We Fell In Love With Guo Pei’s Chinese Couture And Just Had To Create A Fairytale World For It
We were approached by Savannah College of Art and Design in collaboration with Rizzoli Publishing to produce a monograph for the visionary fashion designer Guo Pei.
While we were originally familiar with her name in connection to the 2015 Met Gala dress she fashioned for Rihanna, we quickly became enamored with her work. Looking through her designs was like pulling clothing straight out of Alice in Wonderland so we naturally went the route of creating fairytale worlds for them to live in.
The series of images were used in an art book called "Guo Pei: Couture Beyond" to showcase her work as inspiration to the western world. As the creative director and retoucher for HOWL, a traveling photo collective, it was my job to bring these images into the fantasy realm.
Over the course of 3 weeks and 13 locations in the deep south, Elliot Ross, Forest Woodward, Patrick O'Brien and I created 130 original images to be used in her book, 'Beyond Couture.'
We hope you enjoy them!

The diversified mermaid which is beautiful. Now I want this dress seems the design can be appropriate for all sizes if custom made ... fantastic looking!
The Chinese designers' outfit on a European woman is very interesting beautiful. The images of the little girls as fairies nice staging and stances as if they are ballerinas dancing before wealth and for prestige. There is the camera work I wondering if there the use of photo editing and if so with what software.
looks like the one in chinese series but this one is western style... <3
I would wear the white dress the pearls on it are amasing
There is a place in the forest near me, it is a huge Rhoededendron planting within the forest and surrounded by water and has this kind of path through it, a very magical place!
There is that lovely wedding dress which can be used for an elegant evening wear or making a fantasy stance piece. The camera work
This is so pretty! gives off those Alice in wonderland vibes!!
Mushroom and petticoats hmm. Just a thought is their paper used in the design of the dress or the top...
The prettiest fashion photo. I love this man's camera and the mixtures you use to touch up the colors in the photo! It must be fun to watch these photos come up in the darkroom -nice and relaxing
I love the dress in the back the butterflys flying off but also making her dress perfect
The design is Chinese for that was my immediate impact when I saw the look. The padding looking back is just beautiful and the jeweled dress. The dress has differently inspired the longing to work the era of which this designed dress was common. The dress in the rear there is a presumption of the wedding but the wedding Bridesmaid is wearing this dress just to inspire those looking that the bride is coming down the aisle with something more spectacular...
OH MY GOODNESS! THE OUTFIT IS BEAUTIFUL! WHAT A POWERFUL STATEMENT MAKER FOR THE EMPIRE ... THE SPECTLAR DRESS FOR THE EMPEROR DOYENNE ...
These are so creative and charming- I think you'd be excellent at fashion editorial work!
I really like these photos. They are perfectly composed and well made. In addition, it is fascinating, as each scenery is matched to the outfit. Each of these paintings has its own atmosphere, even if all of them are somewhat mysterious and surrealistic. I really appreciate that.
These are so ridiculously gorgeous and enchanting! The vibrancy of the colours...the themes are well represented and recognisable. There's mystery, beauty, dark and twisty....💚💚💚💚 this!
It is Chinese couture, but there are very few Asians modeling it...
Honestly its very pretty but why did you use all white people for Guo Pei’s Chinese Couture
Beautiful and very well composed. However, for couture, I would want the clothes to stand out a bit more, if I were the designer. But beautiful dark feel in colorful scenes.
