Finding a new place to live in is quite a task in itself, but for some people, the struggle doesn't end there. There are landlords who create such a toxic environment, their tenants' everyday life becomes a neverending misery. From installing secret surveillance cameras to ignoring ceiling leaks, these greedy bastards are full of dirty tricks.
Bored Panda has compiled this list to prove that you should always remain skeptical when hunting for an apartment. One thing's for sure, though, those sly foxes are definitely know how to save a penny.

So My Friend's Landlord Thinks This Is No Big Deal
Fungi. Showing there is a serious problem with a leak behind there.
Load More Replies...Advice for American tenants: Get a lawyer, have them send your landlord a letter stating you’re withholding rent until the issue is resolved, and set up an account for you to deposit your rent payments in. Then wait for your landlord’s reply. You have a right to withhold rent if your landlord doesn’t keep the property up to code—-BUT you can’t just do it on your own. You need legal backup. I wish you luck.
Good advice thank you for that! I don't rent but might someday
Load More Replies...Please move as soon as you can, if you haven't already. I developed pneumonia from a damp flat and have had problems ever since. I should have moved out as soon as I realised there was a damp issue.
^^^^^this is serious! My mum recently developed a fungal infection in her lungs because of damp conditions and when I was small, there was a *huge* amount of this fungus called dry rot under my room. I STILL have lung issues from it.
Load More Replies...Forget the mushrooms, that entire wall/ceiling has serious water damage/leaks. You can get really REALLY sick from that. The mold and mildew alone can be serious dangerous to your health, especially if it is black mold. The mushrooms release spores and most mushrooms are poisonous so there's that too.
Whatever you do DO NOT RENT from SELMA LEWIS in Bronx, New York. She's a landlord from hell.
Moved in to an apartment in July, by Fall/Winter I had mushrooms growing through my carpet by the sliding glass door. Couldn't believe it. Of course my plants really liked the place with ALL of the moisture! My 3yr old (at the time) daughter and I finally moved out after her year+ of constant monthly ear infections and my constantly missing work. Wish I had reported the complex to the health department. At the time though I was just glad to be moved out of there and that my daughter wouldn't have any more ear infections. My boss was starting to not be too happy about my absences. Finally when it was time to move I mentioned to my superior that my absences should be a thing of the past....had to call in that next week after moving. My daughter had the chicken pox!!
However, even the worst landlords have to try real hard to come close to Steven Croman. He spent decades flipping rent-controlled Manhattan apartment buildings, buying them cheap and having his employees remove the apartment's occupants. Croman's employees referred to the tenants as 'targets,' and were competing to push out the most as they would receive a bonus for each tenant they forced out.
My Landlord Pretended To Do Work In The Flat But Ended Up Installing This 360° Wifi Surveillance Camera Which Also Records Audio Without Telling Me About It

Load More Replies...Yes, that was the first thing that struck me - he didn't even try to hide it!
Load More Replies...Well, that would be illegal in most of the EU, anywhere in the USA (I rented my old house out, it has cameras but the system was disconnected as required by law...besides, the cameras were for my home use and after I moved out the tenant was welcome to use it without me having access, they were not installed to spy on them. I later sold that house with the cameras still installed), and I believe Canada and Mexico both would have laws against this too. In fact, nearly every country that is not communist, socialist, or dictatorship would likely view this as illegal. Edited: EE changed to EU
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO0MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMmmmGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGggggggggggg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111111
always look for cameras. Landlords often think they have the right to invade your privacy just because you're living on their property
When the 'targets' refused to move, Croman enforced harassment. He turned their buildings into dangerous construction sites, refused to make repairs, and cut off heat, electricity, and hot water. If that wasn't enough, he ordered his companies to file baseless lawsuits against the residents. One tenant, for example, was brought to court 11 times, even though she was not behind on the rent; another tenant racked up $240,000 in legal fees.
That Awkward Moment When Your "Thermostat" Is Actually Just Hanging On A Nail, And Doesn't Control The Temperature Whatsoever. Shout Out To The Best Landlords Ever
It's a wireless thermostat that controls wherever you put it. Genius
I honestly wish that your description of American land lords. They suck here also! I complained daily about the the bathroom walls being sad and crying every day and about the amount of mold that joined our family and caused health trouble and finally the ppl upstairs wanting to visit thru our roof and from midnight until 5:00AM tried ignoring my begging and the cops asking.
If tenants continued living in the apartments, Croman would call Anthony Falconite. The retired police officer would pose as a repairman, a building manage or an inspector to get into people’s homes. Once inside, he would come up with an accusations, telling tenants they were occupying the units illegally. Falconite would demand their IDs, and take their photos without permission.
Landlords Didn't Believe Me When I Tried To Tell Them We Had A Slug Infestation. Said They've Never Heard Of Such A Problem
The division to halves, fourths etc tells me the measuring tape is in inches. That makes the measured slug a whopping 16,5 cm. Heck, burn it with fire!
I was creeped out, more when I realized those weren't centimeters but inches!
Load More Replies...Get the same problem in my kitchen during summer. Damn things can squeeze through the tiniest of gaps in my door. Thing is they're not stupid; they only come in at night and are gone by daylight. But, because the little sh#ts eat EVERYTHING I try to grow in the garden, I once threw salt on one. Never did that again, for all their faults it truely was a horrendous way to die.
My husband was out of town once and I was horrified to find a massive slug had made it's way through the dog door into the kitchen. My young boys, 8 & 6 yr old twins, laughed at me as I squealed and dithered about what to do. As one of them told me to "man up" and deal with it I turned and asked if any if them wanted to make an easy $10...my eldest bravely entered the kitchen with broom and dustpan only to run out of the kitchen squealing even louder than his momma. He's now in his 20's and we still laugh about it. Of course I ended up manning up because the alternative (leaving it) was too horrific to imagine. But I'm still traumatized, lol. And no on offered me a penny.
At least they are sloooow and easy to catch...unlike house Centipedes >:(
If you mean the ones with spider legs, than yes, those are a true nightmare.
Load More Replies...After his tenants were gone, Croman ignored construction laws and performed work without permits more than on 175 occasions. Eventually, Croman’s shady methods drew the attention of officials, and he was charged with grand larceny and tax fraud. In 2017, he pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay a $5 million tax settlement and $8 million to his former tenants. He was also sentenced to one year in jail.
My Landlord Finally Installed A New Gated Entryway. I Feel So Much Safer Now
well. At least you would be safe from a robber on the wheelchairs :D :D
But the rocks on the side are lava & hidden laser beams are protecting the gap on the side
My Landlord Sucks
This is a structural / safety issue. If reported to the local government (or relative department), this could mean that the property would be deemed uninhabitable, and needing to be evacuated until repaired. The costs of moving etc, should theoretically be covered by the landlord.
I feel like this was the landlords attempt to mitigate damage in the short term, and that I get; but yeah, no one should be living there until city engineer or equivalent can inspect.

I've Been Arguing With My Landlord About Water Seeping Into My Apartment For 2 Months Now. Found This Little Guy Today

Mold is a SERIOUS issue in most dwelling. It's a serious health hazard. Not only does it affect your health (energy, hormones, brain), it can kill people who are either babies/small children, the elderly, people already sick with a low immune system, or animals. It's called mold poisoning. I have a link if anyone wants it.

Luckily it's being held up by the Lead-based, asbestos ceiling

It's called mold poisoning. I have a link if anyone wants it. Most gov'ts will NOT acknowledge that mold is toxic. If they did, 80% of all dwellings & even office buildings & schools would have to be fixed.
That is actually black mold. According to studies, about 25% if the population is allergic to black mold. I am HIGHLY allergic and if I'm around it, I will not be able to breathe within about 15 mins.... Yes, even a small amount. And even though studies claim that it's only 25% of the population that's allergic, about 75% of the people that I know also have the exact same allergy! So I would tend to believe that that 25% is extremely off!!! Black mold can cause ALOT of health problems for anyone, especially babies, the elderly, and anyone that already has asthma or a compromised immune system.....
Holy sh*t yes that is mold and it's dangerous. Over time it'll do damage to your lungs as you breathe in the spores, and it'll also do damage to the house/apartment as it weakens the material it's growing in.
Landlord Decided To Turn Down The Heat Today In My Mn Apartment As It Reached -40°. But The Idiot Must Have Forgotten He Pays My Electric And Doesn't Realize That I Value My Comfort Over Safety Or Energy Conservation
I remember this story.. The heat turn down was at request of the energy company, so they could have every home not-freezing due to shortage on the grid or gas pipes. They had to be turned down to 15C (which is not warm, but above freezing). It was not the landlords idea to do this. This was an area-wide thing.
15C is definately not cold. My house would get down to that regularly in the winter. A little chilly, but nothing a sweater wouldn't fix.

These costs, should be included in the quarterly Strata fees that all property owners should pay..... unless the entire complex is owned by one person, and they're just being a tight-a**e.
Even if they're being a tight-a*s, this can't be ADA approved, can it?

Load More Replies...This is illegal. It violates the ADA as it prevents equal use of the facilities. https://www.ada.gov/criminaljustice/cj_complaint.html
*still*, which means they can charge for them someday!
Load More Replies...This is very illegal. This should not be included the rent or whatever. This is illegal. Full stop. From how the date is written, this is clearly in the US, which means the elevator falls under the ADA. The ADA guarantees full and equal access and paying for an elevator is not full and equal access.
I guess those in wheelchairs have no choice...they can't use the stairs.
In Australia this would have to be stated in your rental lease agreement. Otherwise it's illegal.
My Landlord Is Super Serious About Fire Safety
Well Full Name, speaking as an Architect. Yes, this is illegal, at least in the States. The existence of the cabinet suggests its a construction type that requires fire egress paths and probably fire rated egress paths. In those instances, you have to have fire extinguishers. And in case you are wondering, its the International Building Code, of which all building codes are based.

Welcome To Renting In London! My Landlord Has Just Put Our Thermostat In A Cage
Candle beneath it: Heat goes down. Icecubes on top of it: Heat goes up.
Speaking from experience or really good with science? And how often would you have to perform that to make it last, say a few days?
Load More Replies...In college, this was common- I visited a friend with these- I showed them how to fill a ziplock bag with either hot or iced water, cover most of the thermostat with it (need a little airflow) and make it trigger either cooling or heating, respectively. For really hot places, a heating pad set low and placed carefully would give continuous relief, ditto with freezable cooler bricks for cold places. Don't be too extreme, the landlord would notice otherwise. Science!
Seriously, someone please help me out. I have to pay for what I use, why do the landlords want to meddle with that? Why do they care at all?
Load More Replies...I had a landlord that did this. When it got to cold for me and my two babies I tape a bag of ice over the top and when the temp went down inside the box the heat came on. There is more than one way to deal with a cheapskate landlord!!!

My Friend Asked Me If This Message From Her 53-Year-Old Landlord Was Creepy
Run. now. Run, and never look back. This is HIGHLY ILLEGAL for him to be taking photos of you without permission etc, within this context of him being your landlord. I'd be changing the locks, and looking for hidden cameras now. Seriously
What I don't get is why he told her. Was he hoping she'd be flattered?

I never ever allowed my landlord in my apartment unless I was there to supervise. In the US, a landlord is not allowed to enter an apartment unless the renter gives permission, and then can only complete whatever installation or repair was OK’d——it’s not blanket permission to snoop or take pictures. Yes, she did give permission by text, but only for installation of a replacement microwave, nothing more. This guy is completely out of line and should be reported. ASAP. Remember, he has a key to your home, and has broken your trust that he will not invade your privacy further.

Landlord Fitted A Shower Head Holder, Perfect For When I Finish My Shift At The Chocolate Factory
That's luxury. Wash your hair while sitting on the floor of the bath. I'm being ironic.
What's the problem here? It's clearly meant to be used when you're sitting in the bath? This is a perfectly normal bath shower head.
The bath at my old flat was so shallow in depth it wouldn't even cover a 2 pint container of milk. I have the photos to prove it. It was like trying to get clean in a puddle. And they refused to put a shower in, or to install a new bath, despite it clearly not being fit for purpose. This article is making me realise I really haven't been complaining unduly - you know, when you have a litany of issues, with different companies and landlords, time and again, you start wondering 'is it me, are my standards just too high for where I'm at'... Yet now seeing these, I've had to deal with a number of similar things over the last 8 years (1 flat run by housing association, and 1 rented room within an HMO, that's now had 2 landlords and 4 lettings agents involved in the time I've been here). At the current one, we still don't have heating that works, we have leaks in the kitchen getting more mouldy by the week in this weather, electric sockets that trip, spark and short on a whim & more.
That's in place of a beeday. That's for washing your bottom. There should be one higher up for your whole body.

There's a phrase in landlord-tenant law - I can't bring it exactly to mind, something like "warranty of serviceability" e.g. 'fire extinguisher' means WORKING fire extinguisher, 'pool' means a WORKING pool - that is, they function as intended, or as a reasonable person would expect.
Seems to me there should be a corresponding reduction in rent. Compare rent on apartments as similar yours as you can find, with and without pools, and ask to pay accordingly (even if your rent is a really good deal, ask for a reduction matching the average percentage of difference between your comparables). The lease—-in other words, the signed contract—-should indicate the apartment comes with use of a pool. Save all papers and all types of correspondence, and write down all conversations while still fresh in your mind, with dates and times noted. If the landlord won’t budge after you show them your research, then it’s time to lawyer up, and both saving and documenting everything will help your case greatly.
Shouldn't they have done a tour of the property before moving in/signing a lease? It's a definite bummer, but was their choice to still move in.

Load More Replies...It's not his job to clean it, not to mention that the health dept isn't concerned with a pool. If they want to use the pool then they can clean it, it's not a landlord's job.
Load More Replies...This is not a single dwelling house. This is a multi dwelling unit. It is 100% the landlord's responsibility to clean and maintain the pool. Landlord also must provide adequate safety, including a fence and warning signs that no lifeguard is on duty, etc. If the landlord is unable or unwilling to do this, then it is 100% and then words responsibility to properly drain the pool, and safely secure a semi permanent cover over the pool, or permanently fill it in.
I would hire a pool maintenance guy stat! You'll find the money for it. Everyone who lives there can chip in

We Asked Our Landlord For A Bigger Table. He Built Us This
I don’t understand how a table is the landlords responsibility unless the place already came furnished (which isn’t common where I live).
even if it was furnished, changing the furnishings due to the preference of the occupant is not the landlord's job.
Load More Replies...Well people, shockingly enough as it might be for you, it's not really that uncommon to rent furnished housing. Both in the US, UK and SWE. Just makes it easier not to drag heavy furniture around when you're only signing up for a 12 month contract AND the landlord does need to oblige if the furniture is not what was agreed. This is just s****y craftsmanship.
I call b.s. on this one. Why would a landlord have to give or fix a table for you? I get some are furnished but I would just buy my own if you don't like what was provided to you.
The landlord has no obligation to provide you with furnishings, unless specifically stated in the lease agreement. Even under that circumstance, lease agreements with furnishings cover the existing furnishings, not new ones. You sound like s****y tenants.

Agreed. We had an infestation of larvae in my building when I was a teen. I Have Been Pressing My Landlord About The Damp And Mould Issues In My House For Over 3 Months Now And I Don't Know What Else To Do
Get out now. If they release spores they WILL end up in your lungs, which happen to be warm and moist, which mould loves
what you do, is put your safety as a priority, and do everything possible to move out ASAP. Your life is worth more than waiting for that idiot to grow up
Report them to Environmental Health if this isn't being resolved. This is in the UK and you can take your landlord to court if necessary. There are recently implemented laws regarding 'fit for habitation' so worth visiting Shelter's website or going to the Citizens Advice Bureau.
Also, you should be part of the Tenancy Deposit Scheme, so should you give notice and the landlord doesn't want to return the deposit because of the damp, you will be protected by law if you can show it isn't your fault. This looks like rising damp, so is classed as a structural issue that should be dealt with by the landlord, not the tenant. Document EVERYTHING!

Load More Replies...Uh... Engineer here, but I don't understand - can anybody tell me how an empty detergent bottle is supposed to stop the furnace from making the house shake? O.ô
It's meant to act as a cushion/damper? The landlord maybe thought it was just a rattling sound that needed fixing.
Load More Replies...thats actually scary and should be brought to more serious matters.. thats a serious safety issue.. it could mean theres something wrong with the foundation
Yeah that's not a fire hazard at all, or a chemical reaction waiting to happen.
Third Time In Two Months That My Landlord Didn’t Pay The Wi-Fi Bill So I Went And Did It Myself In Person. Got This Text From Her Friend Immediately After
Why not just get your own WiFi that you can pay for? I pay for my own WiFi so I don't have to hope my landlord deals with it
It depends on the conditions they agreed on. If they're not fulfilling them, it's the tenant's right to complain
Load More Replies...Trying to understand: So, did Landlord's Friend *really* pay money towards the WiFi, or are they taking credit for OP's payment? I'm a tad confused...
$367 "towards it"? And what do you mean third time in 2 months? Do you have to pay bi-weekly? Either this is b******t, or that internet service is so fast you can travel back in time.
Probably the bills are backed up, months on top of months with late fees

When I was young and broke, I rented a s****y small apartment. He had just painted the kitchen about a week before I moved in. Of all things he had painted over a cockroach. When I poked it with a screwdriver, it fell down. And started moving... 😮 Seriously
Sounds like the setup for a joke - "How lazy was he? So lazy he painted over a penny!"
I'm so frugal I would have picked it up. Must not be a slumlord since they didn't. Unless they missed it entirely.
It’s odd how little people try to do their jobs. Like they can’t even lift their limbs properly or some s**t
Landlord Replaced The Doorknobs Yesterday. They're Like This All Over The Apartment
Locks aren't actually that hard to install. The landlord is just an idiot, incapable of following basic instructions.
Again, probably a false title. No chance someone installed all of these all over and didn't once close any of the doors. Not buying it.
The Moment You Realize Your New Landlord Is Insane
sounds like a dodgy boarding house. Best advice I can give is : move out as fast as possible. Just escaped such a lunatic. Sleeping on the floor, in a safe environment is way better than on an uncomfortable bed supplied by an insane landlord. Run. Seriously - run now.
I'm sorry you had to go through that. Hope you are enjoying your new place!

Landlord Painted My Stairs. Should Have Specified On The Color Before I Agreed
Compared to all the rest, this is not that bad. Paint flowers on it, or put real flowers in pots, could be cool.
This is not so bad. Read the post and you will feel thankful, if this is your only problem.
The colour is bright, but it's not a health or safety problem.

My Landlord Installed A New Cabinet
After seeing all the previous disasters, this is not so bad (and I'm a short person).
I’m a short person and I’d prefer the new one. All my cabinets and cupboards go to the ceiling (not high ceilings to be fair) because I hate that pointless dust collecting couple of inches on the tops of other cabinets.
Load More Replies...Head clearance for over the sink - slightly useful. In the UK they'd be more bothered by there being a socket that near to a water source.
I think everyone is wrong about it being about the sink. I think the tenant is complaining about the lack of cabinet hardware.
When My Landlord Said He Wanted To Put Guardrails On My Second Floor Porch, I Figured He Meant Around Edges
That doesn't seem like a porch, that's bare roofing. If you step on it like that, you may cause leaks below. It needs gravel or planks as protection first.
Exactly. That guard rail is exactly where it should be.

You're assuming they're allowed to fix things like this under their tenancy agreement.

Seems like you’d have trouble getting out because you’d have to turn both knobs at the same time
I'm not sure how they work or what is wrong with these. We don't have deadbolts here.
It's a lock that only works from one side. It needs some place to lick in place. There's nothing on the door frame to lock it in place.
Load More Replies...I Now Have To Give My Landlord More Money Because He Has More Money
Might be justified. In Germany, the tax for a rented property is tied to the rent you COULD charge, not the rent you actually do charge. It's beyond stupid and only serves to make the problem of rising rents worse, but the government refuses to fix it (well, the state makes good money from those taxes ... and getting lots of money from taxes is all that matters when running a country, right?) and there's been many reports about property owners who HAVE to increase rent because rents rose in that area so the taxes rose so they have to raise rent to afford the taxes...
Bingo. The title maybe be the exact reverse. You have to pay more because the landlord has to pay more now in taxes. Until the landlord sells, they have no more money at all. If they keep and the market goes down, they now have less money.
Load More Replies...Not quite. While rental increases do suck for tenants, if the rental value of the property has gone up (because the market has increased), it is standard practice to increase rent accordingly. This is typically done at the end of the lease, or, if outside a "fixed term" lease (or if included on your lease agreement), the market will be reviewed every 6-12 months. So yeah, if the rental market for a comparable property has gone up, it's pretty standard that your rent will also go up eventually. Otherwise, we'd all be living in our great-grandparents' rental, and only paying dollars per month, (if only that was a thing! :D )
I may be wrong here, but I’d have to imagine that if the increase doesn’t happen at the end of a lease, the tenant would retain the right to ‘not accept’ it and move out with penalty...
Load More Replies...Or, just maybe, you have to pay more money because now the owner is taxed more money. Yes, his value is more, but now his tax burden is higher and thus he actually makes less off of the rent. Not to mention, rent is often based off of house value. HOWEVER, this is only a valid statement if you are on a month to month and not under a contract.
if the property value increased, the landlord's taxes increased, you pay
My landlord said that the bank wouldn't lend him any money because his rents were not at "market value" and they thought he wouldn't be able to make the payments. So he raised everyone's rent. Ours went up by $345. Market value, my sweet a*s! Our rent has gone up 44% since we moved in 6 years ago.
My Girlfriend's Crazy Downstairs Landlady Makes Her Do This To Her Kitchen Chairs
This is probably because the sound or dragging chairs is annoying af and you probably drag your chair when getting up or sitting down. That or for some reason, LL is overly fond of that floor.
You can buy felted pads that you stick on the bottom of furniture for that - rather than this weird idea.

This type of porch light, the cover pops off on one side and has a hinge. Unscrew dead bulb, put in new bulb, put cover back on. This way works better so dust and bugs don’t collect in it.
So much illegal and dodgy work. Hope these landlords were reported.
So many people who don't understand that the whole world doesn't work exactly the same as where they live…
So we mention what we know and our experiences where we are. It just might help someone else in our same country who might not be aware of their rights. Load More Replies...Uhm... don't get me wrong, but why do people stay in such conditions and don't move out? I've been in a few rented appartments when I was younger and the first signs of mould / roaches / leaks etc would make me move out immediately. I'm not familiar with renting market in GB/ US but I just can't understand people who put up with that instead of finding a new place to live in decent conditions.
If it is like Australia often tenants have to put down a big cash "damage deposit" and / or insurance for the Landlord. So moving can be *extremely* expensive.
Load More Replies...It’s disturbing to me to see what people have to put up with because otherwise they won’t have a place to live. That such landlords have so little care for others (and don't care about their property) that they have tenants living in mould and weak structures with dodgy electricity, etc. It's MEAN and uncalled for. I’m very grateful to live in a safe and well-tended building, and that issues are properly repaired promptly, and it’s not like I live in a rich or middle-class area, either. One run-in was all it took. The landlord's management company pretended they didn't have my rent check (a ploy so they could claim I didn't pay, evict me, and raise the rent by 20% on the next tenant), but I called 311 (in NYC), and a woman I know who's a tenant lawyer for a non-profit (she did me a solid and called the landlord on my behalf). Lo, and behold! All of a sudden, check found. I haven't had a problem since. Like I said, I'm very grateful and recognize my good fortune. I tell my friends who have issues what agencies to call. At some point, people get fed up with this sort of meanness. To quote Mister Rogers, "...the only thing that really angers me is something that's demeaning to somebody else." Such conditions are demeaning, IMO. And tenants pay for it? Nah, son. Nah.
Sorry that you had to go through that. I hope you enjoy your new place! I moved to a studio that's basic but everything works, it costs the same as I was paying, and the location is great - even using a cane, I can walk to anywhere. And the building super is really respectful and cares about what he's doing. The other day he was sweeping the parking lot!
