It is considered that criticizing modernity is the business of boomers. Older people, for example, are well aware that in the past, films were way more interesting, friendships were stronger, the sky bluer, and in general the whole world was much better than it is now. On the other hand, the modern world could be a tad bit better than it really is.

At the end of the 20th century, many scientists believed that the new one would become the golden age of mankind - and indeed, with the rapid development of technology, medicine, and the growth of total comfort, one could really expect something like that. But in fact, we are now about as far from the "golden age" as we were a quarter of a century ago. But why?

Perhaps the problem is that modernity is full of not-so-comfortable and pleasant trends. For example, recently on the AskReddit community, someone asked the question "What modern trend do you absolutely hate?" The thread went viral, gaining nearly 26K upvotes and over 19.5K comments in just a few days. It turned out that a variety of people, both old and young, are dissatisfied with many things in the world that surrounds us now.

Bored Panda has compiled for you a selection of the most interesting and thought-provoking opinions from this viral thread. So feel free to scroll to the very end, and be sure to write what you think about it. Perhaps you are also unhappy with something that we missed, in which case we definitely have to know!

I prefer to think of it as "consequence culture". It's true that people change, and making a rude joke 20 years ago shouldn't be the end of someone's career. But if someone shows a consistent pattern of negative behavior over many years with no evidence of growth (like being an unapologetic racist) it's fair for the public to decide they don't want to support that person any more. And in most instances the person isn't actually canceled- people like JK Rowling are still mega millionaires with fans all over the world. She still has the support of her publisher and Warner Bros. Nobody is actually canceling her.

But the post specifically said "something they did 30 years ago". If they have not broken any laws and said something ignorant years ago that they regret, they do not need to be cancelled now. If they are still unapologetically racist, sexist, or something more than rude then yes, they need to have something happen to them.

There's nothing wrong with losing interest in a celebrity or public figure who has done something you vehemently disagree with...BUT...some people are far too invested in what celebrities say or do online. Any misstep or snippy comment someone makes while in a bad mood could ruin their career. It's just too overblown. People need to get life of their own and stop obsessing over damn post online. Who freaking cares?

In my country 20 years ago: 16y/o "I'm gonna buy a case of beer and a pack of cigarettes!" Back then it was perfectly normal *and* legal. Now they have to be 18 to buy both. In 10 years time it'll be illegal to smoke at all. In 15 years time you're going to cancel this person because he smoked at 16 and was open about it? Not only do people change, but also what's socially acceptable. We've got to stop looking at the past with today's eyes. Yes we did things in the past, that's now unacceptable. But it is *not* a reason to judge us now.

That isn't the same thing at all. Of course laws change. Cancel culture is blocking or excluding someone for what is viewed today as a socially unacceptable opinion, usually a current opinion but it is sometimes the past. Who has been slammed for a law around drinking or smoking that they followed in the past but today would be illegal because the goalposts moved?

Cancel culture to me donates how afraid people are of other opinions. They clearly feel threatened. Probably because, as children, they mollycoddled and don't understand how to deal with situations where there are either perceived or actual threats.

Or...they do not want to give their money to someone who is a bigot. Period. I dont care if someone thinks that people like me are inferior...have that opinion all you want...but do NOT whine about "cancel culture" when I refuse to go to your place of business, support your projects and actively encourage others who may find your views disgusting, to do so. You act as if because a person has an opinion, others have to bend over and take it. I was not "mollycoddled"...but if I find that you hate Black people, hate women, hate gays...HELL NO I am not patronizing anything having to do with you..."differing opinion" or not.

Slamming people for not agreeing with what's supposed to be "politically correct". We don't have to tolerate aggressive or offensive behaviour, but every person has the right to think what they want. We must respect everybody, but we are not obliged to agree with them.

However, "cancel culture" often has nothing to do with years ago. You see people complaining about "cancel Culture" when it digs up things that were posted two years ago. "I was younger then, I'm older and wiser now, after all, that was two whole years ago. Or the person who has continued the behavior over the years (looking at you Bill Cosby). Or the right wing preacher who insists LGBTQ people are disgusting and sinful (while they themselves have lived that life secretly). Very few of the things people have been canceled for are from 30 years ago, or even 20. Also, for me, the issue also relates to contrition and acceptance that what they did was wrong. If 30 years they treated all women employees as serfs and has never really admitted and accepted that it was wrong, then damn right I will cancel your a*s. And" Boys Will Be Boys" or It's "Only Locker room talk" is NOT accepting that YOU were wrong.

exactly! So often people insist they've changed but they won't apologize because that's not who they are now. They still did it, so we can still hold them accountable and expect them to deal with the consequences. Screaming "cancel culture" at everything is just guilty people trying to get an easy way out.

Ummm this isn't cancel culture. Cancel culture is being censored online because you don't like their opinion. For example, being kicked off twitter because you don't agree that men should be able to call themselves a woman and use a woman's bathroom.

Unless they are the same. People, especially politicians, need to clarify what has changed for them and ideally why. So we can understand that they aren't still making decisions using the thoughts or beliefs that lead to bad choices.

But most of what is called "cancel culture" (your choice of title) involves thing much more recent than thirty years ago. Much of it is in the here and now. People don't always change, unfortunately. And some change for the worst. And if you think thirty-year-old actions shouldn't matter when evaluating someone, I'll give you two words - Bill Cosby.

Or even hundred of years ago. It was a different time and different morals then. It also annoys me that they cherry pick who they pick on. BLM in the UK target place linked to those who made money through slavery, but failed to do the same to a place linked to Shaka Zulu who sold his own people to slavery!!!

It’s really unfair to look at or judge the past through modern eyes and sensibilities. There’s a quote by LP Hartley that says, "The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there”, and it’s so true. The past is a whole different set of context and sensibilities, shaped by personal experiences and zeitgeist of that time—-in the full context of that time. That should always be taken into consideration before judging our ancestors or ourselves back in the (very different) day.

The problem is even the " context they were born into and lived in" had people who KNEW those things were wrong and fought against it. Take the Abolitionist Movement during American Slavery. They lived during the SAME "times" as everyone else...yet completely understood that owning, abusing and killing people due to their skin color was wrong. If THEY could understand that...why so many excuses for those who refused to?

Couldn't agree more. How can you cancel out parts of history because they are not PC in today's world. If it wasn't for that history then we wouldn't be where we are. Also is is not counter productive in the sense that, by cancelling certain events/people they are cancelling everything that those events/people went through to achieve equality etc. I would also love to see these people with these views in 20 yrs time when they have really lived through life/hardships and reality and see what they think then... it grates on me and as I get older I find it harder to keep my mouth shut.

Oh, I hate this too! For some reason the world expects people to apologize for the rest of their lives if they do something wrong or stupid. We make a mistake, apologize if appropriate, learn from it, move on. In my opinion, that is one of the best ways to grow as a person. I'm in my 40's and if someone reminded me everyday or 'cancelled'/gave up on me because of ridiculous things I did when I was young and stupid, man, I may as well just pack it in and give up right now. People change. We're SUPPOSED to.

There are two times I disagree with cancel culture: 1. Someone said or did something a long time ago that they wouldn't do or say today. Very often we said and did things 30 years ago that were common back then, that today we realize are not appropriate. But a lot of times, we didn't think of that 30 years ago. Stop judging what people did 30 years ago by TODAY'S standard. 2. Cancelling people without facts or evidence. Cancelling people because someone said they did something. I've seen a number of examples where people lost jobs, lost whole careers, were destroyed in the papers, and everybody piled on ... until it turned out they didn't actually do what they were accused of. Innocent until proven guilty still needs to count for something.

I agree that people shouldn't be held accountable for what they did when they we young and dumb or for what they said on their worst day. We all should get second chances. However, canceling a politician or business for something they're actively doing or saying is just boycotting.

This term gets used incorrectly all the time. While I agree that getting crapped on for something that happened a decade ago is terrible. Most cases the ones calling cancel culture are the people on news outlets and writing books. Last time I checked, if you were canceled (think Brendan Fraser) then you'd disappear into the void. Most the time this happens to victims and its nice to see when that changes

If they are truly apologetic about it and have changed, then yes. That's the difference between punishment and correction. Punishment is just a way to make someone feel bad about what they did without allowing them to make it right, correction is making them feel bad about it until they change, then allowing that newly learned person to move on with their life.

They only cast people to make the news more popular by finding cast that make you think “I wish I could hand out with them”.

NEWS NEEDS TO BE A NEUTRAL PLACE TO GATHER INFORMATION TO MAKE A DECISION FOR YOURSELF. It’s not the f*****g Wendy Williams Show. We don’t care how the anchor feels about it. WE WANT FACTS AND NEUTRAL INFORMATION!

As a dental hygienist, I do oral cancer screenings and part of that is palpating the lips- augmented lips feel very different from natural lips, not in a good way. Natural lips are consistent in feel with no discernible lumps, and should be soft, elastic and slightly firm. Augmented lips actually feel like there is a hard rope running inside the length of the lip or tiny pearls deep inside when you palpate them (depending on how they're augmented). It's not pleasant to feel- I always wonder how it must feel to kiss someone with that.

Even cars are going subscription model. BMW calls it “Functions on Demand”. If you want heated seats, you can pay for a subscription. You can subscribe from a month, a few years or unlimited. Though I’m pretty sure when someone buys that car second hand again, an unlimited subscription won’t be transferred to the new owner… they will have to buy unlimited again. Just like how Tesla has been deactivating the Ludicrous package from the previous owner so that the next person has to pay again.

You have to hustle! You're sleeping at 3am? WEAK...The Rock is up at 2am. You're having lunch at 1pm? HAHA...you're wasting time to grind. You're cooking dinner with your wife at 6pm? PATHETIC...the only grind you're doing is the pepper shaker. You're trying to get 8hrs of sleep? NO WONDER YOU'RE NOT ME...I hire people to sleep for me.

Person Asks A Question "What Modern Trend Do You Absolutely Hate?", And 30 People Online Deliver Giving out more personal info than necessary...

Every online account wants my phone number, email, gender, full name, address, marital status etc.

I want to download an app and it wants access to everything. The app can take a picture, now i want access to your complete gallery, contact list and call history.

I go to a physical store to buy a computer and they want my zip code.

I call customer service and they will record the conversation. Not even optional....

I stopped giving my email and phone numbers out to retail staff after learning Canada's Michael's rewards are non-existent. We're not collecting points nor are we able to use them. It's been a few years and staff still don't know when or if we're getting rewards for Michael's arts and crafts. But they still ask for your email address with every purchase. I just say I'm not bothering anymore. Recordings for customer service is only really for training purposes. When new hires are being trained the managers will show examples from real calls (edited to leave out the person's identity of course) and will use good and bad ones. It's also to ensure the reps are doing their job and if there's any discrepancy they have the recording to refer to. Call centres are not distributing these recordings to other 3rd party companies unless it's a client and there's a legal warrant in obtaining that recording. That's all.

Person Asks A Question "What Modern Trend Do You Absolutely Hate?", And 30 People Online Deliver **"We need to normalize [X]"** when X is something completely trivial and irrelevant, like going to the movies alone.

Whatever the *majority* of people does will be considered normal, deviations from it are what's outside the norm. If you need everything you want to do outside the norm to be "normalized", that's a you problem, not a society problem.

People don't care. Just do your thing. People *really* don't care. And if some do, they're just random strangers, so *you* shouldn't care.

At first I thought they were saying going to the movies alone shouldn't be a normal thing. But I get what they're saying at the end part. Basically, we shouldn't have to emphasize how normal a harmless, mundane activity is just because it's not wildly popular.

Takes me out of the moment and sight lines are bad enough without everyone holding their phone over their head.

Apart from taking a picture of yourself or friends, when are you ever going to either watch that video or picture again? Like really? I remember recording fireworks once way back and I've literally never watched it.

I'm plenty old enough to remember being good friends with people and having no idea how they felt about political issues or for whom they voted - it just never came up.

I grew up in a very small Florida town. The poll workers would tell anyone who would listen what political party you were. Less than 10% were not Republicans. My family was part of that 10% and we were confronted by it day after day. I heard about JFK's assassination from a classmate as I was walking home. " YAY, Kennedy is dead." We were 7.

Just off the top of my head:

* Ignorant echo chambers
* The desperation of attention or clout
* the views/follows/friends obsession
* False information
* trolling

I'm sure there is more.

Even when you invent something and try to make it open source to share it, some company may well try to patent it out from under you.

Person Asks A Question "What Modern Trend Do You Absolutely Hate?", And 30 People Online Deliver Everything is done for profit. You cant find amateur YouTube videos anymore. You know those 30 second-2 minute YouTube videos from 12 years ago titled “guy does…” or “dog wants..” that were in 480p and have 8 million views? Type in anything like that now. All you get is “top 10” videos made by studios that aren’t entertaining in the slightest

Monetization not creation. I have no problem making money of your content but content needs to be first. You deserve the money for good content.
