30 Times Instagrammers Got Shamed For Their Ridiculously Over-The-Top Editing (New Pics)
With social media came the filters and an all-time high insecurity problem. Mostly everyone by now is well informed about the truth hidden behind Instagram pictures, however, that did not make our problems disappear.
A lot of the time influencers have discreet changes in their images, and it is hard to tell whether it is real or not. That is why shedding some light on the issue from time to time serves as an important reminder. Images we see on social media are often highly curated and do not represent reality. Aside from promoting unattainable body image to their followers, influencers who use filters constantly damage their view of their own appearance.
But not only influencers use these beauty filters. In a 2021 study by the City University of London, it was discovered that 90% of women from ages 18-30 use appearance-altering editing programs. Most women feel pressured to look a particular way as well as the need to showcase a ‘perfect life’. This constant obsession with our looks can lead to negative body image and self-esteem issues, and in some cases, may contribute to the development of mental health problems such as depression and anxiety.
With that being said, fellow Pandas, we want to tell you that you are beautiful just the way you are, and any features you try to hide are the ones that make you unique. Filters will only make you look unrealistic, and in this case, even ridiculous.
To get a better understanding on how filters affect us, Bored Panda got in touch with body-positive social media influencer saggysara. See the full interview with her below.

“That Moment When Your Eyebrow Glitches Through Your Hat”
All of these people are mentally ill. I wish instagram didn't exist, it's warped so many people's views.
It is a pity so many people turn it into this. I follow mainly people with chickens, cats, dogs and gardens. Rarely see a human.
Load More Replies...New pics? I've seen that photo in every post about Instagrammers and their editing skills in Bored Panda!
BoredPanda sadly writes very little of their own content anymore and just copies and pastes listicle items from Reddit. They also don’t seem to review, read, or even edit anything they post, hence all the repeated photos and typos.

I'm a Barbie girl living in a Barbie world, Life is plastic it's fantastic
Do people really really think that it's believable when they do this to their photos?
I feel like anyone who thinks this is attractive or looks good in any way has an actual mental illness. I get using stuff to improve the way you look but...how can anyone look at this and think 'oh this is gorgeous'? There's a really weird thing going on in the world where big brows, big lips, and contouring became this literal cut and paste thing instead of using those techniques to enhance your natural beauty which was what they're intended to do. It's like people cut out pics of a Kardashian and tape it on their faces thinking it makes them look good. Even if this wasn't filters, lets say it was plastic surgery... she thought this looked good. This was her goal. That's mental illness.
Sadly many people in this thread appear to be suffering from severe body dysmorphia. I think the Kartrashians helped contribute to these unobtainable beauty standards and so many young people feel constant pressure due to social media to be good looking 24/7.

Since social media has been criticized for presenting a distorted reality, the body-positive movement started to appear as an “antidote”. Body positivity is the idea that all people should have a positive body image, regardless of their size, shape, or appearance. The goal of body positivity is to create a more inclusive and accepting society, where people feel comfortable and confident in their own skin.
Sara Puhto is one of the body-positive influencers that is spreading a message of what a normal body looks like on her Instagram account saggysara. “I post daily reminders to help people see the “reality” behind posed photos, and the curated aspects of photos, and with filters, I have touched on comparison photos to show how different filters alter our natural faces. To help people realize they shouldn’t compare themselves to what they see online,” shared Sara.
Hahaha This Girl Is Funny, She Post About The Reality Of Her Photos And The Difference Is Hilarious
Whenever I see a totally edited photo of someone, next to a natural photo of them, I always prefer the natural pic, because at least they look human.
Right! They look absolutely fine in the unedited photo.

Load More Replies...Usage of filters on social media can have long-lasting consequences. When people use or see filtered faces and bodies, they start to accept it as a norm, and because of that, their self-perception changes. There was even seen a rise in plastic surgery related to filters. Most of the procedures requested are on the eyes, nose, and lips. “I’ve had a few messages saying that people have wanted plastic surgery to look like filters (eg. lip filler). In all honesty, I have had this thought too around 2 years back during covid where I only really saw filtered faces online but never ended up getting it and had to take a moment to unpack why I felt the need/want to get lip filler and realized it wasn’t something that I personally could justify doing at the time.
I’ve also heard other people say that filters negatively affect their self-esteem as they see the beauty filters as enhancing certain 'in trend' aesthetic aspects that they don’t feel they have naturally,” shared Sara.
“I personally don’t use them on my page and if I do they’re more of the 'silly' ones and with the beauty filters I only use them to show the difference between my natural face and the filter,” added Sara.

Load More Replies...Wow, she looks about 40 :/ That's so sad, she obviously has a lot of issues. Plastic surgeons shouldn't be allowed to operate on people this young, and just generally not unless someone has a lot of therapy first.
I’m in my late 30s and don’t look anything like her. Her lips looks like she got stung by a swarm of bees and her skin is so puffy and due to fillers. Sadly, there are plastic surgeons who have no morals and will operate on people with severe body dysmorphia and problems with self esteem.

Christ on a bike. She was looked weird on Beverly Hills. Her boob job looked like they had an argument and weren't talking to each other!
Unrelated, but I heard that Jennifer Coolidge almost turned down the role in, "White Lotus," because she didn't feel good about her looks. She almost turned down the most iconic role of her career due to body issues. She's a hero! I hope she gets to host SNL this season!
Instead of having to use all of those filters, wouldn't it be easier to just find a photo of somebody you think is attractive, and post that along with your name?
I suppose you have the rights to your own image, no matter how badly you mangle it.

There has been a lot of discussion about the use of photo filters and editing tools on social media, and the impact they can have on people's body image and self-esteem. Some people have called for more transparency when it comes to the use of filters, similar to how sponsored posts are labeled on social media.
“The ease with which we can use filters and then post that photo as a post and it doesn’t state anywhere that the photo is filtered, I think that increases the unrealistic/unattainable standards that people think they should look like the filtered versions of themselves naturally,” shared Sara.

Load More Replies...To promote positivity on body image, it is important to engage with body-positive accounts on social media, share your own body-positive content and messages, educate yourself about the harmful effects of social media, support body-positive organizations and campaigns, be mindful of the language you use when talking about bodies and appearance, practice self-care, and encourage others to embrace their unique qualities and celebrate their bodies. By taking these steps, you can help to create a more inclusive and accepting society where people of all shapes and sizes feel valued and confident in their own skin.
“I attempt to ground/remind my followers by showing them reminders of the curation and behind-the-scenes of Instagram photos and to see that at the end of the day, so many things on the human body that we have labeled as ‘flawed’ are actually so normal, they are a part of us, a part of being human and being alive. We shouldn’t feel ashamed of these absolutely normal human aspects,” Sara added.

She increased her breast size and slimmed down her stomach some - she doesn't look weird or anything in the first pic - I think she actually did a good job on her filtering - and she just looks normal in the 2nd pic.

These poor girls. The problem with this is not the girls. Its the fact that they are made to feel the need to photoshop their images by society's expectation of what women look like/should look like. These girls all look just as pretty without the filters, but they are likely insecure enough to feel like they arent. Edit: Hell this blew up. Yes I know these people should take responsibility for their actions. Sure society isng to blame for all. If these girls think they have to do that to get attention, there is something very wrong. Part of if is social pressure, that is undeniable. They aren't forced to do anything, but the problem is that they must feel like they are being.
I'd say it's all down to clicks. And a vicious circle of expectations. They get more clicks when they are filtered because there's a generation of clickers whose expectations are normalised to filtered photos. The are the victims and partial cause (or at least pertpetuating) the unrealistic culture. As long as they get more clicks for the fake than real pics, they'll keep doing it. And somehow our society does give them more clicks.....

This is just a personal theory but maybe some of them are not able to really SEE their unedited appearance? Lol. Yes, I think most ‘understand,’ but even if editing is subtle, it still reinforces that “standard beauty template,” which is the issue. Even if you love your “non-standard” self, it’s still often floating around in your mind that you’re “non-standard” to a lot of people. Toss in any mental health issues you might have/or that can create…. and that mental health is frequently not prioritized/can be hard to get help for… That’s the problem with this. It’s important for people to see themselves represented in media, etc. or it can create doubts on where/whether you fit in society.

I mean it's obvious it's been filtered, I'm not stating otherwise, but I do think she did a really good job, and her hair looks fantastic - she looks very pretty, it's not overdone.
This list is sad. It's a self fulfilling prophecy, and many young girls end up with ED'S over this kind of content.
I agree. I don't think some people realise how dangerous it is. I've read comments from people saying stuff like 'well if you're that stupid to believe they look like that, you deserve to feel bad'. There are young impressionable girls, who do not know how to tell the difference between edited pictures. They grow up hating themselves. They believe that these beauty standards are attainable, and that if you don't look like that, you're ugly, and worthless. We're gonna have generations of women with a skewed view of reality, thanks to people editing, then lying about it. I have nothing against people editing themselves into oblivion, but they shouldn't lie about it.

Luckily I was always really tomboyish and did not give a fig for my appearance, so I didn't let my mom manipulate me into thinking I needed to be a ridiculous size zero. I don’t think we understand as a society how big this problem is. I’m a master aesthetician (skin treatments) I have to rail hard against the unrealistic Beaty standards created by social media (Kardashians) in my industry. It’s not just teens, grown women come in upset over nothing. They feel like their skin is so bad when it looks normal. They think they’re fat, they need bigger lips, filler, ect. It affects every part of their lives. I constantly have to tell them to ignore social media. When I have teen acne clients I make sure to end my advice with how fake everything is, & to not hold themselves to what they see. It’s not real. One teen thanked me. I focus on skin health. If we take proper care of our skin it will be healthy, & healthy is beautiful. For everyone reading this I hope you ignore it too. My cosmetic injector & I could build a kardashian. Unless you have millions of dollars it’s unobtainable. The kardashians spend so much $ and still use photoshop. It’s all BS.
Load More Replies...I honestly had no idea filters could change how someone looks, to that much of an extreme. Some look like completely different people! Just, wow. How do you trust anything anyone posts?
So true. So much better to try and live life in the real world. Life is much better when we are real and honest and don't hide behind filters.
Load More Replies...My sister and I grew up in a time before Instagram (80s) but we were still influenced by the expected "beauty standards" for women... especially since my mom was pushing us into performing (singing/dancing for my sister, acting for me). My sister had a LOT of weight issues and she even took fen-phen for a long time, which can KILL YOU. Luckily I was always really tomboyish and did not give a fig for my appearance, so I didn't let my mom manipulate me into thinking I needed to be a ridiculous size zero. My sister still struggles with weight to this day :(
That's really sad. So great you have security in your appearance. I hope your sister finds peace within herself too.
Load More Replies...I know someone who does this. Multiple filters all the time on her socials. She's not an IG model or even that young. Her pics look nothing like her and everyone knows it. Sad. It feels like they're both the victims or and perpetrators of the toxic views that society has of womens' beauty standards (NB I know it happens to men and there's one in there but it happens more to women)
