Working at a pet store might seem like the most relaxing job ever - you get to hug puppies, talk with parrots, feed fluffy bunnies and watch aquarium fishes all day long. We all know that this is not entirely true, and even pet store employees might get bored from all the animal friendships from time time. Now, what happens when you are bored at work? Oh, but your creativity spikes and you can come up with some ingenious jokes as good as these funny names for animals spotted in some aquarium fish store.

Adding humor to what is a very cruel practice. Bettas need room to swim, places to hide, and good quality water, none of which they get in those little plastic cups. None of the fish in any of the photos look happy or especially healthy. Stores continue this abusive practice because it is convenient.
I have never seen any pets stores that have passable conditions for any of the animals. All the rodents have far to little space, bad wheels, bad food, litter that can give them respiratory infections, and no stimulation. The (very social) birds are often kept alone in a small cage with a few chew toys that they don't really care about because they are miserable. None of the animals get let out to play like they need to be. The fish often have dead fish floating at the top. They just don't care at all. I hate pet stores so much and always just want to take all the animals home with me so I can spoil them.
Aunt Messy, if you are keeping your Betta in two gallons are less, they will be very stressed by water changes. If you move your Betta to a tank that is 5 gallons or more, you will probably find your fish does not sleep so much. Smaller tanks are very stressing. People mistakenly believe they live in small bodies of water because they were observed in small bodies of water in dry seasons. Under normal conditions, they live in extensive waterways with lots of room to roam. They simply can survive the temporary less-than-ideal situations that sometimes occur in their native environment. That does not mean that they thrive in small amounts of water. Betta need at minimum 5 gallons. More is ideal. While they do not prefer a lot of movement in the water, they do need some aeration, which is another reason they need so much space - to give them proper aeration but also space to stay out of the flow when they want to.
Part of the problem is pet stores also sell those tiny 1-2 gallon fish tanks and fish bowls as if those are reasonable living quarters for a fish. They are not. Pet stores should be more responsible about educating their customers on the proper care of the animals and not sell gear unsuitable to pets.
@Cassie. The bettas I've had live between 4 and 5 years in perfect health. Since their "official" maximum life span is only 2 1/2 - 3 years, I think we're ok.

I don't really have a problem with keeping them in the store like this, until they're bought (these cups actually look bigger than the jars I usually see them in in pet stores), because I know it's kinda impossible to have a large aquarium for each Betta in your store (as you can't just put males together). As long as you know they'll get a large enough aquarium (at least 60-80cm for a long fin) with loads of plants at the home they're being sold to. Unfortunately, that's often not the case. :-(

There is an equation somewhere as to how many inches of fish can be safely kept per volume of water, particularly where the water quality is constantly monitored and optimum quality. Fish have a very short term-memory - they never realise they are bored. This business has valuable fish - they wont just risk their health and lose money on them. Just reckon the staff were more bored than the fish to name them all.

Most (slightly larger) fish can even recognize faces, including goldfish and bettas. (can I add that I have a graduate degree in biology, just to be sure? ;-) ).

Actually, bettas are territorial and don't require a lot of space. A gallon or two is more than ample. They do like things to hide behind - anti acid moss balls work well for them, and they do sleep a LOT. When they sleep they like to be supported, so a fake leaf on a suction cup about 3" below the surface of the water gives them a napping spot. ...///... Bettas hail from river eddies and still areas. They don't like super-fresh water and mine gets very cranky when I change his water. I've observed that every betta I've ever had hates water changes.
I'm sorry, but a lot of what you said is untrue. Bettas live in a variety of environments, and only a few live in small still bodies of water. The reason you here about that so often is because they will often jump into puddles and shallow areas, but they usually die sooner when they do. They thrive in larger tanks with circulation. I have 12 bettas as pets, and I also breed them to sell.

I feel so bad for Beta fish. Their natural environment is nothing like a small plastic container or small fish bowl. I mean, no fish's natural environment is...but still
I'm not trying to defend people keeping betta's in tiny containers (because I know they love their space). We used to have crown tails, then only bettas with shorter tails because they usually seem in better shape, and now we have wine red bettas (Betta coccina's). You know in the wild they (are able to) survive in TINY, hot amounts of water during the dry season? That's why they have this labyrinth organ to breathe some air above water. That doesn't mean they'll be happy under those circumstances though, so yeah, you shouldn't keep them like this... Just wanted to say something about they natural environment, because sometimes, a tiny amount of water IS their natural environment. Just not all year long :P

Please don't keep betta fish in those tiny little cups. Waste and uneaten food breaks down in them over time, releasing ammonia, which is poisonous to bettas. Plus, it's just cruel, keeping them in such a tiny container for a good chunk of their lives.
why are they in those awful containers ? Is this common practice or is it an illegal petshop ?
Common practice. They'll kill eachother if kept together but doesn't mean that they can't have little seperate tanks with a filter. My fish store gets it sort of. $15+ ones get that buy $10 or less gets this kind of treatment
Keeping fish like that, even for a short period of time, is a crime. It needs to be forbidden.

As an ex fishkeeper I can appreciate the requirement to keep healthy valuable fish in isolation or quarantine for reasonably short periods to prevent cross-infection from 1 unhealthy one - fungus, parasites etc - or even attacks from other fish.Then any medication required can be easily administered, ie in the water or food (you can get antibiotic fish food) and their individual food intake monitored. They can very easily tell which fish is which. Plus their health condition can be very clearly monitored and there isnt the stress on the fish of being caught so so a buyer can confirm it's health and appearance from all angles. Provided the water conditions are perfect - and these look pretty good - the fish will come to no harm from a few days of solitary. The stress of being regularly netted for examination is worse for them. It looks as if the seller/dealer is doing everything neccessary to temporarily maintain the health of these fish and can guaratee it to the buyer. They are not keeping them in these conditions long term.
