Owner Of Cat That Nearly Died Explains Why It’s Terribly Dangerous To Own A Salt Lamp If You Have Pets

Most people know that chocolate is poisonous for dogs – even people without pets – but there are some dangers for pets out there that are way less known about. The same way expectant parents must baby-proof a house, pet owners know that there are certain household items that could get destroyed or be hazardous around their animals.

Well, pet owners should add Himalayan salt lamps to the list of these items to avoid after one woman shared the harrowing story of her cat’s near-death experience. The popular pink rocks are used as trendy decorations that people can put candles and lightbulbs inside of, but for cats, they can be deadly. Cat-owner Maddie Smith, from New Zealand, shared the consequences in a Facebook post that has since been shared by vet clinics, scroll down to read what happened.

Vets have warned cat-owners against purchasing Himalayan salt lamps – after one woman’s pet almost died

Smith had awoken to find her cat, Ruby ‘walking really strangely’ and exhibiting odd behavior. At first, they thought she might just be chilly so they wrapped her up in blankets before leaving for their days. When they returned back home, they found not only had Ruby not gotten better – her condition had become drastically worse.

Other pet owners were thankful to the woman for sharing her experience

What's your point? What do you suggest be done instead? If one has energy to put forth a complaint, one has energy to look for a solution. So, you don't want people saying "thoughts and prayers", because to you it is not enough. Have you looked at it this way, for a remedy to a sickness to be discovered, it must start as a thought? Action, deed, and behavior begins with a thought. So who knows where a thought, and prayer could lead. Try to let those do what they can, until they can do more. Griping about it may be least helpful of all reactions.

My lamp turns into a melty mess in the humid summers of Pennsylvania. I donated it to a farmer friend who put it out as a salt lick for his yaks.

We got one a a couple years ago and immediately put it where our cats couldn’t climb. I didn’t even google it. It just seemed like something that might fall under ‘curiosity killed the cat.’

Pretty. Also pretty pointless. I suppose I’d happily take a clean one with a non-heating bulb just as a night or mood light. Wouldn’t spend money on one. Good to know that idiot cats (like mine) could be at risk with them.

I havve a salt lamp and a dog. The lamp is on the wall (he can't reach it without jumping), and he has never exhibited any interest in it, but I'll be keeping closer watch on him from now on.

Do people still think there is something special about the pink sea salt called "Himalayan Salt?" Seriously there is NOTHING any different in this pink salt than what you find in any other sea salt. Its nearly all Sodium Chloride, with some magnesium, some potassium, some iron (what makes it pink is rust), and the rest is trace elements that are not in high enough concentration to do anything. The cat licked the salt and liked the taste, then it kept licking it until it got sick. Thats all there is to this story.

My aunt got me one of those as a gift because they were on clearance, I don't need it but still use it. I also just happen to have 5 cats that love climbing. (Yes I got rid of the salt lamp)

If you do have a lamp and want to keep it, a couple of coats of clear varnish should pet-proof it.

Most people don’t buy them for the supposed positive ions (which has been disproven), but because they look pretty and make a nice, soft light.

It’s a light bulb that’s encased in a Himalayan salt rock. Its a myth that they generate positive ions or purify air, but they look pretty.
