Relationships teach us a lot. This time, let us know your most painful and difficult lesson of all time.

#1

My marriage recently ended close to the 5yr mark. I'm a social worker and work primarily in the mental health/substance disorder fields. I have heard it all and seen too much. I have also witnessed some of the most damaged/broken/marginalized individuals make the biggest life-changing choices that enhanced their lives and become success stories.

That said... I married a man who had all odds stacked against him, he met every statistic of what continuous, horrific childhood trauma creates. I saw the person he could become. I saw the potential for greatness he didn't believe he had. I married a wonderful man with horrible demons. I believed in his potential.

The most painful lesson played out over the last two years... He relapsed. I still foolishly believed in him.

My lesson is this...

You cannot help somebody or force somebody to live up to their potential, and you have to accept the fact that not everybody is going to live up to their potential.
