After Their Neighbors Illegally Filled Their Parking Lot, This Resident Froze Them In Place
Interview3, 2, 1! Happy New Year! New Year’s is one of the most exciting days of the year for many people. It’s an opportunity for a fresh start, and a great time to celebrate the accomplishments you’ve made and relationships you’ve fostered over the past year. However, as some Chicago residents learned the hard way, if you don’t end the year with your car parked in an appropriate location, you might start your year with a trip to the impound lot.
2 days ago, Reddit user BrightRick posted on the Pro Revenge subreddit sharing the story of how he took matters into his own hands one New Year’s Eve about 20 years ago after partygoers illegally filled his parking lots. Below, you can read the full story, as well as an interview with BrightRick, and decide whether you think this revenge was justified or not. Then if you’re looking for another Bored Panda piece featuring parking drama, be sure to check out this story next.
This apartment owner recently shared the story of how one New Year’s Eve he found his parking lot full of strangers’ cars, despite having a sign warning that a tow truck would be called

So he decided to pull out a hose and some sprinklers to freeze all the cars and the street, leaving the guests stranded
Eventually, the cops were called and every driver’s car was ticketed and towed
Finding parking, especially in a big city on a holiday, can be an extremely stressful task. Sometimes drivers just take whatever spots they can find, even if there’s a risk of getting ticketed or towed. “Ah, it’s New Year’s. They won’t tow me today,” some guests probably assumed, even if they had noticed the signs. But especially in Chicago, during the winter, tow trucks are a hot commodity.
The city actually enforces winter parking bans between December 1st to April 1st, regardless of snow levels. These make finding a spot even harder than usual for residents, while towing companies get to rack in big bucks. In 2021, over 200 cars were towed on the first night of Chicago’s winter parking ban. And although this particular story happened about 20 years ago, understanding how desperate these partygoers must have been to find parking might help the story make sense.
Some readers found the story hilarious and applauded the apartment owner for his creativity
We reached out to BrightRick to hear his side of the story and what inspired him to tell this story now. “I’m a fan of the YouTube channel,” he told us. “Love the narrator’s voice and presentation. Each time I hear a story I’m thinking ‘I have a couple of great ones I should share’.” We also asked if he had any more issues with the people who parked in his lot after this incident. “He complained to city hall (small city, 22,000 people at the time) that we were treating a public parking lot like it was our own. He was informed by city hall that it was a private parking lot and he was trespassing. We were paid a visit by a city inspector when they were double checking – there IS public parking down the street. After this we never heard from him again.”
Lastly, we asked BrightRick if he thinks disputes like this are common and what the best way to deal with them is. “Parking disputes, in the winter, in the Chicago area? ALWAYS,” he said. “Google ‘Dibs Chicago Winter’. It’s like that whenever it snows more than a few inches. That year we had a LOT of snow. It’s one of the reasons my dad (the original owner of the buildings) purchased an empty lot to use as parking.” In terms of handling this situation, BrightRick told us revenge was the last resort. “We tried talking to the person several times. Communication before revenge. Tried blocking him in to make a point and to force him to talk to us. That’s when he drove though our hedges. Then we put up no parking signs. He still parked there. Then we put up the towing signs. We tried everything before this.”
When it comes to this story, readers have been split about the situation was handled. Do you think these partiers deserved to have their cars frozen over for illegally parking one time, or was BrightRick justified after trying everything else? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments down below, and if you’ve ever been in a similar situation, let us know how you reacted.
Other readers thought this revenge went a little too far
NTA, there were signs up. It would be one thing if there were no signs, but in this case people had no excuse and there and relying on the friend telling them to park there is nonsense
We have a pretty big yard. But if we have a party and invite friends over, I ask the neighbors if it's OK to park in front of their houses and I bring them cake in return.
It seems like common sense to just fill the neighbors in. Most of ours did except the neighbor that lived across from us. They were always rude and inconsiderate. So when their friends blocked us and my other neighbors in, the other neighbors took dog poo and smeared it all over the handles and locks of the invading cars in the middle of the night. I can honestly say we never had a problem with them parking in our driveways again. And they never took any revenge on us because they knew we didn't do it since we didn't have any pets at the time.
Load More Replies...The ones who are mad at him are missing the point that he had signs posted that it was restricted parking in your car would be towed. Just because it's New Year's Eve doesn't mean you have free reign to break the rules. Even if a friend told me it was okay to park and a certain parking spot if there's a sign saying you will be towed that I'm expecting I'm going to be towed.
Serves them right. I'm baffled by idiots that park like they owned the place. Can't you walk motherf*ck*r?
I think those of you who thought this was a D**K move by the apartment owner need to reread the story. He had SIGNS UP THAT SAID NO PARKING OR BE TOWED!!! THE PEOPLE WHO PARKED THERE WERE WARNED!!!! It doesn’t even matter if the jerk who had driven over the bushes was involved or not! The signs were up! I think the stunt was extremely creative!!! Especially since the local towing companies were so busy since it was NYE! Sometimes, you just have to take matters into your own hands. This property belonged to someone who had paid for it and I’m sure paid taxes on it as well! How do those of you who frowned on this even know if the illegal parking was done by poor people? We have no idea of their socioeconomic status. AND many of them probably were drinking and should not have been driving (but that’s really irrelevant here). I think it was a fair punishment!
I dont get why anyone would park on someone else's property and get mad when something happens.
Sometimes you gotta actually do something that'll get their attention. Asking nicely doesn't always work. Putting up signs doesn't always work. The icing worked after the nice attempts. I see nothing wrong with this
Next on Unsolved Mysteries, how did these people get both driver's licenses AND motor vehicles while being completely ILLITERATE? Isn't there an EYE exam, a SIGN exam, and a WRITTEN exam before the road exam? Yet these people failed ALL THREE and still got their driver's licenses out of their cereal boxes.
I'm beyond impressed with this one. Revenge on the douchebag that ran through your bushes had that one coming. The mindless sheepple that blocked the parking lot as well as the street had it coming too. Honestly, they should have known better. It doesn't get cold enough where I live to pull this one off but I'm putting it on my bucket list anyway. People have zero respect for other folks s**t nowadays. They just go all in never thinking that just because they can do it doesn't mean that they should. I've always said that if stupidity hurts or costs lots of cash it'll make you take a triple take before doing that same thing again. As someone already mentioned, if you're gonna play stupid games you're gonna win stupid prizes.
Common sense would have prevailed if the notice of towing of cars not allowed. If it's not the party's lot but down the way, are these folks 'a special kind of stupid'? Then they got what's coming to them, maybe their parents can explain it to them in a way they understand.
People who live in a city should know free parking don’t exist. They got what they deserved.
I mean they posted "DON'T PARK OR BE TOWED" So, if they followed their friends advice it's their own fault! They can get the money from the "friend" or accept their L. I'm not sure how commenters mad at the owner aren't getting that. Oh Well! Not everyone can read I guess.
Why listen to your friend when you can see with your eyes?? I don't feel bad for the party goers. I've been in similar situations and the cost and responsibilities fall on the owner of the cars- not the host of the event
I don't understand all the people saying they didn't deserve it because their friend told them to park there. They still should have seen all the "No parking or your car will be towed" signs, and they chose to ignore the signs.
I like the guy who suggested putting up signs charging exorbitant rates for parking as a better solution - that is genius actually. Yes, what he did was a little mean and a bit over the top, but heck, I’m not going to deny that it was enjoyable to read about. We’ve all wanted to get revenge on idiots ourselves at some point.
For all of the folks above in the story saying OP is the AH and the iced drivers are innocent: OP had his property posted for no non-tenants parking there. He had every right. NTA
I lived in Hollywood for a few years, in an apartment on a side street about a mile from the Hollywood Bowl. People would park on our street all the time for Bowl events. Our building didn't have any parking so tenants had to park on the street. One evening one of my neighbors (Lisa) was backing into an empty parking spot when a woman pulled in and parked in it. Lisa got out of her car and was like, Hey, I was parking there. The woman just looked at her and said "I'm going to a Bowl event" (like that's a good excuse?) and walked off. Well, Lisa was having none of this. After parking about a block away, she went to her apartment, got a jar of Vasoline and some kitty litter and cat poop from her cat's litter box. She smeared the Vasoline over the car windows and under the door handles (picture 1990s car) she put kitty poop and litter. She then waited on the fire escape, where she could see out but couldn't be seen. Lady returns and tries to get into her car. (cont. underneath)
I lived on the fourth floor and I could hear her screaming. Lisa yells out from her vantage point "I hope you enjoyed your Bowl event" and laughs hysterically. Lady can't wipe the Vasoline off her windshield so has to drive off with her head sticking out the window so she could see. Never mess with parking spots.
Load More Replies...Nta...anyone who lives in the city and has to fight for parking would agree... or in my case I pay for parking and still have random people as well as my neighbors park there despite knowing full well it's my parking spot....people.often do whatever they want until they face some kind of consequences it's simple human nature ... And yeah you're right somebody did lie to them and tell them that they couldn't park there but all of the no parking signs should have been a dead giveaway that that guy was lying to them I'm willing to bet 90% of them saw that no parking sign and we're like oh well f*** it the guy said we could park here and just went on and ignored the sign anyway but y'all want to give them the benefit of the doubt no screw them they were wrong....so absolutely not the a*****e and anyone that says you are the a****** is probably one of them assholes themselves that would ignore the no parking sign
First and foremost I say bravo! Just because some random person that doesn’t own that property said they could park there doesn’t make it right, the sign says no parking there was no sign permitting parking for NYE so the people who parked there were wrong. As for the tickets make the person who told them it was okay to park there pay for the tickets. I’m sure they will think twice before parking where it says no parking. The sprinklers and iced cars (justified) 😂😂. I remember living in Chicago many years ago and I lived in a 3 flat and the parking was horrible. If a sign says NO PARKING it means NO PARKING. I’d definitely change my sign to 25.00 am hr to park and put a camera out there. It’s some SALTY comments they must have been the ticketed iced cars. 😜😂😂
Personally dealing with parking issues I think you did a great thing obviously the person who told them bark their heads had beginnings and read the sign and still provided them with false information if anything the partygoers should go after him to recoup the money for false information the landowner did the right thing and the best thing and actually the funniest thing I've heard...Good job!
NTA!! Ignore signs at your own peril. It doesn't matter what the party told anyone.
I don't think it's right they parked there. But it didn't give him the right to potentially damage personal property of others either (he used warm water, which can break glass when ice cold). Instead of icing them, he should have waited till the tow company was available again. From the story, it appears this happened eventually that same night also. They're aholes for parking there despite the signs, but there's a bit of ahole in him as well.
ZERO AH. They shouldn't have ignored the SIGNS SAYING THEY WOULD BE TOWED. They thought they could take advantage of someone, they angered an evil genius. They're grown. No Sympathy.
Load More Replies...“How were they supposed to know they’d been lied to ?” - How about : there were “No Parking, Violators Will Be Towed”. signs posted. As far as I am aware, one must pass a written examination in order to obtain a driver’s license, thus it would stand to reason that these people were capable of reading and had the ability to understand what they read.
NTA and I don't care if the people that parked there were innocent and just listening to their friend. Anyone dumb enough to park where there are "No Parking" signs on a property not owned by their friend deserves their fate. No sympathy for them at all. Stupid got what stupid deserved. They can all go to that "friend" and seek reimbursement for their tickets and towing expenses.
I think this is something systemic of the people who live in Chicago. Several years ago I took my family for a trip to Chicago. We drove around a neighborhood looking for a parking space (the restaurants in this neighborhood didn't have parking lots) and found one. I had to parallel park so as I was backing into the space a car coming from the opposite direction did a U-turn behind me and was blocking my ability to park. Getting out, the conversation from her was "you're not allowed to park here". Her U-turn blocked the traffic in my direction, forcing cars into her original lane to get around blocking traffic from her original direction. After 10 minutes of arguing, I just gave up and left. From this day forward, I simply hate the people from Chicago - they seem incredibly entitled.
Idk man I think everyone in this story is an as*hole. I mean what kind of idiots listen to their friend and park in front of someone else's home? Specifically when there was a sign saying not to? They knew what they were doing. Can't really blame the guy for icing the cars. Still it could've ended up damaging the cars, and the fines seemed a little excessive. Easier way is to just wait until the towing company wasn't busy. Heck, putting spikes around the cars would've been better. That way no one got out and they had to wait to be towed. As for the neighbor....yikes. Nothing to say about that guy. Should've sued him.
And then everybody clapped. Sure, you damaged people's property and made a massive road hazard and the cops laughed along? Sure you did.
Exactly. I can't believe some of these c**p posts... And everyone is so blindly and stupidly agreeing with each other lmao.
Load More Replies...You're definitely the a$$+-&_! First,I find this story hard to believe, because there is no place in the United States that allows you to damage another person's property intentionally for revenge. Also, icing the street and presumably the parking lot? You would have been legally liable for every single bruised bum let alone any broken bones or worse. So yes, you ARE the a$$&-+( in this narrative
An ice covered car is not damaged. The ice melts eventually and it's fine.

I don't know. Blocking some one in and then being pissed that they drove over the bushes to get out seems odd. Like, what were the alternatives? Hit your car? Call their car a loss? Just leave it there forever?
