I'm not so sure this was a guess a gust a creation of imagination. I think this was linked to knowledge that wasn't available to everyone at that point

Only people unaware of technology were surprised by this. More interesting is that he whiffed on text messaging and hung onto the idea of the pager (beeper).
the only advantages of a pager is that the device really didn't need that much power to receive pages, meaning that it could be always-on and always monitored.

The Apple Newton already did many of those things (albeit in a gestational format) from 1993 until 1998. In fact, dozens of handheld devices could already do 'most' of those things, all they were waiting for was a digital cellular network that could supply them with mobile data services.

I'm not too convinced this is a bold prediction.... I mean I'm pretty sure Apple has had the plans for the iPhone 50 in mind since the first iPhone, but it won't make them so much money if they just released it tomorrow. It's all about small steps at a time to maximize profit, who knows, they may have had the plans for the technology when this prediction was made, but no desire to make it until it would make big dollars
