“Looks Richer Than Me”: Karen Calls Cops On “Homeless” Looking Father Reporting Him As Kidnapper
An artist and father from Southern California was out on a routine walk with his daughter when a neighbor called the cops on him, thinking he was a homeless man who had just kidnapped a child.
33-year-old Chapman Hamborg from Huntington Beach was enjoying a stroll in his quiet beachside residential area, intent on giving his wife some rest, on April 22, 2025. The father and daughter were heading back to their home, the rest of his kids awake and playing outside.
- A Southern California father was mistaken for a homeless kidnapper by a neighbor while walking with his own daughter.
- Police were called to verify his identity, and the officer was polite and understanding throughout the encounter.
- The father, who is an artist with a casual style, embraced the mix-up humorously on social media.
But things took an unexpected turn when his eldest son noticed there was a police car parked right by their home.

Feelings weren’t uneasy initially, especially since Hamborg said the cop was polite.
“He was very friendly and kind,” he told PEOPLE. “So I wasn’t on guard… I already kind of had a hint that there must have been some sort of miscommunication.”
And as it turns out, he was right. One of his neighbors had mistaken him for a homeless man and wanted authorities to confirm his identification.

In a now viral video, Hamborg explained on Instagram, “Someone called the cops on me thinking that I was a homeless person with a baby, so the cop needs to see my ID.”
He also shared in the caption that he was surprised all of his neighbors hadn’t seen him and recognized him by now, especially to the point where “this lady thought I was homeless and had a (stolen?!) baby,” worried enough to get the cops to follow him home.
The police officer arrived at Hamborg’s home but was very kind and understanding as he explained the situation

Hamborg had been wearing his Patagonia jacket but may have looked a little unkempt with his hair pulled back in a loose bun, a hole in his slipper, and his clothes stained with paint. He even admitted that sometimes he walks around barefoot and doesn’t think twice about how he’s perceived.
“I’m an artist and I have disheveled clothes and stuff,” he said. “I’m confident in who I am and my style and, you know, I’ve never been to a barber. I cut my own hair. I have no problem with it. Like I choose to dress the way I do for a reason and I’m not going to change the way I look because of it.”

Instead of making this a divisive situation with the neighbor in question, the artist has decided to share the experience on social media, turning it into a humorous opportunity to poke fun at his own sense of fashion.
He asked his followers to vote, “If you saw me would you have thought I was homeless?”
Hamborg then turned to social media and asked whether others would’ve thought the same as his neighbor

Hundreds of comments and thousands of votes agree that he did but most hilarious of all was his kids’ affirmation of such, as Hamborg turned the footage to one of his children saying, “Yeah, well, you actually do look like one.”
“You think I look homeless?” he responded. “Someone needs some beauty sleep, a spa day or something, or maybe some nicer clothes.”
General consensus: Yes, along with the agreement of one of his kids

Other netizens, however, took his side and pointed out that while his physical appearance may have thrown some people off, it would’ve been clear to them that he was just a guy taking his kid out for a walk.
“That lady obviously does NOT know how much that baby carrier costs,” laughed one person.
Another joked, “Wait, you mean there are parents out there who don’t look homeless with a newborn?!”
A third noted, “It’s mostly weird cause she assumed you were homeless and then watched you walk into a home and still called the police.”

It appears as if the neighbor who called him out never apologized to him, though the father-of-four did catch her in her car while he was talking to the police officer. One of these days, he hopes to run into her “not to be mad or guilt trip or anything,” but in hopes of introducing himself.
The bright side of all this? At least Hamborg knows she’s looking out for the kids on the block.
Some people on social media pointed out that she should have minded her own business

Wow, if you can't go walking around looking like a hippie / surfer / beach b*m in Huntington Beach, California (registered trademark "Surf City"), just where exactly can you do it? And the median household income there is $120,000 US. This is not a poor neighbourhood. The astounding level of assumptions that would cause someone to call police on a surfer-dude White guy who is a homeowner has to be jawdropping.
That's normal for LA. My sister used to get stopped in Venice Beach for walking while human all the time.
Load More Replies...Hair in a bun, hole in a slipper and stains on his clothes? Sounds like a parent.
I can't help but wonder: if it was the mother taking her child for a walk while looking tired, wearing casual clothes and having a bad hair day, would the reaction be different? Even when men are being good fathers and doing the right thing, some are still being shamed and judged.
He looks messy, not homeless. I mean I guess it's good that she cared enough to call, but it's kinda messed up, and has to have sucked for the guy, even if he's able to joke about it. EDIT: She watched him walk into a house and still thought he was homeless? That makes no sense
Am I the only one worried about that lesion on his knee? I honestly don’t care how he dresses. What I’m saying is that looks like cancer and it’s ok if it isn’t because that would be the best outcome. But could someone who actually knows him mention that he should get that checked?
He looks exactly like my friends who lived in Huntington Beach. It's the beach.
I had someone slash my tire at a park for the same reason. I didn't even think I looked that scruffy.
At some point you have to be satisfied with your own investigation and not call the cops. People need to think for themselves.
This is beyond ridiculous. The women should be charged because she had NO reason to think that the man was homeless *and* had kidnapped the baby. Two things she hallucinated because what...he wasn't dressed well enough? Have you ever parented a newborn?! I run a home daycare - sometimes by the end of the day I am completely disheveled and the nice outfit I put on that morning is either unrecognizable or getting stain-treated. Side note - this looks like a lovely family. All twinkly-eyed and humble and the dad's hair is beautiful.
The Next Door local to me is full of Karens, and … what name did we decide male Karens should be? They’re constantly asking why police are at various intersections, claiming that every store mixes old ground beef with fresh, in a tizz about seeing an unaccompanied cat or child, asking about this noise or that noise, who was walking down their street, where to get traffic cones to block off the “parking” in front of their house… oh right- they seem to have no idea how to work The Google… They seem to think everyone is always on Next Door because they ask about time-dependent things.
He looks like my dad when he got out of the Navy and living and surfing on Coronado in the 70s.
Fortunately for him he’s white. A black father in a similar scenario in the US right now probably wouldn’t still be around to tell the tale.
I am glad he is chill about it. Because, honestly. Better have 1 too many calls because someone suspects something (even if wrong). Than no one caring at all what is going on.
I believe this. She didn't like his scruffy appearance so she thought she'd teach him a lesson.
Load More Replies...If he kept his hair under control, he might look a lot less homeless. And someone asked if it was illegal to be homeless with a baby and the answer is generally yes. CPS will not allow a baby to live on the street with a homeless parent. So someone looking homeless, carrying an infant could definitely appear that the baby has been stolen.
Here’s the thing that seems to be missed… the neighbor was looking out for the child. What if she’d shrugged off her concern and it hadn’t been the father? Yeah, I get saying he looks homeless is harsh and she totally missed the carrier but me? I’d be good with her calling.
I looked like that for a while after retiring and decompressing from a nursing career in which I spent the last few years working in one of the busiest hospital emergency departments in the United States.
I lived in the US for 40 years, in various places, and even in my hometown, on my street, I didn't know who all of my neighbors were, and often never saw them. Now living in France, I only have 1 neighbor I see nearly everyday, but I don't know anyone else in my village because I rarely, if ever, see them. And when I do see them, it's because they're putting out their trash bins, or driving away.
Load More Replies...That's because it's a "stollen" baby as he describes it. It's made out of German cake.
