Summer Season Came But The Tourists That Usually Flood The US Didn’t, As This Guy Online Noticed
Interview With AuthorThere are plenty of reasons to visit the United States. I can’t imagine going my entire life without seeing the stunning scenery of the Grand Canyon or having the experience of sitting in a classic American diner for hours, enjoying fluffy pancakes, bottomless coffee and great conversation with friends.
But is it worth it to see the Empire State Building when there’s a risk that you might get stuck in an ICE detention center for weeks? Due to tariffs, negative sentiments towards the nation and concerning decisions lawmakers have made about human rights, many people around the globe have decided that there are plenty of safer and more affordable countries to visit than the US. Below, you’ll find several videos that have recently been posted on TikTok discussing this topic, as well as some of the replies viewers shared.
Historically, the United States has been one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world

Today, however, many travelers are hesitant to visit for a variety of reasons

Financial Times has also reported a steep decline in tourism to the US in 2025

“I hope the administration recognizes how much of our economy relies on tourism and good will from citizens of other countries”
To learn more about this topic, we got in touch with Alex Plank, who shared a TikTok discussing the findings the Financial Times published about foreign tourism tanking in the United States. He was kind enough to have a chat with Bored Panda and discuss what inspired him to speak on this topic.
“I read the Financial Times newspaper every day,” Alex says. “When I saw their article about Europeans canceling US visits, I wanted to share that ITA data with my audience.”
We also wanted to know if Alex was surprised at all by this sudden decrease in tourism. “Not entirely. Perhaps the degree to which it has declined so quickly was surprising to see visually,” he noted. “But I wouldn’t say that it’s a surprising reaction from travelers.”
As far as whether or not there’s anything the current administration can do to increase tourism again, Alex says, “It really depends on whether or not this reaction was transitory, or if the trend continues. I’m not sure the administration wants to turn things around at this point, so that may not be the right question to ask.”
Finally, he added, “I hope the administration recognizes how much of our economy relies on tourism and good will from citizens of other countries.”
Many viewers shared that they have no interest in visiting until the current president is gone

With all of the variety the country has to offer, the United States used to be a tourism powerhouse
Historically, the United States of America has been one of the most popular travel destinations in the world. In fact, just last year, the World Economic Forum deemed it the top country for tourism. People would travel far and wide to see stunning national parks, famous cities like Los Angeles, Las Vegas and New York City, and visit global events like Coachella, Mardi Gras, the Super Bowl and more.
And, of course, the variety of nature available is a huge selling point.
“The USA is blessed with more variety of landscapes and interesting cities than any country on the planet, from mountains, desert, tropics, swamp,” Tim Leffel, author of the book and online resources The World’s Cheapest Destinations, told the BBC. “New Orleans, New York City, Santa Fe, Alaska and Florida are more different than most countries are.”
There’s something for everyone to enjoy, and many people around the world are thrilled to finally visit iconic spots they’ve seen dozens of photos of or have experiences they’ve only seen in films.
However, since the new president took office in January, the country has already seen a sharp decline in tourism from other nations. The Financial Times reports that, not only have many Europeans chosen to avoid the US, some have simply canceled the trips that they already had planned.
The number of tourists visiting from Norway, Ireland and Germany has already plummeted by over 20%. And the total number of foreign travelers passing through airports in the United States has dropped by over 10% in recent months. Meanwhile, some airlines have tried offering European travelers discounted rates in an attempt to offset the decline in tourism.
Travelers have also been shocked to see how empty Las Vegas was when they visited

Many travelers have decided that visiting the United States is just too risky
So why exactly are travelers from around the globe deciding to skip the land of the free? Some are citing President Trump’s tariffs, which have damaged US relations with many nations and caused sharp increases on certain products.
Others are worried about being able to get a visa that will guarantee them a safe stay in the country. Due to President Trump’s concerns about “national security and public safety threats,” it has become increasingly difficult for many travelers to get visas to visit the United States. And even if someone is legally allowed to visit, that doesn’t guarantee their safety.
There have been dozens of horror stories circulating the news recently about completely innocent people being detained by ICE. Whether they’re a high school student, a US citizen, a college student or visiting on a travel visa, it seems like no one is safe.
And the stories detainees share describe appalling conditions that no human should ever be subjected to, even if they happen to be in the nation illegally.
“I was taken to a tiny, freezing cement cell with bright fluorescent lights and a toilet,” Canadian citizen Jasmine Mooney writes. “There were five other women lying on their mats with the aluminum sheets wrapped over them, looking like d**d bodies. The guard locked the door behind me.”
So what are the impacts of this failing tourism industry in the United States? CBS News warns that there could be a loss of over 230,000 jobs, with restaurants and lodging industries expected to take the biggest hit.
To offset this, those working in the hospitality industry will be expected to focus their energy towards domestic tourists. But that may not be easy when the majority of Americans report living paycheck to paycheck. So they’re probably not able to take a vacation whenever they want.
We would love to hear your thoughts on this issue in the comments below, pandas. Would you be willing to visit the United States right now? Then, you can find another article discussing similar themes right here.
Viewers echoed the sentiment that most people can’t afford to visit overpriced tourist destinations, and many people don’t even want to

Yeah, I won't go spending my money in a country, about what my own government have warned me, it's risky. Nobody in their sane mind is going on holidays in Russia, most of the Middle Eastern countries or North Korea. They are risky places. As is USA now.
Yeah, the page from Auswärtiges Amt is scary reading.

The USA and the EU used to be friends. It's sad that this seems to be a thing of the past.
People should avoid the US. You shouldn't travel and give your money to places with continuing human rights abuses. I encourage everyone to boycott the US even though I'm from an area who has already been hard hit by lack of tourism. Don't fund fascism. Everything you buy in the US, the tax at any rate is going to go to a totalitarian regime with an appalling record on human rights. Not to mention your ESTA fees going directly to Kristy Noam's budget, and you still might get detained and deported. German tourists in Hawaii for two weeks were destined for a month and charged for the pleasure. They had visas, they weren't trying to stay. Don't risk it, don't do it.
You know, there are those "national-aisles" in every big grocery store, where you can find products imported direct from that specific country. At a Kaufland big store, where I'm going like every 2 weeks, I noticed, that the shelves are not anymore stocked after an item runs out in the USA-aisle. I guess, they are done with them. Good. Anyway, was ridiculous, and after trying a few items, any sane person would wonder: Who TF is paying for this overprocessed shít over there?

My wife and I split our time between Massachusetts and Vermont and we rent out our little house in Vermont as a short term rental when we aren't using it. It is near the Canadian border. Usually about 40% of our guests are from Canada and this year it has down to next to nothing. I don;t blame people. We are living in a s h i t hole country. It is horrible.

Yeah, foreign tourism is pretty much dead in the US until they fix their sh*t. That said, the graphs also paint a pretty dire image of the US economy, with a massive drop of US traffic toward destinations traditionally driven by business activities (EU, Asia and Canada).
USA's GDP projections are currently at -0,6% in 2025, with a terrifying -0,3% already locked in for Q1 (this happened previously only in the 2008 economic crisis, and during COVID). Considering 2024 saw a 2.8% growth, Trump is going to be responsible for a massive 3,6% drop. That is 1 TRILLION USD in lost value: that is 1,25x the DoD budget; 80% of overall national Social Security or Health expenditure; Twice the yearly debt interest. Trump loud mouth alone burned enough money to finance 16% of the whole government.

Everything in USA feels like a grift, from over blown tipping to exorbitant tourist entry prices and food and accommodation costs to different sales taxes to your way over valued dollar. The biggest issues though is the extremist views and gun culture plus healthcare costs. Getting hurt or having a medical episode in USA terrifies me and travel insurance is going be a crazy outlay, so not worth it.
The U.S. is gradually becoming a police state. They are even considering sending their own citizens to foreign jails. Why would anyone from a free country want to go there?
I went several times to the USA, last time in 2011. I visited beautiful places and met lovely people. But now I wouldn't. He said two interesting things. First, that all Europeans think that Florida and Disneyland are the greatest place in the world to go. And second, that the US is/used to be the one of the top tourist destinations, world wide. I disagree with both of these statements. I definitely don't think that the world's tourism is so US-centric. Along with the horror stories of US immigration, Trump is messing with investments globally. People are less likely to take on discretionary spending on vacations if they think the US President is going to announce 200% tariffs at the drop of a hat.
I applaud you. Teach this idiotic US administration that their stupid antics have financial consequences.
The current US administration is the most disgusting I happen to witness. Not one cent from us to fund them. Also, we are currently checking all US brands we are customers of, and how to reduce that. Yes, we are European.
The US has never, and will never, be on my go to destinations list. I've never understood what others see in it, there's no real history or true sights of interest for non-Americans. It's too expensive, people demand tips everywhere because they don't get a real wage to live off, and there are too many idiots with guns
I wonder what the stats are for US citizens leaving. If I lived there, I'd do everything in my power to move to another country.
We started the process of leaving the US the last time the orange Oompa Loompa was president. It's bizarre watching what is going on from over here in France. My husband and I are continuously thankful we live in a country where we don't have to worry about being shot or living somewhere where basic human rights are being demolished every single day.

I'm ashamed of my country. We burned our allies. We get what we deserve. We need to fight back but I also think that maybe Trump hurting his own people and not getting bailed out by the Dems maybe will change minds. Either way suffering is what everyone is going to be confronted with.
Why would I want to go to a country that is so dysfunctional and outwardly racist? Why would I want to have to show my phone at customs and why would I want to visit a country that voted for such a hateful, stupid and corrupt president? I will spend my money in amazing countries like Japan that are everything the USA is not.
I'm sure there's a logical explanation for this. There must be somebody ultimately responsible for the precipitous decline in US tourism. Who could it be?
Breathe the same air as Trump? No thank you. My daughter wanted to go backpacking in the US and I said f**k NO. Go to Úganda africa. Much safer!!
It's interesting, I just finished reading an article about cross-border travel between Canada and the USA and how businesses on the border are suffering, including small towns in Canada that usually get a lot of people coming through around this time of year - and that article put the blame 100% on the tariffs and on the 51st state comments and subsequent "elbows up" boycott-America movement. And sure, I expect those both play a part. But everybody *I* know is more afraid than anything else. You go to the States right now, tourism or conferences or whatever, and you might not come back. I'm glad to see that not everybody in journalism is blind to this simple fact.
Instead of bankrupting one casino at a time, Rump is trying to get them all in one go.
I won't go, not because of any political consideration, but because it's too expensive. It used to be if something was $5 in Canada, it was $3 in the USA. Not anymore. Now they are the same, but with the added exchange rate as well. Too expensive.
Yeah, the US Dollar is way higher than it should be

I would not go to the USA even if I got paid to do so. Let's face it the moment they see my social media, they wouldn't let me in and/or I might land in a deportation camp so that the Orange s**t stain and the owners of those camps can make some money from my incarceration. I really want to go to all the natural wonders the USA has to offer (I don't give a flying F*** about the big cities) but unless they fix their government, their education, their gun problem and their fascism I'm not going.
Have cancelled a booked and paid for cruise to Alaska. Will instead be taking the train across Canada! Looking forward!
Hell, I'm IN the United States and I don't want to vacation here either!
Assuming, too, that your plane won't get crashed into because air traffic controllers have been fired.
I love the survey at the end. "Would you like a discount on the risk of getting black bagged to El Salvador?"
I've been to the USA 4 times over 3 decades. I was hoping to go to see the Yellowstone National Park in the next few years. But... my (Australian) passport will show I have also visited China and Vietnam. Too scared that I'll be detained at the border being asked questions about these visits. Also, too much chaos going on in the politics there. I don't want to get caught up in all that.
The Smithsonian Channel has a series "Rise of the Dictators". It's every thing that the Orange T**d is doing. Poor people are worse off, yet he tells them that they are doing better and they believe him. The education system has failed the poor. As a consumer I am actively avoiding buying any food or house hold products made in the USA.
Was a frequent visitor. No more, what with the orange ozemandius , expensive prices and don't get me started on tipping there's no reason to visit when I can fly around Europe and live like a king on much less money and travelling time.
We were frequent visitors. No longer . Apart from the orange ozemandius running his f*****t country I can't make long term bookings because I don't know what the hell is happening day to day . Plus everything is soooo expensive now and don't get me started on tipping !
You couldn't pay me enough money to even consider going to the USA, the dictator stopped that with his free speech ban😅plenty of other places to visit, and much safer than 3rd world usa
Well you reap what you sow !! shouldn’t have voted the orange lunatic in now should you DO YOU ALL GET IT NOW !! quit winging n do something about it already 🤷♀️
They chose to vote in a f*****t dictator. They agreed with his hateful rhetoric, they don't now get to whine and complain when decent people choose to stay away from them in droves. You reap what you sow.
I don't doubt tourism is down. But as someone who has lived in Vegas for almost 20 years--those photos of the strip at night don't mean anything. People have this idea that the Vegas strip is bustling all night long. It isn't. Most things close down way earlier than you'd expect. The only thing open super late are night clubs. The pics shared here look pretty typical for late night Vegas.
"The loveliest most friendly of people"... The highest violent crime rate among developed countries (398/yr per 100k people. UK, the runner up, has 1/3rd that). 45.000 deaths from gun violence per year, and the most mass shootings by far (12,2 gun deaths/yr per 100k people, the global average is <2). On international rankings the US are way, way low in the "friendliness" scale: 28/53 on Internations Expat Insider, 36/46 on HSBC Expat Explorer. OECD "Our World in Data" put American social trust score at 33%, compared to Norway leading at 74% and Canada at 61% (this measure the trust in the community and social environment, friendlier countries have higher scores). Among the developed countries, the US have the highest income inequality, highest rate of hate crime against minorities, highest incidence of police brutality and racism-related events. But sure, keep blabbering about being "friendly"

American here. Don't blame you. The world has plentiful safe and interesting places to visit. I hope when Dump's term is up that some may return. But that is the price we must pay for allowing the Washington freak show to happen.
I would love to go see Maryland, it's where mom grew up. But, my god, the disconnect between what the flag stands for and what is actually going on is ridiculous. So I guess I'm going to have to file this in the unfulfilled dreams box with all the others...
Well if you will vote that dangerous lunatic amongst other things , in to the White House what do you expect !! The uk hate him ! No good moaning now ! Change the narrative get him out , then you can get a decent county back ! Before he wipes us all of the map
