forced by a boss. It was so strange...more like a bible study and the pastor got up and was talking about a really expensive car he drove that "hugged" him when he turned. Then he said they are the only ones going to heaven and the Catholics and Protestants and Lutherans can take their hymnals all the way to hell with them. The rest was money, money, money and you should be giving 30% of your income to the church and basically saying your soul is in danger if you don't. Never went back but find it disturbing this church has built 2 in every county

I vehemently dislike organised religion at the best of times but why people actually listen to the ones that are very obviously money-grabbing lying scum is totally beyond me. I'm also good at selling things in a ridiculous way (It's a character). 'I love classic RnB (so I could revert that to gospel) And despite being an introvert I have a good stage presence. If I went on stage and tried to tell everyone the key to heaven was in holy chicken nuggets I think I could make it work. If I seem to confident that's only because the power of poultry has inspired me. Respect yourself and you neighbors. Don't be a jerk. Don't give your money to a church that does terrible things. Don't be a millionaire and go on TV to ask for money for God that you're going to keep(Why does he need money? Does he take US cash? What's the conversion rate? Is that something you can share a joke with John The Baptist?). Don't be Joel Osteen. Make my older lady neighbor stop calling me a heathen. Quit ruining Sunday morning television.

Most people become religious because they are born in a religious family. Then they are pushed to believe the same as the rest of the family, because if they don't they will be punished: by their god, by their family, by their community. Be sure that most people world wide were pushed into their beliefs.

Same. Back in the eighties I realized Christmas shopping was too stressful, and started thinking ahead and catalog shopping instead. It was a slower process, but if you started in October it worked out fine. Then I started just picking things up to give as gifts all year as I saw them. Now I combine that with shopping online, which now has way faster shipping than my old catalog shopping days. I still start concentrating on Christmas shopping in October. It’s nice and way less stressful to basically be 100% done with it long before Christmas.

While this is true, we also have products that don't have added sugar. It's like when people equate American cheese (which is a real cheese and it is processed, like most other cheeses) to Kraft Singles, which are "cheese product" or whatever. We;re a huge, diverse country with lots of options. Or think we only eat sliced white bread and don't have access to bakeries and even other options in most supermarkets.

Actually, the metric system is everywhere in the U.S. , just not in an official capacity, with the exception of medical drugs and alcohol ( which are sold only in metric). Beer excluded. All consumer products now show both imperial and metric on the package

Americans learn the metric system in school and many of us use it in our daily lives. The problem is that it was never officially adopted, so you have to be constantly converting things in your head, which is way too much effort to just live a normal life.

Two weeks seems so little though. In the UK the minimum statutory annual leave entitlement is set at 5.6 weeks' paid holiday, although this is pro-rated for anyone working on a part-time basis. For the full-time employee working 5 fixed days per week, this equates to a total of 28 days.

At my dad's work, PTO is rewarded by your bosses based on how well you're doing. He's so good at his job he has basically unlimited PTO. I remember when he used to take like the whole of december off (except one day per week, since he works in a team) because it wouldn't carry over to the next year. Finally, they changed that so it carries over so he can basically take time off whenever he wants, as long as the day isn't scheduled by too many other people.

Baby showers. Here in Sweden it is generelly considered bad luck to give baby gifts before the baby is actually born. When the baby is born and the parents have gotten a few weeks alone with their newborn they usually start inviting people to meet them, but one or a few at a time, and then you bring a gift.

Swede here. I would say the norm is that your closest family and friends will get a little something before the baby comes, but most people will wait until after the birth. In Sweden, we do NOT register for gifts. We buy the first baby necessities ourselves.

It's considered bad luck in Bulgaria as well, but I did baby shower with my first one, it's practical, because you need things for the baby and your friends/relatives can help with presents if they want to. If yoy do it after birth, you end up with many useless things or some you already have.

For a lot of Americans, a baby shower is a way for couples who wouldn't normally be able to afford certain things to be able to get those things before the baby arrives (over here, a quality crib will run over $1000 for a new one and up to $500 for a decent quality used one; strollers and car seats can be comparable in price, and a car seat is something you can't legally get used), especially if the couple gets surprised by finding out they're having multiples!

Too many children in the USA can't go to school by bicycle or on foot, because the roads are not designed for walking or cycling, it's as good as exclusively the territory of cars and trucks. This means that whole generations of children younger than sixteen grow up on the backseat of a car, not knowing what their surroundings look like. The YT channel Not Just Bikes gives a nice comparison between Northamerican infrastructure and car dependency and the European way of getting around.

I want him to leave when there is little chance of him ever having to come back. There are a number of reasons for this. Some are practical and some paranoid: -because so much of our infrastructure is car centric, it really isn't very safe to be a pedestrian or cyclist in many places -after a couple of high profile kidnappings in the late '70s and early '80s adults became paranoid and did a 180. Before that generations had a lot more freedom afterwards less so -there are not a lot of third spaces that prioritize children that are also free, so where are the kids going to go without their parents? -parents that don't comply with these rules particularly if they are people of color tend to be penalized by the law, meaning that others who think that these cultural norms are ridiculous are going to comply regardless

That's because we don't have pedestrian friendly towns & suburbs. Cars are a serious hazard to kids. Plus we sprawl out, making a walk to school or grocery store an unreasonable distance. Heck, Propublica brought attention to freight trains that were blocking kid's path to school daily, forcing them to climb under & over the it with no idea when it could start moving again.

Good reasons for child monitoring in the US: 1) Human trafficking is a very real and terrible problem here. (I'll let readers look up more details.) 2) Here in Arizona, a danger for toddlers is unsupervised pool access. (A local paper reported 68 drownings in 2022.) 3) Coyotes. We have neighborhoods sprawled well into natural habitat and the wildlife has little choice but to invade our backyards. Coyotes frequently kill cats and small dogs and they occasionally attack kids. (There are laws against shooting coyotes in suburbia since a stray bullet could hit a neighbor.) 4) Lately, loose, over-aggressive dogs are a proven threat to kids and small pets. 5) Northern states have moose, wolves and bear to worry about. 6) Alligators in Southern states. 7) Serious teen on teen violence, all over the US. 8) School shootings. 9) Distracted drivers may not be watching for little pedestrians ... These things happen not daily, but randomly, so parents must be on their toes. :(

Thinking their coffee is the best is a little like saying you love hamburgers but you only eat at McDs. The stuff tastes burnt and has no nuance. It’s no wonder most people get their “coffee” heavily adulterated by creams and pumps of syrup. 🤮

She held up a huge poster board in the hall that was covered with inside jokes/memes and then, when he said yes, she threw it randomly and it hit another kid in the head (he was fine, he laughed). Point is, they can be entertaining and hilarious.

Don't know the situation now but I was a waitress for a long time. We made $2.03 an hour but we're taxed at a higher rate based on an assumed percentage gratuity. When a table of people decided not to tip, or forgot, I PAID for having waited on them. Then, the restaurants started 'pooling tips', and gave away more of what I was given. (I assume they started to pay them less, too.) Eventually, a place I worked for was paying out to the bartenders, barbacks, the bussers, hostesses and the dishwashers from the assumed tips the wait staff earned.

In some states servers are paid 2.15 or so an hour bc their bosses see tips as "wages". So yes, they are paid almost nothing and have to depend on their customers to make sure they can eat. Oh and meals aren't provided by most restaurants either. Even food that had died on the line and has to be remade or carry out that was never picked up is just thrown out instead of giving it the workers who make them their money.

I work in fast food and this would destroy the cost of living there. Each area has an average wage that works. If all the sudden you pay every teenager 20$ an hour the price of rent, groceries etc will skyrocket. I just saw it happen in my area. Raising minimum wage without freezing prices on goods is never the answer. The person making 22$ won't get an equivalent raise but will lose higher % of check to gas, groceries and rent.

Not sure if it's a custom but i hate the fact that all children are expected to leave their family's house and live on their own by at least their 20s. I come from the middle east where it's very common to live in multi generational houses. You'd probably never leave your family's house unless you are getting married or they literally just kick you out or something lol. Actually many people choose to remain in their family's house even after marrying and having kids and what not. It's very normal here for a house to have like 3-4 different generations of the same family in it.

Actually, multigenerational homes were pretty much the norm in the US too, until after WWII, when couples wanted to have their own homes, and jobs might require them to transfer somewhere far away from their families. Though some families did have a parent or grandparent living with them, it wasn’t actually a multigenerational situation. More like a taking care of an older relative situation—-and if the family could afford it, that relative might have their own small apartment right there, like above the garage, or even what’s called a small “mother in law house” if the family had enough land and money.

“The Toilet Gap”: 40 Normal American Things That Make The Rest Of The World Confused The whole "building credit" thing. Not sure it's a custom or just plain stupid. The amount of money that I can borrow is a reflection of my income and what it is that I want to borrow money for. The idea that you can't get a mortgage because you didn't pay for groceries with a credit card 10 years ago is absurd. I suppose part of it is how the housing market works, it weird that if you can't pay your mortgage, then you can just drop the keys in the mailbox and it suddenly becomes a problem for the bank. Here if you can't pay your mortgage it's still your house and your problem. Sure the bank can use the law to make the government force you to sell to pay of debt, but that's different.

I don't know how many people I've met who have amazing credit and don't deserve it, who have convinced their friends/family members to put bills in their name instead. Also, some people have medical problems and unfortunately those bills can impact your credit. Also, you can have decent credit and not have any source of income and still be approved for credit cards and such. The system is flawed.

Dropping the keys in the mailbox doesn't really work. The bank doesn't want your house, they want the money. Foreclosure is a pain for everyone. After all, it is still your property, the bank just has as lien on it. A decent lender will work with you to do a short sale to at least clear the debt. You could try a quit claim, but, again, the bank doesn't want a house, they want money. A foreclosure destroys your credit worse than a bankruptcy. It makes it impossible to enter into almost any agreement that isn't pre-pay. You become a financial pariah for 10 years.

The worst part is our parents never had to deal with this at all. You just had to have good standing with your bank to get loans and mortgages. FICO wasn't invented in the 50s like I thought but in 1989, they year I was born. It's a giant scam.

Having a good credit score means the same thing as having "good standing with your bank". FICO made it a universal standard, so that your good standing with your bank could be seen and value by any other bank.

Was on a cruise once with many Americans and one heard I was British and asked where I lived. I said between Birmingham and Wales and she went on to say how she was Welsh. I asked if her parents etc were from there and she had said she was born in America. No, her great great grandma was Welsh. She had never been to wales, didn't know the capital or that there was even a welsh language. I'd asked her if she spoke the language and she goes "well obviously, I'm speaking it right now!" meaning English. I said I'd meant Welsh, and she legit said "I wish the country had its own language, such a shame it doesn't" was a bizarre encounter!

No, your great great grandfather's housekeeper being born in Ireland does not make you Irish

Unless of course, your branch of the family tree stems from an “encounter” between your great great grandfather and his Irish housekeeper. However, it means part of your family background is Irish, not that you are Irish. 3/4 of my family background were late 19th to early 20th century immigrants. The other 1/4 were 17th century colonists from the UK. I got to know my Slovene grandparents and really embraced my Eastern European roots. I still have family in Ljubljana that I regularly correspond with, and plan to visit one day. However, that doesn’t make me Slovene. I’m an American. An American with Slovene, German, French, and English forebears. But still an American.

Some of us are only the first or second generation born in the United States so we grew up with parents still quite connected to their country of origin. I would never call myself anything other than just plain old "American" though. I'm not sure why we call African Americans anything other than American either, all things being equal. Is it not the same? I'm not being willfully ignorant in asking, so please know that.

There is very much a school of thought that disagrees with 'African American'. There are people who prefer black as they can't trace their lineage.

So ancestry don't matter anymore? It wasn't my choice to be born in America.

Ancestry isn't actually important, bar from a medical perspective. In that case it can be very important. Yet many don't know their ancestry, won't have that medical information so just have to get on with things. People care about it, many a great deal, but that's different. It is interesting and fun to look into. Yet would not knowing prevent you from having a good life? Nope. No one gets a say in where we're born.

I have American citizenship as well as Canadian because my mother was born and raised in the US. I was born and raised in Canada. I don’t call myself American despite the passport and citizenship because culturally I am not. If you don’t live somewhere or don’t originate from there, you can’t really say that’s what you are. (When I travel to the US, I do so as a US citizen but when someone asks me my nationality, it’s Canadian.)

Going by where I was born, that would make me Irish. Going by my parents, that would make me half Irish and half Spanish.

While we are at it, don't ask people where are they from. "oh you are brown and have an accent, where are you from?" Not everyone likes to be reminded EVERY WEEK how they don't belong when they totally belong.

Whenever I can I actually avoid getting ice because it just waters down the drink

Unless it’s water you’re drinking and it’s super hot outside!

Unless it's winter and I'm drinking hot chocolate, I want my drinks ice cold! The crushed ice dispenser in my fridge gets used many times a day. Tepid drinks are just unsatisfying.

Don't you keep your cold drinks in the fridge? Don't get me wrong, I like ice in some drinks but my fridge is very efficient! The drink is never tepid.

This is one thing I must defend. Ice cold water, especially when it's hot out, is wonderful!

I love ice cold drinks. I keep ice water in my fridge and maybe because it's well water, it's so damn delicious.Until you've drunk ice water so cold it freezes your teeth, you have no idea how good it can taste.

Why does this bother some so much? It's just different. I like ice. You don't. It doesn't hurt me if you don't have ice. It doesn't hurt you if I do.

Yeah and we can't understand the concept of not having ice available anywhere even when you can fry food on the pavement.

Some drinks are meant to be cold. Doesn't matter what time of year it is. Do you stop eating ice cream in Winter?
