Michael Kimmel, a sociologist and the author of several books on male identity, including Guyland, Healing from Hate, and Manhood in America, thinks there's really a lot of evidence that many men are suffering.

And many other experts in the field agree, pointing out that men are dropping out of the workforce in greater numbers, their addiction rates are climbing, and they're four times more likely to commit suicide than women.

We, as a society, can't ignore these problems. These are people's lives we're talking about. And it's in everyone's best interest too, because when men can be themselves and be happy, we all benefit from it. To show you just how contagious their smiles and kind actions can be, let's take a look at the Twitter account 'Bros Helping Bros.'

This happened to my grandmother, she was an army nurse in WWII. After, she worked in hospitals, then schools. But one baby was born, still, they thought. She visited the baby in the morgue, only to notice light signs of life, she resuscitated that baby, and he went home healthy with his family a while later. 20 years after that, sometime in my very young childhood, I remember she was tracked down by that, now grown man, to be thanked, profusely, for being the one person who ensured he survived that day. I always thought out of all her heroics in life, that was the most important moment in her long career saving lives, saving that single baby who everyone else had given up on. My grandma was the best, and I was always proud of her awesomeness!

This post should be removed for giving a lot of medical misinformation and just being fake. Yes, babies this small (less than a pound, usually 23 to 24 week gestation) are micro preemies, an can rarely survive without long term effects, but this guy did nothing that he is claiming. That baby would have been rushed to the NICU, the NICU team would have taken over, it would have been in a ventilator, and rubbing it's chest would have literally torn her skin off. These types of posts of medical. Misinformation are dangerous and just ridiculous

This is totally fake. The baby would have been a micro preemie and been rushed to NICU and put on a ventilator and the NICU team would take over.

I hate to be that person, but this is fake. A 450g baby is less than a pound. That baby would have been about 23 or 24 weeks, a micro premi. She would have been immediately rushed to the NICU and put on a ventilator and positive pressure. Rubbing her chest would have torn her skin off. I hate when people tell a miracle story that isn't real can't even bother to make sure it's accurate

Recently, scholars and the media have been suggesting that the Western world is experiencing a masculinity crisis. However, semantics matter and we may have been approaching the matter from a wrong angle.

Michael Salter, who is a Scientia Fellow and an associate professor of criminology at the University of New South Wales at Sydney currently serves on the board of directors for the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation.

He agrees that masculinity can indeed be destructive. However, Salter believes that both conservative and liberal stances on this issue commonly misunderstand how the term toxic masculinity functions.

"When people use it, they tend to diagnose the problem of masculine aggression and entitlement as a cultural or spiritual illness—something that has infected today’s men and leads them to reproachable acts," Salter wrote. "But toxic masculinity itself is not a cause. Over the past 30 years, as the concept has morphed and changed, it has served more as a barometer for the gender politics of its day—and as an arrow toward the subtler, shifting causes of violence and sexism."

"Despite the term’s recent popularity among feminists, toxic masculinity did not originate with the women’s movement. It was coined in the mythopoetic men’s movement of the 1980s and ’90s, motivated in part as a reaction to second-wave feminism," Salter said.

"Through male-only workshops, wilderness retreats, and drumming circles, this movement promoted a masculine spirituality to rescue what it referred to as the 'deep masculine'— a protective, 'warrior' masculinity—from toxic masculinity. Men’s aggression and frustration was, according to the movement, the result of a society that feminized boys by denying them the necessary rites and rituals to realize their true selves as men."

We went on holiday to egypt. An all inclusive hotel. |People used to queue for the egg station. My ex was always very friendly, as I hope was I. We chatted to the guy who cooked eggs when we went to his station and asked about his family and left a tip each morning. We waved to the chap when we got to the door and when we got to the egg station he had our eggs already made. Two fried eggs sunny side up just quickly flipped to cook the little bit of uncooked white on top of the yolk. There seeme to be a cultural difference with the Russians. They go to the station and said "omlet", no please, no thank you, no smile.. They were cooked rather slowly.

I love the relationship I have with my gas station friends. They noticed I was coming and got what I needed and recognized I had a new car. I had heart surgery 2 months ago and they still tell me they are praying for me every time I come in. I even saw one that was filling in at another gas station on the other side of town and what I wanted was waiting for me. That hometown neighborhood familiarity is rare these days so it’s extra special when you have it.

You're in a blue state. Blue states treat people like people, with worth. Red "party of LIIIIIFE" states are constantly at war with the very notion of social services ("Communism!!") of any kind - look at the recent rush in red states to throw as many poor people as possible off of expanded pandemic-era medicaid. Same politicians that are at war with public education as a concept. You ask "...how the hell do you expect a little kid to learn...." Answer: they dont.

Ok. I’m 62, roughly around the age of a lot of republican politicians, give or take 10 years, sometimes more. (I’m a Democrat, so don’t get confused). Anyway, the whole way through public school, in the sixties and seventies, the hot lunch made by the lunch ladies in the school cafeteria was 100% free. You only paid extra if you wanted chocolate milk instead of regular milk. You could also buy extra stuff like ice cream bars and snacks, but the hot lunch was free. That means ALL the same old fart republicans who want to abolish free school lunches ALSO got free school lunches themselves! So how about we reframe their BS to bring out the truth? What they’re really saying is, while sticking their tongues out at the rest of us is “So someone else’s taxes paid for ME to have the benefit of free lunch in school back in the day, but I don’t want MY taxes paying for your kids to have the same benefit of free lunch in school now, because I’m a stingy old bast*rd who wants to try and take my wealth with me when I die so no one else can have it”.

Salter explained that this claim of a singular, real masculinity has been roundly rejected since the late 1980s by a new sociology of masculinity.

"Led by the sociologist Raewyn Connell, this school of thought presents gender as the product of relations and behaviors, rather than as a fixed set of identities and attributes."

"Connell’s work describes multiple masculinities shaped by class, race, culture, sexuality, and other factors, often in competition with one another as to which can claim to be more authentic. In this view, which is now the prevailing social-scientific understanding of masculinity, the standards by which a 'real man' is defined can vary dramatically across time and place," he explained.

I don't usually get misty eyed at these posts, but this one got me, as I've just experienced the same thing with my son. "The days are long, but the years are short". Don't know who said that, but it describes parenting very well.

Me and my dad have been fighting for 3 months now and I don't see it improving any time soon. Decides to not pay me for my work at the family business saying the business has no money and in credit card debt. Not sure what to do 3 months with no check is starting to hurt the kids and family.

She wasn’t stranded or abandoned. She was a 14-year-old dog who “ran off” with another dog because she was not properly fenced or contained. Still very irresponsible of the owners, especially considering her age. Her name was Gypsy.

When I was 24, I was homeless in a city with a high sexual assault rate. I would go to the library every few days and look for real estate listings for vacant houses in the area with fenced in yards. I would then sleep in one of the yards to hide myself from the crazies. I never went into the home or used the utilities. I kept to the yard and patio. Unbeknownst to me, a police officer had followed me a few times and saw me climbing over a fence. He stopped me one night as I was about to make my climb. Instead of arresting me, he took me to his home and gave me a safe place to sleep. He and his husband also sold me a 15 passenger van for $1000 and helped me convert it into a camper van. I lived in that van for three years and loved it. I still have it 15 years later.

I know a gym is someone's business, but if I owned the place and I found out about this, I would have given the kid a year long pass. If he or she was still coming after a year, I'd renew it until the kid has graduated high school, at least. But good on the officer - he's creating change through small acts such as this.

No, it's really not. It's just not as "sexy" for the media to report on all the good things LEOs do every day. There's a saying in journalism... If it bleeds, it leads. Police officers really are great people. We're just not allowed to know about them, according to the media.

Connell and others theorized that common masculine ideals such as social respect, physical strength, and sexual potency become problematic when they promote unattainable standards, since falling short can make boys and men insecure and anxious, which might prompt them to use force in order to feel, and be seen as, dominant and in control.

"Male violence in this scenario doesn’t emanate from something bad or toxic that has crept into the nature of masculinity itself. Rather, it comes from these men’s social and political settings, the particularities of which set them up for inner conflicts over social expectations and male entitlement," Salter continued.

I don’t think I’ll ever understand people mocking accents. I always find them really cool and absolutely fascinating. Like the numerous ways to form the same word, how our lips and tongues have been molded and trained one way and then we go a completely different direction. Yet, the first way is such an inherent way to move that it shapes all the other sounds too. Like the way those in the US say Rs as opposed to how they’re said in Japanese. There’s such a difference in interpretation even though everyone’s saying the same thing. And then if you go into dialects it gets way more complicated. Accents and languages are just really really neat.

If I remember correctly, every cop in the area stopped by and bought hot dogs from him. The kid was trying to raise money for new school clothes because his mom couldn’t afford all the new clothes he needed—-he’s a growing kid, kids’ clothes can get expensive, and they grow out of them in the blink of an eye, so I can understand how a single mom would struggle. The neighbor who called the cops on him? F*****g b***h who was 100% shown up for her ridiculous complaint that day.

By the mid-2000s, despite Connell’s objections, her theories were being portrayed in ways that echoed mythopoetic archetypes of healthy and destructive masculinity.

In a 2005 study of men in prison, the psychiatrist Terry Kupers defined toxic masculinity as “the constellation of socially regressive male traits that serve to foster domination, the devaluation of women, homophobia, and wanton violence.”

With Yiddish being used here, I'm going to assume Jewish business. And if so, this is a mitzvah - a good deed to others. It doesn't matter that the receiver is unworthy, only that the giver is performing a good work, honestly. It would also be a mitzvah for the Jewish customers who give to the fund. And notice, they didn't stipulate "homeless" - they said "if you are without funding", thus putting the social/emotional onus on the person asking. Brilliant and generous people here.

Oh, all you meshuggenehs, a schmear is a topping usually for bagels or just a dab of something. Try a Lox (Salmon with cream cheese) on an "everything" bagel. To die for. I am not even Jewish (although I could claim). Yiddish covers a lot of things.

Yes! When I was a child I thought "schmutz" was a made-up family word for dirt/grime, because it just sounded too perfect, like exactly what that sound _should _ mean. Then of course I found out that's actually a Yiddish word for dirt/grime. Yiddish is everywhere in contemporary English if you look for it

Referencing Connell’s work, Kupers stated that prison brings out the “toxic” aspects of masculinity in prisoners, but that this toxicity is already present in the wider cultural context.

Since then, the return to toxic masculinity has leaked from academic literature to wide cultural circulation, and the reason is understandable. It offers a simple diagnosis for gendered violence and masculine failure.

"New proponents of the concept, sometimes unaware of its origins, tend to agree that men and boys are affected by a social 'sickness' and that the cure is cultural renewal—that is, men and boys need to change their values and attitudes," Salter wrote.

SO SWEET...and the reason we let our daughter sleep in our bed whenever she wants. She is 10 now and hasn't Done so in over a year but she was in here every night for a good while. I don't mind. I remember laying awake and terrified when I was little because the night was so dark and I was all alone in my room no one else awake and never allowed to wake my parents. Terrified at times. I never want my child to feel like that

My middle daughter (16) struggles with anxiety, to the point she is unable to attend school in person and rarely goes out. Several times throughout the day she just comes down and hugs me, holding on for minutes at a time. I never read too much into it, and if I was busy, would often squeeze her then say I have to go do ect.. until I was talking with her therapist who told me that I am her safe place, I hang on until she lets go now.

Yes, research consistently shows that boys and men who hold sexist attitudes are more likely to perpetrate gendered violence. But where do these sexist attitudes come from?

Are men and boys just the victims of cultural brainwashing into misogyny and aggression, requiring reeducation into the 'right' beliefs? Or are these problems rooted more deeply, and created by the myriad insecurities and contradictions of men’s lives under gender inequality?

"The concept of toxic masculinity encourages an assumption that the causes of male violence and other social problems are the same everywhere, and therefore, that the solutions are the same as well," Salter said.

But material realities matter. "In one Australian Aboriginal violence-prevention program that I evaluated with colleagues, Aboriginal educators worked in partnership with men and boys to identify the key drivers of gendered violence and inequality. Solutions were rooted in cultural pride, tailored to local contexts, and underpinned by recognition of the intergenerational impacts of racism and trauma," Salter said. "The program understood that masculinity itself isn’t toxic, and instead sought to understand and change the roots of toxic gendered behavior."

I've done something like that. Standing at a long line for takeout watching Looney Tunes on my phone, hearing the sounds of Bugs Bunny, some kids came over. Their mom tried to apologize for them bothering me and I said it wasn't a problem, put my phone on a nearby table and let them watch it until their order came up. A little kindness never hurt.

You can't donate blood every week - you can donate once every 56 days. That said, 100 gallons is an incredibly rare amount for someone to give, especially at this young age. It makes me wonder if he was a platelet apheresis donor (they CAN donate every 7 days, up to 24 times a year, and could certainly hit a 100 gallon milestone at a fairly young age). Whatever the case, kudos to David Williams for being a willing donor of something that can and does help save someone's life every day.

The idea of donating 100 gallons of blood is mind boggling. I know it's over a long time but it's still close to 5 gallons a year 0_o

Yeah, that's a lot. I'm a frequent donor myself, and looking at my account I see I've donated 7 gallons over 63 donations. That's about 9 donations to give 1 gallon. So I've been donating about 2-3 gallons per year. That means it would take me twice as long to achieve the same feat! So 100 gallons in 22 years is amazing!

Not sure the caption is right. You can't donate blood on a weekly basis (minimum 8 weeks and for most people 12 weeks) and even if you're donating plasma it's a minimum two week interval. That said, bravo to this fellow- more people should do it

Ok, I get you have to be nice and all but this man looks nothing like Chris Hemsworth. Like, no resemblance at all. I see a bit of Lance Bass, though

Well, if his friends aren’t technologically up to date—-and I know plenty of old people who don’t even have email or smartphones—-then it’s the only way he can share them.

Yeah, this is proof that the little boys in grown men never fade away, they just make way for the responsible fella sharing the body to do his thing when needed. However, when the opportunity arises, WEEEEEEEE....!!! :-)

Same thing for women, we want to be just as carefree, unfortunately we normally shoulder most of the responsibility and women get shamed If they're not always perfect according to the world's standards

There's a cafe in my area where if you bring your dog they give you a free dog biscuit. So I took my dog there on his birthday and told the waitress "and a biscuit for him because it's his birthday!" Imagine my surprise when my food came with, not a dog biscuit, but a big shortbread cookie plus a takeaway container full of water. It was only later that I realised what had happened: I'd gone to the wrong bloody cafe, but they'd improvised with a free biscuit anyway, just because it was my dog's birthday. :D

Aww, that’s sweet. Here, most fast food places have a jar of dog treats in the drive-through window, for when dogs are jealous of the food 😊

We have a restaurant chain in the SF Bay area, called the Lazy Dog, where they have a covered patio space for people with dogs and a doggie menu. Took my nephew and other assorted family members there for his 25th birthday and had him bring his wonderful pooch (that he has very responsibly taken care of since he was 19). They even customized the doggie meal!

There is a bar/bistro on a little island on a causeway, near where i live in France, that has a "Bar des chiens", with bowls of water, croquettes (kibbles I believe for the Americas), and an animated bird in a cage, my beloved thought was real until she tried to stroke it! The waffs safe off the leash, without fighting, or falling in the sea. Tails wagging like helicopters.

The Starbucks in our area gives pup-treats if you bring your dog in the car and order from there, it is a little plastic cup of whipped cream! My daughter brings her silver lab and her pitbull with her every time she goes to the drive through.

I love the animal lovers who post these things. It should be the norm - considering your pet a part of your family, instead of the cranky people who say the pet is "JUST" a dog, cat, etc.

I once asked my sister if she'd turn me in to the police if she found out I killed someone. She said "yes" without a moment's hesitation. That was when I knew I wouldn't be able to confide in her after all. You think you know a person, sigh...

That depends upon the circumstances of How and Why you killed someone. ... But if your sister said to You that she'd killed someone with no further information than just that statement? Would YOU actually keep that secret yourself?

My parents went out of town one time and I had a party at the house. My older sister called me, drunk as hell, wanting me to pick her up. I left my own party to do this and bring her home safely. She spent the rest of the night partying with my friends. As soon as my parents came home, she ratted me out. Could tell them fast enough.
