Everybody deserves a home. And if that home is very affordable, made from recycled materials, and looks unique, that’s even more of a reason to move in! And don’t let the fact that you’ll be living in a shipping container get you down—that’s part of the appeal for some people.

One of the biggest fans of this type of living to be found on the net is the ‘Shipping Container World’ Instagram page that’s devoted to the cool and gorgeous homes built out of industrial shipping containers. We’re featuring some of the most interesting and creative houses they’ve featured, so scroll on down, upvote your fave photos, and let us know which homes you liked the most and why.

Like with most architectural projects, however, there are always luxury models available, too. Who knew living in a literal container could be considered chique as well? It looks like there’s a bit of everything for everyone, you just need to know where to find it.

Like all projects, shipping container homes have their fair share of pros and cons. EMS explains that one big upside of using recycled containers for a building project is the speed of the construction which can be done within a few weeks or months, depending on the size of the house.

What’s more, container houses tend to be more cost-effective than the alternatives while also being very durable. Not only that, they’re much more mobile, too. Transporting such a home is far easier if you decide to move elsewhere.

There are a bunch of cons, though. Depending on the current state of the shipping containers you plan to use for your new home, the entire project might not be as eco-friendly as you hope. Some containers are already worn down or rusted, meaning they have to be refurbished. That means spending money on additional materials, some of which aren’t fantastic for the environment.

Furthermore, you have to be absolutely certain that the containers didn’t contain any hazardous materials beforehand. So you have to take the time and energy to inspect the materials beforehand if you’re not relying on a trusted company to do the work for you and are relying more on your own DIY skills.

At what point does it become more expensive to use a shipping container rather than using conventional building methods

Good to see the original container doors being used to open the walls up

The ‘Shipping Container World’ Instagram project also works as a blog that’s called ‘Living in a Container.’ The founder of the blog explains that they’d fallen in love with container homes and wanted to share how awesome these projects can be with the world.

However, the founder also highlights the fact that their project is meant purely for documenting these cool shipping container homes, as well as informing and entertaining the public. They’re not a container home construction company.

This one was featured on Living Bug in Tiny Houses. I believe there were a lot of comments on the (lack of) chemistry between the couple who built it.

“While we do our best to make sure our information is accurate, please contact a professional shipping container home builder for information,” they put things bluntly that you should still get in touch with a professional to double-check everything.

What’s more, the team behind the ‘Shipping Container World’ and ‘Living in a Container’ project point out that they also don’t actually sell shipping container houses nor plans to build them. Gain, it’s all about infotainment and sharing their passion with the world.

Liking the idea of surround light. Could do with some cladding or something around the bottom
