These are different varieties. The one on the left is a modern hybrid, possibly an Early Girl The one on the right looks like a Cherokee Purple. If you want to compare similar varieties, compare the latter with today's Beefsteak.

I grow what they call "heirloom" tomato here in the states. Yup none of that hybrid stuff for me.

You can grow in a pot. Don't have to have a garden. Now I use raised beds as I have graduated from pots. :)

Why would the heirloom one taste better? Taste is determined by genetics and growing conditions. If anything the modern one was bred from an old heirloom to improve it. When you know how new varieties are created, you understand that. I hate this mentality that because it's modern, it's bad. It's not inherently better because it's an heirloom.

You would not believe how difficult it is to find tomatoes like the one on the right. No, they don't look perfect, but they have a wonderful full flavor, unlike those grown today which I accurately describe as (cardboard tomatoes, because that's what they taste like)

We have these too. Only now they’re called heirloom. They’re expensive but they taste like a tomato should. The one on the left is a GMO’d tomato and tastes like water.

We discuss a lot at the lunch time the difference between a natural growing tomato and the ones from the supermarket. The difference is almost as drastically as what we see here.

You can find some like the one on the right in any good seed catalogue. This proves nothing. There are hundreds if not thousands of tomato varieties. Grocery stores offer just a tiny selection of what really exist.

The first cultivated tomatoes were yellow cherry sized ones and were called golden apples.

The right tomatoe we call them "coração de boi" (bulls' heart) variety, here in Portugal. They can be very big and juicy (not watery).

the room on the left has a light on inside though, you can tell by the shadow of the ceiling light. Either that or it has a second window.
