I just looked at him, walked around the car, got Mom's walker out of the backseat and then opened her door to help her out. The guy's face went ashen and he sped away. The sad thing is...their aunt was probably criticized before she told their grandparents or was very distraught before doing so. They are all in pain, and there’s no easy way to deal with grief. Edit: it’s not fair to the aunt to be stuck in that position, having to deal with grief and being told that she might cause them more sadness to be there. I don’t know how they can repair their relationship, but I hope they do at some point soon.

My mom passed away this September, we were lucky enough to be able to make a service with the extended family (keeping distances and all). People hadn't seen me in ages and were absolutely shocked to see me as I resemble my mom a lot... and with the masks on it all got accentuated because the resemblance is particularly strong for the eyes section... so i freaked out a lot of people.

Well, I now know of a set of sisters who just got themselves uninvited to their aunt’s eventual funeral—-and cut out of her will, to boot! As twins, no one else in the family is as bonded and closely related as the aunt and the mother were. Their (birth) mother, having carried them in her womb, almost but not quite comes close to that connection. The nieces here have no idea how badly they broke their aunt’s heart by barring her from the funeral of the only other person in the world she shared a womb with—-and even a single cell, if they were identical (aka monozygotic) twins.

Ideally you should have set your feelings aside in order to make other who were coming comfortable. It's what hosts do. However, if your feelings were truly overwhelming in your time of mourning and if you asked nicely and apologetically then AND if your aunt really understood, then it's slightly less rude. You do own your aunt something to make this up to her.
Had an aunt refusing me into her home becasue I looked too much like my mom at that age 🙄 Her daughter begging and begging but no, I had to go... She did apologize several years later (at a family funeral) in recognition that I am nothing like her character-wise and she shouldn’t have done so. I have had sooo much more family drama that that aunt is now the only one that’s somewhat decent enough to other familymembers (my grandma subbornly dragged out her terminal stage for more than 10years extra because she knew her family/kids would fall apart after she died. My grandmother had an identical twin (my great aunt, duh). My gmother had a stroke when I was little, so always she looked older to me. When my great aunt died, I hadn't seen her in awhile. She looked really identical now because she was older. Freaked me out! But I'd never have asked my gmother not to attend the funeral because it would freak me out. Honestly.

As someone with an identical twin sister, this post was absolutely horrifying and heart-breaking to read. Losing your twin would be like losing half of yourself. Identical twins often share extremely strong and powerful bonds that beyond non-twins understanding. There is literally a foundation, that was created by an man who lost his twin at the age of 21, that was made to help other twins who have lost their twin, because the only ones who can fully understand there grief are other twins who have lost their twin.
They did 1,000% the wrong thing, but I would encourage people to call this one out in a more empathetic way. They weren’t thinking about inconvenience; they were grieving, the circumstances made the situation more painful for them and they made a very hurtful choice because of it. And when other family members started calling them out about it, they asked for third-party feedback about whether they were wrong. I hope they work something out with the aunt so that the aunt can come but maybe give these guys some space while she’s there. This is a hard situation and I really can’t get too self righteous about this one.
But honestly... While nobody should weigh losses against each other, the aunt arguably knew the woman longer than her children did. Literally her whole life. Considering that usually, the bond between twins is very strong, I can't even imagine the double-pain that aunt was dealt. I agree though that someone should have rationally and without blame explained to the children what they would be doing to their mothers sister. Placed my order, and then sat in the lobby staring at my phone. A white family comes in. Out of courtesy, I acknowledge them by head nodding like how black dudes greeting in passing. A few seconds goes by and the dad impatiently asks, "So are you going to seat us or what?" Mind you, I'm wearing a full suit with a magnetic name badge that clearly says my name and Ford Motor Company. This is where the story could've ended but I decided to be a d**k. So I got up, grabbed some menus, and sat them. Promptly sat my ass back down. Dad blurts out he's ready to order. When he asks why I'm not writing anything down, I reassured him I memorized everything...only to sit right back in the lobby. Dad is livid. Confronts me.
