Visualization can be applied to pretty much any field; it helps to tell stories by curating data into a form that's easier to understand, highlighting any trends and outliers. And there's no place on the internet that is as obsessed with it as r/DataIsBeautiful.

The subreddit runs on a simple mission: to collect visualizations that effectively convey information. But the way its 16 million members go about it is anything but. There are no fake numbers, goofball statistics, and trivial analysis—just legitimate facts, portrayed in aesthetically pleasing ways. Such a delicate balance.

We at Bored Panda have already covered it once but when a community is that big, you know it's gonna keep delivering quality content so we just had to make an update. Enjoy!

Or if you decide to not do it due to fear, then please follow the rules so you don't infect yourself or others. Please don't go screaming around that the vaccine gives you 5G or is a huge conspiracy.

Thank you. My unvaccinated neighbor just got out of the hospital after 3 weeks. We thought he was going to die, and now he drags an oxygen tank around. He was an anti-vaxxer but has changed his mind. Another neighbor died of this back in April. He was not anti-vax, but he waited too long. He was pretty healthy.

Well let's see... Science shows that unvaccinated people are 5 times more likely to catch COVID than unvaccinated people and 29 times more likely to be hospitalized for it. Where does that fit?

Against my doctor's wishes, I just had my first shot. (I have always had bad reactions to vaccines.) I am having some chest pains and very fatigued but dont regret it one bit. I'm sure I'll be fine in a day or so. I feel good about my choice to protect myself and others. People just need to do their research and weigh out the pros and cons.

Where's the same for the unvaccinated? Data is, in this instance, meaningless without the full data set. Even then the diehards, most of them, wouldn't believe it side by side.

One of the subreddit's moderators, u/PHealthy, took some time out of their day to tell Bored Panda about the latest r/DataIsBeautiful news. "Obviously, these days COVID is a very popular topic, and [our posts] frequently make r/all but really anything topical/trending tends to do well," they explained.

"So for instance, a Nobel prize or school shooting post would probably do well. But a soundly made novel DataViz always tends to do well, e.g. Tyler's recent post. But meta posts can do very well, too. So really it's all about balancing DataViz presentation with the topic being relatable, all the better if it's Reddit-related."

Is infant mortality decline really such a beneficial thing to the only home we have as we approach 10 billion people? In the 220 year span from 1800 to now there has been an approximately 700% increase in world population, from 1B to 8B. If this trend continues what is the world going to look like in 100 years with a population of 32B people? Chances are the world population of humans will never reach 32B, we'll likely cause our own extinction or something that severely reduces our population before then but, all the same, try to imagine what your life would be like if you were one of those 32B people. We can't even work together, as a group of 7B, today in order to make a better existence. What makes you think it will be any different in the decades or centuries to come?

Let's pause and think for a moment. 16 million people is a huge audience. (And I'm not even talking about making it to Reddit's front page). One that many publishers would be proud of. Reaching such a number with just organic growth is proof that people really value r/DataIsBeautiful.

As my colleague Jonas pointed out in his text, the moderator team is purposefully left as a small group of professionals who focus on data visualization at some part of their lives.

Plus, the subreddit treats its original content creators as "first-class citizens," constantly engaging them and making sure they're credited and acknowledged for their work. As always, we provide a link to each post that we feature as well (you can find it under the pictures), so if you're interested in some particular visualization, follow it to its roots — there's usually an interesting discussion in the comments, too.

"We bring a data-centric view of the world to millions of people every day—from important information about the COVID-19 pandemic all the way to a random dude's daily bowel movements—and our community prides itself in that fact. For example, we had community members posting analyses and projections of COVID-19 trends back in January and February 2020—well before anyone in the U.S. was taking the pandemic seriously. r/DataIsBeautiful is THE place to go when you want to see the signal through the noise of hectic daily life,” one of the moderators explained in the earlier Bored Panda piece.

Although healthcare plays a part in this, the food is also important. Let's not forget that obesity and all the related illnesses is a problem in the US. You can have the best, most accessible health care in the world, if people are poisoning themselves with rivers of sugary drinks and tons of fat, they will die at a younger age because of heart failure.

I don't think life expectancy has to do with any kind of natural disasters. These are unexpected! I suppose it has to do with the health system, with the statistics to different diseases or maybe the quality of the air!

I don't know why you included Greece! Despite what you've heard and all the financial problems we have, our life expectancy is pretty high and we even have an island famous for its elderly that reach to 100 and more! Mediterranean diet is an important factor to that and also we are in EU so there are some standards according to health (free Healthcare as the most important)

Even with so many members, u/PHealthy believes that r/DataIsBeautiful retains a certain character, "unique to this corner of Reddit in regards to churning out decent DataViz posts. Of course, the creators take center stage with their amazing original content but (not to pat my own back) fairly strict moderation is a big part of keeping the community unique and also keeps the sub from turning into just another garbage re-posting karma farm like a lot of subs on Reddit."

The human brain processes visual information better than it processes text — so the charts, graphs, and other elements found on r/DataIsBeautiful can be very powerful — you understand exactly what they're telling you. Something tells me this isn't the last time we'll feature this awesome subreddit.

Think about all the success of Pokemon and how it's literally everywhere, and there are so many items with Pokemon branding etc. Then think of Jeff Bezos. Insane that his personal wealth is double the entire Pokemon value. Not Amazon - just Jeff Bezos. Redistribute your wealth Jeff!

Recheck your assumption, please. Did the data check also on police brutality in states with higher police pay. they rank among the worst for police brutality. Also, some of the states with higher teacher pay do have higher dropout rates (Georgia was most notable on the most recent data I found) but many don't. Virginia, where i live, has higher paid teachers, ranks middle in police brutality, and we're nowhere near the bottom in dropout rates. So I think you're making correlation into causation where neither exists.

Absolutely not intended to be disrespectful towards teachers but is it fair to compare them with cops? Cops work in shifts, face lifethreatening situations day in day out, whereas teachers have daytime jobs and face a lot less danger. This graph doesn’t say much to me.

Well, you could argue that becoming a teacher takes more time due to having to go to university and stuff. But I agree that it's very random to compare the two jobs. It makes people blame each other for getting less, although it's people in different positions that should be blamed for unfair salaries.

They should both be paid well. Just like in a household, we as a society should budge to pay for necessities before luxuries. We should pay well for police, teachers, nurses, home care aids, daycare teachers, etc., and only after that, we can start anything left over for that big TV, $50,000 cars, etc.

Their are several reasons why a country can be unpleasant. The way people act with visitors, the climat, the clichés people have and are surprised not to live in when they come, the food they don't love, their bias against other cultures... It would be more interesting to make different maps.

I don't know, I've got the feeling, besides pickpockets in some European countries, and the well known kidnapping problem in some other countries in this world, most places welcome visitors and tourists with wide smiles and wide open arms. It's when you decide to live there that you start to see a different reality as someone who looks different. It's a reality that's not always bad, or good, but a very important one that's surprisingly widely overlooked in general.

I find it a bit depressing that plastic straws which are the major topic now only is drop in the ocean on that graph. Maybe companies should concentrate on those areas where they could really make an impact instead of choosing what is easy and use that as a branding strategy to improve their image.

This is a bit of a strawman (badum-tish). The drive to eliminate single-use plastic is mostly in order to reduce landfill and plastic pollution. Plastic straws may be a drop in the ocean CO2-wise but the reason people are trying to eliminate them is precisely to stop them being dropped in the ocean.

... but then it should not be labeled as entry level. At least to me entry level means no prior experience required, though there may be some requirements regarding your education. Entry level jobs should be those that can serve as the first job for newly educated people.

I am glad this is beginning to come to light, especially in the knowledge based professional services. This has been going on since the 90s. Back then, there isn't much you can do about it. Without connections, I only managed to make my way into the industry by taking a job no one wants. It involved going to an unstable country at the tail end of a civil war.

Maybe people don't understand what entry leve means. It doesn't just mean brand new, it means being skilled at the job at a beginner level. Plenty of jobs take years to learn how to do and you need to accumulate those skills to get to the next level.

This map doesn't check out. There are not this many designated airports in the US, and some countries that aren't very populous are showing dense airport locations. While it's true that many aircraft can land outside airports, the spots on this map is not showing where those places are ample. I don't believe this map, as someone studying US airport directory maps as a student pilot.

I had no idea the Indonesian/Papau New Guinea area would be so dense. I'd think Singapore and a couple capitals but it looks as dense as Japan. Look at Indonesia vs nearby Philippines or Australia.

I grew up in Namibia and visit it evey year. There are most certainly not a concentration of airports as shown on the map, it is one of the least densely populated areas of the world, and there are perhaps 4 small airports across the country. Most towns (of which there are only a few) have a landing strip and windsock. This map is certainly not very accurate.

That was my immediate takeaway too. It's even worse if you think about whether wages meet the average cost of living in the area where the job is located. I work in a super affluent town at a job where almost none of the 400 employees (except a few at the top) could afford rent or a mortgage in the town where we work. Most of us drive at least 20-40 min to get to work each day.

No way this is accurate. Minimum wage is nowhere near the cost required to live on your own in CA. They must be averaging costs across the state. Minimum wage in silicon valley has way less spending power than minimum wage in sacramento or even further north.

Ditto for New York. There are probably a lot of "upstate" towns where $15 an hour could rent you a room or studio apartment, but Metro NYC and Long Island are absolutely NOT anywhere near affordable on that wage.

Not true. The original purpose of the minimum wage was to ensure that a working father could care for his wife and children as the sole "breadwinner" of the household.

I fell like this map is dated. In the last year, everything is up. It's like they see that the federal minimum wage may go to $15/hr so everything from food to house is increasing. It may be we should just skip the whole $15 and go straight to $25/hr.

Yeah, the unfortunate reality of the #fightfor15 is that it started over a decade ago. It's kind of an outdated movement at this point. I read a few years ago that, adjusted for inflation, the fight for 15 should actually be the fight for 21. And, that's certainly gone up since then. So, yeah, $25 is about right.

Usually, you wouldn't do that by choice, except as Proxima Centauri said, by capturing a rook in its starting position. But your knight can be chased out of the center by your opponent with a stronger position.

Very interesting, I doubt there is such statistics, as they do not really make sense, unless a federal state claims full economic and political independence.

Well. Sure, US drivers drive more and have less public transportation, but a big cause of (vehicle) death is not "mileage" but not wearing a seatbelt, drunk-driving and speeding. https://www.cdc.gov/vitalsigns/motor-vehicle-safety/index.html Especially the lack of wearing your seatbelt is astonishingly high in the US compared to other countries.

I've noticed in the past reading peoples stories from the U.S. that a family member had died in a traffic accident, and wondered thought it strangely common. Why is it so bad over there? It's not as if the speed limits are particularly high, and they have a lot of Police.

A number of factors: Road conditions are worse. People have to drive more because of the infrastructure. The infrastructure is aimed at handling vast amounts of cars instead of safety. There is no separation between different types of traffic. Bicyclists share their space with cars, HGV's and motorcycles. Some states have little to no checks on car safety or road worthiness.

There are more extreme trump supporters in Montana. For decades the Democrats have not been kind to the rural communities, often calling them the fly over states, as they were so unimportant that there was no need to campaign there. This is exemplified on the 2016 election when the Democratic nation convention said that there wasn't enough people in the rural communities to sway an election, and they would back Hillary despite being wildly unpopular( to put it mildly). Trump on the other hand, campaigned here many times and took special interest in our elections (even if it was based on the hatred of senator John tester). Acknowledging that people do in fact live in the flyover states, was all it took to get a cult following of extremists.

it wasnt very good, and Marvel messed up the Character. They took the weakest incarnation of Capt Marvel and gave her all the powers and ability of the Strongest and most classical and fan favorite incarnation. AKA they took a weak Blonde woman who is very facist in the comics and gave her the power and ability of a Black Woman who was fan beloved.

This is per capita. China has a population over 4 times that of the US, so in terms of raw output of CO2, China is the biggest polluter. What would be interesting to know is what the sources are - I am expecting the the US produces more from society than industry and China vice versa.

Yesterday I was in traffic, on a side road, when a pigeon flew down and landed on the roof of a car in front of me. We were barely moving, and the bird walked around on the roof a bit, then jumped off to the ground, then promptly got itself runover somehow by a car moving 5km an hour. Dumb bird but I still felt sick watching it.

Does this take into account Nuclear Waste Disposal? A massive problem as the spent Nuclear Rods of Nuclear Reactors are prohibitively costly and difficult to dispose of. Spent nuclear fuel is initially very highly radioactive and so must be handled with great care and forethought. There is no fool proof way to dispose of nuclear waste fuel after it is used in the Nuclear Reactors.

This is a simple representation of costs/benefits of raw materials/energy sources. The table does not show that natural energy sources require storage (batteries?) of energy. I am certainly not against natural energy sources, but this energy storage problem must be solved before we can switch completely.

Surely solar takes up a lot more land? There are parts of Africa where subsistence farming communities can't survive because all the land has been bought up by solar power developers

    Marlowe Fitzpatrik
    Community Member
4 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

But in areas with high population , you can just stick the solar-panels on houses or farm-buildings. Might not power everything, but it doesn't require extra land. Also, the land isn't necessarily sealed up (with concrete or bitumen) underneath the panels, so in comparison to a coal-power plant, you might need less land. Just a thought - idk how the statistic is done.

Are the cost and materials calculated for the entire lifespan of the source? When you install a wind turbine or solar panels, they're up there for several decades. Wind turbines last 20 to 30 years, solar panels are good for about 25 years.

It's a very conservative state where a lot of the people live in poverty and don't have access to good education. Crawling with racism (and sexism, homophobia, etc). Very religious. Someone I know who visited once told me it was incredibly depressing and like visiting a third world country. Nina Simone wrote a song about how terrible it was during the Jim Crow era, and it's my understanding that less has changed there than anywhere else. Someone who's actually from there could probably give a more comprehensive answer, though.

Perhaps it's not a great idea to put nuclear power plants near earthquake zones?

In Europe, Bud Light is considered flavored water (not a beer) :P

This is based on Bud Light or Miller Light, not on real beer. When my friends drink Light beer at a restaurant I always order orange juice, because if they don't drink beer I also don't drink beer.

Why would you waste one hour wages on something that is even inferior to the tap water in Flint, Michigan?

No, Wyoming is not okay. If you ever have to live there, go to Laramie and hope for the best. It is a college town and they probably have a public radio station.

Err.....the Luxembourg one is only accurate if you're taking the average take home salary. Which is currently very skewed towards the higher salaries, up 150,000€ per year, vs the almost 10% of the population that exists just at or even below the poverty line. Including my mother.

If the data for every country is as correct as the data for the Netherlands we can call this First Class BS with an extra prize for aroma.

I also thought that till I tried them. Great sound, and not tripping over cables is cool. However I will grant that they are ridciulously overpriced.

It takes two hands to clap. Apple is free to price their stuff and the consumers can balk at them. However, this is not happening mainly due to consumers being hooked by how Apply market their products. It seems keeping up with the Joneses is a very sound strategy.

As a former Coloradan, I'd like the world to believe our unique awesomeness. But the real reason is the Olympic Training Center is in Colorado. Athletes move to Colorado to train there. (That being said, in some high altitude towns, the air really is thinner. So it is like many of us have been training for athletics since birth.)

As a current Arkansan, I'd like the world to note that people struggling for subsistence can't take the time for competition. We likely have an equal proportion of talented athletes, but they can't afford to pursue their sport.
