My husband insisted on buying an insanely complicaed washing machine that takes over 2 hours to do a simple wash. After I had used it "wrong" a few times he now does all the laundry! Not weaponized incompetence, I just don´t want to learn another stupidly complcated device. I have enough, already.

At the same time, it’s changed attention spans and routines in ways we’re still figuring out. And here’s a wild thought: it’s only been about 28 years since Google started. Imagine navigating life without quickly searching for answers. No Google Maps, no quick fixes, no late-night curiosity spirals.

When my cousins were teens they toilet papered their own living room. My aunt, who was by then well off, gathered up the toilet paper and re-rolled it because it could still be used. My mom thought it was the perfect and hilarious example of the frugal mindset of those - like her family - who grew up poor!

So many things we once thought were impossible now feel completely normal. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are perfect examples of that shift. AI is no longer some sci-fi concept reserved for movies. It’s woven into daily life through virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa. From recommending songs to answering questions, it quietly helps us all the time. In healthcare, AI assists with diagnostics and imaging. Advanced models have also pushed huge leaps in language processing and image generation.

I grew up in the UK laughing at Giles cartoons. I still have fond memories of Aunt Vera panic buying radiators and recognising that a) panic buying had been in the news (I cant remember what: sugar?) and b) radiators weren’t something that you’re likely to suddenly run out of. I was so pleased with how grown up I felt.

I'm so old that we used to have blackboards. Now, if you're used to BLACKboards instead of WHITEboards or smartboards or whatever, and you don't know why they got rid of blackboards, hold on your chalk erasers: They were radioactive. Yeah, as the GRADUALLY phased them out, they never told you why, did they? Turns out slate is way more radioactive than any ocean water in the Sea of Japan ever was. Of course, so are bananas. (Yes, bananas actually are used as a unit of measurement -- of radioactivity!) Of course, slate is way way more radioactive than bananas.

Even everyday objects aren’t so “everyday” anymore. Many of them are now connected to the internet through Wi-Fi. Smart homes let people control lighting, locks, and security systems from their phones. Thermostats learn your habits and save energy without you lifting a finger. You can check on your house from miles away. Convenience has reached a whole new level. The idea of talking to your home used to sound ridiculous, and now it’s normal.

Wearable devices have also changed the way we think about health and technology. Smartwatches and even smart rings track steps, heart rate, sleep, and stress levels. They gently remind us to move, breathe, or rest. Some can detect irregular heart rhythms and alert users early. What once required doctor visits and machines is now sitting on our wrists. Technology has become personal in a very literal way. It’s like having a mini health assistant with you all day.

Even movies and TV shows once imagined these advancements long before they existed. Films like Avatar showed worlds powered by technology that felt impossible at the time. What once felt like pure fantasy now feels closer to reality. Looking back, it’s fascinating to see how imagination predicted progress. The future we dreamed about slowly became the present. And honestly, it makes you wonder what today’s fiction will look like tomorrow.

It’s truly fascinating to see how far our world has come in such a short span of time. Technology keeps pushing us forward at a speed that still feels unreal. And yet, there’s something incredibly comforting about things from the old days. A familiar sound, a forgotten gadget, or an old TV show can instantly bring a smile. Nostalgia has a quiet power that pulls us back to simpler moments. It reminds us where we started. Even as the future races ahead, those memories still hold a special kind of magic. We were so in love with Steve Martin. I went to one of his live comedy shows back in the late 70s and he was just as funny live as he was on TV. And we were all blown away when The Jerk came out. You couldn't stop yourself from muttering "What a jerk!" throughout the movie while you roared. I ought to watch it now 250 years later and see if it strikes me the same, now that I am old and decrepit.

In the early days they were rented from the Post Office (GPO)! That's why you still see inspection hatches in the street with GPO on them.

Not only that, but we had a party line. Not as fun as it sounds; in rural areas, multiple houses had to share the same line. So you'd pick up the phone to make a call and you'd hear "So I says to Elsie, Elsie, that daughter of yours is out of control..." Verna Penner down the block definitely used to listen to people's calls. My Dad once had to yell at someone to get off the line so he could call an ambulance for my Mom.

I remember when you could finally start buying a telephone to own and you had several choices. I bought a princess style push button, which saved my fingers that drawn out dialing process. I think I still have an indentation in my index finger from the constant dialing I did to friends, radio stations, and the time/temperature number.

Rented yes, wall no. But I remember when not all neighbours had a phone and came into my mum's pub to make a call. Our phone had a unit counter so they could pay for it (it was soooo expensive back then! 30p just to make a call, and further 30p every 3 minutes, or several Deutschmark, if it was a long distance call).

Here's a bit of trivia as to why: Pistachios were dyed red primarily by Middle Eastern importers to hide stains and imperfections from older, manual harvesting methods, making them look more appealing and stand out on shelves, but the practice faded as modern, mechanized farming in the U.S. produced cleaner shells, eliminating the need for dye by the 1980s.

Just saw a mini documentary about them. The original elephant got sacked for not getting on with the others, who were 3 brothers. The brothers had fake actor names because they were children of somebody high up in the company. They were going to be called "The Banana Bunch" but at the last minute they found somebody else had the rights to that name. Kellogs had to destroy one and a quarter million boxes of cereal with the Banana Bunch branding on. And one of their songs was done by a young Barry White. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OD5lqTIL6mk

The Mexican version of these was better because the bottle was made of crystallised sugar, which was crisp and had a crunch, and then it had flavoured liquid inside - which was mostly alcoholic. They were very delicate confections, that would easily shatter and ruin the rest with the liquid, but properly kept (generally packed in a cardboard box with large sawdust particles), these were pure class.

Sometimes you'd get the cop frequency. Is it a felony if you tell a cop trying to get you off their radio to go suck it?
