Everybody deserves a home. And if that home is very affordable, made from recycled materials, and looks unique, that’s even more of a reason to move in! And don’t let the fact that you’ll be living in a shipping container get you down—that’s part of the appeal for some people.
One of the biggest fans of this type of living to be found on the net is the ‘Shipping Container World’ Instagram page that’s devoted to the cool and gorgeous homes built out of industrial shipping containers. We’re featuring some of the most interesting and creative houses they’ve featured, so scroll on down, upvote your fave photos, and let us know which homes you liked the most and why.
Like with most architectural projects, however, there are always luxury models available, too. Who knew living in a literal container could be considered chique as well? It looks like there’s a bit of everything for everyone, you just need to know where to find it.

Michael
Who could want more? Absolutely stunning! Curious about cost of acquiring containers
Deafening in a rainstorm --- like most of them, but this one is extra.
I listen to that sound when I try to sleep! I think it's called "Rainstorm on a Tin Roof" or something like that

I love this one, the simplicity of it yet very cool and sleek looking.
Its beautiful from the outside and one wish to see the inside. May you please provide the plans,
Like all projects, shipping container homes have their fair share of pros and cons. EMS explains that one big upside of using recycled containers for a building project is the speed of the construction which can be done within a few weeks or months, depending on the size of the house.
What’s more, container houses tend to be more cost-effective than the alternatives while also being very durable. Not only that, they’re much more mobile, too. Transporting such a home is far easier if you decide to move elsewhere.
This is the right use for a shipping container, small house in nature with great outdoor living
There is no "right" way to do it. It's a building material to those who know how to use it.

Oh wow a whole apartment! I think this is a great idea for overpopulated areas in poverty
Brilliant idea. They would look even nicer if they were painted different colours
There are a bunch of cons, though. Depending on the current state of the shipping containers you plan to use for your new home, the entire project might not be as eco-friendly as you hope. Some containers are already worn down or rusted, meaning they have to be refurbished. That means spending money on additional materials, some of which aren’t fantastic for the environment.
Looks like the perfect spot for a lakeside bar with a rooftop patio.
Very nice. I think that decking will be pretty slippery when wet though
the deck is a bit too large, but I like the rooftop. A good get-away cabin on a lake - away from everyone. Sit up on the roof and BBQ and watch the world go by. Could even sleep up there on mild nights under the stars, very romantic.
It makes me nervous that the overhang has no visible support to the ground. I'm sure it's structurally sound, but the absence of columns makes me shudder.
It looks like it's sitting on top of a concrete pad to support it. (The orange part)

Furthermore, you have to be absolutely certain that the containers didn’t contain any hazardous materials beforehand. So you have to take the time and energy to inspect the materials beforehand if you’re not relying on a trusted company to do the work for you and are relying more on your own DIY skills.
At what point does it become more expensive to use a shipping container rather than using conventional building methods
I've designed projects with shipping containers. Unless you're talking about making a simple storage unit or a garage, by the time you address all the cons and make the requited mods to meet codes, the cost advantage is very small and you're left with a compromised design. Better to go pre-fab.
Load More Replies...That's great! But why isn't anyone talking about those two figures in the garage?
That is just horrifying. All the worst americanisms from commercial buildings (like the "I'm a car dealership dreaming of being a bank" columns) heaped onto domestic delusions. I get it's just a student's afternoon's experimenting with render software, but still.
Now this is beautiful...I wish I had the money..just breath taking.
The ‘Shipping Container World’ Instagram project also works as a blog that’s called ‘Living in a Container.’ The founder of the blog explains that they’d fallen in love with container homes and wanted to share how awesome these projects can be with the world.
something small and simple for a get-away cabin in the woods or on the lake
The inside looks roomier than I would have thought. It's actually really beautiful!
If you take a closer look, it is seemingly two and a half containers wide. :)
Load More Replies...“This blog, initially fashioned from my very own enthusiasm for shipping container homes, has developed and is planned to be a noteworthy asset for every home aficionado/visionaries!” they share on their website.
i like this one they did nice if the people who made this see this comment great job :D
However, the founder also highlights the fact that their project is meant purely for documenting these cool shipping container homes, as well as informing and entertaining the public. They’re not a container home construction company.
It looks a little precariously balance on that bottom container, but this would be a great design for an area prone to flooding.
why a low score? it is smaller but very practicle and the jutted out window gives the interior a more spacious feel.
Where do get plans and information for these simple homes. I'm disabled and need a place ASAP of my own
This one was featured on Living Bug in Tiny Houses. I believe there were a lot of comments on the (lack of) chemistry between the couple who built it.
ok but what does that have to do with anything? it's a great design.
Load More Replies...Reminds me of a boom box from this side. Wow! The wall behind the containers give it flavor
“While we do our best to make sure our information is accurate, please contact a professional shipping container home builder for information,” they put things bluntly that you should still get in touch with a professional to double-check everything.
not very homey or private.. gas station cafe? great if your fire is too hot in a cold place.
What’s more, the team behind the ‘Shipping Container World’ and ‘Living in a Container’ project point out that they also don’t actually sell shipping container houses nor plans to build them. Gain, it’s all about infotainment and sharing their passion with the world.
Liking the idea of surround light. Could do with some cladding or something around the bottom
Is it really a house there's no kitchen or bathroom? This looks like it would be a very nice separate relaxing or working area.
The project also aims to inspire others with the jaw-dropping designs that it features by industry professionals the world over.
What do you think of these shipping container homes, dear Pandas? Did any stand out for you in particular? Would you like to give living in a container a shot or would you prefer a more traditional home? Share your thoughts and feelings in the comment section below.
i don't know if I should upvote you or downvote because wut ur saying IS true....
Load More Replies...Another one still a bit too industrial, would mistake this for a work place.
Appealing and like the tub idea but would need be to be careful if you had a cocktail party
different strokes for different folks, I could see this working for me, a swim before breakfast, towel dry, go to computer at the Other end where you cant see beyond the picnik table. go to kitchen and then dining room, back to the office, hihi, then later to bed, after watching something on the tube. providing its worthwhile, if not, a good book to relax, n prep for the snooze hours,,,, lol
At what point are these so over the top they are no longer affordable? Some seem basic and could house the average wage earner. Some look like million dollar homes with pools etc.
I also don't understand if you have so much money for renovations like this maybe you can invest in a proper house? I'm sure the cost of the containers is still less but seem pretty expensive as well
Load More Replies...This is sorta my retirement goal, actually. We know someone a county down who has three containers the'yve arranged and converted. it's a great little "spread" for two people who share one container's space (dining/kitchen/TV) but each have a container for their own bed/bath, so they can split living costs but have privacy and no steps, etc.
ah shared space and privacy yes.. for a family 2 to 4 containers, plus under croft area between for kitchen lounge with glass doors you can open....
Load More Replies...So another benefit of buying more locally-produced things instead of moving them around the world in giant ships, is that we'll houses like this ^_^
