In 2016, John Einarsen started shooting the unassuming, everyday Japanese architecture of the city he calls home, for Kyoto Journal's Instagram page. Yes, you remember that Bored Panda post from last year? Well, as it turns out, the tiny home project is still not over!

Two years in and John's online collection falls just short of 400 cool photos. And he's decided to make the second book dedicated to small houses.

I asked him whether anything has changed in his approach on the Japanese style homes since the project began, to which he answered:

"I think, to begin with, I was drawn more to the apartment buildings with more obvious quirks, perhaps because I was thinking about how viewers would respond, to create a sense of novelty...The project is still all about showing this other side of Kyoto that is largely ignored, but I think that looking at the images now, viewers might notice they have mellowed or toned down, so maybe you need to look at them a little longer, ponder the details to appreciate them fully..."

Still, I hope these adorable small spaces charm your socks off!

This could use some renovations (but not too much so it would become unrecognizable - I like the old look, I just don't want for it to fall apart)

The container gardens on these streets are amazing. I've never seen such well tended and perfectly curated gardens...in places where a real garden is impossible.

I've been to this museum several times. "Raku" is not a pottery process, it's a family name. This museum has pieces in it that are original to the family founders - over 600 years old. The family is still producing pottery, but there is no store at the museum. Photography is forbidden. There's a sign inside the gallery that says, "Photographs make garbage". ...///... They're right. The work has to be seen in person to truly appreciate it.

Gorgeous - and VERY expensive. I was never able to figure out if this is a renovation or a new build, but either way, this place is large for a city residence, and beautifully built.
