19 Facts From Harry Potter Books That Were Never Mentioned In The Movies And Every Fan Should Know Them
It’s natural to think that when you’re translating a book into a movie, something will eventually get cut. More often than not, the films cut out a lot of what the books spend heaps of time setting up for the reader.
This was, of course, inevitable in the Harry Potter series. You know, Harry Potter, the wizard with the scar in the shape of a lightning bolt on his forehead? Yeah, the movies left out a lot of context and subplots.
Throughout the seven books, there’s a number of facts and scenes that are never mentioned in the movies that the fandom agrees is a huge shame. The absence of some of these is more significant to the plot than that of others, but, overall, people missed these tidbits in the movies.
Bored Panda has collected some of the best facts in the Harry Potter universe that are mentioned in the books, but were unfortunately not included in the movies. Vote and comment on the ones you like the most in the list below!
Oh, and spoiler alert! Some of the things you’ll read in this article will spoil some things if you haven’t read the books.

House Elves Were Combatants In The Battle Of Hogwarts And Fought Against The Death Eaters
The Battle Of Hogwarts was an epic final battle in the Second Wizarding War that included a bunch of combatants. One particular group of fighters was never shown in the movies, particularly the house elves who came rushing out of the kitchen, brandishing knives and fighting the Death Eaters.
I wish they put this in the movie. It helped show that the house elves arent inherently weak and submissive and that they can fight if they need to. ALSO IT IS TOO SOON TO SHOW ME DOBBY
This was the BEST part of the Battle of Hogwarts, it shows that the house-elves are NOT weak.
Probably because the visual effects bill was already tremendous, adding a complete cgi army of house elves would be too much.
They should have made Voldemort pass like any other person. Give him the same death as any of his followers. Would save a bit there.
Load More Replies...what if dobby works for santa? TELL HIM I WANT A UNICORN FOR CHRISTMAS!!
He’ll probably send you a bunch of socks lol that don’t even match
Load More Replies...Kreacher was one of them. Also harry gave kreacher the fake locket and that act made kreacher much nicer
this was one of my fave scenes in the book, it shows how the elves can fight and they aren't just slaves. If I had to pick one scene that was in the books and not the films, this is my first choice
remember they were stabbing death eaters in the enkles with cutting knives? and how wanting to save the elves was the reason hermione finallly kissed ron?
Neville Longbottom Could Have Been The Child Of Prophecy Instead Of Harry Potter
Neville was actually one of two infants who were referred to in a prophecy made by Professor Sybill Patricia Trelawney regarding the person with the power to defeat the Dark Lord. However, Voldemort chose to target Harry instead.
Which brings me to my theory. The prophecy didn't refer to one of them, but both of them.Harry could of never defeated voldy without neville.
Load More Replies...Ive always loved this bit of lore. It was cool figuring it out as a kid then going online and seeing the (much better) evidence for it other ppl found
except for the pesky part that "Voldemort would mark him as his equal." Only Harry was marked by Ol Moldy Voldy.
"The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches... born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies... and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not... and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives... the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies...."
Load More Replies...Yes! I remember this and it made me wonder why he wasn't mentioned more!
That would have been a better story if that was discovered in book 5 instead of harry
Before Severus Snape Kills Dumbledore, Dumbledore Paralyzes Harry And Throws The Invisibility Cloak On Him
Before Snape said the decisive words—Avada Kedavra, the killing curse—Dumbledore actually cast an immobilizing spell on Harry and threw the invisibility cloak on him so that he’d not intervene and not be seen by anyone in the Astronomy Tower. Unlike in the movie, where Harry just stood on the lower floor and stared.
This was a great moment. It showed how selfless and caring dumbledore was.
It also showed how selfless and caring Snape was too.
Load More Replies...This is really important actually. In the books, Harry realizes that Dumbledore used the split second that he could have used to defend himself to protect Harry. Also, Harry would 100% have gone rushing in and done something stupid trying to save Dumbledore had he been physically able.
Harry already had the cloak on. He was going to go get Severus when Dumbledore heard the death eaters.
Dumbledore was one of my favourite characters, he was so complex and secret yet so open and kind. I was nearly in tears when he died. I never cry!
The Astormy Tower book scene portrayed the characters in a nicer way than the movie scene
Harry Didn’t Break The Elder Wand—he Actually Returned It To Dumbledore’s Tomb
In The Deathly Hallows, Harry is seen breaking the Elder Wand and tossing it out. In the books, however, Harry returns the Elder Wand to Dumbledore’s tomb. It’s said that nobody apart from Harry could actually use it at this point, and he’s had enough adventures with it for this lifetime. Besides, originally, it was Dumbledore’s wand in the first place.
That was a really sweet thing in the books. I guess it looked "cooler" for him to break it.
He didn’t even try to use it to repair his own!
Load More Replies...I hated when he broke it. And he wasn't supposed to keep Draco's wand either, but instead use the Elder Wand to repair his own.
And so, when he dies peacefully(which he will because no one can/wants to kill Harry Potter), it will lose all it's magic.
Book was better. That holds true for the entire ending battle between Harry and Voldemort. The movie just did not capture the full meaning of it all at the end. And of course, since Peeves was not included in any of the movie, we could not hear his delightful song of victory!
I was always super surprised that Harry didn't try and mend his own wand with it before returning it to Dumbledore.
I KNOWWWWWWWWW Also it doesn't explain how he fixes his wand, either
He used it to fix his broken want first. Something he didn't do in the movie. Maybe I should try my hand at writing a screen play; I still have that Syd Field book.
The movies totally botched the ending of the stories to do "Hollywood" style tropes .
Snape Actually Called Lily Potter A “Mudblood” During Snape’s Worst Memory
Some people are of the conviction that what makes Snape’s Worst Memory the worst one is the fact that he is bullied by the Marauders. However, it is actually the fact that he, in the heat of the moment, calls Lily, his love interest, a “mudblood,” for which Lily never forgave him.
That made me very very sad. I was incredibly emotionally invested back then and i cried when i read it.
Yeah, being bullied was *normal* for Severus. It was lashing out and hurting the one he loved that was his deepest shame. And he spent the rest of his life trying to redeem himself.
Load More Replies...I wish this scene was there....Had it not happened, the entire plot would have changed
Snape's karma was bad as a kid. James Potter fortunately grew up enough to stop being a bully, but too late to erase the pain he caused an already unfortunate Snape. I wish I could know that both of Harry's parents discovered Snape's role in protecting Harry and somehow welcomed him into the next life when he died.
Another thing: Snape's worst memory was in a pensieve not in a spell to look inside his head.
Unlike the movies, this WAS shown in A Very Potter Sequel, a fanmade musical by Team Starkid that was also a sequel to A Very Potter Musical, which was made by the same company. This is another reason why imo AVPM, AVPS, and AVPSY are better adaptations of the books than the movies, even if they're parody.
Dudley And Harry’s Relationship Wasn’t All Negative As The Two Shared A Touching Moment When Dudley Thanked Him For Saving His Life
At one point, Dudley was attacked by the Dementors and Harry saved him. He ended up thanking Harry and shaking his hand when the Order of the Phoenix was escorting the Dursleys into hiding. Harry thought that such an awkward thanks was the Dursleys’ equivalent of a genuine thanks. This never made the cut, but it was filmed.
That was one of the best moments of the books. It really showed true growth in dudley. He really changed in only a few years
This is the one scene I was most angry about not making the cut because it brings a sort of closure to their relationship. I could see that some point in the future Dudley actually being ok with magic, even going to Harry and Ginny's house for Christmas.
And left Harry a cup of tea outside his bedroom door, which Harry had assumed was some sort of booby trap XD

Hermione Founded The Society For The Promotion Of Elfish Welfare
Hermione Granger doesn’t tolerate injustice—so much, in fact, that she established S.P.E.W., the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare, which fought for the equality of house elves. This was prompted by an act of great injustice that she saw in the 1994 Quidditch World Cup, whereby Barty Crouch treated the family’s house elf Winky cruelly.
Yes and the whole storyline concludes in a way that makes her right all along.
Load More Replies...SPEW was a HUGE thing in the 4th book! it said so much about hermione's charactor and provided a plot out side of the only THREE days of the tournament that were in the movie.
Rita Skeeter Is An Unregistered Animagus Who Would Transform Into A Beetle To Collect Information
Rita Skeeter is a journalist for the Daily Prophet and an unregistered Animagus who would often turn into a beetle and snoop around to learn people’s secrets for her articles. This is never mentioned in the movies, but there are speculations of it being hinted at in The Goblet Of Fire when Skeeter conducts an interview with Harry and as she shoves him into a broom cupboard, she says “you should feel right at home, then,” possibly meaning that she knows Harry used to live in a cupboard under the stairs. The only way she could have known that is by listening to anyone who knew about it and mentioned the fact.
This was a great part of the story. I loved when they trapped her in a bottle and it was a fun mystery as too how she got her info.
They shouldn't have let her go. If they hadn't than she wouldn't have written that atrocious book about Dumbledore
Load More Replies...This one is super important!! Rita Skeeter loses her job because of her being an Animagus
I actually re-read that book recently and wish it was in the movies
It must of been SO hard to find a beetle to put in a few scenes. Oh wait, it wouldn't have.
Didn't Hermione trap rita in a bottle when she was in her animagus forme?
THIS IS SO IMPORTANT. They just leave the movie watchers hanging, not ever solving the mystery!
Harry’s Aunt Petunia Wrote Dumbledore A Letter Of Request To Attend Hogwarts
When Petunia’s sister Lily, Harry’s mom, got a letter from Hogwarts confirming she was a witch, Petunia also wrote Dumbledore asking if she could also study there. She was kindly rejected and felt hurt that she was left out. It is also believed that she felt so because of her parents being very proud of Lily’s wizarding talent.
This part made me cry when i first read it. It also really helped flesh out petunia
The deleted scene of her saying "You didn't just lose a mother that night, I lost a sister" still gives me chills. I wish they kept it, she is lowkey one of my favorite characters.
Load More Replies...I think in a deleted scene it implied that it was her who inflated Aunt Marge, not Harry. I let myself believe that to be true because it makes me appreciate her character a bit more.
Load More Replies...Hmmm, what will your ego make you do today? Perhaps abuse your murdered sisters only surviving child throughout his entire childhood?
when I read the part in book 7 with Snape's memories it nearly made me cry. I felt so bad for Snape and, in some parts, Petunia
This was the main reason she was so resentful toward Lily and Harry. She wanted it but couldn't have it.
This was an interesting piece of information that no one would have guessed. Knowing it, you sort of understood some of Petunia's real feelings, but at the same time really wanted to smack her for treating Harry so badly. Jealousy never leads to anything good.
When Visiting His Home In Godric’s Hollow, Harry Actually Saw A Sign There With Graffiti On It Expressing Support For Him
Harry and Hermione went to visit Harry’s parents’ cottage in Godric’s Hollow. According to the book, there was a sign set in the ground outside it that was a monument to the Potters and a reminder of the violence that destroyed the family. The sign was graffitied over with messages of support for Harry, which he thought was touching.
JKR thought of SO many minor details that just makes the series totally alive...
Yeah the books are amazing, it’s a shame that she’s so transphobic and an unkind person
Load More Replies...Yes I just watched this last night and I even said to my sister and where is the graffiti like we stand with you potter
They should have put this into the movie it would have been soooo easy and added maybe 30 seconds to the movie.
Peeves The Poltergeist Is Never Seen In The Movies Despite Being In All Of The Books And 3 Video Games
The mischievous poltergeist Peeves is considered by many a pretty significant character in the Harry Potter universe, but he was never mentioned in the movies. Scenes with Peeves were actually filmed for The Philosopher’s Stone, where he was played by Rik Mayall, but they never made it into the final cut, and to this day were never released to the public.
i remember watching the movies and waiting for peeves. When i was younger he was my favorite character
He is still one of my favorites. I was really disappointed too when I found out he wasnt even there
Load More Replies...Peeve can make a joke out of everything.
Load More Replies...This was a tremendous loss for the movies! I especially missed his victory song after the Battle of Hogwarts! That song was essential to the mood!
Rik Mayall woukd have been such a good choice to play him. RIP Rik...
I used to imagine Mayall as Peeves while reading the books. I believe it was mentioned in print at one time that he'd play Peeves, and it seemed a match made in heaven.
Hermione Granger And Ron Weasley Were Actually Appointed Prefects Of House Gryffindor
A prefect at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is a student who is bestowed additional authority and responsibilities by the Head of House and the Headmaster. Hermione and Ron were appointed prefects of House Gryffindor. In fact, Ron was one of four members of the Weasley family to become prefects, with Bill, Charlie, and Percy being the other three.
That was one of the best humanizing things in the book for harry. He had to get over his jealousy over not being a prefect
Sort of befuddled by Ron's appointment to prefect status. Hermione was a shoe-in of course.
When I read that book I was 9, I was so annoyed at Harry, but now I AM 15 and holy s**t I feel for him dude, I'd be jealous too. I wouldn't WANT to be jealous, but I'd be jealous too.
This is what Dumbledore said to Harry for why he didn't choose him to be a prefect, "I feel I owe you another explamition Harry," said Dumbledore "You may perhaps have wondered why I never choose you as a prefect? I must confess... that I rather thought... you had enough responsibility to be going on with."
This is what Dumbledore said to Harry for why he didn't choose him to be a prefect, "I feel I owe you another explamition Harry," said Dumbledore "You may perhaps have wondered why I never choose you as a prefect? I must confess... that I rather though.. you had enough responsibility to be going on with."
the fact that Draco was also a prefect and always took points form Gryffindor for no reason
he was actually captain of the quidditch team so he couldn't complain much!
In The Movies, Nobody Ever Tells Harry That His Dad Could Turn Into A Stag
Harry’s father James Potter spent three years learning to become an Animagus, a wizard who can transform into an animal. He ended up perfecting it and became a stag Animagus. And, according to Reddit user alexi_lupin, nobody tells Harry that his dad could turn into a stag in the movies, which “cheapens the Patronus, cheapens Harry's relationship with his father (which never recovers), and also Snape's reveal later.”
That is an injustice. as a huge potterhead i can say that him knowing that caused some things to have much less impact
Yep... the Moony, Prongs, and Wormtail of the marauders map was Lupin, James, and Pettigrew's animal forms.
Load More Replies...wait WHAT they NEVER SAY??????? so it's like if you didn't read the books, you would see Sirius as a dog and Peter as a rat but JAMES just hung out as a NORMAL PERSON?????
I was so mad. It was the most crucial part! The Whomping Hollow was placed only for Lupin. They couldn't be as humans around Lupin. They became unofficial animagi. Pettigrew could do transform in their 5th year? Pettigrew as a rat would touch the knot and there by Lupin goes right into Shrieking Shack. Due to all the adventures and exploring they did as animagi - They created the Marauders' Map. Harry should know - who transforms into what and their nicknames. Without that, how will he know that stag is his father's form/father? And later realization that dad is inside him and it was he who cast patronus and why it took stag form!
I always felt like that was a "no need for an introduction" kind of thing. Like a small detail that is never said but everyone knows is there so there's no need to mention it. I just assumed that someone told Harry at some point just not on camera.
Harry Used Crucio On Amycus Carrow After He Spat At Professor Mcgonagall’s Face
There’s a scene in the book where Amycus Carrow, a Dark Wizard and Death Eater, came up to Professor McGonagall, too close for comfort, and spat in her face. Harry was near, he dropped the cloak of invisibility, and cast Crucio, a curse that inflicts excruciating pain to the victim, on Carrow.
Oh come off it, you’re a Slytherin. That should be your favourite spell!
Load More Replies.....and thus makes Harry more human. Honestly, he's a bit too much of a saint in the films
Well, yes, we sometimes lose control when faced with such bad manners... especially to McGonagall!!!
The Battle Of Hogwarts Also Included Dropping Crystal Balls And A Transformed Desk Stampede Against The Death Eaters
The epic Battle of Hogwarts not only included a scene where over a hundred house elves rushed to fight the Death Eaters, but also, Professor Trelawney dropped crystal balls on the heads of Death Eaters and Professor McGonagall transformed desks to stampede towards them.
Im sad about alot of the cuts from BOH. Alot of the potential for cool magic fights was wasted with death eaters using AVADAKAGUN. And harry essentially using EXPELATAZEROUS. Using cool magic to fight is something i wanted more of and got in the BOH
The Ministry Of Magic Couldn’t Actually Detect Who Was Casting Spells In Places With High Wizard Populations
While it is a known fact that the Ministry of Magic can detect where magic is used outside of the magical realm, it’s actually impossible for them to do so in areas that are heavily populated by wizards. This is why underage wizards and witches are seen using magic during the holiday break without any repercussions.
I love this kind of minor world building that makes the world truly feel real. Also its just cool to see this kind of cool ideas and concepts.
yeah JK Rowling was (and still is) a great author
Load More Replies...yeah they can track magic, but not who did it. mostly, they depend on wizarding parents to control their kids, cuz they wouldn't know if it was the parent's spell or not.
If you can recall Harry's use of his wand as a reading light while at the Dursley's home, that too would be a misuse of magic by an underage wizard in a location very likely to be seen by muggles! Never heard a word about it though...
And this is such a huge plothole in the books! Why would they assume that magic performed around a minor is the act of that minor?
so, this is dumb... but is it like a search history for your magic? like, what if a dude casts a spell to make his d**k bigger... would they know? im sorry this is the stupid s**t I think about
If it was that easy to know, they would solve crimes efficiently right?. However we do know that a spell to understand what was the last spell cast also exists. S

In The Deathly Hallows, Dumbledore tells Harry of Voldemort’s horcruxes. He mentions six in particular because he doesn’t want Harry to know that he is actually the 7th one.
Voldemort intentionally split his soul into 7 pieces: Diary, Ring, Locket, Cup, Diadem, Nagini and himself. Harry contained the 8th piece of Voldemort's soul.
I'm pretty certain there's a 9th bit of Voldemort's soul inside my Ex

Edward “Teddy” Lupin is the son of the late Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks. Soon after he was born, his parents died in the Battle of Hogwarts. So, he was raised by his grandmother Andromeda Tonks and eventually became the godson of Harry, whom he frequently visited at his home.
How was this found out? I don't remember this from the books. The Cursed Child maybe?
at the end of the last book when the new generation goes to Hogwarts
Load More Replies...He didn't "eventually" become Harry's godson. Lupin asks Harry to be Teddy's godfather when he brings the news that the baby's been born, in book seven.
Remus made Harry Teddy's godfather when Harry was at Shell cottage in book seven.
In case anyone was wondering, I was ressurected. Nothing strange going on!
It is in the books. The ending chapter mentions the connection between Harry's family and Teddy Lupin.
I don't remember this from the books or movies - good reason to read them again.
Voldemort Is Incapable Of Love Because He Was Born From His Parents’ Loveless Union
In the books, Voldemort’s mother Merope Gaunt gave his father a love potion. J.K. Rowling explained that this was a symbolic way of showing that he was conceived in a loveless union. Things would have certainly been different if he was raised by Merope herself, had she survived, and not in an orphanage.
Voldemort is a kinda tragic figure.I feel bad for him but also kinda hate him. The best type of villain
The love potion and the lack of love between his parents was only a symbol and he couldn't love because no one ever loved him. Sheer amount of times tht I have to tell people that is crazy.
Merope loved her husband madly, that's why she decided to tell him she's a witch. Which was the wrong decision.
Load More Replies...The 2 kids who lost their parents, Harry and Tom Riddle. Both grew up in situations where they were not loved and in fact borderline mistreated. But, as Dumbledore pointed out to Harry, the difference lay in the way each structured his life afterwards. Harry gravitated towards love and friendship while Tom Riddle sought only power over others. They grew to be very different men. It was not their choice to be orphaned, but it was their choice to become the person that they each did become. For that reason, Voldemort is to be pitied, but not excused.
Considering that Voldemort was anti mugblood he himself was just that. Never really mentioned in either the books or films.
I always thought that it just showd how all the Merope men were psychos and it is known to be hereditary, but that might just be my love of true crime talking.
Meanwhile the books never mentioned that Harry had guns bolted to his hands while wearing bear paw slippers and a bathrobe. Oh, wait, wrong Radcliffe movie ...
To be honest, I never really liked Dumbledore (This is just my opinion). He left Harry with the Dursleys. There is and never will be any reason to leave a child in an abusive home. Never. And he left Sirius in Grimmauld Place even though he knew he was struggling. Dumbledore didn't have any use for Sirius because Sirius was loyal to Harry, not Dumbledore.
I sort of agree. He's not a perfect character and he's not meant to be. I think his flaws are what make him so interesting. @shemeowsalot is correct I believe
Load More Replies...As a trans person myself, yes I dislike JK, but I also am able to watch the movies (Other than the 2nd fantastic beasts movie... that was horrible) and tolerate the books because I can seperate the art from the artist. It's totally fine if you like the books, and if you want to buy the books and not support JK, you can order them off of ebay, or Wish (I think? I have only ever ordered a chest binder off of Wish). I have a full set from years ago, (The ones with the cover art by Kazu Kubuishi) and my lil sis is just getting into them. She is OBSESSED. That was too much for a comment, wasn't it? Whatever
I want to say to her shhhhhhhhhh, no one actually wants to hear from you. They just want another book of equal quality.
Load More Replies...I've said it once, I'll say it again. The movies are fine, great, enjoyable! I love the movies. Most of the time they do a pretty good job expressing the book even. However, unless you read the books, you CAN'T fully appreciate the series because there are so many minor details, foreshadowing, and character development that they had to leave out. I get that they can't make a 500+ page book into a decent length movie without leaving some stuff out, but if you really want to get all the good stuff about Harry Potter, read the books.
HEAR, HEAR! I've always thought it would be great to make HP into a television series with each book being one season of the series. They could go into so much more depth that way.

I agree! I would also like to add... The fourth film was the worst! It just feels like they tried to cram in so much and things just jump from one scene to the next without any flow. Also, the hair. Why was everyone's hair such a mess?!
