There are so many dog breeds, it's incredibly easy to mistake one pooch for another. Luckily, St. Louis-based artist Grace Gogarty (a.k.a. Little Tunny) has created a comprehensive comic series that will help you identify most of the dog types.
"I've been drawing comics since I was a kid," Grace told Bored Panda. "I absolutely love animals, so that's usually my focus! I worked as a supervisor at a doggy daycare for years and got to meet lots of dogs. The cartoon dogs featured in this guide are the breeds I met the most of."
The artist has divided the series into three parts - big, medium, and small dog breeds, so no k9s are left behind. Great Danes? Check. Border Collies, Yorkshire Terriers? Yep. Pugs, Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherds? Yup. "Sadly, I haven't met every dog in the word yet so that I couldn't write about them all," Grace said. "Although I stereotype them, all dogs are wonderful individuals, so I couldn't possibly pick a favorite breed!"
Among the animals Gogarty owns, there's one pooch as well. "His Name is Huey, and he is an enigma. We have no idea what kind of breeds he's comprised of!" Scroll down to meet the dog memes, and remember - even if some traits sound better than others, every dog deserves a to be a pet. Even if it pees all over your new rug.

I always feel sorry for huskies who are adopted by lazy people. They should get a lazy dog or a goldfish.
Labs are great! They are smart, and loyal,....if you can keep them at home. They're Big-Time roamers. Unfortunately, they don't do all that well in the house. My black Lab, 'Captain Black' had a lethal tail, which was always sweeping back and forth. Unfortunately, he could clear a coffee table in a matter of just a few seconds. The Captain was the main reason why I happily switched from red wine to white wine. Oh, and the Captain sure could fart up a storm too. :D
2 Dobermans used to bark furiously at me every morning as I walked to school bus. One morning I spoke to them. Then on, our routine was they would wait for me eagerly every morning, and I would stop and talk to them. They were happy to see me.
Nonono german Shepards are just floofy boofs, and squishy boopers
Totally not true for the German Shepherd my family and I had. We had a full blooded German Shepherd named Maya for 10 wonderful years. She passed away last May due to cancer. She never barked unless someone knocked on the door or she spotted deer in the backyard. She was so well behaved yet fun all at the same time. I miss her so much every single day. She was part of our family and not just a pet. She was loyal to her very core. Now what is accurate for most German Shepherds is that they shed ALL YEAR LONG. The shedding never ends.
The comment with the drawing is so wrong that it's unbelievable -- they are super intelligent and if they do not listen to you, it's because they consider themselve higher than you in their hierarchy ! HaHAHA -They wil only bark is they are neglected and totally bored because you are not clever enough to entertain them, otherwise they just bark to protect you. They are so full of love to everyonde who gives them love. In my lifetime up to now I had six of them.
So they don't only bark if neglected then? You just conflicted your own opinion... 😉
Load More Replies...I had a dog who was half shepherd, she never barked, except twice, once when my mom let her out and forgot to let her back in and she waited outside the door for half an hour before going Woo (not woof, it wasn’t even a full woof) and the other time was the same thing but when I forgot!
Upvoted purely for the mental image of the dog going "Woo" at the door! My old German Shepherd used to do the exact same Woo if he needed to go out for a Pee!!! 🤣
Load More Replies...I have had two in my lifetime, both so loyal and as a woman you feel safe walking them alone. When I have time for a dog I will without doubt get another one of this breed. Simply the best.
My Thor only barked if he had something important to say. He was a quick study. In three days I had him turning on the lights by hitting the switch with his paw. Very smart guy and he loved my mom. Thor had a really nice bed I got him but true to his breed, he chose to sleep in front of my mom's bedroom door on the floor.
sooo true that loves only one person and still won't listen to them :D although if I have a treat for him, then he is an amazing listener :D
Mine barks only if you come to my house or yard or you are drunk and talk to her on the streets or you bark first😉 Just to warn you😁 but yes, she loves me the most and sometimes I wonder if she has ears🤔 loving, loyal and loves food
Yesssss!! Mine HATES drunk ppl and what is about GSD's that make ppl want to bark at them?! They get triggered . This aside, loyal to the core but he IS a barker .
Load More Replies...Mine passed away 2 years ago (I still mourn her lose). - Extremely loyal - Well behaved (if trained correctly) - Admirable house guardians... they take their "job" seriously. Fedra used to patrol the house and garden every night before sleep. - Kid friendly - Active, they need regular excercise. - Absolutely hates people wearing baseball caps.
My GSD won't bark, and she lives everyone way too much. She keeps trying to jump on strollers and kiss the babies inside!
I know this is all in fun but German Shepherds are not at all as described here. Quite the contrary, in fact.
so true. I have a 7 month old GSD an she only likes me. But she is a good dog and learning NOT to bark at the sky!
GSDs have plenty of quirks, but I'm guessing that whoever did these pics, while really creative, has never had much experience with them nor with their training. There isn't a breed out there that is as trainable, responsive, intuitive or snuggly fur-bombs... I worked hard to keep their respect and their obedience, but they know what's what. More like... treats the trashcan like a heroin addict. Knows it's wrong, redecorates with garbage anyway, then hides in shame when you get home... LOL
Marta is our 7th GSD! They are the best dogs ever😍. Loyal, trustworthy, obedient & very smart😍.
Doesn't apply to my shepherd at all: "Lazy couch potato; Creator of eye-watering gas" does.
My dog hasn't done a smelly fart since being switched to a raw diet...
Load More Replies...Love my German shepherd sheds her weight, wish it was in gold. Wouldn't swap her for the world. Not a one person dog she is a one family dog and doesn't bark unless it is someone she doesn't know coming into her yard. If she knows them they get a jump and a lick but if older or very young only a lick no jump, very proud of our diamond. If she doesn't know them they don't enter. Also bait trained so that has disappointed a few that didn't make it out unscathed.
There is nothing smarter than a well bred German Shepherd. It's the show dog bred GS's that have these problems, not the working bred ones.
Have a wonderful German Shepherd does not bark for no reason and listens and obeys commands. German Shepherds are the best dogs you can have. Loyal, loving and obedient.
The description of this breed is extremely off! Ive had German Sheperds my whole life and they are not barkers! If they are barking it is for a reason, such as someones at the door or when they hear sirens go by. They are a one person dog but very intelligent and they do listen extremely well. They are a working dog and need to feel a sense of purpose, they have a ton of energy. The only downside to the breed is the shedding.
German Sheperds are NOT barkers! I have owned the breed my whole life, they only bark when someone is at the door or when they hear sirens go by. They are a working dog and have a ton of energy and need to feel they have a purpose. They are very easily trained and listen very well. This picture is way off on this breed!
Wonderful dogs! Caitlyn McCracken, they do love more than one person and are quite obedient. My GSD was trained in Spanish and English for commands. If family gave a command she listened, strangers were a different story.
Neurotic..my sleeps in the tub during storms and cause she is a @ person I am also her personal doorman in and out
Only one explanation for this dog.......He's a K-9 dog. Barks almost all night on his nightly rounds and is totally loyal to their Police officer (the dog's a deputy as well) and he still insists on being right......CHECK.
Too smart for their own good if you do not understand how to train them
Yes some are neurotic but always loving to their family.Great guard dogs.
Brilliant, brave and very savvy with humans. Owners need training before getting one.
Barking for 4 hours is right! My neighbor has one and I swear sometimes it’s barking at its own bark.
Yes & no. My ex had a purebred Shepherd (BC) who quickly learned that I was the only one who loved him, fed him on a regular basis and took him for walks. (Literally, "Walkies" as I jingled his leash, and then there he was). When the cops came to finally arrest my abusive SOB - the dog wouldn't let the cops anywhere near me to make a statement. He had chosen WISELY.
People always say Shepherds only love one person, but in my opinion, that’s simply not true. Jasper loves us both. And what’s more, he loves lots of other people too like my mum, the dog sitter, lots of family and friends. He is truly delighted to see all his four and two legged friends. He ignores people on walks, unless he knows them, which is pretty much what you want because a lot of people are intimidated by big dogs.
I love GSD's - had 2. Mine listened to me but no one else. The only downside: SHED!
One person and all children in the household... That's about right. heh. And still won't listen to them...
I have a mixed German Sheperd who is precisely like that. I always thought it was because I named her Katya Zamolodchikova... 28312747_2...9b6fd6.jpg
So glad we didn't get a GS. Our friends several houses down has one barks constantly. We got a husky instead. She's quiet. Never barks. 'Talks' occassionally when she's afraid of something or someone. Beautiful loving tolerant girl. 💘
My Sam loves me and my husband and our other 6 dogs, but not so good with other dogs, and shy of our friends until he’s met them a few times. Even then, during parties, guards the back of the house which is unfortunate, since that is where the guest bathroom is.....
Mines a saint! Listens to me, kids of all ages and anyone that is kind to her. Never barks unless there is danger but god she can yodel if you ask her too haha
Had many in my years. Well I sort of agree with the one person but more like one family loyalty. They are beautiful dogs and never had a barker except when a fire engine went by.
What? I have 3 dogs and German Shepherd only one that listens. They are working dogs and need lots of excercise. Doesn’t bark anymore than other dogs?
I had one and she was my all time favorite dog! She was loyal only to me but she wasn't a barker and she was a good girl! She always listen to me. This might be because I started training her at 8 weeks old and kept it up. She loved learning new things!
The Yorkshire terrier will also show its affection by nipping your ankles. They have teeth sharp enough to draw blood at every nip. (Don't tell me that I should break them of that habit, please -- they're not my dogs but a friend's.)
Still miss ours. He was awesome. Never really had to train him and he listened perfectly. Would just walk near you and come when called. Kinda obsessed about bananas and would do anything for 1. (Stole a whole bunch of the table once... Silly dog) He hated water so when it was bath time, I would just get in the shower with him and close the door. He loved getting brushed and groomed though.
Also Food machine, also needs unlimited times of trecking unless it's hot.
The border collie needs to have work to do or it will be neurotic. If you don't have time to spend training your dog, get something less intelligent. Sometimes a border collie will herd your kids to keep them from getting separated from you.
Tsundere lol that actually sums it up pretty well. Mine sometimes wants to be pet hard and long, but mostly she'll lay down somewhere close and love you from a distance - just don't touch her or she'll leave.
"BorkBorkBorkBorkBorkBorkBorkBorkBorkBorkBorkBorkBorkBorkBorkBorkBorkBorkBorkBorkBorkBorkBorkBorkBorkBorkBork"
You're thinking about akitas. Shibas (mostly) like petting. Akitas are like "no way, dude" as they slip just out of your reach. Not fan of strangers.
I've come to know boxers as social dogs that love to play and hug...
Endless barker, always cold, always hungry, lives in its own world.
In my seventy plus years, I have always been a dog lover/owner. Big dogs, medium dogs, and small ones. But when I got my first shih-tzu I've never looked back since. They're very energetic, love kids, easy to hold, and the most expensive part to them is the grooming every 6-7 weeks. They don't eat a lot, and best of all, they don't leave big piles that need cleaning up. Oh, and they look like hairy little children, in need of affection. I love my CharlieK. Period!
Very cute. But you missed Chow Chow, my favorite breed. Probably beacause I also like cats =]
I LOVE my four-legged children! They never demand anything but love and affection, which they return with interest. And they will love you, no matter who, or what, you are. 00-Yep-5a8...9e0ffb.gif
lucky for you! mine demands the food right out of your mouth. no, not that food, that ones gross. the one that's in your mouth right now. no no once you take it out of your mouth it's not the one in your mouth anymore!! can i eat it directly from your mouth? no? why not!!!

Yes! My dad has a Jack Russell Terrier and he's very similar to a rat terrier. He's extremely possessive of Dad to the point where we have to lock him downstairs when the grandkids come over, otherwise he attacks them!
Load More Replies...Very cute so many so spot on. What about Australian Cattle Dogs? Don't they rate?
I have a poodle mix and can confirm that this checks out. Would also add: refuses to be ignored.
Bichon: sprinting in circles around kitchen or napping. no in between.
I have a Boxer and this was pretty accurate. They did forget the snoring, farting and slobbery kisses! 😁
NO miniature pincher??? They are the kings of the toy breed and they show it! They do all the barking, the whining, and prancing in the kingdom! Plus they will either bit you or lick you to death!!
Loved the descriptions, but I learned more about each breed from the comments then the drawings. I loved reading everyone's stories about their dogs, sooooo funny! My family has had a few dogs over the years, different breeds, and some were on this list, and the descriptions fit. More so the descriptions from the comments, but some from the list too.
Furry Kids are the best kind, wish I could have some again but living up on the 4th floor makes it just a bit difficult*sigh*
Buried my last cat 2 yrs. ago and new landlord says no more animals in the building. :( I miss having the companionship even though she was a bit demanding. Actually, not so much demanding as just climbing into my lap and helping herself to whatever I was eating. lol.. I still remember getting up to get a glass of milk from the fridge and coming back to find she had snagged the entire T-bone off my plate and stalked off with it.
Chow-Chow: -Dude... Leave me alone... Let me sleep... -*leash is grabbed* Outside!? WE're gonna go outside!? YESSSSS! *runs around, waking up downstairs neighbors and ripping carpet apart* -A sound! It came from the door! Must push my head against it and huff! -Oh, you wanna rob us? Go right ahead... You want to leave now!? Heh, go ahead and try it, pal. -YOU LEFT ME HERE ALL ALONE! I HATE YOU! I LOVE YOU! I HATE YOU! I LOVE YOU!... I'm tired... -otherwise enchanted cocoa puff
Cocker spaniel. : - Will try to "track and hunt" everything, whether or not it's alive is irrelevant.
Too bad I don't see a Cocker Spaniel there... they've been my love, my companions, my friends.
No terriers? I have a rat terrier, he loves long walks, can find chocolate no matter where it is hidden, loves to play squeaky ball throw and chase but won't bring it back to me
My experience with a rottweiler is "looks like a tough guard dog but most people can out run them..." The one that we were taking care of with our two dogs (one a chow mix and the other a black lab/shepherd mix) could never keep up with the other two dogs nor our neighbor's dogs. He was always left in their dust.
I have a border collie husky mix, hes not like a husky or a border collie at all. Except the running part.
Do Shetland Sheepdog! - herding instinct but no sheep so probably herding shrubs and children - one evolutionary step away from speaking English - happy to be here
Dachsund:. Wind up barker toy. Will stare you down until beady eyes melt your heart for a taste of whatever you're eating. Lives to trip you. Underdog? No. UNDERFOOT. Pee outside? Goodness no. I might get my feet wet. But if yours get wet stepping in my puddle, that's cool. Where's Daddy and when's snuggle time? Clean up my pee and feed me, then you're going to snuggle me. Hit repeat and do it all again tomorrow.
I would like to know what would have been said about Australian Cattle Dogs
missed English Shepard, not that I'm surprised they never get any recondition.
I have an eight week old black Golden Shepherd (Golden Retriever/German Shepherd). Going through a tough time right now with the whole biting thing. Trying to use positive cues but right now my arms are completely cut up by her fangs.
In that context a pet is a pat as in a scratch behind the ears. Forever. Don't stop. Ever lol
Load More Replies...Is it really so common to find all these pure breed dogs in shelters in the US? Here in Brazil you'll pretty much only ever find mutts in shelters - breed dogs are too expensive, only occasionally you'll see someone donate one, regardless of age or conditions - but whenever I see these posts, people will always talk about having a bunch of breed rescue dogs.
Rafaella, approximately 25% of the dogs in shelters are pure breed dogs. Lots of folks adopt dogs not understanding how much time and commitment they require and those pups end up in shelters. I work in rescue and we have SO MANY pure breed dogs it's crazy! There are even rescues all over the country that are breed specific so they can offer the appropriate care for specific breeds - so Labradors, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, Grayhounds, Bulldogs, and tons of others have whole rescue organizations dedicated to rescuing and finding homes for specific breeds. We have lots of mutts too, but there are pure breeds everywhere. Pretty odd, huh?

HAHAHAHAHAHA this has something true, but please #AdoptDontShop, if you´re searching for a special dog breed because of its character you can also find it at the shelters, but all the mutts´re also adorable, plus usually mutts get older than purebred dogs, especially the smaller ones!!!
Dobermann: That's not true ! Who wrote it? I bet that person has never had or saw a Dobermann in his/her life. They are gentle, but only to their family and their friends. Because trust me, you would not want to meet them with its owner in a dark... They were used during WWII by Germans,,, and do you know why? No? Then maybe you should take some history lessons on the Internet. But you can bet they weren't scared of anything. Because of their "role" in WWII people hated them later, they were scared of them, they knew you shouldn't mess with them. These dogs are not for fun, they are not your sleeping buddies. And one more thing: if you see a Dobermann who is scared of himself you know his owner doesn't have what it takes to raise him and you can bet he doesn't treat him well and he is hurting him. _FACT_ I know, I have them my whole life.
I took it that the tv lies about them being scary because they are even afraid of themselves like being afraid of your own shadow. I grew up with Dobies and I too defend their reputation. I never had an aggressive one and in my experience they are women’s dogs gravitating more to the females in the home. I have had five between childhood at home and then on my own and all of them were like that. They can be trained like many other breeds to be protectors making excellent guard dogs but as family pets they are wonderful . Society has chosen different breeds throughout time to demonize and that breed suffers for it. At one time it was the Doberman, another it was Rotties. As of late it’s been pitties.all of which I adore and have owned both Pitties and Dobies without incident. I had close friends with Rotties and never a problem. It’s all in who owns them, how they’re trained, and WHAT they are trained for. like German Shepherds can be viscious as part of K-9 but are great as family dogs
Load More Replies...All people I know who had a dog were oh so happy to not have one anymore. None of my friends got a second dog after the first one passed away and they all enjoyed the newly-gained free time...
Then it was the correct decision not to get another doggie for those people. Caring for a dog (or any animal) appropriately, takes lots of time, money, and love. I cherish my pups and would be very unhappy without one, and I will continue to rescue as long as I'm able. But if a person does not enjoy and/or care for their pup(s) fully, they absolutely should not get another.
