When we’re sick, we often brush off our symptoms on things like allergies or the AC. However, when things get real, there's one sign we can’t ignore—our cute pets resting by our side and trying to nurse us back to health. They seem to have a 6th sense when it comes to our well-being and sometimes that intuition can save lives.

Kelly Andrew shared a story of how her hero dog Henry, an 8-year-old Boston terrier, saved her daughter’s life. Both parents knew that their baby had a cold, but the pet could sense that things were getting worse. He "kept breaking into the nursery and waking the baby", which made her feel a bit fed up with the dog. Until her 9-month-old daughter stopped breathing.

The post went viral, touching the hearts of thousands and sparking a conversation about how pets make our lives better. Make sure to read the whole story below and if your four-legged friend has done something heroic as well, share your experience with us in the comments.

In an interview with Good Morning America, Kelly Andrew mentioned that every time she shooed Henry away, he would go back in as soon as her back was turned. Fortunately, this behavior was not usual for their pet, so it captured their attention just in time for them to rush their baby to the hospital: "She wasn't clearing her airway. She started to turn blue and go rigid, and she just really couldn't get air."

At the hospital, doctors were able to clear the baby girl’s airways and made sure that she was well enough to come back home. The couple didn’t spare kind words towards their furry friend and mentioned that he will receive an additional gift this Christmas.

"[We're] definitely spoiling the dog a little bit more," said her husband Jeff. "He was allowed to sleep in bed with me last night, and he's got a steak in his future." Both parents are very proud of the Boston terrier who acted on his intuition: "He's never done anything quite so heroic before," Kelly said.

The post quickly went viral, receiving thousands of likes and retweets with users sharing their own stories. Apparently, there are plenty of pets who did heroic acts in order to assist their humans. Whether it's saving a child from SIDS, helping people cope with depression and mood swings or dealing with seizures, people flooded the thread with tales about their little friends.

Her story went viral and many users started tweeting similar experiences

My elderly cat had cancer and she was 18 and the vet said she wouldn't survive surgery and other treatments so I was too take her home and spoil her and give her pain meds until she was too tired for more and after 6 weeks I woke up and she was on the floor and was paralysed on her back. So I called the vet and said I was coming in. She was given the injection and was placed in my arms and my cat licked my arm and stopped breathing. She always licked my arm to thank me for something, this time I like to believe that she was thanking me for caring and loving her and letting her go peacefully. Miss her so much. Rest in peace Agnes

My dad's 10yr old husky will sniff dads breath everytime before he goes for a run. If he's not happy with dads blood sugar level he won't leave. He made dad go home once lucky he did as he had diabetic fit.

I was in the military in Texas and my cat of 18 years was home in Missouri. I had a vivid dream and my cat appeared and just stared at me. I had the most intense feeling he was saying goodbye. My mother called the next day to say my cat had passed in the night. Cats have souls too. Pretty sure this one will be waiting for me on the other side.

My rotti started to become extremely clingy, I thought she was sick but it turned out after months of bullshit I was FINALLY diagnosed 4th stage cancer & given a 2% survival rate!! 3.5yrs of grueling chemo & radiation my Dr was testing me & told me don't get your hopes up I told you remission is almost impossible...I told him I'm fine don't worry!! When the results came back & I was in remission against EVERY ODD imaginable the Dr said how were you so sure you were okay...I told him my rotti!! I explained how crazy she got before my diagnosis & during my treatment but then 1 day she went back to her old self...I just knew!!!💕🐾🐾

Ty for this. My pretty young father, he's 55, I'm 37, was recently diagnosed wit lung cancer. He's my hero, my bff n my biggest champion. I have always been a Daddy's Girl, so this has been especially difficult for me to cope. Watching him get so skinny n lose all his hair, I hav never seen him w/o at least a mustache, my entire life! His last scan showed no cancer spots but there's still one on his back that was diagnosed stage 4 at the beginning so im not sure if that's shrunk or not bc they have not discussed any surgical options to date. N he is not above keeping something terminal from us to protect us. My parents have been together since they were 14yo! They have the kind of love they write novels n make movies out of. This past year especially has kind of felt like a make the memories while you can kinda thing. So im very torn n have very conflicting emotions. I even wear an old watch of his that doesn't even work, jus so I have him with me. So ty! I needed to hear this!

I almost died from hyperthyroid, and once it was diagnosed I was on the road to recovery. I was very tired all the time, but one day I laid on the couch and slept for almost 30 hrs with 2 cats and 2 dogs covering me the entire time. I was shocked what day it was when I woke up, and more shocked all 4 pets stayed on me. I am convinced I would be dead had they not been my blanket.

The question is, how do our pets know that there might be something wrong with us? Well, dogs are known for their sense of smell and people have taken advantage of this ability for hundreds of years—from hunting, detecting drugs and explosives to tracking down diseases. According to science writer Mia Rozenbaum, "Dogs’ sense of smell is so subtle that they can notice the slightest change in human scent caused by disease."

Dogs are already known for detecting cancer, malaria, Parkinson’s disease, COVID-19 and more. For example, "Canines proved to be able to correctly pick out the scent of children infected with malaria parasites 70 percent of the time, from socks they had worn all night," she wrote.

Don't know why you were downvoted you're not wrong SIDS is an acronym for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome...what she had was apnea or absence of breath which is what SIDS is until the death part.

Apparently, they are able to sniff out signs of illness even before a person gets sick. Rozenbaum said there’s been research where dogs were able to pick up biochemical changes in the body that would lead to a narcoleptic moment. They notified the humans in advance so that they would get to a safe place and avoid getting injured. Also, when it comes to people who have diabetes, dogs can assist with knowing when the blood sugar level is spiking or dropping.

When i was working in a nursing home there was a couple who had a whole room to themselves and were allowed to have their cat with them. The husband died and a new resident was moved in. The cat was not amused. The cat began peeing on the new roommate's belongings and bed. Poor little cat thought he was protecting papa's territory.

Chihuahuas are great companions and seeing how strongly they bond with their owners they make excellent alert dogs. Have to start training them very young and be patient because they are so very stubborn. I'm so in love with this breed and nothing beings a smile to my face like my chis going crazy when I get home because "mommy is home"! Followed by lots of kisses and pets...and of course treats! :)

My cat was raised with a dog, but when her owner died they were adopted separately. But now she has a boyfriend. A 6 pound long haired chihuahua who is also a support dog. He stands on his front paws and walks around her before going in for a snuggle. Cutest thing ever.

Big or Small if they have your heart there is no denying their Connection!

Even though there’s been plenty of research showing that dogs are able to bring different diseases to light, it will take a while for them to be used in the clinics. "Researchers mostly still don't know exactly what chemical compounds dogs detect to alert to the presence of the disease," Rozenbaum explained.

"Knowing more precisely what the dogs are noticing would allow their training to be standardized, but even then the skepticism of the medical community might prevail. Not all doctors would want to rely on a dog to make a diagnosis."

My cat did the same. With me for my months of recovery after several surgeries! Love him to bits!

Dog owners have a lower risk of heart disease and are more resilient to stress because having one running around your house means you have to make some lifestyle changes. When you get a dog, you have to take it for a walk at least twice a day, and there’s no way of avoiding it. Increased physical activity strengthens your body and spending more time outside makes you calmer and generally happier.

Not so unusual - well-fed pet kitties don't really want to harm smaller animals, they just love to bat them around like toys. Plenty of cats are on the record as befriending hamsters, pet mice, pet rats, hedgehogs and other small creatures -- cats are naturally friendly, they just need to be encouraged to be nice to other creatures, and given lots of playtime with kitty toys.

Nothing quite so close here but where I live there's a forest between my house and the one behind us. Years back when I had my first Pomeranian, Tasha, who was quite large for a Pom (19 lbs of almost solid muscle) I let her outside from the back deck around 1am one night. She had quite a big bark for a Pom to begin with but that night she took off towards the fence barking like crazy deeply enough you'd think she was at least three times the size she was. I then saw someone take off into the forest, they had been right up against the back fence where the yard ended and the forest began and we're almost by the gate into the yard. It's likely they were going to try to break in or something, but that Pom scared them off. The only thing that kept me from freaking out was imagining how he'd react if he knew he'd been running from a Pomeranian when the way he took off was more in line with how one would run from a mean junkyard dog or pitbull.

My cat does this. He will Pat my face and meow at me, day or night. I know to check my blood sugar. He will catch it before I do. Also I have Myasthenia Gravis and if I start overdoing so my muscles get weak he will put his little body against my legs to brace me (as if he can hold me up) and meow. I have collapsed and blacked out before and he runs and gets my dad yowling and fussing for dad to follow him. Cat has never had any training but has saved my life more than once.

One day after I got my elderly cat she started jumping on me to get me to lie down. Woke up a while later on the floor. I'd had a seizure. After that every time she started jumping a and pawing me I'd go lie down and each time I'd have a seizure. After she passed away I've lost count of how many times I've woken up on the floor bruised and battered from seizing and falling on the floor. I miss her

My oldest climbed from a chair to a table to the counter and pulled herself up on top of the refrigerator about the same age that she started walking which was 9 months. I kept her on a leash for years because she was fast and had no impulse control. People would snarl at me, "You know she's not a dog," I'd just smile back and say "You're right. She's also alive, so we're good." My second was so slow she'd sit down in the middle of the street if I wasn't actively holding her hand. The two of them together were sheer madness sometimes. But they're in their 30s now and no worse for wear so I guess I did okay.

I was expecting my 2nd child, and in anticipation of reduced mobility, we built a fence around the back yard. My 15-month old son climbed over it the week before I delivered. Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion.

My parent's German shepherd (a she) is very protective of my daughter. I can leave them two and I know that they will be alright. Once my daughter started running away from me, a three year old can be surprisingly fast and not very obedient. My parents live in a forest, so no big deal in general, but this time she started running towards a forest road, on which very often quad drivers would just zoom at unreasonable speeds. The dog just turned on hyper speed and ran in front of my daughter to stop her into running on this road. My kid bumped onto the dog, hugged her and both came back to me. I've seen many times how the pooch is standing between my kid and something potentially risky or stupid. Also we have six cats at home, they also deserve a post here :)

Simple, they climb fences,Gates or squeeze through small openings, my younger brother was escape artist, my parents did everything they could to stop him.🤗 but they only got grey hair.

@TwirlyMcSwirl Nope sorry.. I strongly disagree... I honestly believe your story is just as impressive as the others... I think any story where an animal saves a human life is just extraordinary and just goes to show how insanely smart animals can be and also when it comes to saving lives it's not just limited to domesticated animals, which I think is pretty damn cool... Hope you and your family have a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year...

My parents had a dog when my older bro was an infant. Things the dog did: 1, refused to let my grandfather anywhere near my bro when being loud; 2, jumped through a window (shattering it) because he wasn’t allowed to accompany my bro outside; 3, got hit by a car saving my bro. Mind you, the dog also ran away from my other grandparents’ house a few years before all that, walking about 10 miles to my parents’ new home because he wanted to live with them. He’d never been to the new home.

When my dad was a baby his mom was distracted for a couple seconds while at a park, he started crawling towards the street, a huge Saint Bernard grabbed him by his diaper before he could crawl into traffic and pulled him out of the way! My dad has told this story a dozen times.

When I was a toddler, we lived on a farm that was on a rather busy road. We had a fence with a gate in it that faced the road (the gate was for my brothers to get on the school bus). One day, my mother (who was a housewife—-this was in like 1962 or 1963) took me out on the front porch with her while she was doing something out there (like sweeping up, shelling peas, or shucking corn), and our St Bernard, Heidi, came along. I think the phone rang or something, and since I was playing with the dog she figured it was OK to go inside for a minute, fully intending to keep an eye on me through the front window. Once she was gone, I apparently made a beeline down the front walk to the door in the fence and that busy road. Heidi immediately came running down after me, passed me, and plopped all 150 of her furry pounds down in front of that gate, knowing I wouldn’t be able to get past her. My mother wasn’t far behind, but it was Heidi who got to the gate in time, and saved my life by keeping me away from that road. Loved that dog, and have always loved St Bernards because of her.

Fyi, one can't be allergic to melatonin. It's naturally produced in brain every night, so if you were allergic to it, you'd suffer from the reaction all the time. I don't question that the story happened, but the diagnosis is not precisely correct.

I was getting thunderclap headaches on and off for over a month. Three emergency room visits and a visit to a neurologist without diagnoses. Kept being told it was migraines. My dog would not leave my side. She even followed me to the bathroom, EVERY TIME. If I laid in bed for two days, she only left to go potty, then right back in bed with me. After doing research I found that berry aneurysms can be caused by a rare vascular disease that I have called fibromuscular dysplasia (NOT fibromyalgia!). Told my doc and she ordered an MRI which showed a leaking brain aneurysm. I had brain surgery two days later. My dog knew something was terribly wrong and refused to leave me alone for even a minute. Almost 16 years I had her, and I miss her so much. Best ESA ever.

My cat does rounds every evening - 3 circles around the inside perimeter at bedtime, checking each person/animal/door/window. She likes to sleep cuddled up to one of us, but will only sleep for a short time if no one else is awake so she can do rounds. If someone is awake, she’ll zonk right out. As soon as you go to bed, she’s up and patrolling.

I'm so sorry. I've now had two miscarriages in 6 months, and I know what you're going through. You Are Not Alone. (You may also want to consider how much you like your OBGYN; miscarrying naturally is both dangerous and extremely painful. There are meds available to speed up the process and ensure the uterus is empty. You're going to be paranoid about your next pregnancy- if you want one- and it helps to know what your options are.)
