Actully, every year the moon drifts a little further from earth. But by the time it leaves, our planet will be dead or totally dying. In other words, the moon will only leave when earth needs it most.
The sad thing is the moon and the earth are getting more distant all the time. But when the Sun starts turning red and bullying both of them the moon will run back into the earth's arms -- but only to then be tragically torn apart by the spurned earth's gravity. It's just depressing, over all.
Actually, I just heard that the moon will not be there forever, or always not.
