Diogo’s passing comes after his Lamborghini veered off the A-52 in the Spanish province of Zamora. The 28-year-old was traveling with his fellow footballer brother, 26-year-old André Silva, who also lost his life.

The accident happened at around 00:30 local time. According to Spain’s Guardia Civil, the car left the road due to a tire blowout while overtaking another car. The vehicle then caught fire.

“I’m anxious. Diogo only left this week, but I already miss him,” she told local media.

“On the other hand, it’s going to be complicated, because I have two very young nephews and it’s going to be hard to be away from them.”

At the time, the couple had been dating for four years, so she said “it made sense” to follow Diogo and move to Spain with him.

In 2023, Rute accused Premier League officials of “rigging” a match between Diogo’s Liverpool and Tottenham.

Her social media post reportedly resulted in two VAR (Video Assistant Referee) officials being removed from upcoming games.

Diogo was a key part of the Liverpool team that won the Premier League last season. He also played in the UEFA Nations League final against Spain, which Portugal won.

André played as an attacking midfielder for Penafiel, a club in Portugal’s second division, Liga Portugal 2.

Today is my and my husband's 27th anniversary. I don't know what my life would have been like if I lost him so soon after we got married. My heart goes out to his family. This is one of those things that should never happen. 😢

"Rest in piece" is an unfortunate typo. One can only have sympathy for his family - and also for the guy that they have to buy to replace him in the squad, that's a lot of pressure.
