Over the past few decades, we all know the feeling of showing up to a Halloween party, and there being someone else in the same costume. So what are the costumes that are basic, overrated, and you see almost every year?

Harley Quinn, can we be done with this one already?
The thing is that people who dress up as her usually don't know a single thing about her. So annoying!
Didn't know you had to be an expert just so you can wear something.
Load More Replies...S*xy vampire/policeman/-woman/cat/anything - mostly those costumes are boring & uncreative. Cut away a little something here & there. Wear something really thight/short. Etc ... done
Even worse when it's "sexy" something that is not organically sexy. Sexy Big Bird. Sexy Freddie Krueger.
Agreed! I've found a sexy minion and a sexy mailwoman!! Like what??
Load More Replies...The ones that are literally titles “s*xy maid” “s*xy fireman” and such. If you wanna wear something a little shorter than normal that’s fine, but there are children out so pls don’t dress like a “s*xy zombie” around 3 year olds.
Honestly the only ones I don't like are anti Halloween costumes. Seasonal Halloween shirts saying "I hate Halloween" are bad; you don't wanna dress up or relatively cheap/fast costumes is fine. Not to be confused with Halloween Sucks tshirts with vampire bat themes.
The Joker. Bonus points since that character seems to attract all the worst kinds of people.
Meh... Depends on the Joker. A full well done cosplay version is cool just for the time and effort. Just don't go method.
Women/grown ups, sexy things. Like we don't need sexy sponge bob ok???? Kids, nothing. They got the best ones
Nothing wrong with the classics -- the ghost, the witch, the vampire, the demon, the pirate, and so on. It's nice when people try to spiff up those costumes to make them a little more original. I think little kids should be allowed to wear what makes them happy -- princess, Spiderman, ninja turtle, tiger, ballet dancer, whatever, even if they are cliched. But adults need to be more creative: don't be the zombie, be the maggot eating the zombie; instead of the quarterback, be the football; instead of Amelia Earhart, be her Lockheed 5B Vega; instead of Thomas Jefferson, be Monticello. It will take a bit more work, but you'll have a better chance of winning the costume contest.
The pimp costume
A slutty cat
M&Ms. I mean, a a group of 3+ tween girls in different colored tutus and t-shirts with a white M. Reall creative.
Hermione/Harry or any Harry Potter character really
Not wearing a costume and calling yourself a serial killer. Just get a t-shirt that says "Lazy and Thoughtless".
A friend glued mini cereal boxes to her shirt and said she was a cereal killer
Pennywise, or major horror movie characters in general!
"Executed" - 🤣🤣🤣 Yes, give them all the "axe" (or chainsaw, or ice pick, or butcher knives...)
Load More Replies...A shirt that says "This is my haloween costume."
Maybe not basic or overrated, but I'm not a big fan of the princess halloween costume. They're too cutesy and there's no horror or haunting to them. Want to be a princess? Get some fake blood and some makeup and become an executed ghost princess looking for revenge. Add a bit of pizzazz. But if it makes you happy, then there's worse things than a more boring costume
I would like to clarify, my biggest issue is store bought disney princess dresses on kids that probably wear them most of the time anyway. I realise I may have phrased this badly. I like creativity and the home-made. I have some fond memories of designing my own costumes with my mum when I was little. To me, Halloween is a time to be different, to be someone who you might not dare to be normally. If that's a cutesy princess, that's fine. If that's a gruellingly accurate headless man, that's fine too. Embrace the opportunity to be different, a lot of people don't get that very often. And no matter your costume, make it shine with your own spark
AYO SO WHAT IF I WANNA BE A DISNEY PRINCESS ON HALLOWEEN?! IF I WANNA BE A PRINCESS THEN IMMA BE A F*CKING PRINCESS
Last year I was Belle… but i was carrying a Beast head around and had blood all over my mouth, so 🤷🏻♀️
People can dress up as whatever they want, it’s really not a big deal. It’s okay to put your own spin on it though if you’d like. I was superhero rapunzel once.
I'm gonna go as an Odd Squad Evil Robot Princess saying the catchphrases and shooting colored laser beams some year... https://oddsquad.fandom.com/wiki/Robot_Princess
Any Twilight character. Oh, what’s that? You’re a sparkly, fanged narcissist who’s looking for a sugar baby young enough to be your granddaughter? Same vibe as if you used some white hairspray and threw on a smoking jacket pal.
couples costumes. some of them are awesome but honestly? I've seen so many couples as Hero and Villain/Devil and Angel, stuff like that.
Not all of them are horrible. My family dressed up as the Addams Family. My mom and dad were Morticia and Gomez, I was Wednesday since I had grown out my hair enough to braid it, and my dog was Thing, my uncle was Fester, grandma was the grandma, and my other uncle was Lurch. It was an awesome year.
Load More Replies...Thing 1 and 2. Great for couple’s costumes, no doubt. But there are little kids wearing it because their parents made them even though the kids wearing it have never read the book it’s from
Michael Myers/Jason Voorhees. But for additional oomph, blare the 2018 remixed Halloween theme on your phone as part of the costume (I know Jason had a different theme but Halloween Kills 2018 is still the best) XP
Craps, I just saw the topic and realized I posted here by mistake T_T
A ghost. I mean it’s easy but boring. You just cut out eyes in a white sheet and BOOM ghost.
some people dont have the money or time for a complex costume, and a ghost is still in the spirit of the season. Plus most people using this are little kids.
I dressed up as a ghost for halloween in 5th grade because most other costumes are difficult and expensive. i wanted to help save my parents some time and money.
I revise my answer. There is nothing wrong with dressing up as a ghost especially if you’re trying to help your family save money. Even if a ghost isn’t my first choice if that’s what you want or need to do who am I to judge.
Load More Replies...Any costume that is a character Johnny Depp played. It's not so much the costume, but it's just overdone.
Jack Sparrow, I imagine. Sweeney Todd, maybe? Even Edward Scissorhands. Those last two might be considered scary, but mainly Jack Sparrow because of his popularity, I think.
Load More Replies...that inflatable t-rex. boring! you're riding a dinosaur? NOT. SCARY.
my dad did this a while back when me and my friends were out trick or treating, everyone loved it.
Anything generic or non-horror related. I blame celebs who started off the trend of just dressing up as whatever movie is 'big' that year. There's so much potential to dress up as horror or spooky characters, why waste a ton of time dressing up as Thanos or Black Widow?
Halloween doesn't have to have spooky costumes. Just dress up and be whatever. No one cares
I mean, it's the person's personal preference. What if they really like a character, or don't watch horror?
Because people can dress up in things that aren't horror-like.

The basic witch, the babies dressed as a pumpkin, anything that is supposed to be sexy, any superhero, movie killers, zombies. I've done some great costumes over the years: A venus flytrap, black widow spider, a stayfree maxi pad, a slice of pizza, a whoopie cushion complete with sound effects, the big bad wolf as grandma and about 50 more.
Alot of people dont have the money or time for a complex costume, also half of these seem like the costumes chosen by little kids. Do they still count as being overated or basic?
"Thing" (as opposed to character} costumes are often the funniest, and don't have to be complex or expensive. Turn yourself into a bunch of grapes with purple balloons, or a gumball machine with multicolored ones. You can do amazing things with cardboard, glue, felt, styrofoam balls, leftover bones, artificial plants, paints, yarn, marbles, popsicle sticks -- you know, the usual stuff.
Load More Replies...I think a couple too many people are upset that most costumes aren’t horror themed. I don’t see why a costume has to be scary…?
It's just personal opinion on what people do or don't like to see. I personally am not a big fan of princess dresses at halloween, you see enough of those all year and they don't really fit with the origin of the tradition (masking your true face from the spirits and demons roaming the living world), but that doesn't mean it's not an okay costume and people can't wear it, they should wear whatever they damn well like without caring about what other people are thinking. It's just not something I, personally, am overly fond of. I hope this makes sense?
Load More Replies...A costume is basic when you pick it just to get the approval of other people. The best costume is the one you are excited to wear! Do what you wanna do to have a fun Halloween, and support how other people celebrate too. Personally, I don't dress up anymore and I haven't for over a decade; but I'm looking forward to making pumpkin empanadas, watching Arsenic and Old Lace, and seeing the costumes the neighborhood kids are wearing while passing out giant candy bars like chocolate is going out of style. It's free candy day, people! Hang the rules and be yourself!
I painted my face like a Picasso this year for work. I was disappointed at how many people DIDN'T get the reference. It was very obvious. Impressed with my cook though, he got it
