It’s no secret that it’s been getting increasingly hard to separate facts from fiction. With so much chaos, fake news, conspiracies and whatnot surfing around the media, it’s easy to lose your own standpoint.

But believing nonsense, aka myths, is part of (often flawed) human nature. In fact, people believed all kinds of crazy things a long time before the pandemic hit, and ridiculous beliefs, like that when you get a covid vaccine, you get injected with a microchip, started spreading much like the virus itself.

So when someone asked “what myth is still widely circulated as truth?” on r/AskReddit, the 33.2k responses came flowing in. We selected some of the most eye-opening ones that debunk so-called common knowledge that turns out to be anything but knowledge!

30 Myths That Widely Circulate As Truth, According To This Viral Thread A lot of people still believe a woman sued McDonald’s because her coffee was hot. In reality, the woman had 3rd-degree burns throughout her pelvic area and only asked that her medical bills be paid.

She only wanted that McDonalds paid her medical bills. McDonalds refused and that why she took them to court and got the $2.9 million awarded.

She actually only got $640,000 as it was reduced on appeal.

Watch the documentary, "Hot Coffee". It tells the story. The compensatory (?) went from $200K down to $160K. Punitive amount went from $2.7 or 2.9 mil down to about $480K. The numbers may be off, that's what I found. But the documentary was good and explains it.

Damn, some ordered coffees can be so hot. Some take like half an hour to cool to be drinkable. My water kettle at home cant even get that hot.

Her doctor said it was the worst burn case he’d ever seen. The coffee was at 190° F/ 88° C, just below boiling. And the whole “people can sue for anything” thing is a myth. Most of the time, the news picks up a story that some people want to sue for something ridiculous, but leave out that either no lawyer would take the case or the judge threw it out.

That's great that they did that for you! Even 2nd degree burns can be excruciating and require skin grafts. I forget what I was cooking but boiling water splashed onto my stomach and I still have a scar years later. Having clothes on makes it worse because it takes longer to get water and aloe to cool it off. The times I burned my hand/arm I could at least get it under cool water and pump the aloe gel I have on the sink with the other!

A month after this hit the media I ordered a coffee from a McDonald’s in Wichita Falls, Tx. 50 miles up the road in Lawton, OK it was still too hot to drink. I still order McDonald’s coffee with a glass of water so I can throw some ice cubes in the coffee to cool it down some.

Ye gods, so many comments from people absolutely determined to not look up any details of the case and blame Liebeck. I'll just say this: Coffee that causes third-degree burns to your skin is too hot to drink. There's a huge range of temperature between "destroys human flesh" and "lukewarm." And the high punitive damages were initially awarded by the jury because of the abhorrent behavior of the lawyers representing Mickey D's. The cartoonist who draws "Too Much Coffee Man," Shannon Wheeler, has a breakdown of the incident, the courtroom mess, AND the media shenanigans that followed, posted online in comic strip form. (It gets political, so be prepared to cry if the truth hurts.) Just Google "shannon wheeler coffee lawsuit" without quotes.

It won't be handed to you on a plate, but it will make getting a better paid job easier and may make the difference when competing for jobs, particularly fresh from school. It may also make the difference as to whether you are accepted into higher education or not. There is however no such thing as a job for life any more, so be prepared to have to look for new jobs periodically.

Not all the time, there are people who are crap at school but turn out to be excellent sales people or auto mechanics, and end up making good money and being happy with their lives. And there are people who are excellent at school, and who can't crack the real world. So good grades is no guarantee of real-life success, but it really increases your odds of getting what you want out of life... because there are NO guarantees in this world.

What you learn is school, not necessarily "math, science, history, reading" but discipline and approach to learning WILL guide you and form your future.

DeBeers hasnt been a cartel in decades, they are still a big player, but there are many huge rivals today. Also at one time they were rare, modern day mining techniques has made them easier to mine. However look at diamonds today vs back then, they are of a higher clarity, luster, etc, and the lesser diamonds are used for industrial use. This idea comes from people misunderstanding the diamond industry and how things operate there. The prices today come from clarity, luster, and other facts, not the rarity.

Many myths widely circulate as truth in our society, as this post has shown us all. And while some of them go about their ways for years and years after someone finally disproves them, other myths turn into full-blown fake news and conspiracies that can do a lot of harm.

Take anti-vaxxers, who vehemently avoid vaccines on the premise that they are dangerous and unhealthy. With the rise of the internet, they’ve organized into massive affirming echo chambers on forums like the Vaccine Resistance Movement. Researchers say that many conspiracies, just like covid denialism and anti-vaccination, are nothing new and they are all the result of fear and distrust. Think of 9/11 conspiracies surfing on the internet forums that were basically fueled by the lack of faith in the government.

Although there also has been many cases where the “missing person”, who is an adult, actually just left for a trip, to cool off after a fight, or just went to the store. That is why they say wait 24 hours. If it was a child, elderly or a vulnerable person (like WilvanderHeijden posted here) then you can report it right away.

Also: When it's a missing adult most police forces will tell you that they won't do anything for another 24 hours. If the missing person is a child, elderly or a person in vulnerable state, they will start searching right away.

Maybe you're right, and in that case, it's really sad, because adults can be in serious trouble too. And, I mean, if it's someone you know very well, then you will genuinely get worried if their behaviour is being odd and they go missing. Also, if said adult is suffering from a legitimate mental illness, that makes them a vulnerable adult, thus, requiring immediate action.

This is not necessarily a myth. This commonly happens if a young adult disappears; even a teenager. Families of mentally ill persons deal with this frequently. I was once told by police that my missing, mentally ill 24 year old could "go off with whoever she wanted to" and there was nothing anyone could do about it.

A girl was missing and her family immediately contacted the Minneapolis police. They were told that they had to wait 24 hours before they could report it. It turned out that her abductor had kept her alive for a day or two before finally murdering her. The family said that if the police had started looking for her immediately, they probably would have found her alive and they sued. True story from the 1980s.

So in order to find out how exactly conspiracy theories work and why some people are more prone to believing them than others, we spoke with Annika Rabo, a professor emeritus of the Department of Social Anthropology, Stockholm University.

“Conspiracy theories can be understood as a response to the question: why are bad things happening to me (or my family, my ‘group,’ my country.) In conspiracy theories there is no room for chance but BAD THINGS happened because of the evil plotting of hidden actors out to harm,” the professor explained.

What is more important to know is that the vast majority of people in the west who are HIV positive are on meds that completely suppress the virus and they have a zero viral load. That means that the virus is undetectable in their blood and they cannot pass the virus to anyone. Also, combined with PrEP (a drug to help prevent you acquiring HIV), you can have very normal sex with HIV people. That being said, you should always use a condom unless you are with a long-term partner, but the treatment of HIV has come a very, very long way. I know a few people with HIV and they all test negative for HIV because of the meds they take. I think it's important to take down some of the stigma regarding the disease.

Yes! And I am sohappy about this. Back in the early years it was a horrible death sentance. My all time favorite patient, I admitted him the night he first came in with fever, undiagnosed. We sat & talked about it (we hit it off immediately). He said that he knew what he had already just because of the fever. It was quite an "intimate" conversation considering we just met. The times he would come in, myself & another nurse, we loved him dearly, would argue over who was going to look after him. His last time in, the night before he was discharged he took my hand & told me how much he appreciated our first talk way back & all I had done for him with such caring & kindness. I think he knew. We are not supposed to give our phone# to patients. I so wanted too! But, I didn't break that rule. I wish I had. I would have been there for him & his partner in a flash. It went to his brain. The TX part of the quilt came to Dallas. I went. He had such a wonderful quilt with his pic. If only....😢

30 Myths That Widely Circulate As Truth, According To This Viral Thread people believe in the whole alpha and beta wolves thing It’s not true. The “leaders” of the pack are the parents. -in natural wolf packs, the alpha male or female are merely the breeding animals, the parents of the pack, and dominance contests with other wolves are rare if they exist at all.

Yes, the original theory was based on observations in a zoo, where a group of unrelated wolves had been artificially brought together. In the wild, packs are always family groups and don't show the same dynamic. Sadly, the incorrect theory had already spilled over into a lot of dog-training theories which are still used.

Also depends if you're talking Eruopean wolf or North American timber wolf. The two are close, but not identical, in behavioral patterns, and pack sizes vary.

Well there is a dominance conflict in wolf packs. The alphas are usually the only ones allowed to breed. If another female gives birth to cubs, the alpha female will sometimes force the new mom to abandon them. Then the alpha female either adopts the cubs or kills them outright.

The alpha wolf idea is left over from a study in which they put captive wolves who were strangers to each other together. So they were anxious and confined with strangers. This is what is called bad science.

If I remember rightly, there are two top dogs when it comes to wolves and travelling. They have one at the front of the pack to lead and protect, and then they have one at the back protecting the rest in front. Not sure where I read or saw it though.

They also divide up various jobs. In large packs, better trackers do more of the tracking. Better hunters do more of the hunting. Better teachers do more of the teaching. Essentially, it's more like a large, benevolent family that recognises various strengths.

Now I'm going to change and start at the top - far more variety, and I'll be down into the fruit & veg before I get full.

I am Christian and I read the bible. But for heavens sake people it's far from a primary source, its been translated many times by people who are far from perfect, and the context of what its about, and it's translation should be taken into account. Words change meaning in less that centuries. It's far from a literal and perfect document.

People are free to choose their religious beliefs and not be mocked for it. You dont know if it is true of false, same with the Quran, or dozens of other religious works. That is what religion is. You pick what you want to beleive and follow it. Dont mock it because you choose a different form of belief.

Turdle, there is a story with a talking donkey in the bible. Do you honestly believe that actually happened? There are witches, wizards, zombies, angels, demons, unicorns, fairies, giants, souls, ghosts, etc. in the bible; do you believe those things are real? If you are a grown adult and you believe these things, it's worthy of ridicule. Every time the bible makes a scientific claim, it fails. It says the earth is flat. It says the heavenly bodies rotate around earth (only the moon does). It says bats are birds. It says that if you want striped cows and goats, put them in front of striped things while they are mating and they will produce striped offspring. That's the silliest thing I have ever heard. Is that how genetics works? The bible tells you to bake with feces that you watched a man poop out. Are you aware of that?

For those complaining that this mocks people's faith, I have to give the American viewpoint. In my country, Christians will repeatedly try to force their religion onto others, often through legislation. See the recent Texas law regarding abortion, for one. It has no scientific basis, and is purely religious in nature.

All I ask is that whatever your beliefs you separate them from politics, from the education system and pay tax on any funding your particular church or religion benefits from. No one has the definitive answer, too many conflicting viewpoints so in light of that ALL religions should be removed from having influence over any government that works for ALL. Your views (whilst very important to you) should not be imposed on others. Cool? Cool.

Our Golden Orfe in the pond know exactly when feeding time is and gather in one particular area every day for their dinner. They also gather if they detect a person nearby. So whilst I have never tested their memory in a scientific way, anecdotal evidence suggests a good memory capacity where food is involved.

When it comes to the conspiracy theories we notice now in the pandemic period, Prof. Rabo said that they are not really different from earlier ones. “They involve hidden agents who are either evil outsiders or insiders. The suspicion against vaccines and the pharmaceutical companies is not new. What is new is the fact that news and conspiracy theories are spread VERY quickly across vast distances today,” she explained.

“The basic elements—the theme—of conspiracy theories are fairly constant, but the elements differ and if they do not resonate with local conditions, they will disappear or evolve into new elements,” the professor concluded.

Actually ... thick hymens -do- exist, and even imperforate ones, although those are very rare. Speaking from painful, bloody experience, I recommend that every woman find out what she's got before it becomes an issue, and having it nicked open with a scalpel at the GYN's office if it could be. I personally think the idea that hymens don't exist, or are never so robust as to break traumatically during intercourse, to be every bit as damaging a myth as the old one about it always being painful. Human anatomy is complicated, and we're all a bit different. Don't assume.

If a young woman is active in any kind of sports, they are likely to de-hymenize themselves. It is possible to be a virgin and have no hymen. It is possible to not be a virgin and still have at least a partial hymen. It also, more importantly, possible for men to stop f*****g policing women's bodies and having these stupid double standards where women who have sex are looked down on and men who have sex are looked up to. Possibly stems from the nursery rhyme: There was an old lady who swallowed a fly I don’t know why she swallowed a fly – Perhaps she’ll die! There was an old lady who swallowed a spider That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her! She swallowed the spider to catch the fly; I don’t know why she swallowed a fly – Perhaps she’ll die! There was an old lady who swallowed a bird; How absurd to swallow a bird!

I am a really light sleeper, and wake up with a start if a lock of my own hair brushes across my face. So I think I would know if a spider crawled on my face and got sucked into my mouth when I inhaled. Ain’t happened yet, and I’m 60. Though, when I was about 11 or 12, I was riding my bike really fast one summer evening, because I had to be home before dark, and opened my mouth to tell someone to watch out, and immediately swallowed a small moth. Poor moth. Anyway, bugs are still alive until swallowed. You’ll know if you swallowed one.

30 Myths That Widely Circulate As Truth, According To This Viral Thread That cold is caused by lower temperatures. The cold is a virus that transmits between people. Edit: a lot of people are saying that cold temperatures weaken the immune system and thus indirectly make you more susceptible, and while it’s true, the direct cause for common colds is caused by human contact.

Colds are more prevalent in winter. Either because the cold virus does not like excessively warm conditions or because we spend more time indoors and in closer proximity to others in winter. There are also many many different strains of cold virus and so you can't gain immunity to colds just by having had one of them.

I actually read this the other day: it's thought that it's because we spend time indoors with others without windows open. Sharing the same air means you're more likely to catch it if one person has it. And winter is darker, less vitamin D, people's immune systems are less active.

Cold virus survives better in cold weather, hence the yearly season coinciding with cold weather. But also the link in peoples minds is because we experience similar symptoms, like runny noses, when we are cold.

Back in the seventies or eighties, there was a study done about this. People were subjected to cold temperatures for extended periods. Nine of them developed any cold symptoms. However, those who were put in a room with someone who had an active cold did develop symptoms. Germs, not temperature, are the culprit.

Upvote for first paragraph - with the caveat that there are numerous viruses known to cause colds - but not the 2nd. Cold doesn't necessarily make us more susceptible to colds. I've a bit of a suspicion that the idea might've caught hold because, historically, we tended to huddle around sources of heat with more people when it was cold, but I don't know. I do know I only get colds when I've been around a lot of people.

Also, vaccines don't cure anything. I don't know if anyone actually thinks that other than script writers and video game developers. But I hear and see this so often in fiction, talking about a vaccine to cure someone when they are already sick (like on The Walking Dead). Vaccines have never cured a single disease! Boiling is a change in state not a chemical reaction, it does not change the chemical composition of the water. It just makes the water molecules move faster and bump into each other more often, so that some of them escape liquid form to become the gas form of water.

My Mom always told me that. She also claimed if you never shave the hair on you legs it will not darken. I had to swipe my brothers razor to shave my legs. Years later I had to have surgery on my jaw and on top 9f the worry about the damage that had to be fixed I was worried I would end up having to shave my face but it didn't make a difference even after several surgeries.

This is technically a myth, but since the point of shaving is appearance, the fact that blunting the edge makes it appear thicker is still relevant.

That historical armour was useless, or just something you wore so you had a slight chance to turn a death blow into merely a serious injury. Shows and movies still perpetuate this. Game of Thrones has "acclaimed" sword fights where guys casually shove swords through dudes in plate armour. Impossible. Metal is not cardboard. Even the most basic iron or bronze chain mail armour will be barely scratched by a slash from the sharpest katana. Well-made plate armour is impervious to all damage short of a blow from a specialized armour-piercing weapon (lance, pole axe etc.). Even the earliest guns couldn't penetrate plate armour. Armour was incredibly expensive. Common people couldn't afford it so made do without or, if lucky, with fabric armors (that were still very effective protection!). A suite of the custom-made plate would have cost a knight the equivalent of a modern high-end luxury car. Why would people pay that much for something useless? Armour was very useful. That's why weapons continued to advanced over the centuries and why armour did as well. It was an arms race.

Medieval knights mainly used their swords to kill people who weren't wearing armor, it was very hard for two fully armored knights to do each other much damage with a sword.

Oh armor was crazy effective. Still is, actually! Read up about Ned Kelly's last stand some time. Impracticality is basically the only reason why plate mail stopped being worn (and, of course, due to muskets being able to turn armor into a liability, but nobody uses muskets any longer).

Hard armors (Plate) stopped Slashing and Piercing. Softer armors (chain, leather) stopped slashing.

No. Softer armor is just not as good at both. Also, leather armor was never really a thing. Sure, you could protect yourself with thick hide clothing, but only if you got nothing else.

It's a myth that metal armor was always crazy expensive. Cheaply made, one-size-fits-nobody, handed down pieces of armor widely existed, especially in late medieval and early modern times. They rarely survived because they were usually scapped when they got too damaged. Multipe examples were dug up in Visby, Sweden, with parts of the wearers, members of a peasant army, still attached. They were most likely buried in their armor because the bodies started to decompose quickly in the summer heat and the armor was seen as too old and damaged.

I've also read the theory that the invaders simply didn't have a whole lot of room in their boats so they prioritized taking better stuff, but had the cheap armor buried with the bodies to make it harder to recover for the people of Visby. They had left a small force in control of Visby after the battle, so the idea of the people re-arming and rising up against that smaller force was a credible threat.

Probably not. If you could afford good quality metal armor, you wanted it to be shiny. Many examples of such pieces have intricate metalwork, gilding or other fancy things. You wouldn't slather those in paint. Cheap metal armor (which widely existed, but very few examplex survived) was probably just oiled up regularly.

The ancient Chinese also used paper armor (paper infused with resin to make it hard), which even the Mythbusters found could protect you in a sword fight. However, if it got wet it could fall apart, or if you took too many blows, there would eventually be a breach. It was paper, yet in a short sword fight, it would protect you.

Can I have GMOs with built-in pesticides? Meaning the ones hand-bred to genetically produce higher amounts of naturally occurring defensive chemicals that are toxic to certain pest organisms but harmless to humans and livestock? Because our systems were designed to be able to handle those chemicals just fine? So we can grow enough quality food to feed everyone we can on our limited amount of viable agricultural land? (I know there’s major exceptions, just trying to make a point about people who were sadly lead to believe GMO automatically means “bad for you.”)

Organic farms use pesticides and/or herbicides. Y'all need to look the term "organic" up. It's a meaningless label on your food. Just like the term "natural". Organic describes chemical compounds containing carbon and elements such as hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, or phosphorus. That's a lot of stuff, folx.

That Corsets are a lethal torture item and every Victorian woman did tight-lacing. The myth about harmful Corsets was started by Victorian men, in order to bring down women-owned businesses. And some feminists (looking at you, Emma Watson) swallowed that lie, hook, and sinker, thinking they are empowering somebody with it. The truth is, Corsets are way better than bras. If you have back pains, which many women have because of their bras, switch to Corsets. There is a reason, why it was used that long.

Corsets were like anything else, the fashionable or tasteless took them to hideously uncomfortable extremes. Like modern shoes, where most of us just wear what's comfortable, and the fashionable and tasteless are teetering around in 5" heels that have to hurt more than a tight-laced corset.

Modern corsets maybe yes are better but all i remember is when i visited a museum with traditional dresses from other eras and they showed as a tiny purse that was attached to the dress and was for a tiny perfume! They told us that this perfume was used to help the lady recover after a faint because faints were very often while wearing a corset! So I'm not sure what to believe here

There is a difference between wearing a corset (used in the same way as a brassiere and for garment shaping) and tightlacing a waist trainer (a corset used for waist shaping). 99% of the time, even historically, you're looking at the former, which didn't lead to fainting or needing smelling salts or whathaveyou, it's just like a bra. Waist training wasn't anywhere near as common as fancy scare stories say.

True. I take issue specifically with recommending corsets for back pain. While yes, stiffening the painful party of your spine may bring temporary relief, every physiotherapist will tell you that wearing corset-like anything for a long time results in weakening of the muscles along the spine. Hence even more back pain and problems. If your problem of back pain from heavy breasts, treat problem at its root! Consider breasts reduction or at least bras with better support (different fit, tighter band). Don't tinker with your spine on your own.

For most corset history, the holes for lacing used (at most) extra stitching or a ring of thicker material (say, light leather) to keep string from tearing the fabric. The tied fabric provided the support and if it was too tight you needed a wider corset, same as shirt, dress, or pants. If you pulled too tightly on such strings you'd rip the fabric and ruin the corset. Later the addition of metal hoops to the corsets (like aglets for your shoelaces) allowed tighter binding, and fashions promoted this (because many "dangerous" things are actually just the consequences of human stupidity). 1/2

Those are not corsets, but trusses. And they have more to do with possible hernia than spine.

Yeah. NO - Muscles. Wearing a corset for a very extended period of time can result in muscle atrophy and lower-back pain. The pectoral muscles also become weak after extensive tightlacing. These weakened muscles cause a greater reliance on the corset.

During exercise, there may be a reduction of up to 80% in the blood flow to the abdominal organs, as the body sends more blood to the muscles and skin. This effect may result in nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and diarrhea. All of these are undesirable during swimming.

I used to think you couldn't be in any water at all very soon after you ate, regardless of what you were doing in the water. I still remember refusing to go in the lazy river at a waterpark when I was younger because I had just eaten, until my dad explained that the rule applies to strenuous swimming.

The European "Dark Ages" People seem to love the idea that, between the fall of Rome and, like, DaVinci or something, everyone in Europe was just blowing spit bubbles and looking at the funny pictures in the Bible. Not only was there not a complete absence of classical learning in Europe during the dark ages but throughout the dark ages and medieval period, there actually was a fair amount of progress in fields like architecture, engineering, metallurgy, philosophy, theology, and yes, even science. But then again, I suppose it all ties back to the notion that people in the past were somehow far stupider than we are.

As a British archaeologist I firmly support the term 'Dark Age'. Primarily because of the collapse of written records, so we have little 'light' to shed on about 400 years of British history. It should not imply that the people were backwards, only that records are scant.

In history, we generally refer to the dark ages as the the collapse of Rome until the establishment of the Carolingian empire, roughly 400 to 800 AD. And that really only applies to central and western Europe. The Byzantines were still going strong during that entire time.

Francesco Petrarca (known as Petrarch) was the first person to coin the term ‘Dark Ages’. He was an Italian scholar of the 14th century. He called it the ‘Dark Ages’ as he was dismayed at the lack of good literature at that time.

The only thing that was dark is the fact that the knowledge of that time period was a bit scrambled. We are the ones left in the dark about life there during that time and a lot of the details are starting to filter through after all this time with all the new research tools and there will likely be many more surprises we will see shining through from the remnants of those times!

30 Myths That Widely Circulate As Truth, According To This Viral Thread The Myth: You can tell if a snake is venomous or not by the shape of its pupil (slit for venomous, round for nonvenomous). The Truth: Pupil shape has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not a snake has venom, and, if you're close enough to get a good look at a snake's pupils, you're probably close enough to get bit. The Advice: If you cannot, from a safe distance, immediately identify a snake beyond a reasonable doubt, assume it's dangerous and behave accordingly; keep your distance, stay out of its direct path, and keep your eyes on it until one or the other of you leaves the area.

in the US, pit vipers have a noticeable pit indentation. This is a heat-sensitive region that helps the snake to detect prey in the dark. To see this accurately in low light, you have to get up close enough for them to strike you (don't do this). Scroll down to the part of the article: "How can I tell the difference between a venomous snake and a harmless one?" for a good study: https://tpwd.texas.gov/education/resources/texas-junior-naturalists/snakes-alive/snakes-alive#how-can-i-tell

You can with most venomous Australian snakes, as well as the scales on their stomach (the surface that goes on the ground), but this is not always 100%. My great uncle found one that looked like a green tree snake but it was as agressive and venomous as the king brown. He had it tested and the scientist said that the two breeds had probably bred to make this.

The fact is, vitamin A (found in carrots) is essential for good vision. You can't magically improve vision by gorging on vitamin A. That is dangerous, because it is a fat-stored vitamin and you can overdose on it. However, an absence of vitamin A can cause poor eyesight.

In moderation it is fine, just like sugar, salt, etc. MSG is salt and Glutamate Acid. Glutamate Acid is used in brain function (which the body gets from foods, as well as produces on its own), and an overload in the blood stream can mess up the bodies production cycle, leading to too much Glutamate, which can cause headaches.

The first three were not lies. They are things they told my daughter and they were true. I did tell her the last one when she was too young to know how to handle some older boys teasing her-- she was like six or seven I think. It made her approach the boys with confidence and she teased them back and bit, and they pretty much adopted her as their mascot, and let her play basketball with them. So i felt like this was one lie that was worth it.

It might be true if your hemoglobin molecules actually gave up all the oxygen they carried during a run round your circulatory system, but in a healthy person, only about 25-30% of the oxygen held by hemoglobin molecules is used each time a red blood cell circulates through the body. This means that the venous blood returning to the heard is a darker red than arterial blood, and I've seen the color differential an an AV ECMO circuit (ICU heart-lung machine that uses both arterial and venous blood).

Stupid question alert! Why does it look blue in our veins on our hands for instance? Genuine question, I'm curious.

Veinal blood contains less oxygen (it's on the way back to the heart to get more). Hemoglobin bound with oxygen absorbs blue-green light frequency, so it appears redder. When it's delivered the oxygen, more blue-green light is reflected so it looks bluer.

Wait a minute. Red blood cells spread oxygen, so I guess blood is always oxygenated? Wait, since it's the red ones that do that, would hypothetical de-oxygenated blood only have white blood cells?

I have elevated cholesterol. Drives my doctor nuts. She tests every time I go in. I am, fergawdsake, 75. She finally sent me to a cardiologist. He did a MRI scan on my heart and associated veins and arteries and found on a scale of 1% to 100% for blockage I was a .03% for blockage, thus below the standard for a blockage. The cardiologist said, "evidently it is a genetic thing with you", sent the report to my doctor and she STILL insists on doing the high cholesterol treatments, bless her heart.

There has to be a reason why soldiers are now trained on shoot-em video games and why people (and soldiers) who play these games are shown to be a lot less bothered by killing in real life. No, the games might not MAKE you violent, but it would appear they make violence a lot less problematic for some people.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1878450X17300045 Many studies have linked eating breakfast to good health, including better memory and concentration, lower chances of getting diabetes, heart disease, and being overweight. It’s hard to know, though, if breakfast causes these healthy habits or if people who eat it have healthier lifestyles. The link to the article has some very interesting points - particularly around coffee drinking.

It is blue. The air molecules in the atmosphere are not, but the sky is not the atmosphere, it's that thing we see above us when we're on the ground. And the color of that thing is blue during most of the day due to Rayleigh scattering.

https://spaceplace.nasa.gov/blue-sky/en/ This is one of the diff links I found about how and why the sky appears blue to us. Sunlight reaches the earth's atmosphere and is scattered in all directions by gases and particles in the air. Blue light is scattered more than other colors because it travels in smaller waves, hence why we see usually see blue. I was told diff when I was a kid... something about the sun reflecting off the oceans or whatever.
