The person who originally wrote it was then pressured to have all the others make 'changes' and so take a lower and lower percentage take of royalties. The old adage in songwriting - add a word, get a third. In this case a much smaller percentage. I know of successful songwriters who need to work full time jobs because the songs they wrote that sold in their millions don't pay them enough.
