Grace Church Tonight. I Saw The Lighting And Had To Stop
Sometimes I see photos of places and think, "you could have bought a postcard why not just stop and look!" And then there's a photo like this where it's obvious you stopped and looked and it was a moment of such beauty that you captured it for other people to enjoy. This is stunning. It's made me feel transported. Thank you.
When I see scenes like this I always have to stop and look. This one is so lovely and makes me feel so much inside. It's a beautiful photograph of a beautiful part of NYC!

A Rainy Day In NYC 🖤
This reminds me of only vacation in NY in 2009. My husband and I had just got a cup of coffee in times square before heading back to hotel. It's abot 9PM, we had walked all day with umbrella. All of the sudden it started to rain and EVERYONE got up from their tables and went under awnings. I opened the umbrella, and for 5 minutes we were the only ones sitting in times square on a summer Saturday night.
I remember one brief fierce rain storm, caught everyone by surprise. Everyone ducked under awnings and into the entryways of buildings. All the different people. The great equalizer.

We have tons of hawks and falcons in New York, they love the tall buildings and the air drafts
They also love the pigeons that are all over the place! We had some falcons nesting in a skyscraper here in Seattle, right outside an office window about the 15th floor or something. After they laid eggs the office person put up a camera to catch the eggs hatching and the parents feeding them. cool!

Mural I Painted For Fresh Meadows, Queens
I really envy your talent. That's what more cities need. I'm all for graffiti done well. It both helps define the city and brightens things up. Bravo.
That is one of the best murals I’ve ever seen, and I come from LA, so I know what I’m talking about
I know that area, it's technically the neighborhood of Utopia, just a few blocks away from Fresh Meadows. I go to the Kohls and the Red Mango in the shopping center across the street (across 188th), and there used to be a Model's sporting goods there. Unfortunately there is a hotel a block away from there, that the city houses sex offenders at, despite 3 schools and 3 preschools being within 5 blocks, bc the city gave themselves a waiver to do this. But I know this area
New York City is also known for its fast-paced, around-the-clock lifestyle, which may be overwhelming for newcomers. Dubbed "the city that never sleeps," this relentless metropolis draws people seeking to advance their careers and push their potential to its absolute limits. The saying goes that "if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere."

However, New York City houses people from all walks of life. More than one-third of New Yorkers are foreign-born, making the metro area a genuine melting pot of cultures. Moreover, NYC is home to the largest Jewish population outside of Israel and one of the largest Puerto Rican populations in the continental US. New York City is also home to a flourishing LGBTQ community; the annual Pride celebration welcomes a few million attendees each year.

Load More Replies...I'm not from the US and I completely don't get this. Why don't you just pay for your ticket?
In Europe people don't pay the ticket either. Have you ever been to Paris and somebody blocks the exit doors behind you cause they don't have it and pass with you? And...I'm guilty, I jumped too in New York XD but I actually had the weekly card but for a series of reasons I had to go back and forth trough the gate and...in NY you have to wait 15 minutes to use your ticket again and whatever it was a mess, so I jumped. Eveybody freaked out and a lady came to me and whispered "the cops are watching you, they're over there" and I said "yeah, but I have my ticket, the lady at the gate knows it" and so forth. It was an intersting experience
Load More Replies...Plot twist, the cops are putting those everywhere to make people think it's someone helping out!
Ok it’s good that people look out for others, but should we applaud the idea that who ever wrote this is looking out for others who blatantly disregard rules and are essentially stealing? At least it’s probably dissuading some of those types of people from behaving that way.
People "looking out for" others? I pay the fare. It's the greatest subway system in the world, it's amazing what it accomplishes and it's a privilege to use it. I don't aid and abet those trying to cheat the system. I'd rather they get caught.

If I lived in NYC, I would definitely take advantage of early morning
Like that year we had big deep snow, so people were X-country skiing down the avenues. Yes!! And they say New Yorkers are rude. New York just don't have time for bullsh!t.
Same in London, especially in the 70s & 80s when IRA bomb threats were fairly common.
We got so used to going into the city that we just made up a family contingency plan. If we are in Midtown & see a mushroom cloud down on Wall St. hop the nearest subway to Yonkers. We will meet up there. We figured most terrorists don't even know what Yonkers is.
I took it as they have Ptsd so they are physically emotionally and mentally strong. We Stand With You NY!
Um....pretty sure New Yorkers don't blow off terrorist attacks. Is this referencing "suspected" attacks?
Umm, the difference in living in the country.? People here grew up with respect of guns, as a way to feed our families. We were cleaning, maintaining and shooting guns at a young age. City thugs hold guns, sideways, one handed.. anything to look scary in a C-RAP music videos. We don't miss. Terrorism doesn't hit small towns, even the thugs know better.
NO incidents of a gun EVER preventing a crime!!! ever! Terrorism is extremely rare in our NYC. The FBI always know where the bad guys are!

Americans drive on the right and stand on the right. Australians drive on the left and stand on the left. Londoners are just weird.
Load More Replies...That's how it should be everywhere! The left is for passing only, whether you're on foot or on wheels (in the states at least)
Load More Replies...I hate this escalator. I get vertigo easily, and have panic attacks. Something about the height and pitch of this escalator always makes me feel I'm just going to fall all the way to the bottom. I have to tilt my head down and either close my eyes or just stare at my feet. I always feel dizzy on it.
If you ever go to DC whatever you do don't take the Metro to the Rosslyn station. There's a MUCH worse one there. It's 207 feet tall!
Load More Replies...This is beautiful. Why doesn’t everyone who ever rides an escalator know to do this?
Because either a) enough people around you need to know this for you to adopt the habit unthinkingly or b) you need to get shoved aside often enough by impatient escalator-walkers to learn it the hard way. Either way it requires a critical mass of people consistently reinforcing the habit, which is most likely to happen in big cities.

My daughter & I were in the city a few days before Christmas. We were on 34th St. when here comes a tall, magnificently dressed man dressed up like Father Christmas. He is strolling up 34th St with his green velvet coat with white fur trim, the boots, the long white hair & beard, etc. He had a look crooked staff & this intensely pleasant gaze. I think we were the only ones who paid attention to him. We wished him a Merry Christmas & he bowed to us. That made our entire trip into the city.
This is what outsiders like myself don't understand. And really don't consider this to be something to be proud of. Catching that train is somehow the only thing that matters.
"Real" New Yorkers? As opposed to the fake New Yorkers who live and work there? Or the millions of tourists that visit each year and spend bazillions of dollars in your city????
Well, tourists aren’t New Yorkers, they’re just visiting. You can live here for decades and still not “get” NYC.
Load More Replies...And that is why NYC is dead. Maybe if you loved each other as much as you love to complain, people wouldn't have ran for the hills, as soon as COVID hit, if you cared about one another.
Yep, sure is a ghost town with only 7½ million people now

Load More Replies...And You Don’t Even Want To Know How Much It Costs To Keep A Kid In Rikers For A Year. That’s Scifi Numbers. You Ain’t Ready For That One. A Broken System Is An Old Understatement
And a flat-out lie. NYC spends 6% of its budge on police. Including state funds, NYC spends FIVE times more on education alone.
Load More Replies...First of all, NYC has a $102.7 billion budget, the NYPD budget is 6 billion, or 5.88% of the Budget. Average American City spends 5% of budget on police. But lets break it down. Well we have 38,400 police officers for a city of 8.8 million people, plus another 1 million tourists at any time, and 14 million people who work here. 38,400 cops at an average salary of 85K (that is averaging all salaries). That alone is about 3.2 billion dollar. Now we also have to figure in 7,000 administrators, plus then; crossing guards, auxiliary, traffic enforcement officers, and others who are not actually police, etc. At the end of the day 88.8% of the NYPD budget goes to salaries, health care, overtimes, and other benefits or $5,328,000,000, over 5 billion dollars. Just a mere 11.2% go to all other police activities. A Mere 411 million is all that is spent of Police Vehicle Maintenance and purchases, ammo, guns, operating the police precincts, helicopters, boats (for our rivers), etc. It's not that crazy
When people say to cut the NYPD budget, well from where are you going to cut? most of that money is salaries. For those who also want to know, NYC spends 31 billion on education (Not including things like the USDA school lunch program) which is nearly 1/3 of our budget on a public school system where 20% of students graduate reading on a 6th grade level or less (35% graduate below High School level reading), and 40% fail HS Math. Before we start going after the NYPD, we have much bigger issues to fix, considering the amount of corruption, waste, and worse. Let's focus on fixing on the bigger issues, like our failing education system that we keep throwing more money at and results get worse
Load More Replies...Extremely deceptive statement. The police budget is the only item in that list which chiefly the responsibility of the city. It comes to about $65 a month per person in the most expensive city you can imagine. The state of New York spends almost $20 billion on students in New York City alone.
Update: She's flat out lying. The CITY of New York ALSO spends $12 billion. That's $32 billion on students in New York City.
Load More Replies...Not with 33,000 different gangs in America. Those are akin to military units, with their own armories and gunsmiths. Better equipped than most police forces.
Load More Replies...There are more scum bags deciding how the money is spent. And how about early intervention with at risk youth should be more important than trump getting loans to host traitors to our country in golf outings. Give our police officers education to try and help young people, and not just put them in a box if they are pushed into a life of crime.

Last time I was in NYC was 20 years ago. Old ladies with walkers were running me over because I was not walking fast enough. I Knew then NYC was not foe me.
I live in Kansas now, I use a walker and still speed over everyone. LOL
Load More Replies...As a former Long Islander, it's fast paced there too. Moving to other areas is a bit of a learning curve. People walk and talk like they have all the time in the world. It's soothing once you get used to it. The other side is non-NY people seem to be oblivious of people around them. They block sidewalks, streets, store aisles etc. to chat or just to veg out. Left hand lane? I will drive any speed I want here, no matter how many cars are piling up behind me and having to pass on the right.
That’s the one part of NY that’s never faded away, everyone always thinks I walk too fast but really they just are too slow
People where i live keep telling me i walk too fast. Need to go to nyc just for the chance of being told i walk too slow, it would be so novel.
I live in the countryside in UK because I like peace and quiet. All these posts are stressing me just looking at them.
I’m gonna stick with my very calm, quiet, peaceful, inexpensive, clean city, within walking distance to multiple parks, hikes, beaches and gardens, museums, plays, symphonies etc etc etc. And we can walk as fast or slow as we please instead of having people yell at us and push us because we’re not going at their pace. NYC, I wish you the best.

IDK how people are ok living this way. This place is a nightmare... Give me the country.
Man, I walk by these all the time in Philly, especially in summer when everything smells and I just don't get it. Why would you want to sit out in the heat and stink while people walk right next to you while you just sit there and pretend that you don't see any of it?! Nah, I'll take the air conditioning and a booth, and you know a wall between me and people
Ok David H, granted that "it's trash day, and they have to have the stuff out at certain times for pickup..." but that doesn't explain what type of people - full tables of them ! - would happily eat right beside not necessarily perfectly hermetically sealed bags of restaurant trash...?!?

How Often Do You See This?
A work issued phone is a vital tool to access information via the police intranet. Looking at their phone doesn't mean they are goofing off.
What I see is bored baby sitters amusing themselves between trains. They wouldn't need to stand around subway stations if some people were not horrible to each other.
Unfortunately you are right. They need to be there, but fortunately are not required to work all the time. Like your fire insurance, you can be happy, if they are not needed.
Load More Replies...Just please also consider that while some or maybe alot are definitely goofing off, others are just updating loved ones on how their shift is going and that they're ok. These shifts can be really rough on family.

How does London keep rats out of the tube? I hear NYC is hiring a rat czar.

I was glad there was also pictures, that made me feel very satisfied that I don't live there. In Copenhagen I have NEVER seen policemen on the subway stations.
I used to fly into LaGuardia and head to Manhattan for work purposes. It always felt as though I was flying into an art farm, the feeling of too many people who are superbusy. However, I did think it would be a fantastic place to live if I was independently wealthy. I'd live there for a year and see all the museums and all the plays and eat out at different restaurants all the time. Then I'd fly to another city and live there for a while...Paris? Moscow? London?
Big cities are so not my thing. Far too much going on all the time, and not enough meaningful human interaction even tho you're surrounded by people 24/7
