Human domesticated the dog in such prehistoric times that we sometimes do not distinguish dogs from members of our families, and dogs reciprocate people’s feelings. Consider, for example, the stories of Balto, Hachiko or, say, this incredible wolf-dog named Mazel, who lived for many years in the family whose story we once told you on Bored Panda.
But sometimes dog owners are so imbued with love for their furry friends that they are ready to neglect the established rules for the sake of it. Or are they simply disrespectful to other people, thus being lazy pet owners? But this is exactly what we have to find out with you by understanding this story from the user u/DogGroceryStoreThrow in the AITA Reddit community.

It’s actually quite simple. The original poster (OP) is, in her own words, the proud owner of Peanut, her Yorkshire terrier. They are cute little doggos, so it’s not surprising that people often carry them in their arms – even when the dog doesn’t mind going for a run on its own. But that’s not really what we’re talking about now.
The heroine of our story took Peanut for a walk to the dog park and Petsmart recently, and by coincidence it turned out that there was a grocery store in the same complex. And the author of the post wanted to go there and do some shopping. Literally for ten minutes, no more. But the question remained – what to do with the dog?
This suggests a completely logical decision to leave the dog in the car – especially since something serious is unlikely to happen in ten minutes. But according to the OP’s own words, it was very hot that day, and she was afraid for Peanut’s health. Or, in fact, a visit to the grocery store could have taken more than ten minutes. Who actually knows?
In any case, the OP entered the store with the dog on a leash, despite the notice hanging at the entrance strictly prohibiting this. And, as often happens, she ran into an angry buyer who reasonably pointed out the ban on bringing dogs. The author, according to herself, tried to politely explain why she did this, but the guy snapped that she was just a lazy pet owner, and then stormed off, leaving our heroine completely confused – although she was sincerely sure that she did the right thing.

Well, despite the fact that all over the world there are many retail chains and individual stores that allow the presence of dogs, there is still one immutable rule – no pets in the groceries or food aisles. In the end, no matter how well-mannered and calm your pet is, there is always an issue of possible allergies for other visitors. The only exception may be service animals.
Another confirmation – Wilko’s, a houseware’s chain in the UK, in February 2022 officially allowed pets to be present in all 248 of its locations across the country – with the exception, of course, of food aisles. That post on the company’s Facebook page collected more than 17K likes and many enthusiastic comments – and still there were dissatisfied people. Most of the commenters’ dissatisfaction was related to allergy issues, and this is completely justified.
The original poster’s message received slightly less upvotes on Reddit – approximately 14.1K, however, unlike Wilko’s post, there were practically no positive comments. Some of the commenters, who themselves work at groceries, directly wrote that, firstly, there is no place for pets there, and secondly, the Yorkshire terrier is in no way a service dog, so there can be no exceptions here.
And many people in the comments completely agree with that angry guy who called out the OP. At the same time, commenters write that they also adore dogs, cats and whatnot, but rules are rules. “No pets doesn’t mean ‘no pets unless it’s inconvenient to follow the rules’ or ‘no pets except for a few minutes’,” someone aptly stated. In general, if the author of the post took it online in seek of support, she definitely slipped up. And by the way, have you or someone you knew ever also brought a pet to a store, bypassing the rules, just “for a minute?”

Whilst the way this other person talked was unreasonably aggressive and unprofessionell, the dog still doesn't belong in a food store. It has hair that can fall out, it might be dirty, try to steal food and lick it, and so on. Very unhygienic

I have to admit that I broke the rules one day many years ago. One rainy day I rescued a 5 week old kitten from the side of the road and had nothing to feed the little guy. On my way home, I stopped at the grocery store to get kitten food. I was afraid to leave the kitten in the car where he could crawl into any number of crevices and he was already wrapped up in my sweatshirt so I just took him in with me. Rolled up in my shirt, he was not visible and I ran in, grabbed the food and got out as quickly as possible. I would have understood if I had been called out, but no one could see the kitten. He grew up to be a real sweetheart.
Ahh the "proud owner of a yorkshire terrier.". Honey, we pet owners are all proud of our pets, doesnt make anyone exempt from policies. I hate it when people think that just because their dog is small, it wont do any damage. Dont bring it inside a grocery store, dont put it in the basket or cart, dont expect people to be okay with you blatantly disobeying the clearly displayed rules.
The comments included in the article were spot on. Especially the one explaining the sign doesn't include exceptions like convenience or time frame, which she felt was perfect ok. I still hate that, despite telling her over and over, my sister brings her dogs everywhere and to our house. Our previous dog had huge anxiety when other dogs were in his house. Her solution was to lock him in a room when she is there, because "he's like my own kids" (who, btw we raised after she lost custody several times due to drugs, the 4th time the judge, after a whole year and not one thing on the list being done to get them back, said no more chances). So, effectively she is telling me to ground my kid in a time out for having anxiety. 🙄
Family or not, sister has no right to tell you to put YOUR dog away in a room. Tell her to leave her dogs at home. You pup shouldn't have to suffer. It's his house.

While I appreciate that she didn't leave her dog in a hot car, people like this are one of the reasons those of us with service/assistance dogs end up having so many access issues with stores refusing to let us shop with them. I put hundreds of hours, sweat, tears, and tantrums into teaching my assistance dog how to behave in a public access setting, not to mention bathing and grooming her to make sure she's as clean and shed free as I can make her, just so I can go into a shop without having an episode.
Ye, it takes a lot to train them not only to assist, but how to properly behave in public as a working dog. I had a friend in high school who trained many dogs to be service dogs. Our school also allowed her to bring them to school as part of the training and "out in public tests". This also taught the rest of us how the public should treat them as an employee and not to disturb them when they are working. Something I stress to my kids whenever they ask if they can pet a service dog. Like "nope, unless there's a sign on their jacket that says it's OK, they are busy working an actual job ".

I'm one of those people who think we should incorporate pets more in every day life and society. That being said no-one wants your untrained shedding dog in a grocery store. If a store say no pets then don't bring your pet unless it's a service dog. The only way pets are ever going to be incorporated more is if we have stricter rules when it comes to training and which spaces are pet free. Breaking the rules there already are will only make people want other's pets around less, it's not that hard.

I love dogs. I have two. They stay at home because that's where they belong unless I'm walking them, taking them to the dog park, the vet or to obedience class. They don't belong at the grocery store, Home Depot, the farmers market, or other public spaces.

I'm apparently in the minority because I couldn't care less if someone brings their pet into a store. Covid proved it's US HUMANS who are the filthy, germ-spreading nasties, not pets.
This is one of my most serious "pet" peeves. A service animal is only certified after a rigorous 20-24 month training period. No, random a**hole at Home Depot, your German Shepherd that just took a dump on aisle 12 is NOT a service dog. No, entitled Karen at the grocery store, your Pug - that just lifted it's leg and pissed all over the house plants - is NOT a service animal. And give me a f*cking break about "emotional support animals". ALL pets are emotional support animals. An actual service animal wears a vest & harness. I think it should be mandatory that the owner claiming theirs is a "service animal" should have to show some sort of proof.
They had just come from the dog park and pet store. That dog is absolutely filthy at that point. May not have any visible dirt or mud on it, but it needed a bath. Even when animals have just been cleaned, they have other microbes that can be especially harmful to anyone, and not just because someone might be allergic. But to that regard, you realize that humans can be allergic to even other humans, right? It's rare but it can happen. Being allergic to a dog is much less rare than that. I'm allergic to dogs, but not to the point that I need to care about it. My friend, on the other hand, can get a dog hair on her cheek and her eyes will puff up and she'll start getting watery eyes. Think about others before you do things, and stop being so goddamn lazy.
I grew up with dogs, I love dogs. I simply do NOT understand or get WHY people feel the need to bring their dogs with them everywhere they go in their vehicles? Are they that desperate for companionship? Turn on your radio or Bluetooth! Also, the majority of people do not restrain their pets properly in their vehicles. A quick stop, someone hitting you from any angle can seriously injure or kill an animal where you have no injuries. LEAVE YOUR PET HOME!!
We have a wonderful year old Dachshund Lady. Here in Germany, you can leave you pets at a designated location outside stores. Most of the time, the stores provide a bowl of water, rarely some treats, too. Since my wife is working 100% from home office, little Lilly has some seperation anxiety and the maximum we do is to leave her in her kennel in the car when the weather allows it. Or one stays at home with little Lilly. These rules exist for some reason, mostly hygiene. Even though some humans are less hygiene than our dog, it's the stores rule and if you don't agree, simply go to another store. And if you don't agree to the rule ich because you think it is stupid. Their shop their rules. It sometimes makes me mad how little respect other dog owners have towards society. We had friends at our place who I haven't seen for almost 2 years. Of course I asked them if they are okay with having our dog around. Even though our Dachshund is the most sweetest and would like to hug the whole World with her little paws, it is dogs in general that, surprise surprise, one of my visitors is really afraid of. And phobias don't care of the size of the object, think arachnophobia. And even though the Dachshund girl has never been aggressive or bitten anyone, there is always the possibilty she could. My friends have a two year old and a newborn. The two year old could hurt the dog by accident and the Doxxie bites. So we took extra care and all went well. My friend even said that she sees this as a therapy day for herself. Fast forward two hours later at the beach at a nearby lake. Half of the dogs roamed around freely there. My wife and I both were annoyed by this since we only let our dog run free at designated dog areas at beaches or at dog parks. This is simply a matter of respect and consideration. I hope my english is understandable, I'm not a native speaker. So dog owners, be considerate, be respectful, be cautious please.

Walmart allows pets. Atleast near me & I've always found it weird. But I think you have to have them in the cart? Which I think is even more gross since you know damn well those carts never get cleaned. But yeah, YTA. I get it though. It is inconvenient when you have your dog & need to stop for something. Which is why I'll just leave my car on with my dog inside. AC blasting. As long as it's under 10 minutes. I also have a pitbull so... most ppl aren't dumb enough to try to steal my car with her in there. Plus, I lock the doors & leave one window cracked enough for me to fit my hand into unlock it. She would take off someone's hand if they tried to invade her car. Outside of the car. Sweetest dog ever. But I literally never do this unless it's absolutely necessary. Like I need to pick up my meds or something. I also live 52 minutes from the nearest grocery store. So driving home. Dropping her off & going back isn't always an option & not on super hot days.
Don't most newer cars have a way to leave the engine running with the A/C on, and the doors locked? If your dog is not a seeing eye dog/guidedog or helper dog, other dogs just aren't allowed certain places. A grocery store or restaurant is just too tempting to dogs. I can't blame the guy for being angry. So OP, hope you learned your lesson. You now know you can bring your dog to Petsmart, maybe even sneak him into Walmart, but don't bring him into a grocery store.

There are grocery stores where I live they are per friendly. But usually I don't go to the produce section lmao, if I bring in my dogs, we go straight to where the boxed and can stuff is. But if I bring my dog, it's for training. 9/10 I don't have my dog inside of grocery stores since that's me time to get my s**t on my time. That said, the dude clearly hates animals, since I bet if a service animal walked in, he'd respond the same way. And I've seen it. Personally I don't really care, like at all. I get my s**t and get out. Bottom line

He has been into stores before - ones that ALLOW PETS, and then almost always IN A CARRIER BAG because my dog also has a habit of getting underfoot and I don't want him to become a hazard to other shoppers. Grocery stores do not allow pets for health and sanitation concerns and this dirty dog straight from the park does not belong in the place where strangers buy their uncovered produce AND could run him over with a cart.
Couldn't she just leave the dog under the store, with leash tied to some bike rack, pole or something? I don't know about US, but in my country it's a common practice. Many stores even leave bowls with water (and sometimes snacks, too) near the place where you can tie the dog, so it can drink while waiting for its owner.

I’m always amazed at the audacity of thesee owners. I love my 130 pound Shiloh Shepherd. I’ll take him to the dog park and then to Petsmart, but if I tried to bring him into any other establishment, people would be appalled. He’s well-behaved, doesn’t have accidents, and everyone wants to pet him. BUT, he’s huge and looks like a wolf and doesn’t belong there. What’s the difference between my pet and yours, other than mine is an ESA and legally allowed more places than yours.

And give me a f*cking break about "emotional support animals". ALL pets are emotional support animals. An actual service animal wears a vest & harness. I think it should be mandatory that the owner claiming theirs is a "service animal" should have to show some sort of proof.
They had just come from the dog park and pet store. That dog is absolutely filthy at that point. May not have any visible dirt or mud on it, but it needed a bath. Even when animals have just been cleaned, they have other microbes that can be especially harmful to anyone, and not just because someone might be allergic. But to that regard, you realize that humans can be allergic to even other humans, right? It's rare but it can happen. Being allergic to a dog is much less rare than that. I'm allergic to dogs, but not to the point that I need to care about it. My friend, on the other hand, can get a dog hair on her cheek and her eyes will puff up and she'll start getting watery eyes. Think about others before you do things, and stop being so goddamn lazy.
I grew up with dogs, I love dogs. I simply do NOT understand or get WHY people feel the need to bring their dogs with them everywhere they go in their vehicles? Are they that desperate for companionship? Turn on your radio or Bluetooth! Also, the majority of people do not restrain their pets properly in their vehicles. A quick stop, someone hitting you from any angle can seriously injure or kill an animal where you have no injuries. LEAVE YOUR PET HOME!!
We have a wonderful year old Dachshund Lady. Here in Germany, you can leave you pets at a designated location outside stores. Most of the time, the stores provide a bowl of water, rarely some treats, too. Since my wife is working 100% from home office, little Lilly has some seperation anxiety and the maximum we do is to leave her in her kennel in the car when the weather allows it. Or one stays at home with little Lilly. These rules exist for some reason, mostly hygiene. Even though some humans are less hygiene than our dog, it's the stores rule and if you don't agree, simply go to another store. And if you don't agree to the rule ich because you think it is stupid. Their shop their rules. It sometimes makes me mad how little respect other dog owners have towards society. We had friends at our place who I haven't seen for almost 2 years. Of course I asked them if they are okay with having our dog around. Even though our Dachshund is the most sweetest and would like to hug the whole World with her little paws, it is dogs in general that, surprise surprise, one of my visitors is really afraid of. And phobias don't care of the size of the object, think arachnophobia. And even though the Dachshund girl has never been aggressive or bitten anyone, there is always the possibilty she could. My friends have a two year old and a newborn. The two year old could hurt the dog by accident and the Doxxie bites. So we took extra care and all went well. My friend even said that she sees this as a therapy day for herself. Fast forward two hours later at the beach at a nearby lake. Half of the dogs roamed around freely there. My wife and I both were annoyed by this since we only let our dog run free at designated dog areas at beaches or at dog parks. This is simply a matter of respect and consideration. I hope my english is understandable, I'm not a native speaker. So dog owners, be considerate, be respectful, be cautious please.
Were I live it is illegal to bring your pet into any place that serves food. Except for certified service dogs. You are nothing but an entitled bi tch.
Walmart allows pets. Atleast near me & I've always found it weird. But I think you have to have them in the cart? Which I think is even more gross since you know damn well those carts never get cleaned. But yeah, YTA. I get it though. It is inconvenient when you have your dog & need to stop for something. Which is why I'll just leave my car on with my dog inside. AC blasting. As long as it's under 10 minutes. I also have a pitbull so... most ppl aren't dumb enough to try to steal my car with her in there. Plus, I lock the doors & leave one window cracked enough for me to fit my hand into unlock it. She would take off someone's hand if they tried to invade her car. Outside of the car. Sweetest dog ever. But I literally never do this unless it's absolutely necessary. Like I need to pick up my meds or something. I also live 52 minutes from the nearest grocery store. So driving home. Dropping her off & going back isn't always an option & not on super hot days.
Don't most newer cars have a way to leave the engine running with the A/C on, and the doors locked? If your dog is not a seeing eye dog/guidedog or helper dog, other dogs just aren't allowed certain places. A grocery store or restaurant is just too tempting to dogs. I can't blame the guy for being angry. So OP, hope you learned your lesson. You now know you can bring your dog to Petsmart, maybe even sneak him into Walmart, but don't bring him into a grocery store.

There are grocery stores where I live they are per friendly. But usually I don't go to the produce section lmao, if I bring in my dogs, we go straight to where the boxed and can stuff is. But if I bring my dog, it's for training. 9/10 I don't have my dog inside of grocery stores since that's me time to get my s**t on my time. That said, the dude clearly hates animals, since I bet if a service animal walked in, he'd respond the same way. And I've seen it. Personally I don't really care, like at all. I get my s**t and get out. Bottom line
I also have a very small dog. He has been into stores before - ones that ALLOW PETS, and then almost always IN A CARRIER BAG because my dog also has a habit of getting underfoot and I don't want him to become a hazard to other shoppers. Grocery stores do not allow pets for health and sanitation concerns and this dirty dog straight from the park does not belong in the place where strangers buy their uncovered produce AND could run him over with a cart.
Couldn't she just leave the dog under the store, with leash tied to some bike rack, pole or something? I don't know about US, but in my country it's a common practice. Many stores even leave bowls with water (and sometimes snacks, too) near the place where you can tie the dog, so it can drink while waiting for its owner.
That probably would never happen in the US. Dogs get stolen all the time.

I’ll take him to the dog park and then to Petsmart, but if I tried to bring him into any other establishment, people would be appalled. He’s well-behaved, doesn’t have accidents, and everyone wants to pet him. BUT, he’s huge and looks like a wolf and doesn’t belong there. What’s the difference between my pet and yours, other than mine is an ESA and legally allowed more places than yours.
I was going to upvote you until you said your dog is an ESA. What kind of training has your dog had? As far as I know, all one needs to make their dog an ESA is to buy them a vest that says that.

Where I live you can bring a dog in the grocery store. I’ve only seen someone told dogs aren’t allowed once. Ppl have little dogs in purses and even big dogs on leashes.
Sorry, but I take my dog in the store when I need to. I don't really see a problem with it. Yes, people are allergic. But they aren't hanging out with my dog. We aren't around anyone longer than a few seconds. Yes, they have hair that can fall off of them. So do humans. And I'll tell you what....my dog is cleaner than most of the people in the store. Most stores where I live let you bring your dog in without saying a word. Only one store has a problem with it and so I don't take her in that store.

If I need to stop at the grocery store with my dogs in the car I lock them in with the AC on. It's literally that easy.

They have work to do, free pet sitting is not it, especially for a stagnate who you have no way of knowing if/when they'll bother to show again, the liability of anything happens to that dog or employee would be a clusterfuck, and encouraging people who have already shown 0 consideration for other people should not be encouraged to go find someone else to dump the dog on.
