Guy Takes His Grandpa And Uncle To Get Their Hearing Aids Done, Tweets Hilarious Adventures On The Way

As we get older we start to deteriorate a little – things like eyesight and hearing are often the first to go. Although the ravages of time are unavoidable, we have invented ways to at least mitigate our senior shortcomings; glasses and hearing aids have become essential kit for many older folk.

But with age comes stubbornness, and some people have trouble accepting their weaknesses. This is where the family needs to step in and give a little push!

Grandson Ryan Kober did just this recently, having noticed that his grandpa and great uncle’s hearing aids weren’t quite functioning as they should, despite their protestations. He took them both to get a check, documenting the process on Twitter.

“It was my mother’s idea actually,” Ryan told Bored Panda. “The two of them normally refuse to get anything done about it, even though the whole family has wanted them to get their hearing aids taken care of for a while now.”

“My mom asked me if I could go with them the next time they had an appointment since they speak broken English and are hard of hearing. We wanted to make sure everything was taken care of properly and they left the place being able to hear me talk to them at a normal volume for once, instead of screaming.”

The wholesome thread, featuring two cantankerous, partially deaf brothers bickering and messing around is both hilarious and heartwarming, as they eventually give in to amazement at being able to hear properly again. “They can hear each other great now,” Ryan said. “Uncle is still adjusting because this is his first time with them.”

“They have no idea what the internet is so they don’t know they are being talked about! The most they know about the online world is that I can look up the score of baseball and soccer games really quickly.”

This is what family is all about. Looking out for each other and making sure everyone is fit and healthy, even if they don’t necessarily agree at first. Look how happy the old fellas are now!

The brothers are originally from Malta and have lived with each other for as long as Ryan can remember. “They love each other a lot but they definitely fight like brothers tend to do,” he explained. “But it’s mainly because they couldn’t hear each other at all!”

Perhaps now they can communicate properly again, they might enjoy a more peaceful co-existence? Perhaps, but something tells us that these characters will stay just the same!

People loved the little story, especially the colorful personalities of grandpa and his brother

I think it's a sin that severe hearing loss isn't considered enough of a life-altering condition that insurance/Medicare/Medicaid will pay for hearing aids. They can cost anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000 per ear. How are low or middle income people supposed to pay for them?

Outside America, hearing aids are covered by health insurances. There are also governments that have issued laws to prevent greedy manufactirers to charge ridiculous prices for medication, vaccines and other medical aids people might need to survive or lead a fairly normal life. America spents enormous ammounts on an inadequate healthcare system that benefits everyone, except the people that need it.

In 1995, my Bride had ear surgery after a couple of years of having her hearing get progressively worse. I will never forget her reaction after leaving the restroom. "Oh my God, has our toilet always been that loud?"

My daughter had a genetic hearing loss and had ear surgery. She was amazed she could hear birds and hear her shoes squeak!

This is so pure. Good on you for looking out for your uncle and gramps. You are super lucky to have them, and they are definitely lucky to have someone like you around. too many people grow up and start to ignore their aging family.

I cringed when I read this. Just spent a small fortune on hearing aids for my dad, who is 83. Despite being told that he need to wear them regularly in order for his ears and brain to adjust, he doesn't. Despite being told that its not just volume but clarity they provide, he still insists he can 'hear' me and doesn't need to wear them all the time. Despite missing most of my calls, he doesn't wear them. I'm fed up shouting and long for a decent conversation without having to repeat myself several times. When he does wear them he answers his mobile phone and he can understand me clearly. Early days but fingers crossed

Yikes. I think his hearing problem is because his stubborn head is lodged firmly up his stubborn a*s! He's not the only one, haha.

My dad has had age related hearing loss for years. Ever since he started wearing hearing aids, about 15 years ago, he kept needing new ones or needing them fixed! Turns out, he’d forget he had them in, and would go in the pool and not remember they were in until he had gone under water, and “ heard” it! He then only wore them when there was a group of family at the house, so he could hear all the family gossip! Then he’d take them out, of course all the daughters were then forced to speak loudly, and he’d then go, don’t yell! Are you mad? And we’d all laugh and then he’d say, “what??” “What did you say?? “ and when we told him he’d chuckle, and we’d laugh more! But that was our dad, and we loved him!

What a scream! My husband refuses to get something done about his hearing. As far as he is concerned there is nothing wrong with his ears. Yep, right! At 79 going on to 80, there is hearing loss. So how do you explain when he is on the phone you actually don’t need to phone. I am sure his relatives in Germany can hear him from Australia!

My daughter gave me a very nice headset w/ a mic on the left side. I told her that the left ear piece was not working that great. She told me to turn the headset around so the L ear was on the R ear and ... once again, the one on the L side was not working well. Yep...it was the left ear - not the ear piece. They evened out eventually - and I have a bi-lateral hearing loss. Got my hearing aids one year apart. I was probably about 49 or 50. (I'm 57 now). The cost of hearing aids, even with insurance is ouch.

I have a 97 year old grandfather who all of my life, has had trouble hearing, even with his hearing aids. When I sit close to him, sometimes I hear it "talk" back to me! Other than the hearing--and seeing--grandfather is still in great condition.

I feel the biggest mistake is getting two hearing aids at one time, they says it’s for balance of sounds and direction, when people get older there is more anxiety and frustration and the sound is so different and nerve racking, better to start with one to adjust most distributors don’t wear hearing aids which makes it difficult to explain what the problem is with the hearing aid and how you are hearing things. I read that 80% of users don’t even wear them, when you haven’t heard sounds for most of your life it’s puzzling (paper cracklings, flushing the toilet is like Niagra) overwhelming. As a wearer for 50 years I always recommend start with one . Hopefully this will help someone adjust to hearing aids.

Right, because God forbid you keep your phone in your pocket. If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. If all you have is a pea brain, everything looks like it's worthy of a photo/live feed.
