People Accuse Girls Of Being Racist For “Refusing” To Hold A Black Girl’s Hand, Then The Girl’s Mom Responds

After the tragic shooting at Santa Fe High School on 18th May, the city has rallied around its students and teachers, showing “Santa Fe Strong” solidarity and support as they return to the school just before summer break. 10 people lost their lives and 13 were injured in the horrific incident, and it has deeply affected the entire city.

Sadly some people, instead of showing solidarity and asking what can be done to make American schools safer, chose to bring race issues into the equation. A cropped picture emerged of Nicole, a student of Santa Fe High who happens to be black, not holding hands with her white classmates before singing the national anthem at a basketball game. Naturally, somebody just had to play the race card. “But why is nobody holding the black girl’s hand?”

And so it began. Without anybody bothering to question the context and background to the story, the accusations began to flow. “Who the white girls?? Yeah they did have one job and refused to hold the black chicks hand…their racisms showing BIG TIME,” was just one example of a righteous indignation that quickly got out of control.

That is, until mom stepped in. Nicole’s mother explained that the picture was in fact cropped, and there were other girls standing beside Nicole who were also not holding hands. Nicole herself was very upset by the ‘racism’ storm the picture had kicked up, the reason she chose not to hold hands was because she was understandably feeling very emotional after the events at her school. “My daughter didn’t want to cry before she had to sing and holding hands would have caused her to start crying,” her mom said. “That’s the story, it’s nothing about race.”

You would think that was the end of the story, right? Wrong. Nicole’s mom, who happens to be white, faced all kinds of questioning about whether she really is Nicole’s mom, as well as a smattering of abuse from people whose righteous narrative had been suddenly cut short.

The entire episode showed much of what is wrong with American society, from yet another community in mourning after a school shooting, to a stream of manufactured racism outrage based on nothing more than a cropped picture. However at the same time Nicole’s mom’s exasperated yet reasoned response showed that there is hope. While some people see only division and negativity, her defense of her daughter while bringing the focus back onto the real issues, such as the healing of the community as a whole, was admirable. Sure, there are major issues with race that run deep in society. But while some people are fighting for equality and justice, those who point fingers and look for racism when it isn’t there are doing more harm than good.

Scroll down to check out the story for yourself below, and let us know what you think in the comments.

The NBA shared this tweet recently, showing solidarity with Sante Fe after the tragic school shooting on May 18th

Other people jumped in on the accusations as well

Then the girl’s mom responded to clear things up

But that wasn’t enough

Someone even doubted that it was her mother

Even that wasn’t enough for some people

The girl herself responded in a video

Her cousin also responded to the tweets

In the end, a lot of people supported the girl and her mom

you know when someone is feeling rubbish and all it takes is for you to say 'are you ok?' or 'do you need a hug?' and that person who was doing their best to keep their shit together instead of crumbling into a tearful mess, crumbles just because of the offer of help, yeah, this. I'm guessing after she sang they hugged and cried and cried and hugged. A picture taken out of context is all some people need to get on their soap box and preach their bullshit.

People need to remember that sometimes a confession of ignorance is necessary for the pursuit of knowledge, we need to stop immediately reacting to subjects and incidents we dont have sufficient information of. Admit our ignorance of a subject, seek new information and opinions and simply refrain from jumping to conclusions. This is particularly important when dealing with these kind of news stories, where presumptions idiots are causing a chain reaction of aggression caused by misinformation.

To some people, everything is about race and oppression. They never stop looking for it, so they see it everywhere. Much of it is in their imagination, of course. Some of it is deliberately misleading. In this case, you need to crop the picture to make the racist claims. Anytime you need to resort to deception or exaggeration to support your viewpoint, you need to reevaluate your reasoning.

I think some people forget that not everything is about things white people do to us. Black people have agency, and can make decisions. My first thought when I saw the photo was that maybe she didn’t want to hold their hands, although I didn’t know why she wouldn’t. At every turn I do wonder if the Black person had agency in that situation to make their own decisions. Did they have any choice or say in the matter. Sometimes we do.

I just can't understand why we have to alway keep looking at people's skin colour. I have quite many black friends but I never think about their skin colour and I don't they think about mine, we never talk about it. I have gotten racist comments from black people so it goes both ways too (I'm quite pale with blond hair and green eyes)

It’s different here because we barely have neighbors. Even in Europe you can connect to countries with other colors and cultures quite easily. We’re very isolated here and so our experiences are like tunnel vision in a sense.

i think South park have the better exemple i saw. in one episode they want to change the South park flag because it represend 1 black person being hang by 4 white persons. but the kid didn't see the wrong in that because for them it's just a person who's being hang, they didn't see it as a black person but as a person! just stop see Something happen to a black person and imply it's racism. if you think she's mean to the black kid, maybe it's right. but what you can't be mad at someone if he's another color than you? that's racism. we're all people. i honestly don't care about the color. the best friend i had in school were black people and arab people. i don't judge by the color i judge by the rest

First of all Nicole don’t let some twisted idiot get you and your friends and family upset! Unfortunately there are those people that troll the internet to try to start some crazy crap! Because they aren’t happy in their life so they want to make everyone else miserable! Why they do it well because they are miserable and want everyone that way! Since you were the vocalist it is your right to do what ever makes you comfortable. And you do not have to explain yourself to anyone! And as far as “The White Girl didn’t hold “The Black Girls” hand!!!! Really, she was singing did you ever think that maybe that may have something to do with it!!! And nothing to do with race!!!! Why must we assume there is a problem where there clearly wasn’t! And people want the worse to be! You should be ashamed! And to question her validity of her parents!!! Wow shame on the evil and weak minded that wants there always to be a race problem when there isn’t! When are you going to get over yourself!

The original question was fair but the unrelenting abuse of the town and family were not. It’s important to be vigilant of racism because it IS a real issue everywhere every day. But there’s absolutely no excuse for berating a mother who did nothing wrong or attacking children who did nothing wrong. Find out the answer first before you look stupid. That girl seems smart, pretty and funny and her friends probably are too. What kind of person would judge any of these women who are all probably great people? Everyone needs to shut the fuck up sometimes.

I agree except for the “Lefty” comments. Yes, these PEOPLE are annoying but even if every left winger in America is a full-on twat, that has nothing to do with voting left in elections. Progressive left values are good for common people - healthcare, anti-war, anti money in politics, anti-corporation, workers rights, civil rights, etc. Everyone wants this stuff but they let party stop them. Even Democrats aren’t far left or progressive enough. But going right wing just because of some shitty reactionary people is like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

It's not going to serve this girl in the future to have a mom who blames black people for racism when they were only looking out for the girl. My first thought when I saw the picture was also to wonder why no one was holding the only black girl's hand. The mom could have just said, "Thank you for your concern, but here's why no one was holding her hand..." instead of angrily lashing out and claiming that black people are "reaching" and that they perpetuate racism by "stirring the pot." I personally had experiences as a child in which white children wouldn't get near me or be my friend because their parents told them black people will somehow negatively taint them. The mom needs to be more aware that stuff like that can and will happen to her daughter, even if it's not what's happening in the photo.

She never said "Black People are reaching" she said people like you, as in the group which included a white person as well "Dey". Yeah the picture looks kind of wrong but she explained what was going on, it makes no sense to keep having a go at her when it's clear(now), that it was innocent.

People love to scream racism ... it's become a crutch of the "tolerant"

No it hasn’t. You’re taking it too far just like the people on Twitter. It’s like dumb people have no middle grounds.

I just can't understand why we have to alway keep looking at people's skin colour. I have quite many black friends but I never think about their skin colour and I don't they think about mine, we never talk about it. I have gotten racist comments from black people so it goes both ways too (I'm quite pale with blond hair and green eyes)

That’s true, same here. But it’s also true that black people can be subject to daily casual racism and after so many years of that, it probably puts you on edge. Still no excuse for the bullying on Twitter.

The race debate in America is rather strange for sure a looong time back when the whole country is built on different people from all the world not long ago ... After they killed the Indians !?.
