“We’ll Never Know”: Mom Reveals She Might Have Mixed Up Her Identical Twins At Birth
Being a new parent is exhausting, never mind having to keep track of which identical twin is which. This was recently exemplified after newborn twin girls were potentially swapped at birth. The parents went viral for admitting to struggling to tell them apart at the hospital. They subsequently opened up about challenges distinguishing identical twin babies.
- Nicole Giamundo and Jordon Smith can't be sure if they swapped their identical twins, Adalynn and Nora, at birth.
- Despite efforts to differentiate them by color, sleep-deprivation made it hard for the parents to tell their twins apart.
- 10 years later, it's still a challenge for Nicole to distinguish between Adalynn and Nora, despite some physical differences.
In January 2014, Nicole Giamundo and her husband, Jordon Smith, made the terrifying realization, while they were cradling their newborn twin girls, Adalynn and Nora, in their hospital room, that they couldn’t remember which daughter was which.
The mom recently shared how she and Jordon were sleep-deprived and, despite attempting to dress one daughter in purple and the other in pink, their exhaustion made it difficult to tell the twins apart.
Nicole told People in a new interview published on Tuesday (April 9): “We couldn’t recall which bassinet we had taken them from, and that was our way of keeping track of them.
“I immediately panicked, realizing how unprepared we truly were to have twins.”

The mom reportedly said that her daughter wore hospital bracelets, but they didn’t specify the names of the twins.
To this day, the couple isn’t entirely certain if they mixed up their daughters at the hospital, but because they are identical, it will forever remain a mystery, People reported.
“This is something we are asked about all the time,” Nicole said. “The number one question we get when people find out we have twins is if we have mixed them up.”

Last month, Nicole went viral on TikTok, amassing 8.3 million views in the video where she shared more about the mixup, including her daughters’ “hilarious” reactions to the news.
The video was posted in response to another woman who wondered “how would you ever know” if one was to “mixup” their twins.
Upon telling her daughters about the potential identity blunder, the mom, who works as a mortgage advisor in Texas, USA, said: “I did not expect them to have those reactions.”

“They both were glad they weren’t the other, which made my heart happy because that means they love who they are, and that’s the most important thing to me as a mom.”
Nicole added: “I want them to love who they are, I want them to not wish they were someone else.
“So when I recorded those videos and their reactions were, albeit funny, they gave me some peace of mind that they are who they were meant to be and they love who they are, mixed up or not.”

Since sharing her family‘s experience, the working mom admitted to having formed a community on TikTok of parents going through similar situations, People reported.
She explained: “The number of people who have gone through the same thing with their twins, or twins who now question if they were mixed up, was fun to read and interact with.”
Adalynn and Nora are 10 years old now, and although it’s been a decade of the couple learning ways to tell them apart, Nicole confessed it was still tricky to distinguish between the two.

The candid mom explained: “Nora used to have a little red dot on her nose when she was younger, and that was how their teachers told them apart.
“As she got older, that went away.
“They have slightly different voices, so when they talk, I can tell them apart.
“But there are more times than not I have to really look at them.
“They have even switched classrooms at school and tricked their teachers.
“Adalynn is now taller than Nora, so when they are next to each other, it’s much easier to tell them apart.”

This has probably been happening the world over since the first set of twins was ever born! 😂
i'm confused as to what difference this makes. if anything she just mixed up the names... one baby is called B instead of A and the other is now A. It's not like they had a medical history or anything that would affect them going forward... they're brand new for crying out loud :) what am i missing here?
The only difference it would make is their birth story because some twins will brag about who is older. You’re right though. I don’t get the big deal 🤷♀️

highlander rules. there can be only one
Load More Replies...It is a name that got switched, not the people. It isn't like she went to the market and brought back two different children. Why is this here? Why did this look-at-me person post this asinine video? Who actually gives a rat's behind?
How else is the world going to know what happens in her life? Is she supposed to write 5 billion letters and drive down to the post office twice a day?
Load More Replies...Good lord, I can’t decide what was stupider - mixing up the kids or making a video about it. When my cousin had identical girl twins 20 odd years ago, the doctor pierced their ears with different earrings and problem was solved before they left the hospital.
Really, though, what does it matter? Not only are they "equal" in the way all of us are equal, they are also "identical" and "congruent."
Why not take a sharpie and make a dot behind one of their ears? I think I could figure out a way.
I'm an identical twin born back in 1953 and I would doubt a possible mix-up of the children. My mom would always have me wearing something red to distinguish me from my brother.
I was really hoping you were going to say your mom had you wear something red to distinguish you from your sister!
Load More Replies...The people acting like you are actually switching entire children out instead of giving them different names makes my head hurt. As if it would actually change or swap someone's entire personality? Yes names are important and are toed to our identity but at that age they legit don't even know yet.
They're twins. You can't mix them up. They're both coming home with you. All you can do is mix up names, which are made up. This is not a story.
For the guy who posted the "name tag" comment: You take off the ID bracelets when you get them home. It was here that the possible mix up occurred. Taking care of one child is exhausting; this woman had two to keep up with. Short of sewing name tags in the clothing before bringing them home, this happens a lot more than you would think.
Many hospitals take footprints at birth and those are unique to the individual.
