Wait till they LI-DAR the Sahara. They're guaranteed to find a crazy ancient civilization buried under sand. Too big of an area not to, it's like 5 million square KM of untouched sand. Already started in the Amazon. Thank you Graham Hancock!

Interesting, the dark parts are the deserts. The Namib in the west, the Sahara to the North, and the Kalahari which us just below the Namib to the west.

We wanted to know how Patrick, the founder, feels about the massive success of the subreddit, and that it's been around for nearly 12 years.

"It's crazy to think about how long the community has been around. I think that Reddit as a whole has become this massive social media presence," he shared his thoughts with Bored Panda.

"It's a useful site for sharing information and that has spread around the world," Patrick said that the community has "filled a niche" and believes it was started at "just the right time."

According to the founder, in the past 12 years, there's been a big shift to mobile-friendly content, which has changed how the subreddit is used.

Maybe they should define wealth. I can hardly imagine Spain would decrease. No offense guys but Scandinavian countries seem to be significantly more wealthy.

    Adam Jeff
    Community Member
2 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

In the lower map, wealth is being redistributed both between countries and within the country, so that everyone in the world has the same. The total wealth of Spaniards would certainly decrease, because Spain is a richer-than-average country. The total wealth of Scandinavians would decrease even more, because they are wealthier as you say, BUT they gain more from the internal redistribution, because scandinavia is more unequal to begin with (as shown in the upper map).

Utter nonsense about the US and claiming it's the same as Sweden. A secretary in the United States is likely to make about $20,000 a year, whereas a surgeon will make more like half a million dollars a year. In Sweden secretary will make around 25,000 sek, whereas a surgeon might make 100.000 sek a month with much higher taxes.

"In the beginning, the users had desktop computers and the maps were the kind that you could zoom in on and study for hours. Now, many of the maps are made for quick consumption to show interesting trivia or geographic anomalies," he explained how the content has changed over the years.

Patrick is very passionate about traveling and is almost a modern-day adventurer in his spare time. In his spare time, he makes maps. We were curious about what he's been up to, recently.

"I've recently been traveling. I just finished a trip to Jordan and Israel and got to explore many historic sites. I've been doodling some casual maps from the trip. The geography of the holy land has inspired me to make more maps and I hope to post some soon," he told Bored Panda.

"Also, this summer I'm planning on visiting Finland for the International Map Collectors Society annual conference. Finland has been a historical country for cartography and I'm excited to visit the libraries and map collections there."

Volendam, one of the villages in this inbreed circle, is more like a catholic island in a protestant sea. Most of the 21.000 people are part of only seven families, and there use to be a genetic disease that only existed in the village which causes horrible mental and physical disabilities that result in a very young dead. Luckily, thanks to modern medical science and an app, the disease is as good as extinct. (The disease in Urk, that Petra schaap spoke of, is a bone disease where the bones grows to fast and thick)

That area just south of China northeast of India, looks like a weird, grey-ish stretch mark. I've seen that feature there on other maps and, to me, it looks like something happened a very long time ago, like a drained flood going from the Arabic desert towards Indonesia and the Pacific Ocean. That's what it looks like but I'm not sure and VERY curious to know what it's all about.

They could do with more water there. In fact there is an event held in Alice Springs (located in the middle of Australia) called the Henley-on-Todd Regatta where there is a "boat" race on the dry river bed of the Todd River (the contestants use their feet to propel the boat-like vehicle like Fred Flintstone). The event had to be cancelled once because there was water in the Todd River

The mastermind behind the awesome community is its founder, land surveyor Patrick—a big fan of traveling and creating maps. Over the past few years, we’ve spoken to Patrick a number of times and he shed some light on the community, map-making, and having an adventurous spirit.

"There are many different reasons one chooses to make a map. Sometimes for navigation, sometimes for showing statistical phenomena, and sometimes for fantasy. While artistic skill helps, it is not absolutely necessary,” he told Bored Panda earlier.

“The important thing is to make it easy for users to glean useful information. Most maps should have a thesis or a story it is going to tell and this needs to be told through the map," the founder of the subreddit, Patrick, told us during an interview earlier.

Unfortunately the sun buggers up the skin if you don't wear sunscreen and I think it's sad that darker-skinned people use these creams to whiten their lovely dark skin. I just go red in the summer so I guess I look like Uncle Vinnies restaurant tablecloths in summer LOL

I wish everyone would use sun screen every time they are outdoors. I even have to wear it while riding in a car but I also am on medication that makes my skin more sensitive to sunlight. But the biggest impression I have ever had was working as a nurse with wound patients. Post surgical wounds from melanoma removal. The lesion you see could be just the size of a coin but the surgical site could be the size of a dinner plate, excised down to bone. Some even have to take the bone. Then the following chemo and radiation makes healing such an interrupted process. One patient had the entire top of his head removed. Another had his jaw, cheek, cheekbone, roof of his mouth and most of his sinuses on one side. Another had his ear, and strip of skin full thickness, removed from where his ear was down the side of his face and all the way down his neck. They doctors then took graft off his thigh approximately 12 inches bling by 4 inches wide which then split open. Horrible type of cancer

The ISO A sizes are wonderful; the long side is √2 times longer than the short side which means chopping it in half gives you two sheets with exactly the same proportions which means printing things on bigger or smaller sheets is trivial.

    An A0 sheet is exactly 1 m2. An A1 sheet is 1/2 m2. An A2 sheet is 1/4 m2, and so on... . . . An Ax sheet is 1/(2^x) m2

The founder works on a lot of maps in his spare time. "Lately, I've been learning Blender. It is more of a 3-D animation program used by video game developers, but I believe that there are ways to use it to display maps," he told us in late 2021 how he’s been trying out new tools.

"Blender has a great ability to show light and shadow patterns that are almost photo-realistic. I think there are ways to use this program beyond showing maps with realistic terrain. I'm still a novice now, but I'd like to explore other ways this program can visualize maps," he said at the time.

I wonder where do people gather their information from. Most of the statements are incorrect. We are vegetarians by choice. Yes, the religion plays a major part as religions like Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism and certain Indigenous religious beliefs believe in not harming the animals. Veganism is different from vegetarian diet. Also there is no hard and fast rule to go vegetarian. In India, geography differs extensively, hence the diet is mostly dependent on geography. India has a vast variety of food availability in form of vegetables that are cheaper than meat products hence people prefer eating vegetables.

Republicans believe the people living in the sparsely populated areas are more important than the people in the cities, and their opinions should matter more, even though they are far outnumbered. Republicans absolutely believe in minority rule. It's all about their feelings. They overturned Roe vs Wade, and 83% of Americans believe they should have left it alone.

My personal opinion is that the British people were lied to by Westminster. Britain, certainly England, had become less patriotic due to the BNP, NF, and other racist organisations. It had lost its socialism. It's inclusiveness. It has definitely lost its identity! And I believe that was capitalised upon. But Britain must now persevere. The decision was made. No use arguing over it. For better or worse it's done. We must make the best out of the situation. I have heard a lot of good things regarding CANZUK; A lot of good literature out there

They ask a representative sample of people. Provided that you do a good job of weighting the 'representative' bit right, the results are statistically correct even with a sample of just a couple of thousand people in each country.

All that 'sh..t' going down in Ukraine and their "peace" level only went down 17%? Makes me wonder how this is calculated. And why is Russia not on that map for going down in peacefulness? They literally invaded another country / still doing so.

It's not "17%". The website where the map is from has a list representing 163 countries (out of 195 total, so ignoring a lot of the small ones) and Ukraine fell 17 places from their previous position of 136/163 to 153/163. Russia was already lower and only fell a few places to 160/163 because they already had high scores in such things as "militarization of society", "people in jail", "repression by the government", "taking part in external conflicts" (Ukraine and Syria) etc., with the only countries worse than it being Syria, Yemen and Afghanistan.

The North American Grey Squirrel (first brought the UK in the 1700, and expanded since then) is larger and more aggressive than the native Reds, and they eat the same food and willing to attack over food supplies forcing the red squirrel's into smaller and smaller areas to the point the British government considers them at risk for endangerment. Today the UK Govt encourages the trapping and hunting of Grey's for food. When they started the campaign, they hired southern Chefs from the US who had experienced with the product to teach brits how to cook them.

The greys carry squirrel pox. It doesn't really affect them much - long-acquired immunity - but it's hit the reds hard, as the population hadn't encountered it before.

People forget Reporters without Borders is a hyper partisan political organization caught rigging numbers in the past (in one cases listed 7 member of Hamas's Al-Qassam Brigage falsely as Journalists to be able to downgrade Israel's numbers. With Hungary they once used a law that hasn't been around for years as an excuse to downgrade, they currently list a US Journalist arrested by the FBI for distributing child porn and raping a minor who he brought over state lines for money as "political intimidation arrest", etc). They are not, as they try to imply, a non-partisan org like Doctors without Borders. They are a very dubious org with a troubled history. Best to do is look at Freedom Houses Index's Journalism ranking for a non-partisan legit ranking.

The US should be at "very serious situation” considering their mainstream media is completely controlled by corporations. Not to mention they were behind the arrest of Julian Assange, who exposed US war crimes, and issued a warrant for Edward Snowden, who exposed illegal government spying.

People need to educate themselves on what truly happens to Palestinians in the West Bank, in the name of “fighting terrorists” and “for the safety of Israel”. The West Bank was always supposed to be for Palestinians, since 1948. Israel seems to want all of Palestine for itself and only for itself.

I'm 100% certain that neither Tiramisu nor MurderMIttens really has the facts straight. Here is a fact of life - in 1948, when the UN devised the partition plan, neither side actually cared. Each grabbed what they could. The Israelis were more desperate and more organized, while the Palestinians were more numerous, and had the help of the newly established countries of Syria, Jordan, Egypt, and Lebanon. It was a battle for which side could take as much as they could. The border was nothing more than a cease fire line that was drawn in 1949. Jordan claimed the West Bank, and Egypt claimed Gaza. Both actively worked to suppress attempts at establishing a Palestinian State in the territories they claimed. They only started talking about a Palestinian State in the West Bank and Gaza after they lost these territories. Had there been a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza before 1967, there would likely be one today.

Jesus would have been born approximately in Afula because of the stops and stress and maybe lack of suitable paperwork for the donkey. Maybe no room in the barn in Afula either. And the 3 wise men would have arrived considerably later for same reasons + undoubtedly their myrrh would have been confiscated.

False. Because several of those areas are illegal for Jews from Israel to enter, and many areas illegal for Jews without permits to enter, as per Palestinian Authority Law.

Also it is illegal for Jews to enter Bethlehem under PA Law without special permits. Its jailable offense for treason to rent or sell rooms, apartments, etc there to Jews as well. If Jesus's Jewish parents tried to go there today, they would be arrested, assuming the mob didn't kill them first. People, including Israeli Arabs, they think are Jews get attacked in PA cities all the times as the beg they are not Jewish before the mob moves off from them.

Only shows earthquakes over magnitude 6.0. There have been a couple of minor ones in the UK that were enough to causes some damage. I'm guessing if you plotted them all, the result would be much the same, but it would be wrong to think that the places with no dots on the map haven't had the Earth move for them.

Except for food for which people boast a lot. If you say you're proud to be French outside of the context of sports competition or space expedition, you are suspected to be a fascist. I forgot to put away my French flag from my window after the world cup and my whole village thought for a while that I was a far right activist

there could be a plot twist. Maybe the country scoring the lowest doesn't hate their own culture, they are just cultured enough to recognize they are not necessarily superior to people with cultures different than their own. TLDR: An enlightened/kind/mature person probably would not say they are superior.

with Germany's past and which will continue to be remembered, the Germans dare not fight. the risk is too great to be seen again as the cause of a massive war (not that I'm saying they're innocent). so I can understand that the Germans are reluctant. that's somehow a good sign that the mistakes of the past (or something like that) shouldn't be repeated.

That's simply declarative - except Ukraine. Some countries (especially in western Europe) haven't had a major conflict or uprising since 1945, nor did they have an aggressive neighbor such as the former USSR. The truth is, you never know what people would do in extreme situations.

I see it as a risk index. Countries more at risk of imminent war have citizens ready to defend them. Western Europe has been conflict free since 1945 and is shielded by the most powerful military alliance in the history of the world. Outside of nuclear conflict there are no militaries in the world strong enough to successfully invade NATO. I imagine this index would quickly change if these countries came under threat.

Survey results like this come down to how the question was presented. The answers can swing wildly. A population’s willingness to fight a war somewhere else is going to be different than their willingness to fight if they are in dangerous of or actively being invaded.

    Adam Jeff
    Community Member
2 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Exactly. The question depends on the context. If you ask someone in the Baltic states right now 'would you fight for your country?' they are obviously going to imagine a Russian invasion. If you ask someone in the UK the same question, we might understand it as 'do you want to go somewhere sandy and blow up Muslims to protect oil company profits?'.

What do you find unexpected? The high numbers, the low numbers, the distribution...? I would say that some countries have a low number because of involvement in a major war in the recent past and we don't want to ever repeat that (Germany). Some countries are ethnically quite homogenous and/or have conservative leaders that distribute the foreign threat narrative and/or have being attacked in the war deeply engrained in their national memory (e.g. Poland). The countries closer to Russia might feel a larger threat than those further West. None of these ideas explain all numbers, though... I (German) remember when visiting the US in 2005-2007 that the concept of "supporting the troops" and entering the army as a worthwhile career option was completely foreign to me.

My two cents on this are that is more a matter of security. You really don't know who's under a burka. And barely under a niqab. So for public spaces in countries that have suffered terrorist attacks l totally see why they'd want to see faces.

In belgium your face has to remain recognisable at all times. Technically a scarf over your mouth when it's cold and snowing is not allowed, but will be tolerated. Any other time, eyes, nose and mouth should be visible, especially at night. This law existed when I was a kid, fourty years ago, before burqa and nigab started appearing in the streets. On a municipal level, local police can allow certain periods when it's allowed - on the evening of carnaval tuesday between 20h00 and 06h00 for instance. Wether they are now (mis)using this law to forbid burqa or niqab out of racist reasons is another question altogether.

I didn't know that a burkini includes a face mask. It is usually just long trousers, long sleeve tunic with hood, all in the fabrics swim suits are made of.

I went to the local Mayday Rally (I go every year) back in 2018 and one of the speakers was this muslim teenager who was harassed on our local light rail line for wearing a Hajib. The woman walked up to her and ripped it off screaming "This is Donald Trump's America NOW". Her story made me cry.

That woman should have been punched in the head. As should all Trumpers. I'm amazed at the number of people that think he cares about anything other than himself.

Although having children starts as an egoistic decision to reproduce your genes, it is actually one of the most altruistic responsibilities a person can get in his/her life. You sacrifice so much to raise a child, and in the end you indirectly contribute to your country’s demographics and economy

NATO is obligated to become fully committed once they hit the Turkish border. I expect the Saudis and Kuwaitis would force the world to commit once they start calling in all the favors they are owed. The Israelis would have kicked their asses and called in their markers to get the US fully committed. It's easy to be an a*****e in a power vacuum inside of a few failing states, quite another to invade a strong military power.

It's funny people still think the Isis is a Muslim organisation, LOL in ISLAM it is forbidden to kill the innocent (the sin of killing one innocent is the same as killing the whole humanity) killing one innocent can land you in the hellfire, now it's they'll be going for killing the of whole humanity. Kidnapping and ransom is also a huge sin (they ended up killing the kidnapped one anyway) in ISLAM Those who Spread coruption are sentenced to death (for exp. A rapist, a murder, a druggist, a terrorist, a gang member, a corupt political party) For a man to do any of these( i only listed a few) is not a MUSLIM a MUSLIM means submitting your will to ALLAH (GOD) Not what these paid actors did

I live in Holland, I will have to work untill I'm 70. It's ok, because I understand we need to earn money to support the elderly. And as people grow older and re going to outnumber the younger workforce, we need to invest more money in retirement funds. From my (Dutch) perspective, I really don't understand why the French are complaining. What am I missing here?

You can put a lot of things behind "democracy": representative democracy, direct one, even some constitutionnal monarchies. I bet for some people it's because even tho their country is considered "democratic", it not the the democracy they want. For instance in France a lot of the power belongs to the president, and not the parliament, which means a lot of French think our democracy is flawed because too much power belongs to the executive branch.

People always think that the danger is outdoors. The real danger is indoors. You have a lot more chance to be beaten, mistreaten or be murdered by your partner or family members.

I am surprised the numbers are so high in some places... Germany Maybe because of the tradition of being member in a rifle club (Schützenverein) - which sounds bad to me but is mostly party (without guns) on country sides as far as I know...what's with the other high ranking countries?

I wonder what the number is in America? I'm American and it still blows my mind that I go the grocery store and there is at least one person strapped with a handgun in plain sight. And many people have Conceal Carry Permits.

Without specification what the guns are intended for, not much value. In at least Germany and the Netherlands it is next to impossible to receive a licence for bearing legally a gun for self protection. There are two exceptions to carry a gun: 1. Being a licenced hunter with an owned or rented hunting grounds, this includes duties as ranger. 2. Being a member of a "shooters club", which means (in short) once a year during a festival shooting at an artificial target. The winner is "Shooters King" and has to pay for the festival.

In Switzerland you keep your gun after militarily service for twenty years, after this time you can buy it for a symbolic price. All Swiss man have to do military or civilian service for about 6 months, some stay on as part time soldiers.

No, quite the opposite. The majority of Swiss men remain as 'active' members of the armed forces, doing a week or two of duty per year until a total of 50 (I think, something like that) weeks is attained. There are some full-time members, but any call to arms would mean a huge proportion of the population could be called up for active duty.

This is a bit misleading. It doesn’t seem to include voluntary access. Landowners may not be required to allow access but will do anyway. I can roam over the whole of The Brown Clee pretty much because the Landowner is ok with that, providing I act reasonably and don’t cause harm to the land. Just because it’s not required by law doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. They’re also not mentioning historic rights of way, commons, just the land that is under “Right to Roam Laws”. We don’t need a right to roam common land because it’s just that, common land. We also have access to National Trust land which is often free but there can be a charge if it’s associated with a stately home or something. Most National Trust land is coast land or SSI and is free to use. Most Forests aren’t apparently included on this map. You won’t be able to camp wherever you like and just obey the country code but otherwise, a lot of land in UK is very accessible. This is completely misleading and just plain stupid.

Interesting maps at JakubMarian. Polyglot Europe is a myth. Most Europeans know their native language(s) and English and that's it. That's good, but it's only practical, not evidence of some superior sense of culture. I wish English was as commonly taught in the US as it is in Europe. (It's NOT!!!) British who speak French: 19%. British who speak German: 6%. Who speak Italian: 2%. Russian: 2%. Spanish: 6%. Spanish who speak English: 22%. Who speak French: 9%. Italian: 2%. German: 2%. Russian: 0%.

I'm not saying it's a spy balloon, but it is NOT a weather balloon. Weather balloons don't have the ability to make course corrections...as were noted by the satellite tracking. And I'm sure it was innocent in it's course of flying over military installations, and only military installations. Atmospheric Circulation, global wind patterns, don't follow it's path. It could be believable if when it got to Alaska, it moved east across Canada as that is a pattern. But NOT south east. Not trying to offend anyone...just the scientific facts...

I've read the Wikipedia article. You can see the device there and it's obvious it has very limited capacity to change course as it is a huge balloon with large solar panels and it may make corrections but would be unable to overcome windspeed at this height. It is said it was "loitering" over military installations including Malmstrom Airforce Base (nuclear). There may be something to that, but there are numerous military bases in the US so statistically wouldn't you often be near one? You can just go to Google maps and view a satellite photo of this Malmstrom AFB. There are many nuclear sites in the US and their location is not secret. The attached map is from public data and the red are nuclear launch site, the blue nuclear supply and lab facilities. I don't know what to think of this but it quickly became a hot political topic and that's why I fear misinformation.

Was it really a spy balloon? Nothing published about the collected wreck to back up the claim. It was so big it could even be spotted by the naked eye. It’s not very maneuverable. It can easily be shot down. It’s not like China doesn’t have any satellites to do their spying. Seems like WW2 tech if it was for spying which doesn’t seem to make much sense.

I've read that the name of tea depends on whether it reached you via land or sea. Though it clearly can't be 100% correct.

when you compare the size of the area that gets destroyed by coal mining daily vs the area you need to store radioactive waste for years - then yes: nuclear energy is highly green +++ Plus: radioactive waste is a material with lots of unused energy, we just dont know how to use it yet....but maybe in the future

This needs a lot of clarification. First, what do you mean by "wealth"? Second, even a quick back of the envelope calculation makes me suspicious; the UK has some nice round numbers for this. Population 67m, around 54m of them are adults which is near enough 80%, and close enough to "1m people is 2%" to get an easy feel. So, 14% of adults are aged 20-29 and are unlikely to have much wealth (probably because of all the avocado toast /s), and 20% (8m adults) are defined as living in *poverty*...

Yes, if there's any truth in these numbers it must be a very odd definition of 'wealth', which most people would assume to be total value of belongings and money which is inconceivable, for instance in Germany, where it would suggest that up to 50% don't even own a car.

My city (yes it is a city with 52k people) does not have the sidewalks and other necessities for walking. I would fall in a ditch with my Publix groceries. Someone on here said they do not count cities with under 100,000 people as a city. This is not true. We have the city then surrounding us is county area. My city has its own hugh schools, laws and cops. Then the county (more country) area has their own thing and school systems. Just because it isn't Chicago does not mean we are not a city. Plus, I do not want to go to the grocery store every day. I spend about $300 a week (it once) on groceries. (I have 2 teenage boys) and i can't take a buggy on a bus. I have only ridden a bus once and that was to south alabama to help so clean up after a hurricane about 16 years ago.

It's that the distance from the places where jobs are and the places people can afford to live are in the 40-60 mile range. Providing realistic and viable public transportation to such a wide area would be at least 10000x more wasteful and polluting than people using cars.

there isn't actually a town or anything named "Cleveland" it's a former county/area the council is still called "redcar and cleveland" however. It's just part of North Yorkshire, now. It was named meaning "cliff land" as theres many hills/cliffs in the area, whereas cleveland, ohio, was named for General Moses Cleaveland. So it is entirely coincidental on that part!

And those most sucked up to by the Democrats for votes, are the ones that benefited from 1964 Civil Rights Act... I find it curious...funny...sad...

Great! New Year's Eve will occur at different times in Ireland and Northern Ireland. So revellers can celebrate, cross the border and celebrate it all over again, just like they do in NSW and QLD (the border separating the two literally goes down the street separating Tweed Heads from Coolangatta so all revellers have to do is cross the road)

Most of the population in Western Australia is concentrated in the south west, so most of the electorates (conceptually the same as constituencies in the UK) were in that region. At one point there was a federal electorate occupying 90% of the state. So *one* person had to represent all the people in an area (as per Wikipedia) the size of France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Poland and Great Britain *combined*. No doubt voters in that electorate didn't get to see their local member too often

It's 3:3, Canada and Australia, but if we take Greenland into consideration, that area wins.

I've been researching Israel and Palestine lately. So far, everyone seems to agree that Israel's apartheid isn't as extreme as South Africa's but still fall under the UN's definition of apartheid. Could you explain why you say it didn't go this far in SA? Genuinely curious.

your statement is showing that you are 100% ignorance about any culture in this area, where Jewish women are wearing Burka as well, and Christians are wearing Hijab you should not speak with that rage about a culture that you don't know anything

It's not that difficult to understand. List the countries by area, list them by population. Take the biggest population, move them to the largest area. Second biggest population goes to second biggest area... Smallest population goes to smallest area.

23% for Czech Republic, huh? Higher than I thought, although that depends on where the survey was made. If in Prague... I'd believe the numbers. If where I live... I think there's an extra digit there. I know I wouldn't even shout at the invading enemy.

I used to think that the USA was not one country but 50 states acting as separate countries. I was wrong. It looks like the figure is more like 1000 independent regions
