Among all the amazing things out there in the world, the smell of wet concrete after a thunderstorm and the whiff of old paper rank at the very top for me. Couple the latter with my love of old books, documents, and all sorts of arcane papyri and you’ve got yourself a literature lover. I’ll read everything. Heck, I’ll read anything, even your cereal box. So I was pleasantly surprised after I stumbled upon the ‘Found Paper’ community over on Reddit.

A community of just over 147k members, r/FoundPaper likes to keep it simple and does exactly what it says on the tin. It’s a community dedicated to documenting various pieces of paper found out in the wild. We’ve collected some of the best paper mementos as shared on the community for you to enjoy, dear Pandas, so remember to upvote your fave pics as you scroll down. Be sure to check out r/FoundPaper when you have the time and give them a follow if you like their stuff.

When my apartment's bathroom was refinished I added a plastic bag with a local newspaper celebrating the SF Giants winning the World Series and a letter containing everything I new about the building I've lived in for 39 years. I added silica packets and sprayed the newspaper with de-acidification spray. It is above all the building's plumbing and until the wall is replaced, will remain there waiting to be discovered.

The prompt uses the word historical in the sense that the found items document an event that occurred. The only difference between every day occurrences and History as you are imaging it, with a capital H, is that certain historical events are printed in textbooks and journals rather than blogs.

"Passive aggressive" is like many other phrases, co-opted and over-used in places it doesn't fit. There's nothing passive aggressive about this letter. It's clear and straightforward; it outlines the problem and gives a consequence.

    Anne MacRae
    Community Member
4 years ago (edited) Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Exactly, KatHat. Everything in the letter is the opposite of passive-aggressive. A passive-aggressive move might have been this: Mr. Bailey would have NOT mentioned his desire that the customer take his business elsewhere. Instead he’d hope Mr. Jones would eventually come back — and here’s the passive-aggressive part — but NEVER have the item or service Jones wanted until he got the message his business was unwelcome. Not foolproof, but sooo satisfying if it worked out!!

I once worked at an internet café in Hawai'i. We had a few books on a shelf, people could take them, add to them, exchange them. One day a copy of "Slaughterhouse-Five" appeared, & I took it home to read. One young quiet guy who came in now & then asked my boss where it had gone, because he wanted to read it, too. So my boss told him I had the book, then asked me to return it. The following week the guy approached my boss again & asked if I was single. He said no, she's engaged to be married. Apparently the guy went away visibly heartbroken. He didn't come back for a long time, & when he finally did he had totally changed... all black clothes, long scruffy hair... I still think about that & feel bad, lol.

The moderators also highlight the fact that in order to post any photos, the paper has to be found and it has to be paper. No forgotten plastic from your garage. Telephone poles are so saturated with preservative chemicals, it is illegal in most US states to incinerate them. In many cases, they are hazardous and can not be landfilled either. In some cases, they are recycled into replacement railroad ties. other than that, ask a lineman.

What’s more, the mods want everyone to be “courteous and friendly” toward one another, avoid being “overly annoying or bothersome,” embrace tolerance and sensitivity, as well as remove any and all sensitive personal info from the photos before posting them. Sounds simple enough and it’s the basis for the rules most larger subreddits follow. Disruptive, chaotic, and intolerant communities don’t tend to last for long on Reddit (unless they’re doing it on purpose for the sake of humor).

The Library of Congress explains that how quickly paper deteriorates depends on its quality and in what environment it’s stored. Some ancient tomes and documents can actually be in far better condition than a scrap of paper that’s just a few years old.

“Paper is made of cellulose—a repeating chain of glucose molecules—derived from plant cell walls. One measure of paper quality is how long the cellulose chains, and subsequently the paper fibers, are: long-fibered paper is stronger and more flexible and durable than short-fibered paper,” the LoC points out that not all paper is created equally. If you’re going for longevity, long-fibered paper is your best bet.

I have been thinking about this in light of our current pandemic. I do wonder how scary that would have been considering few people travelled outside their countries at this time (I guess excluding europe). I wonder if the people reading the headlines would have had an idea of where it was. I know they all would have known someone who was off to war, or affected by the war. so it would have been immediate to them in that sense.

The Haruna wasn't't sunk that day, merely severely damaged. It survived many of the biggest naval battles of WW2 including Midway, Guadalcanal, Leyte Gulf, and the Battle of the Philippine Sea before being sunk by US forces two weeks before V-E day.

If you read the wiki mentioned above, it states the ship was erroneously reported as being sunk on Dec 11, 1941, same day US declared war on Germany/Italy. The other possible option was the Advertiser was a Sunday only paper (ergo the name - weekly ads!), so maybe they were REALLY behind on the news.

In no way am I advocating war or spouting some Pro-American garbage, but from a historical and world power struggle scene, the Axis powers really bit off more than they could chew. America declares war and the same newspaper mentions the immediate naval supremacy of the Allied powers going forward (yes i know it was the Western theater which was already in action). War is dumb and the aggressors get what they deserve (except the soldiers and civilians). They are poor fodder who their governments look upon as expendable. We humans are an abomination.

The Americans didn't bother showing up in Europe until everything was about finished. People had been dying for YEARS, and the Yanks were busy telling the world that they thought Hitler had some good ideas. I don't know why Americans bother yammering about how "tough" they were - when nothing about the war ever touched them.

Acids from the environment (like from air pollution or poor-quality enclosures) or from within the paper cut these glucose chains into shorter and shorter lengths in the presence of moisture. “This acid hydrolysis reaction produces more acids, feeding further, continued degradation.”

One of the reasons why newspapers don’t last for long is because they’re printed on mechanically pulped paper, meaning the paper has got the shortest fiber length. Meanwhile, the lignin from the wood isn’t removed (as in the case of chemical pulping) and promotes acid hydrolysis, shortening the glucose chains even more.

What’s more, it’s not just acid hydrolysis that threatens a piece of paper’s structural integrity. It can also be damaged by light (what’s known as being susceptible to photolytic degradation) and oxygen (oxidative degradation).

The poorer quality of the paper, the more light degradation affects it. Meanwhile, oxygen degrades paper in a very limited way, unless there are nitrogen oxide pollutants in the air.

However, it's still nice to respect that other have that same right and are allowed to be religious. Religion really helps a lot of people, and most religious people I've met are nice, decent people. Typewriters were a luxury and a novelty so why not?

Generally, what you want to aim for is having high-quality paper that’s stored in good conditions. Cooler temperatures and 30 to 40 percent relative humidity can help paper last for a very long time, according to the Library of Congress. That’s something to keep in mind if you want to take good care of the interesting finds and documents you may have picked up on your scavenger hunts.

Looks more like 60’s or 70’s art plus the color processing wasn’t that great. Plus this is Rider Waite imagery and that didn’t come out until late Bel Epoch, so someone put it there.

Looked up the meaning of the Five of Wands tarot card. A lot depends on the position when found. I would love to know why they picked that particular and what was going on in their life, or in the building, when they left it. Anyway, here’s the link, so you can draw your own conclusions: https://www.thetarotguide.com/five-of-wands .

This was NOT sent from the Floriday Quays, because there they spell it Keys. It was send from somewhere that Quay is more common, and where they don't know that Quay, Cay, and Key are all pronounced the same and mean the same thing for some fool reason. https://www.grammarphobia.com/blog/2018/04/cay-key-quay.html

To be fair, there is a lot of criticism on his unsolicited hair sniffing, touching and kissing. Any other old guy doing this would be called a pervert. Don't get me wrong, I think he's doing a great job as a president, but he should be aware that in these days you can't go around sniffing hair and touching and kissing women like it's 1947.

It's weird you're getting downvoted. Nonconsensual contact is nonconsensual contact, whether it's hair sniffing (which is weirdo central) or grabbing body parts.
